Ted Roof hired as Tech coordinator

Ted Roof, once a Georgia Tech star linebacker and later an accomplished assistant, is returning to Tech once more.

Roof has been hired as the Yellow Jackets’ new defensive coordinator as the full-time replacement for Al Groh, fired in October. Roof leaves Penn State, where he had coached one season, for his alma mater.

In his only season at Penn State, the Nittany Lions ranked second in the Big Ten in scoring defense (19.1 points per game), fourth in total defense (356.3 yards per game) and first in sacks (34).

“I’ve known Ted for a long time and I’m excited that he has decided to come back to Georgia Tech,” coach Paul Johnson said in a statement.  “He’s one of the most respected football coaches in the nation.”

Roof served as linebackers coach for former Tech coach George O’Leary for one season (1998) and then defensive coordinator for three. He left to become defensive coordinator at Duke in 2002 with the changeover in head coaches. During that time at Tech, he worked with Bill O’Brien, now Penn State’s head coach.

He later became Duke’s head coach 2004-07, getting fired after a 1-11 season. He was coordinator at Minnesota for one season, then coordinated the defense at Auburn 2009-11, helping the Tigers to the 2010 national championship. He left Auburn to become coordinator at Central Florida for O’Leary, but left shortly after for Penn State.

Roof used a 4-3 defense at Penn State. He said last August that “the main core is I want us to be aggressive. I want us to play fast. I want us to be physical.”

In 2009, while at Auburn, he described his philosophy as using 4-3 some of the time.

We’re pretty multiple in what we do,” he said. “You have to have a system that’s adaptable to different types of people — especially if you’re coming into a new situation. It’s one thing if you’ve been at a place several years and you recruit to a specific system. It’s another thing when you come in, you’re new and you have a system that’s broad enough and diverse enough to handle whatever personnel. This league, you don’t trick people. You have to out-hit people. There won’t be much tricking going on.”

With the departure of interim coordinator/secondary coach Charles Kelly for Florida State, Johnson still has one more opening on his staff to fill.

Great Great Hire!!! He is a former player, a former coach, a former DC, is from Georgia, has head coaching experience and most importantly his defenses never ever SUCKED which is what GT’s has been for 4 yrs straight (save the last 1 and 1/2 games. Love it!!

Obviously better then Groh but not a huge improvement. Johnson and the budget limits options, so probably about as good as could be expected for Tech.

Keep in mind a few things:
1. He went to Tech
2. He played at Tech
3. He formerly coached at Tech
4. He is from Lawrenceville

I don’t see Roof jumping ship in a year or two. The more I consider it the more I like the hire. He’s done a great job both coaching and recruiting at Auburn and PSU, he knows the landscape at Tech, and he knows the state when it comes to bringing in new players.

in both his stints at gt and auburn he worked for head coaches (oleary and chitsnick) that were former dc’s. rumolr has it that they both micromanaged ted while he was dc at both those places. so imo the results he got there are not representative of what he can do.

the pros as i see them…

-he has fire in his belly similar to the hc a fla. muschamp
-he has a lot of experience and is still young
-cpj likes him
- he has the rep for being a stellar recruiter
- he had good success at penn state.
- he had good success at minnesota.
- he was part of a team that won a nc while at auburn. a team that held oregon’s o to just over 100 yards.
- he is a tech man through an through
- if he is successful at gt we have less to worry about his using gt as a stepping stone.

I like it! Great hire for Tech! We now have an experienced defensive coach; a top of the line recruiter; and one of Georgia Tech’s great former football players. Coach Johnson deserves great credit for this hire. Tech people by nature are truly stubborn and I am convinced that 40 percent of the “Hive” followers never like anything and that is why they do not show up at games the way they should with their support(sounds a bit like our country) Get with the program now people. 2013 is the year for the Jackets and Ted Roof will be a big part of it. Crank up the Ramblin’ Wreck! Defensive players (offensive players too) pay attention to Coach Roof. He is a person you will want to be like in the years to come.

