USC stood up Georgia Tech for a Sun Bowl dinner Wednesday night, reportedly showing up more than 90 minutes late for a function. By the time the Trojans party arrived, Tech had already left to return to its team hotel.
A later-than-scheduled practice was partly to blame, according to an online report from the L.A. Daily News.
It is another faux pas for USC in its relations with the host city of El Paso, Texas. Shortly after the team was chosen to play in the Sun, a Trojans linebacker sent out a Twitter message critical of El Paso. Another USC football player sent out a tweet Wednesday describing El Paso as an “(expletive) city.”

Those of you who are old enough (or know history) should harken back to the Fiesta Bowl that followed the 1986 season (played in January of 1987), between Penn State and favored Miami. The Hurricanes were in their “commando” period then, and treated Penn State as though it was an afterthought. Several interceptions later, the Nittany Lions had a victory over Vinny Testaverde and the humiliated ‘Canes. Bobby Dodd often said, “Respect your opponent.”

I have been a Tech fan for fifty years but I don’t blame USC. to much, though in the South knows that Kiffin has no class whatsoever. Their absence might have been a protest over having to play a team so crummy that they got stomped by Middle Tennessee State. We did not deserve a bowl bid this year. I am hoping next year will be different but this year’s team is a joke. We will take a terrible beating and end up playing against the USC scrubs in the fourth quarter. I hope I am wrong, but I doubt it.

He was a redshirt freshman in August 2011 when it was announced by Tech coach Paul Johnson that the defensive lineman’s football career was likely over due to an undisclosed medical condition.”…
And the hits just keep on keepin’ on – sort of like UGA “thugs”, but this season they seem to be “related” to Tech…
Oh, and why are you surprised that Kiffin would pull a stunt like this – sure glad CPJ one upped him and left, too…

Reminds me of the 1983 Sun Bowl between Alabama and SMU. WIth SMU being an in-state team and Bama having to travel across 3/4 of the country just to get to the game, there would have been a huge “home field advantage” for the Mustangs….. EXCEPT some of the players said SMU deserved a better bowl game than the Sun Bowl. I was there and do not believe there were 50 people in the stands pulling for SMU. Worked out well, though, since the Crimson Tide led 28-0 at half time and only gave up one touchdown in the second half to dominate what was “supposed” to be a better team.

USC has the problem of having a 30 something year old spoiled brat for a coach… He may teach his players something about football, but he surely is incapable of teaching them anything about acting like a mature, responsible adult. I hope the Sun Bowl committee withholds part of the bowl money for failure to meet bowl obligations… of course, the only way Lane Kiffin will learn anything is if the Pac10 makes him personally make up the shortfall (and even then I’m skeptical).

According to Jason Kirk of SBNation.com, the Trojans were not delayed for any good reason either, as the official USC Athletics Twitter account tweeted a picture of Kiffin in a sombrero and announced that USC had officially arrived in San Antonio. Since the tweet was posted at 11:34 a.m. on December 26th and the Sun Bowl shindig was scheduled later that day, it seems there were no travel issues involved in the dinner diss. Perhaps a broken team bus?

EL PASO, Tex. — After suffering through a night of unremitting criticism for the late arrival at the Sheriff’s Posse Dinner Wednesday, USC has begun something of a defense.
And it’s a pretty good one.
All you have to do to put this into some sort of perspective is look at the official bowl schedule of events, one that USC shared with us, for the two teams on Wednesday.
Georgia Tech, which arrived late in town and did not practice, was to arrive at the dinner at 6:30 p.m. The Yellow Jackets arrived at 6.
USC was supposed to arrive at 6:45 for the buffet style meal that had one team following the other. USC arrived a half-hour late, at 7:15 p.m. and as they were getting there, and Georgia Tech was leaving, the thought was they’d actually timed it great because there was no line and they could go straight through.
Only later after the El Paso Times’ Duke Keith and a person with the Georgia Tech team tweeted that USC was late and it was something of an embarrassment or a gigantic faux pas, did USC realize how this was going. And that they were somehow at fault.
Because according to the official schedule, Georgia Tech was supposed to stay until 8:30 p.m. so the Yellow Jackets actually left an hour and 15 minutes earlier than they were supposed to. And got no criticism because, of course, they fired the first shot.
USC was caught totally surprised because they’d kept the Sun Bowl officials apprised all the way through and everyone knew they were running late as the result of a flight delay from LA.
“It wasn’t a problem for anybody,” USC Sports Information Director Tim Tessalone said Thursday. “No one was upset.”
And USC did stay all the way though so the Trojans actually spent the same time at the dinner as Georgia Tech did. And were closer to keeping to the original schedule than the Jackets, who left 75 minutes before they were supposed to, were. USC was just a half-hour late.
But in Lane Kiffin’s world, this is how it works. All criticism sticks. It’s all valid.
To be honest, one of the real differences here is USC isn’t looking to be offended as some in the Georgia Tech traveling party and the local media seem to be.

Terribly one sided article here. What time was USC supposed to arrive? 6:45. What time did they arrive? 7:15. Not sure where 90 minutes comes into this but I think they were only 30 minutes late. Equally, how awkward is it to show up 30 minutes early? Ask the techies. Further, when did the techies leave? Early or as USC was arriving…wait for it… both of those! Leaving 1 h 15 min early is “better” than showing up 30 min late??? Nice perspective here AJC!

