Donovan Wilson enrolls early at Tech

Ohio running back Donovan Wilson, a Georgia Tech commit, has begun classes as an early enrollee. He’ll be eligible to take part in spring practice later on in the semester and get a head start on his freshman season.

Wilson committed to Tech last May over Purdue, Boston College and Air Force. He was recruited by special-teams coordinator David Walkosky, who has been able to open up the Ohio area for Tech with significant coaching experience in that fertile state. Recruiting service Rivals rated Wilson a three-star prospect and the No. 57 player in Ohio.

In May, he was listed at 6-foot-0 and 215 pounds and projected to play A-back. He is the only 2013 Tech commit who has enrolled early.

Since he enrolled early, does that open up another scholarship position for 2013? Isn’t that how UGA manages to get so many each year? Not putting them down for doing it, but if it works for them, it should work for us too.

@JAdams..why does he care who runs the defense..he is going to play offense

I doubt an A-back cares much who will be coaching the defense.

…you may be confusing UGA with AL – AL almost always signs more than allowed and “grayshirts” (gets the signee to enroll in Jan. instead of in August – but only for those that are NOT superstars, yet) – in fact, AL is the reason the NCAA has cracked down on this practice of signing more than allowed with the hopes of using a “grayshirt”…Saban is well known for yanking a kids scholarship (remembver, scholarships are only good for one year at a time and are renewable at the discretion of the headh coach) if the player is not producing in order to have a “grayshirt” available to prove himself…

Now, as for UGA, Mark Richt has been a staunch advocate of NOT doing this – however, this year they have the ability to sign up to 35 new players (usually a school cannot sign more than 25) but only because they had a huge amount of attrition the last couple of years from all the bad guys that got kicked off the team for one reason or another, thus leaving open at least 10 scholarships that have not been used due to this attrition.

Also, just as Tech is doing, if a team has ’ships left over from the annual 25 that were not used, the early enrollees count against the previous year’s numbers – the Tech guy who just enrolled will count against the 2012 recruits, not 2013. Tech is only signing about 18 this year due to not much attrition…

The seemingly “oversigning” problem arises due to being allowed up to 25 ’ships per year, yet only having a maximum of 85 on ’ship at any given time – the math does not work over a 4-5 year period since 4 years x 25 per year = 100, yet you can only have a max of 85 on ’ship…you have to either 1) run off at least 15 players over that 4-5 year period; or, 2) be awfully “unlucky” and have a bunch of people get hurt; or, 3) have a bunch of hooligans that either quit or get kicked off the team…ech and UGA both do not practice “running people off” – unlike AL, AR, and others…

SS…long time no talk. The reason the DWAGS get away with it is because they turnover 5-10 kids a year. They started the 2013 recruiting cycle with almost 35 available scholarship spots. They early enroll kids to get their current year recruiting class at 25 or under, but Tech can’t do that because we only have 1 schollie available right now.

Now PJ has increased his recruiting with battling Purdue, BC and Air Force for kids instead of MTSU and Memphis. If he was that a big star in Ohio, why wasnt Urban after him ? Do we still have PJ’s ” long snapper ” that had to be signed 2 seasons ago? or the “diamond in the ruff ” from last season ?

@ Actually…..this is not the same as the “greyshirt” policy that Saban uses. That one SHOULD be totally illegal. UHA does NOT do that, but UGA DOES use early admits in order to open up scholarships for the year originally committed to. That is NOT illegal, and there was an online article a few weeks ago that said that UGA does it. Like I said in my original post, I was not putting down the dawgs for doing things that way, as long as it remains legal; I was just questioning if this is a similar situation.

Since most schools redshirt freshman, unless they are 4/5 star, then the magic number is 17 per year assuming nobody leaves early for the nfl or transfers/etc. So GT is doing their players right, not cutting poor performers or losing players to criminal activities.

Don’t understand kids jumping into a 35 player recruiting class when the school has 85 people on scholarship already. Yes, they all think they are the next Hershel Walker, but many good players ride the bench at an Alabama when they could be playing for a GT or NC State.

For what it’s worth!

I don’t have time to explain it all. GA had a small signing class for 2012. They could have 10 early enrollees count against 2012. Actually 13 enrolled early, so 3 count against 2013. GA only had 60 something players on scholarship this year, not 85. Look it up & you SHOULD be able to figure it out. Also, not all Players that leave are because of bad conduct. GA normally has players leave early to enter the NFL Draft. This year:
Geathers
Ogletree
Jones
That’s all I can think of now, but we have players leave every year because of graduation also. We do not have the chance to sign 35 every year. 25 a year is the maximum for everyone.

If GT didn’t get 25 from 2011, and is not over the 85 limit, he could count against last years class, and they would still have 25 to get for this years class. That’s how it works in the NCAA.
GT had a rather small class last year I think, so he could be counted that way. It looks like GT has a rather small one this year as well, with about 14-15 that have verbally committed, so maybe next year they can have a large class coming in.

Wow–Another 3 star big whoop!!! Being a Tech fan is self-torture. Nothing to look forward to but beating a watered down USC team and getting a Sun Bowl trophy while acting like you just won the national championship. The option is getting old and so is the lack of a real football team on North Ave. What a joke!!!!

Is Roof a good recruiter? We still need a good recruiting coach and we should be set in the coaching staff. Calling Giff Smith—please! Roof should at least give us a solid D. If we open up the offense with a little more passing—-try to throw 20 times a game and as someone wrote above (too lazy to look back), we need a bigger B back. Sims and Laskey do a good job, but we need a 230 lb B-back that you can’t arm tackle as they bust through the line. It’s easier to get one monster running back than 5 monster lineman.