I have to admit I had not thought about Roof but the more I think about it the better I like it. He is a Tech man and lord knows his work ethic can’t be questioned! His D at Penn State was solid and he authored a pretty fair D at Auburn when he was there. Welcome back to the Flats Coach!

For all the reasons given, Roof is an outstanding hire for CPJ, e.g., see the PSU performance this year under horrible circumstances. He’s relatively young, recruits D talent well, and unlike Groh, has the correct philosophy that you have to out-hit people, not out-trick them.

I would suggest that looking at the real numbers shows the underlying reason that Coach Roof was hired.

tl/dr; He turns around defenses with repeated success.

In 1998 before he became DC at GT, our defense was ranked 82nd. During his three years on the flats, the defense was ranked 100, 22, and 37. That seems like solid improvement for a first time DC. Prior to Roof’s arrival at Duke, their defense was ranked 116. His first squad ranked 83 and his second ranked 76, That was enough to earn him a gig as the HC (yes, it didn’t go well but he was only paid about $300k a year – Cutcliffe got $1.6M to succeed him and it’s taken years to make Duke competitive, but I digress…).

Again, prior to his arrival at Minnesota, the defense was ranked 110. His first year as DC they jumped to 61. In 2009, the Auburn defense was ranked 76. In Roof’s first season as DC, Auburn won a national championship and the defense improved to 53. Only at PSU did the defensive unit rank drop (from 5 to 16) but this year there were a number of issues that PSU dealt with.

For those who say he shifts jobs constantly – not really. In the 15 years since he first coached at GT, he spent 4 years on the flats and 6 years to Duke. He only left GT when Gailey was hired (don’t you wish Braine had felt the same about Chan-the-Man?).

I suspect that CPJ saw a chance to hire an experienced coach who can take our current batch of talented players and make them special. With so much positive going for the offense, it could be a special year.

From what I remember about Ted Roof as a player, he was pretty dang good. I think his playing style has transferred over to his coaching philosophy too. Tech will have a good, hard hitting effective defense under CTR. Y’all remember, if we can be top 30 or better statistically on defense, GT will be dang hard to beat. All of Ted’s previous years stats show that kind of defense. Welcome home to CTR & family. GOOOOO JACKETS THWGeorgie And good luck to Coach Kelly too!

Thanks for the background MiltonFan. I had kind of lost track of Roof after he was fired by Duke. When Roof was the LBC, we set a record with 9 consecutive games with a defensive touchdown. We had a decent D back in those days. All we need now is decent.

I like the hire. Roof is a Tech guy. He left AU to coach with one of his friends and former colleague at Tech…a colleague who was focused solely on offense. He was at Duke for several years before ultimately not being able to turn the program around.

I put the hire as a 7/10. He’s not Kirby Smart and he’s probably not the recruiter Lance is, but his teams generally play pretty solid defense. My only concern is whether or not he’s learned to play the run and the pass. My recollection from his DC days at Tech is that he was a stop the run guy, but we would often get torched. The biggest question now is whether or not our players can convert to the 4-3. I think we’ll be able to, and probably well. We’ve got 270-300lb guys in all four DL spots, Watts and Attouchu can cover out of the backfield, and Hunt Days in the middle will be a prototypical guy. Looking forward to Tech football next year.

Ken, any word on how hiring CTR will affect the rest of the defensive staff? I’m guessing with CPJ’s penchant for offense and CTR having been a head coach in the past, I have to assume that he will have total control over the defense. Knowing that, would he want Groh’s staff?

