Some thoughts and notes. Game starts 2 p.m. ET on CBS.
1. I think Tech will enjoy considerable support from the Sun Bowl crowd, which is largely made up of locals. After the 16,000 tickets allocated to the participating schools, the other 34,000 are sold to the El Paso community. As you may have read, USC stirred up controversy by showing up late for a Sun Bowl dinner and with two tweets sent by players criticizing the city of El Paso, which I’m going to guess has not sat well with residents. Further, Tech’s coaches and players have done nothing but rave about how welcome they feel and are enjoying the experience (which I think is genuine).
2. Weather: It’s sunny and very windy. The forecast calls for winds 20-30 mph, and it certainly feels like it. The wind right now (12:30 ET) is blowing briskly to the south, I think. Left to right on the television, at any rate.
Watching warmups, David Scully and Chris Tanner had trouble hitting from 45 going into the wind. Scully, at least, has range probably 10 yards longer than that. He crushed one from 55 with the wind.
3. If Tech gives up 35 points, the team will have the highest points-per-game allowed average going back at least to 1948. The 1999 team, which went 8-4 in Joe Hamilton’s final season, gave up an average of 30.3 points. Tech’s average through the ACC Championship game is 29.9.
4. There are two current Jackets who share Tech bowl records – Tevin Washington (completion percentage, 11-15 against Utah, tied with Shawn Jones in the 1991 Citrus Bowl) and Quayshawn Nealy (longest interception return, 74 yards, against Utah, tied with W.P. McHugh in the 1947 Oil Bowl)
5. Tech will wear blue jerseys, gold helmets, white pants.
6. The line is down to seven or 7.5 points in favor of USC. It had opened around 10. I’d guess Matt Barkley’s being ruled out played a big part in the drop.
7. Interesting – at 7-5, USC is still No. 20 in Sagarin ratings, presumably because their strength of schedule is ranked 13th. Tech is 63rd. Strength of schedule is 55th.
8. Tech marching band is here. Hopefully the altitude won’t affect the brass section.

Nope the line didn’t move after MB was announced he wouldn’t play. It was known throughout he wouldn’t. It has fallen because of the injury to their top receiver and arguably the best in the game. I still think usc will crush gt. they will be mad they are at this game and take it out on gt. Anyone else notice triple option teams, af navy have done terribly in bowl games. I think this offense is now easy to contain for teams with a decent defense.

A disgraceful call by that official. Happened earlier this year, too, I believe, and espn kept showing it as one of the “Not Top 10s.” They reviewed that one and ruled in FAVOR of the ref. Thankfully, they’re reviewing today’s, which shouldn’t have taken nearly this long. Guess the officials were trying to save face by acting like it was close.

Here’s the problem with CPJ: he gives tevin 2 drives, then 2 for vad. If they perform equally, Tevin plays the rest of the game (like the UGA game, FSU, etc.). He ignores the fact that Vad is a superior playmaker.

I’ve said all year that the problem Vad Lee has is the PITCH. he is not very good at it. He makes the choice late. he floats it and he leaves it behind the RB or to his back shoulder too many time.
Vad has to work hard on the pitch this summer.

5150 – did he make a late pitch on the play that he fumbled? He didn’t have a chance to turn to make the pitch before the back-side D-lineman (unblocked) had hands on him. I agree that VL is not as proficient with the option as he should be, but neither was Nesbitt his 1st year. VL is Nesbitt with a legitimate arm.

that last play was a missed assignment by the backside OL who forgot to chip the DE. That allowed he DE to come straight up the line and hit the QB before the play could develop. QB gets hit from behind on an option play is like a QB being blindsided while looking down field to throw the ball. In neither case is the QB expected to tuck the ball away because it prevents him from doing what he needs to do. That play is 90% on the back side blocking.
Tevin’s a senior QB who is making the same mistakes now as he did in his first game and does nothing to make up for it. Lee is a freshman QB who made one mistake that is due to him not getting the experience early in the year that he should have. If he’s still making these mistakes in two years he’ll get the same treatment as Washington.

I love the way our defense has played today, and the special teams are looking pretty good too (for the most part). The offense has had some moments, but overall the option hasn’t been terribly effective against the speed of the Trojan defense. Still, if the USC QB continues to bounce his forward passes toward his receivers, we’ve got a VERY GOOD chance of winning this game!

