Notes: Orwin Smith nears Tech record

Some notes, courtesy of the Georgia Tech sports information office.

1. A-back Orwin Smith can get into the school and ACC record books in the Sun Bowl.

Smith, who has 1,830 career rushing yards on 194 attempts for a 9.4 yards-per-carry average, will break the career yards-per-carry average with six carries to reach the minimum requirement to be considered. Roddy Jones holds the record at 7.59 ypc. He’ll break the record even if he’s stopped for no gain on all six. Smith would have to lose about 310 yards on the six carries for Jones to keep the record, although that would be a record in itself. I’d guess, though, he’d probably be benched after the second or third 50-yard loss.

The ACC requirement to be considered for single-season yards-per-carry is to average 65.0 yards per game. Smith is averaging 9.0 this season, which would be the second highest in history and second highest since Maryland’s Chet Hanulak averaged 9.78 yards per attempt in 1953. To average 65 yards for the season, Smith will have to gain 107 yards against USC.

Smith has no shot at the NCAA career record, held by Army’s Glenn Davis, the famed “Mr. Outside” of the mid-1940’s great Army teams. Davis’ record is 8.26 yards per carry, but the minimum requirement is 300 attempts.

2. Tech gave out five awards at its team banquet Friday evening. Offensive tackle Ray Beno and safety Isaiah Johnson received the effort awards, Jamal Golden was named the special teams player of the year and offensive lineman Freddie Burden and defensive lineman Pat Gamble were named scout-team players of the year.

Best dressed, though, would go to this guy:

3. Inside linebacker Jabari Hunt-Days, Synjyn’s brother, was named to the Scout.com/Fox Sports Freshman All-America first-team last week. Hunt-Days has started every game this season and is third on the team in tackle with 74 and has 4.5 tackles for loss, one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery.

There will be media availability following Thursday’s practice. Will have more notes up then. Thanks for reading.

And also, Ken, you aren’t giving Orwin much credit. He could certainly break the NCAA record.

He only needs to gain around 1,000 yards on 106 carries in the bowl game to do it. Against USC, that is very doable.

Ken, any information on where the staff is regarding the DC position? Are they waiting to make a decision until the new AD is hired or until the end of the season? Or are there moves being made “behind the scenes” we haven’t heard about? Any thoughts on likely candidates?

Will probably wait and see how the defense performs in a game before deciding which way to go with the DC position. If we do go with a new DC, I hope that we will completely clean house and give the new coach a chance to succeed with his system.

Nothing is imminent, as best I gather, on the defensive coordinator. I’d expect nothing to shake out until well after the bowl game, maybe after signing day.

We have plenty of good players we need to go back to the 4-3

3/4 is not the issue, alot of good defenses run 3/4, Alabama comes to mind.
3/4 is better for Tech because there is more LB’s to get then DT’s.

You still have to get 3 DL’s in the 3-4, one of which must be a monster to hold down the nose. Size, speed and bad disposition is a hard combo to recruit.

Yeah, Smith reminds me of OJ Simpson, the way he gains the 9 yards per carry. I could see him having a good game against USC. I tell you this though- Tech should receive if they win the coin toss, and they can try to run their running plays and establish them, but if they don’t work for the first set of downs and have to punt, they should switch to their pistol formations on the next offensive possession, and then alternate back and forth at random times. They are slow learners when it comes to assessing whether the running game will be shut down by defenses or not. They keep thinking that they can outmuscle the oppositions defensive line in the long run, but by the time they might do that its too late to catch up. Tech will need sacks and blitzes on D against USC. They haven’t blitzed much this year, but that does rattle qbs. I hope the ol’ alma mater can beat USC, but this Tech team is the weakest, most passive I’ve seen since I’ve looked at them play since the 60’s. Losing to MT, no DC and AD, kicking off first instead of receiving, the love affair with the color pink during an entire month devoted to breast cancer while snubbing flu shots at the same time- all of these indicate passivity and a lack of interest to play the game and lackadasical attitude toward everything at Tech that is expected of them as healthy players and students.

_______________

The fact that Isaiah Johnson got any kind of award after his play this year is an indication of how far Pajamas has allowed the talent level to deteriorate at GT under his watch.

Even with a watered-down ACC and a crappy OCC schedule that includes crappy D1-AA teamS (unfortunately plural), we’re going to be a 6-6 or 7-5 program for the foreseeable future, at least Chan was 7-5 vs. tougher schedules back when the ACC had a little more respect nationwide.

CPJ has been 6-7, 8-5, and now 6-8 (very likely) vs. the worst era of ACC FB, that makes 20 losses in 3 years.

If you can’t or won’t fire a guy for losing 19 or 20 games in 3 years, then you aren’t very serious about your CFB Program.

What GT fan ever thought they would live to see the day when guys like I. Johnson get an award at the team’s post season banquet?

Talk about poor Recruiting depleting a team’s talent level!

Sorry Techies but don’t see a big Sun Bowl win happening for you. It sounds like Barkley is going to play. You know what happens when your crap defense faces a QB that can actually hit the broad side of a barn with a football, which I know is a rarity in the ACC: Bad things. He’s probably already dialed up Murray for some tips on how to shred your pathetic secondary. Murray’s response was probably something like “just stay awake and don’t break both of your arms. If you do that you’ll be fine. I faced tougher defenses in high school.”

True story. If USC has any success whatsoever slowing down your triple option this one could get ugly quick.

Thanks.

Same thing could be said about the UGA defense. or lack of. I see Nebraska running up and down the field. Barkley isn’t the man to stop, it’s USC’s WR’s that are.Any somewhat decent QB could throw to them and look good. Barkley is overrated and Murray is underrated. If tech can keep the turnovers low and keep TW out of the game. We could win. TW is not a winner. Repeat not a winner. CPJ should put Lee in and let him just go to town.

______________

When does CPJ aka “Pajamas” have his “except for 1 year” Top-15 nationally ranked Recruiting class?

He’s had 5 Recruiting classes going into his 6th Recruiting class and he’s not bringing the TALENT, nor is he finding 5* guys that develop into future NFL & All-ACC guys like Chan did.

Your graphic above means nothing because after Chan’s classes were re-ranked after 3 years on campus they were always much higher ranked, usually in the Top-25, no one can say that about CPJ’s classes, he has NOT found the “diamonds in the rough” like Chan did, and it shows on the field.

Pajamas has decimated the Talent level in GT’s FB program!

I would be interesting in seeing these numbers. I am sure you would not say it if it were not true.

Actually CCG’s 07 class was 18th nationally per rivals rather than top 15, but I am sure it must have been adjusted up after the fact. I am sure some other’s ranked it top 15 to begin with. Either way it was the best class Tech has seen in many years before or since.

Another way to look at the Rivals numbers, Every CCJ recruting class was 50th or lower nationally exceept one. Every CPJ class is above 50 nationally except one.

Regardless both coaches have out performed their recuiting class ranking most years.

I was just looking at a list of CCG recruits, There are a lot of 2 stars, but I don’t recoginze many that are playing on Sunday.

Regarding CPJ’s 2 stars recruit. I was surprised to see Julian Burnett’s name lsited with 2 stars. 2nd team all ACC as a junior. Had he stayed healthy I assume he would be first team this year and would get some NFL looks. (Frankly I think our whole team would be much better if he had stayed healthy, but that is another story)
Among the current crop, I think that Adam Gotsis looks like he might develop into someone to be recconned with in the ACC.