Now that Giff is available has a good point. A lot of us really want to know how and if CPJ plans on directly addressing recruiting. I have to think Roof still has contacts as he’s only been out of the are a little while. But, will he be allowed the finances to build a staff that will be better than the previous one?

what a good hire. All the read – keep good position now break on the ball defense of the last 4 years is gone. It made no sense with a TO to rest the other teams defense while we bend but dont break – till we go to the break break defense in the third quarter. We should put pressure on the QB by sending 5 minimum each down. The offense need possessions! Now we will have a defense to match our offense – sure we will lose to good passing teams and teams with good defense – but we will also have a chance at some big upsets. With and agressive defense we can recurit some 4-5 star kids that want to show thier talents – what a mistake the GRO_OLD defense was by CPJ! This could be the start of a major turn around too = with some PISTOL and even some BAYLOR OFFENSE the TO could be fun on the FLATS. Wish i lived near by! GO jackets

Giff Smith may be the most popular coach of the last decade at Tech. He was an effective recruiter and has a solid resume, but I don’t know if Tech has the money or position to lure him back now that they’ve hired Roof. And given his proximity to CPJ through Ga. I would think that Coach Roof is a different and hopefully much better coach than his last stint as DC at Tech. I too remember Roof as a player and one of Tech’s all-time greats, but the defenses under Roof and O’Leary were not very good. This is a safe hire for Coach Johnson as Ted Roof is a “big” name to Tech fans and comes from two bigger football schools, Penn State and Auburn. I know he is leaving Penn State on a fairly high note, but Auburn fans all but ran him off just a year after their national title.

I know the 3-4 experiment has not gone well at Tech, but switching back to a 4-3 potentially means two or three years of additional transition and defensive confusion. Tech and Coach Johnson need the defense to really step up next year, no excuses.

PJ gets mad when people way he doesn’t care about defense and then he hires a washed up old man run out of Virginia and then replaces him with a guy who coached some of the worst defenses in Tech history. Roof was horrible at Auburn and got run out of town. He has been job hopping around since then trying to move before people see how bad his coaching is once he gets his own players in. With a tougher schedule, new QB, and retread Roof leading the D, we are looking at 3-9 next year and no money to buy out PJ.

Let’s face it. This hire could go either way. As c w points out, we will once again undergo a fundamental restructuring of our personnel on D and, in the meantime, must force fit Groh’s 3-4 players to Roof’s schemes. As for his years under O’Leary, it was widely known at the time that Roof’s hands (as a first-time DC) were tied by O’Leary, and he was forced to play a bend-but-don’t break style that wasn’t very successful. In recent years he has shown himself to be a seasoned coach with good results. But an immediate turnaround with Tech’s D may be a tall order.

Funny how those who are ripping on Roof for the defense in ‘99 – his first year as a DC at a FBS (then I-A) school – don’t give him any credit for the Godsey years in ‘00-’01, when the defense stepped up and made up for the fact that the offense wasn’t as prolific as it had been the past couple of years with Hamilton. The defense was better those 2 years than it was in ‘98. He also improved the defense at Duke and Minnesota. Honestly, Auburn is the only place he’s been a DC and not been pretty successful.

It’s not a sexy hire, but I don’t think it’s the train wreck some people are making out.

Well, you can look at that a couple ways. You can say he didn’t get more of his players drafted or higher draft picks, or you can look at it as he did pretty well without great players. To really put this in context, I think you’d have to look at how his players were viewed when they were recruited. That would help determine if he coached his guys up, down, or if the draft results were pretty much entirely based on the players’ abilities and his coaching didn’t impact them much at all.

For everyone who has doubts about Ted’s abilities as a Defensive Coordinator, look back to what he was able to get his defense to accomplish against Oregon’s daunting offense in the National Championship game in 2010. I’m a better man than very few, Paul. But I agree, I’m not thrilled. I’ll never understand why Johnson allowed a complex defense for almost five years (he had the same criticism of Wommack’s defense) when he runs such a simple but effective offense. Use the same principles on defense and be successful.

I keep coming back to the idea that we needn’t have a dominant defense. Just a competent one would have had us at 10 wins each of the past two seasons.

