When Georgia Tech holds commencement exercises Saturday, 34 current and former athletes, managers and trainers will receive their degrees, including football players Emmanuel Dieke, David Sims and Rod Sweeting and former players Brad Jefferson and Jahi Word-Daniels.

Congrats to anyone who can graduate from college, especially an athlete with their schedules. I know UGA has some far fetching majors, but what the heck is Science, Technology and Culture? Not one Engineer in football, or any major sport, except a male cheerleader.

“Georgia Tech’s Science, Technology and Culture (STAC) Program is unique in its emphasis on communication skills, cultural interpretation, and textual analysis. Unlike similar programs, which look at science, technology, and the humanities as separate entities, STAC examines the modes of communication and understanding common to them all. As a result, students learn to master the range of methodologies of literary and cultural analysis needed to understand and interpret the “texts” ranging from novels and films to scientific journals and web pages that our society uses to communicate and to understand itself. We didn’t want to have to move our school to southeast Asia, which was becoming more and more practical. We also thought it might help the football team out a little too but so much for that. Really, another Sun Bowl? We give you some stupid major on ‘literary and cultural analysis’ (I can’t type that without laughing) and all you give us in return is another lousy Sun Bowl? …first , congratulations to all who are graduating from Tech this semester – you worked hard and that degree is something to be proud of, especially when earned while playing sports, too.
But, at the Dook game, they listed all of the band seniors and their majors, and I saw, Communications, History, Film (really), Psychology, and one other that I cannot recall but that made me go “hmmm”, just like Super did about “turf management”.
And Toadster (is that a real name), Ogletree, Rambo and Williams will probably not graduate at all, but they might do quite well making a nice salary for a few years in the “league”…not bad for “housing” majors…
And, turf management, is quite like landscape architecture, which Tech does not offer, but UGA does – and without the landscape architect to “beautify” those building you Tech guys design and build, those would be quite “plain” adn just monstrosities, so the collaboration is quite synergistic (is that a word) -

@ Uh…..I was at the Dook game too, but I didn’t pay any attention to that. However, in the list of Degree Programs at Tech, I don’t see anything about either Film or Communications. Yes, there is Psychology (also at UGA), and the History degree is actually “History, Technology, and Society”. There’s also one in “Science, Technology, and Culture.” I don’t have a clue what either of those are, but they are both Bachelor of Science degrees, so some basic science, technological, and mathematics courses are required. And yes, “synergistic” is a word, and it is applicable in the statement you made.

Most of the football players at UGA are taking home ec courses. Most schools don’t teach home ec anymore with all of the budget cuts so there are no jobs with this major. When these guys are broke in ten years from all of the child support payments and legal fees, that “education” isn’t going to help them too much.

I am happy for and proud of these students. I would love to see all of our student-athletes complete their respective degrees. I’m hoping we see some mens basketball players on this list in the not-too-distant future. We’ve not had too much academic success (as measured by graduation rates) among that team, but I’m encouraged by the guys on this year’s team. Hopefully the discipline they show on the court will also translate to the classroom. To ALL the Tech graduates (and UGA graduates too), I wish a hearty congratulations!

The following should resolve the questions/comments about GT marching band members major not showing up on the list of majors at GT. Through the Cross-Registration Program in the Georgia Board of Regents, students of other colleges and universities without similar music programs were allowed to march in Georgia Tech’s marching band. Students from Agnes Scott College, Atlanta College of Art, Clark Atlanta University, Clayton College & State University, Columbia Theological Seminary, Emory University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Institute of Paper Science & Technology, Interdenominational Theological Center, Kennesaw State University, Mercer University Atlanta, Morehouse College, Morehouse School of Medicine, Morris Brown College, Oglethorpe University, Southern Polytechnic State University, and Spelman College were able to march in Georgia Tech’s marching band after a successful audition process.
With the inauguration of the Georgia State Marching Band in 2010, the Marching Band no longer accepts any new wind or percussion cross-registration students. Students who had previously marched in the Georgia Tech Marching Band were allowed to continue, pending a successful audition process.

