AP: Sinkfield wins Secretary of State runoff for Dems

ATLANTA (AP) — State Rep. Georganna Sinkfield has defeated state Sen. Gail Buckner to become the Democratic nominee in the race for Georgia secretary of state.

Unofficial returns Tuesday show Sinkfield with 59 percent of the vote after 81 percent of precincts reported.

The two were forced into the runoff when none of the four Democratic candidates earned more than 50 percent of the vote in the July primary.

Sinkfield will face Republican Secretary of State Brian Kemp, who was appointed to the office in January after Karen Handel resigned to focus on her bid for governor.

Well, any chance the Democrats had of winning the Sec. of State’s office just got “sunk.” Sinkfield will be rammed, bammed, and slammed in November.

Sinkfield will not only win the Secretary of State’s office, but she will take it by a landslide!

I voted for Ms. Buckner, but I will vote for Sinkfield now as a loyal Democrat.

I’ve known Georganna for nearly 30 years and my wife has known her even longer. I have always had great respect for her. She can be an excellent secretary of state and a huge improvement over what we have had in recent years.

From her bio “The South Carolina native earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Tennessee State University and attended Emory University School of Law.” I once attended 3 quarters of school while pursuing an MBA. I once went to Graceland, does that make me an Elvis imitator? She is unqualified and only electable by virtue of her skin color. Somebody has to say it.

@ JD in Marietta. Karen Handel doesn’t even have a Bachelors degree yet she was Secretary of State and a leading candidate for Government. Name me just one minority candidate that for any race in Georgia without at least a 4 year degree.

Larry, you make a good point and I admit you’ve got me there. I am opposed to lifelong “civil servants” as I believe they only serve themselves instead of their constituents. Karen Handel does not have the academic credentials that others have such as JD’s from Harvard, she has a good track record of being productive and efficient in her previous positions such as Fulton Co Commissioner where she had to deal with such idiots as Emma Darnell, and she fared pretty well as Sec of State. Mrs. Sinkfield is after all a Democrat which means that a good deal of Georgians who vote for her will either be living off govt assistance or too dumb to realize she is an Obama supportner.

One of the reasons I voted for Ms. Sinkfield is that she was the only Sec. of State candidate to mail me literature or even do a “robo-call.” She wanted my vote; I suspect when Ms. Buckner was ahead she didn’t think she had to do anything for the runoff. There is a lesson to be learned here, candidates; don’t take votes for granted.

I was glad to vote for Sinkfield on a friend’s recommendation.

I later found out that her opponent, Gail, actually voted for the 2004 state Constitutional amendment barring gay civil unions while she was in the General Assembly. So I decided not to dally and voted again this round for Sinkfield, who voted against that amendment while in the Legislature.

I figure if I’m gonna have a rep from a minority party, I’d rather not vote for a person who helped make Dems become that minority party in Ga. By approving that amendment, Gail helped turn out the Republican vote in 2004. Stupid. Figures she’s still slithering about in politics.

You know what, i wasnt concerned about this race at all…neither candidate stood out amongst the crowd. So, instead i went and had breakfast at McDonald’s..

In fact, what do they stand for? How will they make GA a better place to live? How will they bring jobs to GA? These questions have yet to be answered…

Instead of a response – all we hear are crickets singing…

Congratulations Mrs. Sinkfield!! As an outsider looking into GA politics, I can see that some people just aren’t use to having someone of your stature representing them. The good thing is that we are taught that we should love “everyone” and treat everyone equally. With that being said, I know you are the best candidate for this position.

Congratulations Mrs. Sinkfield. I am so very happy for you. Your professionalism, your determination, your qualities, your knowlege and your qualifications are what we need as a candidate for Secretary of State. I will be in your corner the next time we go to the polls. Continue to go forth and represent well as you always do!