Very good player, fair defensive coach at Tech, lucky opportunity in year one at Auburn, terrible in year two, actually good to very good at PSU this year all things considered. Not my first choice, more so becuase I question his ability to recruit and that is what we need more than anything, but he’ll probably be an improvement. Duke doensn’t count even though Spurrier won at Duke. With what he has returning, it will be a better defense under Roof’s leadership. Here’s hoping that NC at Auburn left Mr. Roof wanting another one more than anything else in life, i.e. Nick Saban. Time to go to work.

Huge mistake. Paul Johnson needs to go. He cannot even evaluate an effective or innefective assistant. Ted Roof was here once already and was not effective. He is very poor in pass defense. Paul Johnson has made a huge mistake in thinking the recruits at GT are equivalent to the last place Roof coached. Tech should never, never, never, never, never, etal get a coach from a school who recruits the high star athletes. Ted Roof will be no better than Groh, nor the coach who was here before Groh. The good thing about Ted Roof is that he’s more likely to get more out of what Tech has. You can have great individual talent on D (see Bulldogs, Georgia), but if you can’t get the players to play cohesively on a consistent basis (see Bulldogs, Georgia), then you will never have a defense good enough to win titles. Tech has had talent on the defensive side of the ball, but Al Groh, for whatever reason, could not do the job. Roof can’t help but do better.

CTR´s leadership in recent assignments shows great promise. Perhaps a work-in-progress (aren´t we all)? Helping the Nittany Lions recover from their train-wreck says much about his character (on and off the field). We shall see.

I don’t think any coordinator would have success with our current players.

NC State has four freshman as well. I’m tired of excuses.
When this guy was hired Dayton fans said good riddance and that his offenses stunk and I’ve seen nothing to refute that. I didn’t like the hire then, it seemed like well this is what we can afford hire whether than the best for the job hire just like this TR hire. But the difference is that with coach TR we already have seen the results multiple times .. I’m not a negative Nelly but the hire stinks to high heaven.

Dawg trolls.
I know u are unhappy that Bama gets 3 out of 4 NCs while u weren’t even born for Herchel’s days of fame.
Doesn’t seem fair they get three to your zero.
And now u have a basketball team that stinks with an empty Stegesaurus.
So I understand why u have to put down Tech but that won’t make your programs as good as Bama in football or Florida and Kentucky in basketball.
They have better coaches and u r unlikely to ever be better them.

NC State was also the 20th ranked team in the country, and I doubt that all four of their freshmen were on the court at one time, although I wasn’t able to see the complete game to know for sure. For Tech to have the lead with 4 minutes left, even if we did blow it in the end, speaks pretty damn highly of Gregory’s coaching in my book.

Somebody asked earlier why there was no live blog from the game tonight. It should be obvious that the AJC is not going to spend any money to send somebody to all the away games to cover Tech. And Ken DOES have a life to live and a family to spend time with. I don’t expect him to be online during every game trying to keep us entertained. When ANY blog is open, it becomes by default a live blog, even if there is not an AJC rep there to add his thoughts.

Sorry GT fans, I see most of you excited for this hire but as the DC at Auburn, our defense was the worst in our history. We lost the fundamentals of tackling on defense. Lots of arm tackles. Defense wasn’t aggressive at all. His Def at Minnesota was dead last in the conf. PSU had a good defense before Roof got there so thankfully he didn’t have more time to tear down their defense too. Well, I guess that’s possible, but TR is a real dumbazz if he hasn’t picked up anything about coaching D since he was last at Tech. Let’s use the most recent body of work, at Penn State, as the best indicator lof his coaching ability and wish him the best at GT. And if he is so terrible, why do head coaches who have worked with him in the past keep hiring him to coach for them? Blind loyalty? I doubt that. In regards to recruiting ….. we all know how the kids these days love by “LOVED” and putting out their top 10, 5 & 3 lists. And I’m sure they all love the “BLING”. Johnson’s recruiting is fine. There is no coach who could do substantially better at GT. Sorry, it just isn’t ever going to happen. Ted Roof was a great linebacker and forever will be remembered as captain of the “Black Watch” defense. As a coach, not so much. Having watched Ted’s defenses, he’s earned the name “Mr Prevent Defense” for his ability to always allowing his teams to snatch defeat from victory.

