I believe in the validity of confession, redemption and forgiveness. But a politician who holds himself out as the paragon of Christian conservative virtue, seduces a college student intern while his wife is home taking care of the kids, tries to keep his sins secret from the electorate while running for higher office has a long way to go to earn our trust.

He does not deserve a promotion.

As the father of a naive, inexperienced, conservative Christian college girl, if she got an internship with a politician who used her in that manner, I would want to shoot him.

As a man who has been faithful to one wife through thick and thin for nearly three decades, I have little sympathy for hypocritical sleazeballs who behave that way.

As the son of a man who philandered with a staffer but at least had the decency to decline high office because of that past conduct when it was offered to him, I am shocked by Preston Smith’s poor judgment and hubris.

Here’s an ironic line of defense for Preston Smith:

Monogamy unnatural for our sexy species

Preston Smith told AP that the affair with the college girl did not begin until after she stopped working on his payroll. I infer that the affair was not a matter of being just swept away in sudden passion, which might be understandable, but rather was a premeditated, deliberate pattern of intentional infidelity.

“State Sen. Preston Smith told The Associated Press on Thursday the woman left his office in 2003. He says the relationship began in 2004, adding he has never dated anyone employed by his office or his campaign. Legislative records show the woman received her last payment from Smith’s office in December 2003. Finance records also show the woman received payment that year from Smith’s campaign.”

Preston has never hid the fact he made a mistake. Both with the affair and the divorce. Part of Christianity of asking for and receiving forgiveness. Preston has gone on record saying he made a mistake and is remorseful for those mistakes.

@ Whitaker: I’m all for forgiveness. But that doesn’t mean I then have to put the guy in a position of public trust.

I’d prefer that the State of Georgia not have a chief legal officer who lies and cheats.

He does acknowledge that he made a mistake. He has to live with that mistake everyday. He is a good christian man and a father who loves his children. As a christian, you are supposed to be forgiving. He made this mistake several years ago and is trying to move on and put it behind him. I believe he learned his lesson and will not make that same mistake again. He is still, in my opinion, the right man for the job. GA needs someone who is going to fight for us and that is what Preston will do. He isn’t trying to hide anything. He just wants to take a stand for the people of GA.

@ GA Girl:: Fight for you? This isn’t a military position. There is no fighting involved. The Attorney General’s job is to provide quality legal advice to state officials. It requires honesty and sound judgment. Smith doesn’t have those qualities.

I am calling out all voters right now. I have no problems in forgiving people. God knows that nobody is perfect. GA Girl states that Preston made a mistake!! Give me a break. His actions clearly show a lack of character and judgement. We should hold our elected officials to high standards. We do not need a “frat-house” environment. The AG’s office requires “HONESTY AND GOOD JUDGEMENT.” No ifs, ands, or buts. I will go on record that I have serious concerns about those who vote for someone with these continued character and judgement flaws. Look at the constituent comments in his hometown newspaper:

They should have never put him in as a senator. I am looking forward to seeing if the voters will be different than Prestons colleagues in the senate. Will conservative voters hold him accountable or will they elect him and condone his actions/lifestyle? I for one cannot and will not support Preston. I may be the only one, but at least I will hold him accountable. What say u?

Preston Smith hasn’t asked for forgiveness….now that all the sordid details are out, he says he Made a Mistake…..but knowing that he had multiple affairs on his wife starting when she was pregnant with his fourth child, living with her and sleeping with the college student baby sitter, turned campaign worker ??? Still lived at home, but kept sleeping around….then left his family–wife and 4 kids penniless and in the limbo of “separated”===not legally mind you,,,just easier to cheat. He finally divorced his wife in 2009 and that is when all this came out from HIS deposition…His own words. Not Sam Olens, not other detracters …..HIS WORDS…. He is a loser and now FINALLY, the TRUTH is out!!

Still amazing at the comments from “GA GIRL” We water down Prestons actions to that of a “mistake.” Curious as to what u said when President Clinton made “mistakes” with jennifer flowers, monica and the cigar? If you were married and your hubby had 2 “mistakes” on you, spends the retirement so you do not get it in divorce proceedings, and leaves you and 4 children to live on $500 a month while he thinks about his decisions in the arms of his lover, I am curious what you would say or do? I am about 99% sure you would not be there supporting his campaign for AG. If you are, might I suggest psychological counseling. Bottom line: Preston Smith is a hypocrite, philanderer, and a adulterer who needs to be held accountable for his actions. He broke the covenant of marriage, destroyed the foundation of marriage (TRUST), made a mockery of the state office, and has not repented or asked for forgiveness. His response of “like many in GA…” NO. Our elected officials are held to a higher standard. Also curious as to what you would say if these were the actions of Sam olens. Just going out on a limb, but I believe you would be calling for his head. Double standard. Preston Smith has a simple motto: Do as I say, not as I do.
What say u GA Girl?

I have no further comments since you are apparently the expert in this. I still stand behind Preston. You can believe everything you read if you want. Things are not always as they seem. You can’t possible know everything about someone by reading a court transcript and news headlines. I never claimed he was perfect or that he should not be held accountable. I am not defending his affair by no means. That simply should not have happened. But everyone is entitled to their opinions as you certainly are and so am I. Either way, Preston still has my vote. I still believe in him.

GA Girl,
Your vote and support for preston gives me a pretty good idea of where you rank morals in a candidate. Just be a “good person” yet be a philanderer, liar, and a hypocrite and the candidate will get your vote. U could shorten your response by just saying “morals do not matter.”

They are all cheaters..Most just do not get caught. These interns are young and get so caught up with the political status that they walk around with their short skirts and give in to the flirting. It’s embarrassing and I feel sorry for these girls at their lack of self respect. I also despise the legislators like Preston who think they are above getting caught. I believe if you continue to lie and cheat, it will eventually catch up to you. Proof is in this article and what happened with Richardson. I say good riddance to them all. Preston, you do not have a chance for AG. You have ruined your career by your lack of morals and I am SO glad I will not be seeing you in the Capitol. Your drunken behavior with those interns on the last night of legislative session ‘08 is inexcusable and then you had nerve to get angry when reporters caught wind and made some calls to Senators. You are lucky they said they didn’t have any comment. I know for a fact you provided alcohol to those girls and I clearly saw you flirting with them. Sadly they chose to kick those girls out of the chamber, but overlooked your drunken behavior because they needed your votes. Sadly a staffer had to stand at your desk and press those buttons for you because you were not capable of doing it. I lost a lot of respect for leadership that night for not reprimanding your behavior. It starts at the top and I pray that Handel gets elected at Gov and gets rid of some of the “good ole boys”. Leadership is a disgrace. So Richardson is gone, now Preston…What will happen with Casey and Balfour when news hits about their behavior?!!!! Good riddance..