No. We beat # 4 Florida to Win The SEC East, whom South Carolina lost to in a blow-out. And, our Football Players Graduate at a far higher rate than Georgia Tech’s Football players, which is what this blog is about, that Georgia Tech of their entire team this season, graduated 2 football players 1 who plays a lot this season, and 1 who does not. And, that’s it for Graduation of Georgia Tech football players, along with the fact that Georgia Tech graduated no men’s and 1 women’s role player in basketball. These are your 2 money sports at Georgia Tech, and you continue to graduate at a 75 percent rate all the other sports, taking the same classes at the same time from the same professors for the same degrees.
It’s just that Georgia Tech, has not, cannot, and continues to not graduate your football players, while every other sport except for basketball, graduates from Georgia Tech.
What’s wrong with this picture for the # 36 documented US News and World Report national university in football graduation compared to the Federal Graduation Rate of your other sports, except for Basketball.

If you haven’t graduated from any college or university, you really shouldn’t be on here criticizing those who have accomplished so much in their young lives. A degree from GT is worth more than a degree from UGA. But, a college degree is worth more than a high school diploma or GED. These young people have put in the work both on the field and in the classroom, and I am extremely excited for them. By the way, GT is a member of the AAU, UGA isn’t. GT is ranked among the top colleges and universities in America, UGA isn’t. College eligibility is 4 years, the college degree is for life. Think before you type.

Re: Jarvis – I have no idea, though since he is majoring in “pro football” 101, and recently made All American for the 2nd year in a row, I would say he chose his major correctly, even if he did have to go to 2 different colleges to get that “degree”…

@Thomas Brown- Sweeting is a Starter, Sims is a co-starter, (was hurt earlier now starting), Dieke is a co-starter who rotates in and out with all the D-ends, Jefferson and Word-Daniels CAME BACK to finish their degree’s. Their eligiblity was used up over 2 years ago but they came back and this may not count toward the APR. Also, Washington and Uzzi graduated in the summer. This is the first year that all of Coach Johnson’s recruits will be eligible to graduate in the 4/5 year period, but it looks like some, Dieke made it in 3 1/2. Tech has a great program to help atheletes come back and finish many years later. Now matter the school, Tech, UGA, Aub etc, to graduate college is big accomplishment, the key is the GRADUATED and will hopefully use their respective degree’s to be valuable members of society and an inspiration to all.

Non-engineering degrees are at Tech are still Bachelor of Science. That means real math, real science, some knucklebusting Statistics and Accounting classes etc. Essentially, the easiest major at GT is a Top 25 nationally ranked Bachelor of Science Business Admin/Management degree. It’s certainly not like majoring in Aerospace Engineering, but I don’t know any other school that would call some equivalent (and highly ranked) as their “easiest” degree.
The other degrees added at Tech in the last 20 years are hardly basketweaving courses for Athletes (in fact, few athletes major in those newer non-engineering degrees).

Todd Gurley and Clemons… the following is calling you out on your false statement that Murray is working on a “dual” MS/PhD. Your words, not mine! Which I never believed anyway. This is also straight from a MB article on Murray & Georgie released today. __________________________________________________________________________________But he has also nearly exhausted his options academically. At the end of spring semester he will be well on his way to completing requirements for a masters degree in industrial psychology. He could pursue a doctorate, perhaps, or just piddle around with his final thesis.

Congrats to all of the student-athletes from both Tech and UGA. A college degree is an achievment no matter what the major is.
On a side note: I love the topic of graduation on the AJC blogs around this time of the year. These responses, from both sides, are so typical.
Why don’t you all just congratulate the student-athletes and keep your rude comments to yourself?? Show some class for a change. Unbelievable.

We UGA fans love to trash everything Tech on this site. We learned our technique from GTBob on the UGA site. He is such a sweet guy. That said, congratulations to all the Tech grads regardless of the major. Successfully completing a course of study is a worthy accomplishment. Good luck in the future.