Tech’s multi-millionaires like to put their names on a building they make a large contribution to.
McCammish Pavilion is a recent example.
I do not think they will pay to get rid of Paul Johnson.
So a bowl loss will not get him fired.
Even when we get a good coach like Ross (but not great), he dumps us the first chance he gets.
Maybe we should just make CPJ earn his pay.
No guarantee a new AD will do any better.
Anyway if we have both Hewitt and Johnson to pay off, u can celebrate because I’ll be done with being a season ticket holder.

Tech, second half, up 14-7 early, better type fast, USC may be on Tech’s goal before I finish this line. Paul Johnson is improvising ways to lose, to run his “great” bowl record to 0-5 at Tech. Course, he’s a self-described genius and its never his fault they have a losing season or improve to 0-5 in his illustrious bowl career at Tech. Get the search committee ready before he’s afforded the opportunity to run it to 0-6 next year. He can go losing seasons back to back and be back in El Paso in 2013.

FSU was overrated and over looking us. Miami buying ladies of the night for recruits got us into the game to begin with.
Possibly winning against that deer in the headlights QB for USC isn’t much of an accomplishment. Would make CPJ 1-3 in bowls. An empty cupboard as far as recruiting goes.

1990, we tied for first, not third in the Coastal. No, the season hasn’t gone like I would have liked, but they played pretty well in the second half of the season.
Yes, USC is without Barkley, but we can’t control that. After seven straight bowl losses, I just want to end the season with a win for a change.

Nesbitt liked to call his own number too.
Like the time he nearly blew the 2009 season by getting sacked instead of throwing it downfield.
I go into detail because Tevin gets criticized for the same thing.
Nesbitt’s screwup is not remembered by many because he had a defense that could occasionally save him and the season.
Derrick Morgan made a game saving tackle at the end of the 2009 Wake game to push them out of FG range.
In spite of that, a friend’s wife spent the game saying I can’t believe we cannot stop Wake.
She was right.

The fact is that most fans who really care a lot about winning big are going to be disappointed in most seasons. Even so, we have the right to complain. It’s part of our way of being a fan. That doesn’t mean we love our team any more or less. It just means that we set our bar a little higher and probably need a Xanax from time to time.

Best I’ve seen the D play in last five years. Hard to gauge how much was inspired play and how much was a down USC team that didn’t want to be there. Regardless, congratulations to coach Kelly and the young men.
Can’t believe I’m saying this, but Kelly may have just earned a shot at DC position.

Better teams don’t bring their “A” game and they get beat by harder working, more motivated teams. ‘Cuse beats WV, Baylor beats UCLA, to name a couple this year. Neb got embarrased in their last game, Dawgs are feeling disappointed. Dawgs are definitely the better teams, but NOT if they don’t show up !! BTW, nice win Jackets !

Nope the line didn’t move after MB was announced he wouldn’t play. It was known throughout he wouldn’t. It has fallen because of the injury to their top receiver and arguably the best in the game. I still think usc will crush gt. they will be mad they are at this game and take it out on gt. Anyone else notice triple option teams, af navy have done terribly in bowl games. I think this offense is now easy to contain for teams with a decent defense.

I think I am correct in stating that since 2003, Tech has defeated three Preason #1’s: Auburn in 2003, Muttland in 2008, and USC in 2012. I think the only loss was to ND in 2006 and we should have won that one.

@tired – No, they’re just people who have been paying attention. Don’t get me wrong – I’m happy that Tech won today and think it was a good victory for the program. But, it doesn’t change the fact that Paul Johnson is 1-4 versus UGA, 1-4 versus VT, 1-4 versus Miami, and 1-4 versus bowl opponents. Since Tech clinched the ACC Coastal Division in mid-November 2009, Johnson is 22-21 with a combined record of 3-15 against UGA, VT, Miami, Clemson, and bowl opponents. Four consecutive losses to Georgia! That’s horrible.
Georgia Tech could and should do better.

Kelly seems to have the kids in the proper position to make plays, I’ve said all along the talent level was good enough for a solid defense, it now seems as if they are being properly coached. I lay that at the feet of Coach Kelly and feels he deserves serious cosideration.

