Roy Barnes keeping $5,000 donation from Bishop Eddie Long

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Roy Barnes canceled a fund-raiser with Bishop Eddie Long last week after news broke that the popular DeKalb minister faced several sexual coercion lawsuits filed by male parishoners.

Now comes word from WSB-TV reporter Lori Geary that Barnes plans to hold on to thousands of dollars in campaign contributions the New Birth Missionary Baptist Church pastor has donated.

Geary spoke exclusively with Democratic nominee Roy Barnes about his political relationship with Long that spans two decades. Barnes said he has no plans to return Long’s $5,000 in contributions.

“The allegations are troubling but there’s not been one deposition taken, not one thing. Let’s let the legal process work,” said Barnes.

Last week Barnes canceled a scheduled fundraiser with Long. Barnes told Geary the decision was mutual.

“I haven’t talked to him. I sent messages back and forth. Of course we knew the press would be there and we didn’t want to take away from our fundraiser. In any regard, we just thought it was appropriate. It was jointly reached by staff,” said Barnes.

He should give the money back and I don’t care if you are innocent until proven guilty.

So, he doesn’t want a photo op with the creep, but he’ll gladly cash that check. Innocent or guilty, Barnes should’ve put as much distance between himself and long. Sure glad I wasn’t planning on voting for this jerk anyway…even more glad I didn’t attend that church!

Well I’m sure Barnes has a few young Long Fellows of his own. Innocent – Guilty ??? He has 4 young men claiming this and not all of them from the same little spot of town.

If you are member of Bishop Long’s fine congregation, my campaign could use a love gift to combat Republican aggression in Georgia. Its no secret Republicans don’t want you to vote. I have it on good authority they’ll return African Americans to slavery if given the opportunity. Let me say this: under a Barnes administration, such things will never happen !

Thank you for your generosity asnd prayers,

Brother Roy

If Roy Barnes was a man of integrity, he would return the money!

BULLETHEAD- You sound like Roy Barnes, mounting personal attacks based on falsehoods and really not saying anything that is of substance. Why don’t you and Roy let us know if or when you are capable of an intellectual debate.

There is absolutely no reason why Roy Barnes should return the money to Long. None at all. That church does a lot of good despite whatever else is going on. The mess the pastor is in has nothing to do with Barnes or anyone else that the church has contributed to.

You’d do best to dig and find out where dirty Deal is getting money from.

Better still, if you elect dirty Deal, he will then have his sticky paws in any money that comes to Georgia. Why do you think he got so excited about the Race To To Top for education. Additionally, he is going to pinch off every Georgian’s money to replenish his till.

Ya’ll better recognize!!!

Pretty sure the donation was from Long, not the church. It’s called due diligence, look it up.

I don’t see why Barnes needs to return the money and what does this have to do with anything? The donation was made in June for a July fundraiser. That money was donated regardless of what is going on now plus he is not being charged criminally. So its not like its Drug Money.

Also for Nathan Deal I guess he takes his own campaign money to support his businesses and get out of debt. Won’t all the Republicans just pay it for him than he will not have anymore bad press

Why should he return it? Long hasn’t been convicted of anything and no one has said the money he donated is tainted. This is a non-story…..just like the hyped “Eddie Long’s Connection to Dekalb School.” Sensationalist journalism at its worst.

I do not like Roy Barnes and would never vote for him, but I dislike bad journalism even more.

@Bullethead – maybe, if you use proper grammar, one would be more inclined to listed to what you have to say.