Don’t care about the “stats” (too many factors go into a summarized number and you can’t quote stats from the O’Brien or O’Leary years . . . . we all know those guys were the defensive leaders in the end).

What I see is Ted coming home (why else move DOWN from Penn State after a successful first year), and waiting for the axe to fall on CPJ (which is likely at the end of next season) . . . Yes, a step up from Al “Professor” Groh, but this defense will still get racked (in large part by spending 2/3 of the game on the field and 1/3 by Ted’s ability to go into a shell late in games).

Hope I’m wrong . . . afraid I’m not.

Gus in Marietta

I think the world of Ted Roof as a person and think he was one of the toughest football players I have ever seen. No one got more out his gifts than Ted did on the field. But as a coach, he has been a disaster. His defenses were terrible at Tech. I remember sitting behind his wife in the stands, fans were booing and she was upset. Despite his ties to the school, eventually, it became unbearable and he left. His coaching at Dook and Awburn was no better. Yeah, he had a good year in Happy Valley this year, but that goes against the grain of his body of work.

This pretty much assures that the new AD will fire CPJ at the end of the 2013 season unless we do REALLY well. CPJ better dust off his resume….

This hire is really nothing to be excited about. Yes Penn St. was good this year on D, but that has been the case for a few years now. Roof inherited a very good unit. The story was much different at Auburn, and I can tell you Auburn people were glad to see him go. He was left with one of the top SEC units, and turned it into one of the worst. Auburn’s defense was MIA during Roof’s tenure. They had to outscore teams to get wins which is why most point to Cam Newton as the reason they won in 2010.

Brian Van Gorder took over for Ted Roof at Auburn and didnt have a lot good to say about the state of the program on that side of the ball. Van Gorder likes to dictate to an offense. Roof doesnt. He runs a more passive, gap filling scheme which never worked at Auburn. Anything can happen, but recent history points to a continuation of the defensive struggles at Tech.

Again, he was going to be on Gailey’s staff as a Linebacker coach, but Gailey cut his pay in a third and he went to Duke to DC. It’s not X’s and O’s, it’s the Johnny’s and Joe’s. We need him to recruit talent and then coach them up. We have some guys who have redshirted who “look” good in a clean uni, but we shall see how they stack up. And everyone wanting to get some top name DC, send your checks to the Athletic department.

2001:
23rd in Run Defense
53rd in Pass Defense
32nd in Total Defense
37th in Scoring Defense

It wasn’t amazingly great but it was nowhere close to horrible. It would be miles better than anything we have had recently.

Either Johnson is doing this on purpose because he knows he needs a scapegoat on defense, or he just doesnt know how to hire on that side of the ball. Al Groh had a better overall resume than Roof, and I thought Groh was an overrated hire as well. His D at Virginia wasnt that good, so why would he be able to come in here and turn us around? Same with Roof. If Roof cant build a defense worth putting on the field at Auburn with top 10 recruiting classes, how is he going to turn this program around? Go get someone that actually has a standing resume of real success at a level you know will turn this program around.

OK.. I’m back off the ledge of the Sunshine Skayway… I definitely don’t like this hire! I saw enough of Ted Roof’s Defense the last time he was here at Tech. That said, I’m ready to give him a chance. In my thinking, this is CPJs last chance. I’ve supported him for 5 years, but the D has to improve. If he thinks Ted’s the man for the job.. OK, but he better be right this time.

@Tech1986 – its not about getting a top D coordinator. How about just getting one that is good? You dont even need to go get a guy from a top school either. Mark Richt got Brian Van Gorder from Western Michigan I think. Grantham was a linebackers coach at Dallas. There are a lot of good D coordinators at mid-major conferences or that are position coaches. You just have to know what your looking for. That’s where I think Johnson falls short. I dont think he really knows what kind of DC he needs for this program.

