PolitiFact Georgia is attaching its Truth-O-Meter to claims by Republicans that Democrat Jim Marshall, who is seeking a return to his 8th congressional district seat, is taking “dirty” money from embattled U.S. Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY).
Rangel faces 13 alleged ethics violations accusing him of using his office for personal gain and is fighting to keep his seat.
Incumbent Marshall, who faces Republican insurance agent Austin Scott in November, also is fighting to keep his seat. AJC political writer Aaron Gould Sheinin recently reported on a Scott campaign poll that showed Marshall leading Scott 44 percent to 39 percent, within the margin of error of 5.7 percentage points.
So, is Marshall taking “dirty” money from Rangel as a recorded telephone message to Middle Georgia voters claimed on Aug. 10? Kind of, according to PolitiFact, which rates the claim by the National Republican Congressional Committee “half-true.” Read more of PolitiFact’s reasoning.