However, I have to pull for the gnats against Lame Kiffen. He is reigning champ of classlessness in all of NCAA football. And frankly, I think it is time for CPJ and the buzzy-boys to FINALLY win a bowl game. I would not bet any money on it, but IT IS WAY PAST TIME.

The picture on Twitter is a hoax. Tech students did not flatten the USC bus tires. Once again Lane Kiffin shows what a disrespectful human being he is. He allowed his team to disrespect the city and bowl, now he has disrespected Tech. If they felt like they should have gotten a better bowl and opponent they should have won more games, they came into the season rated #1 and barely ended up bowl eligible, so either his players quit or he is a terrible coach. But thats besides the point here, he disrespected the entire bowl process. No one enjoys making fun of Ga Tech anymore than I do, but this was just a scumball act, or maybe it goes a long way in explaining USC’s 7-5 record this year, head coach is just an idiot.

Seems much ado about nothing. If anyone was slighted it was probably the bowl sponsors. Sounds like Tech was on time, ate then left. Then USC showed up and ate then left.

Enter your comments here with what the USC players are saying aboutEl Paso flat tires may have been locals. Go jackets!! If they already mentioned late practice its obvious they weren’t to interested. I just wasn’t to punch it in for tds all day. Our last two games I think were tougher than USCs last two and they played Notre Dame. UGA and FSU were tough opponents. I like our chances. Its not like they are a one or two loss team. They deserve the pairing same as we do like it or not Kiffin…

That being said, I’m glad they stood them up.

During the Braves division champion streak, every year they would have to be favored until someone else could show they could beat them. Until Johnson can show he can win a bowl game, you have to expect USCw to win this one. Nevertheless, GO JACKETS.

I am a Tech grad of ‘73. From what I’ve heard of Kiffin, it sounds like he is a carbon copy of CPJ. Tech has to put up with CPJ kicking off at first instead of receiving, with the pass plays from LOS snaps which often result in DLs tackling the qb at the LOS, and with running triple options to the sidelines as opposed to the goal line as if he wants the bench warmed up in a hurry. Also CPJ runs plays to the side of the field that is so narrow that a tight rope has to be walked on, as in the FSU Flying Circus, ok for FSU football. I belive USC did not show for the dinner because Tech did not show for flu shots during pink powder puff football breast cancer medical awareness month. This is another example of how we have to put up with CPJ’s arrogance. I believe that Barkley will enter the game as a surprise qb starter to save the game for USC, even though he is expected to not start. Notre Dame pulled this trick off against Tech when my dad was at Tech up until graduation in ‘51, with their coach faking a heart attack, motivating ND to play harder, but it was a fake. I believe the story went that the ND coach came back out onto Grant Field in the second half.

Grow up gents. Doesn’t matter if this happened to Georgia, Georgia Tech, or Georgia State. This was inexcusable for anything but a misprint in the itinerary or a problem with the bus…… a total classless act by Kiffin. If in fact this was due to practices running late, the USC AD should fire him on the spot. City of El Paso should make USC sleep on the bus from here on out. Fawk em all.

News flash! Tek is in for another beat down. Trojans are practicing and getting ready to play a football game. Meanwhile Tek is eating fried fish and hush-puppies.
Lane Kiffin is a first class POS but he will school CPJ and the techies. Book it – Tek finishes another season near the bottom.
But hey – things are looking up. CPJ has found a new blocking WR. In his never ending quest to find unearthed talent he has traveled to sub-Saharan Africa and uncovered a real “diamond in the rough”.
Hee Haw I crack myself up sometimes – “diamond in the rough” in .sub-Saharan Africa – get it?

As bad as Southern California’s football team is, and it is a sorry Southern California football team with losses in 4 of their last 5 games along with being only # 66 in the nation in rushing offense and # 59 in the nation in rushing defense and # 69 in the nation in turnovers, Georgie Tech has losses in 7 consecutive bowl games now and already has lost 7 games this season including to Middle Tennessee college who the next week lost to Louisiana Monroe 2 weeks after that lost 45-3 to Mississippi State and Middle Tennessee College lost their last game 45 to nothing.
This is just more embarrassment for Georgia Tech to even play the game, let alone be there at the

I’m not very confident that GT wins this game either, but to say Duke got crushed is just ABSURD… That game was close to the final 2 minutes… Duke played hard and above their abilities. I just wish GT had that kind of heart… I also wish they had Duke’s coach.. What a job he has done at Duke.

Duke was tied with 1:20 left. The guy fumbled at the 3 yard line of Cincy. They scored on a long passing play 30 seconds later. Then the duke qb was sacked and the ball flipped in the air and was caught and ran in for another score. Lost by 14. Hardly getting “slaughtered”. Only an idiot would say that which this board is full of.
Loser dwags on a gt board. I guess if duke got slaughtered losing by 14, uga got slaughtered x 2 losing by 28 to sc.

I just had lunch with the players at a Rotary event. So far as I could tell, everyone acted in a appropriate manner on both sides, but niether side really seemed that glad to be here. As for our Sun Bowl being a second rate, third rate or worse, please don’t judge unless you have experienced the decency and fan fair that our city gives these players. We’ll sell tickets even when other bowls are having trouble. The fans in El Paso come out in droves to support the nations second oldest bowl game (second only to the Rose Bowl), the nations first bowl game to gain a national sponsor, and the second longest continuous running sporting event on TV (second only to the Masters Tournament). El Paso has great weather, great food and great people. We were ranked “THE SAFEST CITY” in the country over 500,000 people, to spite being accross the border from the most dangerous city in the world. Do not mess with my city.
