Orwin Smith chosen for all-star game

Former Georgia Tech A-back Orwin Smith will play in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, a pre-draft all-star game to be held Jan. 19 in Carson, Calif.

Smith finished the season with 682 rushing yards on 79 carries, an 8.6 yards-per-carry average. He led the team in receiving yards with 288 on 18 catches, a 24.0 yards-per-reception average. He fell just 15 yards short of leading the team in both rushing and receiving yards.

Other players committed to playing are Virginia Tech linebacker Bruce Taylor, Miami running back Mike James and defensive back Vaughn Telemaque, N.C. State defensive end Brian Slay and Georgia running back Richard Samuel.

The game will be broadcast at 6 p.m. on ESPN2.

Nice for Orwin (and UGA’s Samuel). RS was a qaulity young man who got bounced around the UGA team/position like a pinball, yet never did we hear of him whining about “not getting his love”. KUDOS to RS for being a TEAM FIRST player!

BTW, Ken, can you update us how/where Orwin finished on his August statement that he wanted to the lead not just the ACC but THE NATION in all purpose yards per game?

I always pitied RS because he had so much potential, but it was wasted because he was too selfless.

“I always pitied RS because he had so much potential, but it was wasted because he was too selfless.”

Wasted???????? I guess you didn’t see much of the guys playing in front of him because we rarely need to run the ball against your joke defense. They are about 220-230 with world class speed. Todd Gurley is probably bigger and stronger than most of your linebacking corp, if not all of it.

Tech fans never miss an opportunity to take a jab at UGA, no matter how painfully stupid it might be.

GT fan , how did Orwin Smiths 1237 total all purpose yards stack up nationally?108 yards per game didn’t come close to cracking the top 50.

Ken – Have you been able to confirm the Charles Kelly move? In addition, I am suprised that UZZI has not been invited to the all star game.

dawgfan RS is one of the only UGA players I actually like because he is such a good guy. However I am sad because of the bouncing around he never got a chance to shine like he should have(at linebacker btw because that’s what he is), and I hope he can make it at the next level, but I’m not sure if anyone will take a chance on him.

@dawgfan..it is funny how you you get on a GT blog and show how stupid you are by trying to blast GT fans..Gurley is a freshman so he could only play in front of RS for 1 year..the last 3 years he didn’t do much..so it was a waste that he was never turned out like UGA fans wanted him to..he was a 5 star out of high school and was 4th on the depth chart his SR year..I would say that was a waste..

Please say something else so I could shut you up again..I know you get a thrill out of talking trash on GT blogs than admit you have spent the last 5 years sitting at home watching all the BCS games..if you would worry about yourself as much as you worry about GT (a very bad team as you say)..you might have a chance to win a SEC Championship or National Championship

A prime example of why UGA will never be on the same level as Alabama..Alabama just won the NC game and are starting to look towards next year..UGA beat a 6-6 GT to end the season and that is all UGA fans can talk about..the programs are years apart

Nick Brigham is the transfer from Maryland. He played at Marist. 6′4″, 275 Offensive Lineman. He played in 4 games this past Fall, and came home due to personal reasons. He’s walking on at Tech and will have 3 years of eligibility remaining. Expect him to earn a scholarship after the Spring is he performs as expected. like Sean Bedford and Tyler Kidney did.

Also, expect the Defensive Coordinator and AD to be announced Friday.

I fully expect the DC to be announced this week, but I would bet the AD is still several months off. That’s certainly what Peterson at least implied when I asked him about it in El Paso.

“UGA beat a 6-6 GT to end the season and that is all UGA fans can talk about..”

LOL. That’s all we talk about? No Techie. That’s all we talk about with you. We don’t need any comments from the Techie peanut gallery on the SEC Championship. I’d be interested in talking big boy football with a Bama fan, Florida fan, etc. any time and often do, but rarely do I feel the need to seek a Techies’ opinion on SEC titles and BCS bowl games That’d be like asking your average car mechanic how to build a rocket ship to Mars. This is a “prime example” of why Tech will never be on the same level as UGA. You are content with being mediocre as long as you have all of your excuses and myths.

“dawgfan RS is one of the only UGA players I actually like because he is such a good guy.”

LOL. That’s not a back handed compliment at all. Does it help you Techies sleep at night to convince yourselves that most of our football players are bad guys? I never trash the character of any of your football players. To the contrary, I often admire them for playing for some of the worst fans in all of sports. Why do Techies feel the need to stoop to such levels? Is it because you have absolutely nothing else to say to us? All you have is, in the words of Phil Collins, a pack of lies.

Thanks.

Those guys ALWAYS contribute to the conversation with informed, intelligent posts. You and superDwag and Old Dog, among others, have never had anything insightful or intelligent to say, and I doubt you ever will, because you are just so full of yourselves that you couldn’t care less what others think of you or how it might affect someone else. By the way..here is a fact for you..GT has gone to a BCS bowl game since UGA has..don’t say anything about conf that GT plays in..the 2nd best team in SEC got beat like a drum in a BCS game by a Big East team

The reason RS bounced around so much..

January 9th, 2013
12:40 pm

…at UGA was because he was not a D1 player – he earned the #1 running back spot yet was unable to produce on the field for that year and the next, and was not going to see much PT the next year so he was moved to LB since the team had a need for LB’s that year and he had played that position pretty well in HS, too.

But, even with a RS year he was a bust there, too, so he was moved back to RB for his SR year, with the hopes that he would go out and be a FB/RB who would contribute on the field by perfoming rather than just being a DGD, which he was absolutely a DGD…But with the freshmen RB’s duing what #3 and #4 did, and he could not learn to play FB, his fate was sealed.

Here’s hoping that maybe all the practice he did will translate to the pros – but, alas and alack, it is not probable since he really has a hard time NOT being tackled by only one guy, or the white chalk line, whichever gets him first…

Best of luck to Orwin but I don’t believe Tech has ever placed an A-back in the NFL. B-back is far better suited to the NFL game – JDwyer & AA.

IMO Richard Samuel is better suited to fullback than tailback. If he’s not drafted, I’d wager RS gets tryout offers as an undrafted free agent (Falcons could use a stout FB who can blow up LBs and catch passes).

Congrats to Orwin. I can see him as a slot receiver in the pros with the occasional move to the backfield, if his blocking is good.

Funny how dawgfan brings up a “rocket ship to Mars” in a comparison between U[sic]GA and Tech. As of right now Tech has produced 12 astronauts, compared to a big fat 0 from the mutts. I’d venture to say we know a whole lot more about “rocket ships” than y’all.

As for Orwin Smith, he has long been Tech’s best playmaker offensively and I could definitely see him doing well at the next level, if not immediately then maybe after a year or two off the practice squad like Dwyer. His ability to catch and block definitely give him a pretty good advantage.

Tech always seems to have that one back that steps up and just becomes the go-to guy in the offense. Look for Robert Godhigh III (the real RG3) to be next in line.