@Tech Troll – if you want to jump up and down about Roof go ahead. Fact is, his defense at Auburn was terrible and was statistically the worst in Auburn history in 2011. They averaged giving up over 400 yards per game in 2011. Its not my job to evaluate coordinators, but it doesnt have to be for me to see there was something seriously bad about his tenure at Auburn, as school that recruits with the best in the country.

Sure I do. I like the most recent history. With a Penn St team in shambles from controversy he managed to have a defense that was much higher in every possible category than GT was. The most points his defense gave up all season was 35 to a good Ohio St team. GT gave up over 35 six times. Sorry we didn’t hire Bill Parcells like you might have hoped but for the money we have to offer and the DC’s available he wasn’t a bad hire and he could possibly improve things whether Tech fans want him to or not.

@ Mike, good point and you may be right, he might not know what he is looking for. However, many folks on the blogs want some top notch guy, like Kirby Smart, we can’t pay that kind of money. A young up and comer would be good, but again I would prefer someone who wants to be at Tech and not use this for a larger job, a little selfish on my part, but I believe in loyalty. Look at that Manny Diaz, did a great job at MSU, went to Texas and in his second year, their defense was not that good. I think we need a recruiter who understands Tech’s advantages and disadvantages and can get across to the student athlete that the advantages far out way the disadvantages (Math and science).

GTBob, Penn St. was not a unit in shambles from a talent perspective. OK they had to mentally overcome a lot with the whole Sandusky mess. Give O’Brien and his staff a lot of credit overcoming that, but Penn St.’s D was very good in 2011. The most points they gave up was 27 to Alabama before the final game of the year when they fell apart against Wisconsin in the wake of all that went on.

Roof’s Auburn tenure is what is troublesome.

@Tech1986 – I agree, we wont ever get a big name guy in here, but then often the big name isnt the one you really want. Like you said, you never know what will happen when they get here. Thats why I think looking at mid-major conferences is a good idea. Often coaches at that level have good schemes, just not enough talent to run them. Tech cant recruit with UGA, but they are better recruiting than a mid-major team.

Our talent level isn’t nearly that bad. People like to pretend that we just picked up some random students from the electrical engineering building but we actually do have several defensive players who were rated pretty high in high school and were coveted by other major programs.

Simply mindblowing!! One can find a surfeit of comments on the blogs from any perspective you want to look at. However, a lot of these comments today & yesterday on CPJ hiring Ted Roof seem to be on the not too logical side….which I thought would be where Tech people would excel. Some of y’all are the hardest to please people ever. Some of y’all are the most negative people ever. Some of y’all have the thickest, hardest heads ever. People! We have seen the offense control the ball and and score points and win games with an adequate QB. Now that everyone mostly agrees that QB play will be better, thus making offensive play better, all GT needs is a defense that is ranked somewhere in the top 1/3 in the nation instead of the middle 1/3 like we had. CCK had the defense trending that way. The stats for CTR’s past indicate that he can at least do that good a job for Tech. For God’s sake everyone, quit with all the knee jerk reactions and take a deep breath and relax. Enjoy the off season, watch the NFL playoffs & SB, play a little golf, drink a beer or three and see how the guys look in the spring game. CPJ wants to be a success. CTR wants to be a success. Let’s just sit back & watch things unfold and enjoy what I see as a bright future for GT FB….& BB too as the kids gain in experience. Don’t be surprised if they make the NCAA dance this year, by a slim margin. GOOOOO JACKETS THWGeorgie

He ran a leaky Roof D at Tech, never blitzing, and teams passed like crazy b/c LBs could not cover receivers well except for maybe tight ends who are more their sizes. He also wore black, half of Georgia’s colors. The prez of Tech Alum Assn came on Tech Topics after Black Watch years and said “black is out”. Ted wasn’t a good D coach then b/c of lack of experience, but for Cam Newton’s Nat Champ team he finally became good at coaching D. So we expect him to drop black tar paper leaks and coach as he did at Auburn. He could remind team to get flu shots during GT Girl pink powder puff breast cancer awareness month. NO pink and NO black unis, no girl powder puff football games. Blitz, safety blitzes, rush DEs to curl around blockers and then back toward the los where qb is looking for receivers.

