Tech takes on Maryland transfer

Former Maryland offensive lineman Nick Brigham has transferred to Georgia Tech. He will be a walk-on to the team and have the opportunity to earn a scholarship. Brigham, a Marist School grad, withdrew from Maryland in September, citing personal reasons. He began classes Monday.

“He looks good and seems happy and ready to go and excited about Georgia Tech,” Marist coach Alan Chadwick said. “I think he’ll definitely fit into that offensive system extremely well.”

ESPN.com rated him the No. 28 player in Georgia and the No. 24 guard in the country coming out of Marist, which has also sent former B-back Preston Lyons and current backs Matt Connors and Sam McNearney to Tech, among many others. Marist runs an offense similar to Tech’s.

Tech recruited Brigham in high school, but Brigham committed to Maryland shortly after the end of his junior season and remained firm to the school. Chadwick said that “it just didn’t quite work out for him there.”

Good luck to Brigham. Hopefully, for him, he’ll be able to earn a scholarship.
How many players has Randy Edsel lost to transfer now?

Nothing wrong with picking up what was once the #24 rated guard in the country with experience in the triple option! Welcome Nick. Good luck to you.

Since he didn’t play in the Fall, does he still have to sit out a year, especially since he is starting out as a walk-on?

Is there a simple explanation why Tech seems to recruit offensive linemen well, but seems to have some difficulty recruiting defensive linemen?

Who said they recruited OL well TC? For the most part we have undersized, under talented, and in game time over wrought OLineman… There are a few exceptions, but only a few…

…even as a walk-on (in fact, most transfrers are “walk-ons”), a guy will have to sit out when transferring from on D1 – another D1 – but, if his “personal” reasons involve being closer to a sick parent or something like that then he can apply for a waiver from the NCAA to be eligible right away…

…geez – “from one D1 to another D1″ – even if he did not play last Fall…there has to be one full year from when the transfer takes place before he is eligible to play…

per the recruiting service’s web-sites, these guys were rated as 4-stars (current on the roster or will be on the roster):

O-Line: Uzzi, Jackson, DeVine, Hall, O’Reilly, Brigham.

D-Line: Cross, Williams, Green, McCoy, Kallon.

So, we have recruited decently on both sides of the line. On the D-line, Cross has been consistent playing since he was a freshman but never developed into a playmaker. The heralded 2010 class hasn’t met expectations (thus far). Williams and Green were both hurt and this year was the first where both were healthy. McCoy had the heart problem and didn’t even see a down of football before he had to call it quits.

I intend to be in Chestnut Hill on March 9th – it’s an easy drive for me. Syracuse is quite a drive for me – have to see when they come on the schedule.

I was in the same security line as the BC b’ball team in Logan at the end of November. They were flying out to Happy Valley for the ACC-Big 10 Challenge (they beat PSU by >10). Up close they did not look very imposing.

@ gt4ever……Tech’s O-line sure played well enough against a BIG USC D-line, and don’t tell me that was because Barclay didn’t play.

@ Ordinarily……that’s what I thought, but I was hoping that since he never played this past Fall and is transferring in as a walk-on, it might be different.

With all those having been redshirted, plus incoming recruits, the D-line ain’t gonna be so small either.

I am in Durham – 20 minutes up 108 from Exeter. I was actually down in Exeter all day yesterday – my wife was in the Exeter Hospital for outpatient surgery.
BTW- I hope you aren’t a Phillips guy. I have a good friend who is a Duke PhD and he had nasty things to say about the Phillips grads at Duke.