Best defensive showing of the year. Coach Kelly had the players ready. Well coached and seldom out of position. CPJ would be dumb NOT to hire him. Shutting down USC with their 2 great WR’s is an awesome feat. Regardless if they had the starting QB or not. The defense was well coached. This game made tech’s appeal worth the effort on the NCAA. Finishing 7-7 considering how bad the year started is a victory in itself. No one. and I mean no one really gave GT a chance in this game. I am so glad GT made them look wrong. So happy for all the players.

Those blue jerseys worked fine during 1990 season – perhaps, they still have some luck in them.
Overall: decent game. End of year success, leads to starting new year on right footing. Would like to have seen over 300 yards rushing day, but like the defensive stops and about time GT got our share of turnovers. 73 offensive plays to 59, very good: take away the stupid late penalties and USC has only 7 first downs, and couple drives stoppe and the play total differentil would have been wider.

Good win for the program today. The defense played the most part the way they should have played all year. I could not believe that our kicker put the ball in the end zone on every kickoff. Should have done the all year. A little disappointed after we were up and the d seemed to relax a little, but they bowed up and played well. I was disappointed at the end with 3 straight 15 yard penalties. No excuse for that. Also disappointed that CPJ did not play Lee more. Even thou he had 2 turnovers, it was a different team when he was in.
I thought Kelley did and excellent job calling defensive signals today, and if I were CPJ I would give him serious consideration in making him head defensive coach. This win today was a good stepping board for next year. GO Jackets

I lived in west TX for 4 years–perfect place to raise a lot of hell, and by God I obliged them, but the lack of rain and tall trees just don’t set well with a GA boy. Just as somebody from the plains feels claustrophobic in a blue ridge holler.

Regarding this game, I was amazed at our defense; we have not been known for it lately. I think the only way the spread triple option will succeed is if it’s complemented by a take-no-prisoners defense. Recruiters should focus on this.

Great win for the Jackets. No one can honestly say they saw it coming. Having said that, those 4 major penalties in the last few minutes were embarrassing. I would have liked to have seen Tech have more class in victory. Also, the profanity on live TV was not a high moment,either. The biggest loser in this game is the AJC and their lack of support for the hometown team. What a bunch of losers.!! So sad to see them come to this after the great days of the 60s and 70s when they had a real sports page – one that I personally bought the paper for – threw the rest of the paper in the trash. CPJ’s not going to be fired nor should he. All Tech fans are aware of the games lost and the games won. I am of the opinion the future is bright and the team is in good hands. I’ve watched the coaches at Tech since the Bud Carson days and I’m happy that CPJ is Tech’s coach. Having said that IF the team and coaches don’t build off this game, the efforts shown I will be very disappointed. Despite SCs record and coaching that is a team of very good athletes Tech beat today and it should be great starting point for 2013!

A paper reports and opinionates on whatever will sell the best. If AJC sports is biased, it would be because it figures there are few Tech people in it’s market. Tech grads are typically deployed globally (and as a fellow AE, I’m sure you’ll agree they’re galactic, also), so I imagine the AJC doesn’t focus on Tech much. Though a native, I have no problem with that.
The quality of print media Sports in 60s/70s, particularly columns like Bisher no longer exist. Now, everyone writes like a punk in order to get the most hits, which the advertisers pay for (you’re welcome, AJC). I assume your pard in Dallas enjoyed Bisher’s columns particularly, because he already had Blackie Sherrod to enjoy in the TX papers. Those were the days.

A win is a win, but lets face it…
1) this was a USC team minus Matt Barkley. If you think Barkley playing over the red shirt Freshman they started at QB wouldnt make a difference against our defense, then your kidding yourself.
2) This was also not a very good USC defense that got pretty much smoked in the PAC 12. Monte Kiffin is “retiring” because of it. We managed 2 TDs outside of the one where we were set up at the one yard line. That’s not very good, and points to the fact that this offense can be contained by pretty much anyone with more than a week to prepare.
Enjoy the win for what it is…a streak snapper. If you think this is “something to build on” or a sign of a bright future, we are in serious trouble haha.

Don’t forget back in 2008 when preseason #1 UGA had 2 weeks to prepare for GT what happened then too. Most points GT has posted vs UGA under PJ.

I may stand corrected on the losses last year but I’m far from a PJ supporter. None-the-less he called a decent game yesterday. Our boys got the W against a highly respected program -so have a seat southern troll.
