Nathan Deal’s son-in-law Clinton Wilder had filed for bankruptcy four years before Deal agreed to co-sign for nearly $2.3 million in loans, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution has learned.
Nathan Deal said Friday that he felt obligated to help his daughter and son-in-law when he co-signed for their now bankrupt business in 2005.
Bankruptcy experts said Wilder’s November 2001 bankruptcy made him ineligible to have his debts discharged when he filed again in July 2009. The Wilders did not disclose the previous bankruptcy in the 2009 filing as the law requires.
The Deal campaign acknowledged the previous 2001 bankruptcy of the former congressman’s son-in-law, but spokesman Brian Robinson wouldn’t say when Deal became aware of it.
“Members of Nathan’s family are not running for public office,” Robinson said.”The important thing for voters to know is that Nathan will meet the obligations that are his.”
Clinton Wilder could not be reached for comment.
The 2009 petition, which the Wilders signed under the penalty of perjury, contains the answer “none” to the section requiring them to list bankruptcy filings within the eight years of the current filing.
That could mean problems for Clinton Wilder, said Darryl Scott Laddin, a bankruptcy lawyer with Arnall Golden Gregory.
Laddin said that the office of the U.S. Trustee, which monitors bankruptcy cases, could file to have Clinton Wilder’s bankruptcy protection revoked, leaving him vulnerable to creditors. A revocation of Clinton Wilder’s bankruptcy would not affect Deal’s liability for the $2 million loan because he consigned the note, Laddin said. The trustee could also refer to the case to U.S. Attorney for prosecution if he believed that the misstatement was intentional.
“Any time someone makes a materially false statement, especially one that is material to whether they can receive a discharge, that would be important in a bankruptcy case and be a big deal,” Laddin said.
Paul Rogers, the lawyer appointed to oversee the dissolution of the Wilder debts, said he has already been in contact with the U.S. Trustee’s office. “I would be very surprised if an investigation doesn’t take place,” Rogers said.
On Wednesday, the AJC reported that Deal and his wife, Sandra, were in financial distress. The couple invested $2 million of their own money in 2005 with their daughter and son-in-law in a sporting goods business that went bankrupt in March 2009. Deal’s assets, including his private residence in Gainesville, are not enough to cover the outstanding debt.
In a conference call Friday morning with supporters, Deal said he was trying to help his daughter and son-in-law.
“I believe that one of the responsibilities of parents is to help their children,” he said. “And several years ago our middle daughter and her husband who had both been traveling all across the country on their jobs wanted to be closer to home since they had our youngest of our grandchildren. My wife and I decided we would help them in that venture.”
Deal denied he is insolvent and said he would make good on his obligations.
“Of course, on top of all of this is the implication that this in some way should have something to do with the governor’s race,” he continued. “I quite frankly don’t think that it has. I believe that, if anything, this is an illustration of the fact that you need a governor who understands the pain that Georgians are facing. Certainly, many Georgians are facing the same kind of problems that my family has incurred in this business venture.”

I filed Chaper 7 bankruptcy and received a discharged. If I was running for public office where I would be the distributor of billions of funds, I THINK THE PUBLIC WOULD SAY, “Not so fast Bullethead”.
Nathan Deal is a joke, and not a really funny joke. I take that back: he’s a laugh riot…. hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah LOSERS IN NOVEMBER.

I worked for a few months with Clinton Wilder years ago at Bearing Point. He only got hired initially because Nathan put pressue on on of the partners who lived in Hall County. As peope inside the industry know Bearing Point do mostly federal/local.state business and love crooks like Nathan Deal. Everyone at Bearing Point knew he couldn’t perform on the job and he was let go when the partner moved practices.
Its no surprise he has been banrupted twice as the money lost is really taxpayers anyway in his mind.
The whole Deal clan are a bunch of shysters and charlatans.

Deal and his crooked family have used Georgia banks as their personal slush fund. I wonder how many times in the past Deal has abused his position of 18 years in congress to get banks to write of debt to his family.
Guess we will never know the whole truth as Deal will not release his full tax records and schedules!

I wonder how Nathan Deal’s other children feel about the expensive loan.
Apparently Nathan Deal was risking everything he owned just for one of the daughters, Carrie Deal Wilder.
From my understanding Nathan Deal has other children.
I wonder how they feel about the partiality and favoritism shown to Carrie Deal Wilder. It appears to me the other children are getting very little help financially. They’re essentially out of the loop. And Nathan Deal has stressed how he helps ALL OF HIS CHILDREN? ALL OF HIS CHILDREN? ALL OF HIS CHILDREN? Yeah! Sure! Tell us about that, Mr. Deal.
This crook, Nathan Deal, has to be given the boot. Every day there’s a new negative revelation now. This can’t go on for much longer. It’s a huge distraction for the other Republican candidates, and has the potential to bring the entire Georgia Republican Party down. This is a cancer.
Not booting Deal out of race would speak volumes about the Georgia GOP. They’ve got to own up to this big, big, big problem and take some action. Doing nothing would be a huge mistake. They’ve got to do something and soon.
Nathan Deal should do the honorable thing and step down. He’s got to do it for the party. He shouldn’t be thinking about saving himself but saving his party.

When I read the above sentence, you just know the person is guilty of something.

To think Deal had zero awareness of the son-in-law’s previous BK is laughable. A big reason he was probably asked to co-sign was because the son-in-law had the previous BK. A credit check on all the participants is a very basic step by any lender given a loan of this size. Due to this situation alone, this guy would be an absolute incompetent choice for Governor. I can only imagine how many no-show $250k+ jobs this guy would create for his friends and family, while the real GA population suffers record levels of unemployment…..

Bottom line is that Nathan “big” Deal is a crooked s.o.b., as Harry S Truman would call it.

Either Nathan Deal is a crook or a complete moron or maybe both. Why in the world would a bank make all of these loans for some goofball outdoor store? The banks must have felt pressured to agree to the loans since the Congressman co-signed them.
I am a republican, and it really saddens me that this fool is our candidate. How can he be responsible for the billions of $ the state has if he can’t manage his own finances? And thinking about all of this mess would have to distract him from the business of being a governor.
And, on another note, something is wrong with the “system” if the son-in-law can keep filing for bankrupcy to get out of paying his debts. Clinton Wilder belongs in jail. Whatever happened to debtors colonies?
Absolutely NO Deal!!!

Nathan could not possibly relate to me. I could never have obtained almost 5 million dollars in loan on income of $150,000! Through his deception, he cheated Georgians from having a choice between TWO VIABLE candidates. Karen Handel should run as a write-in.
Now I know why North Face is so expensive...

Many of the creditors supplied goods for the business: outdoor clothing, shoes, firearms, camping gear. Three companies sued the Wilders in Habersham County Superior Court. For instance, The North Face, a manufacturer of outdoor clothing, sought repayment of $43,690 in unpaid bills, along with $2,089 in interest and $4,603 in attorneys’ fees, court records show

Come on people. Get real! He was helping his kid out! Who wouldn’t help their children. And he does have 3 other kids. And I’m sure he would and has helped the others. Maybe they don’t need much help after all one is a judge. Dought he would need help. Deal has done a great job while he has been in office. And will make a great Governor. So why dont everyone back off his family and look at how he has done his JOB in the past. Look at it this way if you were applying for a job would you want them to look at your family or look how well you can do the job.