Like seeing a Tech guy get the job, but folks in the end it doenst matter. If Johnson doesn’t start opening up the offense, able to throw the ball downfield with success and stop running the same 5 plays, it wont really matter how good or bad our defense is. Teams with disciplined and physical defenses (BYU, UGA, VT, FSU) showed how easy it is to stop a one dimensial offense.

Joe Hamilton got screwed on the Heisman because the media was into the “lifetime achievement” award theme in 99. Ron Dayne won it because of all the yards he gained in 4 years, setting NCAA career records. The media had a bias that year, Little Joe was the “most outstanding player” that year, he and Tech got screwed.

Coach Roof had one decent year at Auburn because 1. he had the best defensive player in the country (Nick Fairley) and 2. the offense had the best offensive player in the country (Cam Newton).

@GTBob
I am not saying that he won’t be an improvement over Groh (or Wommack); but in 3 years at Tech, his defenses never dictated the game (even with all the talent he had in 2001). Both Edsell’s defense in 1998 and Tenuta’s defenses had the ability to dictate the outcome of the game–to come up with big stops in big game situations. I don’t remember Roof’s defenses ever being able to do that.

I disagree with Mark Bradley and others who consistently question our defensive talent–I think that with the exception of a young line, our defensive talent is very good (at least for us). I just don’t think that Coach Roof has the ability to make our defense into one that can influence wins (on its own).

WHAT? Call me crazy, but I didn’t see this coming. He was awful at GT as a defensive coach then defensive coordinator, he was awful at Duke as a head coach, he was awful at Auburn, even though he was on their NC team, but Auburn had a quarterback and offense that could outscore everyone. There weren’t too many teams their defense ever stopped. Ok, he had a decent year at Penn State, but what’s the old saying about a blind squirll can find a nut every now and then. Hope it works out, but I’ve got some very big doubts about this hire.

Thank you Lord. FINALLY Tech has a piece of good news. Roof was a terrible head coach but a wonderful defensive coordinator. He has succeeded everywhere he has gone including Tech in the Keith Brooking & Ron Rogers days. I don’t think most people remember just how many defensive guys he put into the NFL. This will also be HUGE for recruiting. I’ve met Roof and he’s really likable and obviously extremely smart and could’ve been just as successful as an engineer. His coaching schemes are really complicated, but he’s a much better teacher than Groh (apparently). Roof also loves to blitz often, so guys will enjoy playing for him. As a hometown guy, he will be able to recruit much better than an outsider would have. This may end up being the thing that finally puts Tech back on the right side of things. Give Johnson credit for thinking of the one guy that fits perfectly and getting him to come back. I can’t imagine that the insane little bubble that is Penn State was very comfortable….probably like being the only sane person in the twilight zone. He was a great coordinator at Auburn too for two years (but had one disastrous year that ended it), by the way….and Chizik can ALSO thank Roof for the national title. Folks, we just got the defensive coordinator from the NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP team from two years ago.

For all you folks complaining….yes Roof was a HORRIBLE head coach. No arguments there at all. However, I maintain that other than a really bad year at Tech and one at Auburn, he has otherwise been a good coordinator. He is the best we were going to get right now and this will be a HUGE help to Paul Johnson’s complete incompetence at recruiting (after all you have to wonder what the HELL CPJ is doing. Is he farting at dinner at recruits houses or something?). Bud Foster or Kirby Smart are not just going to come to 8-4 or 7-5 Georgia Tech.
