Updated notes: Tech fills 2013 schedule

1. Georgia Tech’s first-ever game against Alabama A&M will complete the Yellow Jackets’ 2013 schedule. Tech’s non-conference schedule will be comprised of home games with Alabama A&M, Elon and Georgia and a road game at BYU.

The FCS team will play Tech at Bobby Dodd Stadium Nov. 23, a week before the Jackets play Georgia. Since the FCS level (previously known as Division I-AA) was created in 1978, this will be the first time that Tech has played an FCS-level team the week before the Georgia game. The Jackets have typically played an ACC opponent.

After the ACC voted to return to an eight-game league schedule in October from the nine-game plan instituted with the expansion to 14 teams, Tech sought home-and-home dates for 2013-14 with schools in the Big Ten, Big East and Conference USA.

However, due to the lateness of the search and the glut of ACC teams looking for opponents, school officials couldn’t find a potential FBS partner with openings or willing to create openings for the Jackets.

Alabama A&M is a member of the Southwestern Athletic Conference, a league of historically black colleges and universities. The Bulldogs finished 7-4 this season, losing to Auburn 51-7 in its only game against an FBS opponent. Alabama A&M is coached by Anthony Jones, formerly a coach at Morehouse.

It will be the first time that Tech has scheduled two FCS-level opponents since 2008, coach Paul Johnson’s first season, when the Jackets played Jacksonville State and Gardner-Webb. The Gardner-Webb game was also a late addition, the result of Army canceling its game with Tech in Oct. 2007. Tech will be able to count only one win against Elon or Alabama A&M towards its bowl eligibility.

2. The Tech athletic department released a message on Twitter from coach Paul Johnson Tuesday thanking fans who attended the ACC Championship game in Charlotte.

“As we begin bowl preparations, I wanted to take a moment to thank you for your support in Charlotte this past weekend. We came up short in our quest for the ACC Championship, but our players and coaches were overwhelmed by the fans that made the trip. We were energized by the Tech faithful in the stands, especially in the second half. At the end of the game, we heard many words of encouragement. It was a great reminder of who and what we represent every time we take the field.”

3. Tech will begin practice for the Sun Bowl Thursday and continue with practices Thursday and Friday. … Tech was a 10-point underdog to Southern California as of Tuesday evening. … The Tech ticket office put Sun Bowl tickets on sale Monday. The school has an 8,000-ticket allotment which will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Tickets cost $50 and $60. … In the Tech media guide, a survey of team members revealed that five players named USC as the team they would most want to add to the schedule, including outside linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu. Ironically, 12 players chose Florida State, which the Jackets played in the ACC Championship game.

Elon and Alabama &M should sell some tickets next year. With FSU on the schedule, PJ is going to have a tough time keeping the bow streak alive unless he decides to use the forward pass next year. At least he won’t have Tevin dragging him down all year.

Wow. Tech buys Bammer A&M a victory.

Technically they can still win 6 and get in – they just have to win the right six, and that can’t include wins against both these schools.

Elon? Alabama A&M? Who wants to go to those games? Surely not GT fans. That will be part of the season ticket ‘package’ for 2013? Not worth it. Beating these teams does nothing for us. Losing to them (MTSU) has prolonged ramifications. No good can come out of scheduling teams like this. I have always said, scheduled low tier teams from other conferences to fill the spots. Indiana or Minnesota from the Big Ten, South Florida or Temple from the Big East, etc, etc. That way you get full credit with the win. Elon and A&M, we get 1/2 credit and no one wants to go see the games either!!!

The first sentence says AA&M is an FBS team. Why wouldn’t they count? I guess you meant FCS.

Tech might have had a down year this year, but they aren’t that bad for anyone to expect them to lose to an FCS team. Ken saying they need 7 wins doesn’t make him stupid, rather logical for expecting Tech to beat two FCS teams. Unless you really think Tech falls to an FCS opponent?

Remember 5 years ago when we were saying “We’ve got ourselves a football coach, boys!!!” PJ was talking tough, we beat the doggies, the offense set records for longest pass and run TD plays in school history, and we had NFL talent coming back for the next season. “We are playing for championships.” was what we heard.
Fast forward to today and we are hoping to win 7 games next year to keep a string of crappy bowl games alive, our tough talking coach just comes across sounding like a jerk, we will go 2 years in a row without a player drafted by the NFL, our AD up and quit to go to our 2nd biggest rival, our offense can’t score more than 17 pts against any team of substance, our defense set records for futility and we are hoping to pull off an upset in a bowl game nobody wants to go to just to finish .500.

How did it all go so bad so fast?

They scheduled Alabama A&M because Harrison High’s schedule was already locked in for 2013.

Why have Tech fans been bashing UGA scheduling the past 2 seasons when Tech is producing this (now 2 FCS schools in one year)?

Auburn Grad,

Tech was working on a home-and-home with GA State earlier this fall. Not sure if those talks hit a snag or if it’s still in the works.

We have a good home schedule if you take away Elon and Bama A&M. How much do you pay for season tickets??? When I buy my club seats, it is thousands of dollars! That is why I don’t like ELon and A&M as I probably won’t go and a big chunk of my money I pay goes to ALL games – not just 4 or 5.

Way, way back in February 2012 (a whole 10 months ago) the ACC announced that they were moving to a 9 game schedule in 2013 and so teams started cancelling OOC games. Now they are moving back to an 8 game schedule and the best GT could find was Alabama A&M?
Who did GT drop off the 2013 schedule in February and why can’t they get them back?

Black Out – we are bashing your conference schedule!!! You did NOT play Bama, LSU OR Texas A&M during the regular season. 3 of the best teams in your conference. You played 2 other good teams; USC who trounced you and UF who you beat only because they turned the ball over 6 times!

GTAA, please stop scheduling out of conference cupcakes!
Just like other conferences, we have enough cupcakes in conference.
Losing against a respectable OOC opponent will not hurt our chances for an ACC championship which is our goal every year..
I pay a lot of $$ for my tickets and I want to have a good time at the games.

AJC said recently (maybe yesterday) that the entire ACC conference was scrambling to fill out the schedule after conference went from 8 to 9 game conference schedule. I expect ridicule for what I am going to say. The difficulty of getting tougher competition on short notice, aside from the fact that a lot of other schools already had full schedules, says something to me. In spite of our less than stellar record this year, some of the teams that might have been available don’t want to take a chance on losing to GT because they just may see possible improvement & trouble in stopping our offense. They might be thinking why take the chance. Just food for thought.

And, 1 4 GT...
