Georgia Tech quoteboard

“I was awfully proud of the effort our guys gave. I thought they played with some heart and some intensity. And we just ran out of time. We had our chances, just didn’t finish enough drives in the first half and had to kick field goals, and they’re a good football team.”

Coach Paul Johnson

“You know, the team responded the way I thought they would respond. You know, this team really hasn’t ever quit. I mean, some people might want to say that, but they haven’t ever really quit. Now, have we been as consistent and played with the kind of emotion and energy every game? I’d be the first to say no and I think they would, too. But this team has been fairly resilient, and it did not surprise me at all that they came out and played hard. I knew they would.”

Johnson

“We were having a hard time getting the linebacker picked up. He was playing really deep and he was scraping out in the alley a lot. We didn’t always do a great job of blocking the other guys on the perimeter, either. We missed them several times.”

Johnson

“I thought if I would have made a better throw and put it on his outside, he would have had a chance to catch the ball and get up the field. I kind of left it inside and got undercut and they made a play on the ball.”

Quarterback Tevin Washington on the game-sealing interception, intended for A-back Robbie Godhigh

“I just broke on it and tried to tip it up and bat it down, but luckily it tipped up in the air and I just tried to make a sure catch and that’s what happened. I’m just happy I got the call and we’re ACC champs.”

Florida State safety Karlos Williams, who made the interception

“My confidence level was the same as it was when we started the game. I felt like we were going to go down and win the game.”

Washington on his confidence before Tech’s final drive

“We came real close. We told each other, we aren’t ever going to quit. That’s not us. We just kept fighting and we almost pulled it off.”

Safety Jemea Thomas

“We made some adjustments in the second half to stop the run. The adjustment worked, so we just played faster and had a lot more energy and intensity, that’s truly what it was.”

Thomas

“I wouldn’t say we gave the game away. I just think they made one more play than we did. Like I said, the biggest thing was when we got in the red zone, we got across the 30, we settled for field goals instead of touchdowns where they capitalized early on their red-zone chances.”

B-back David Sims

“I think (the game) was a testament to our team. Our season, really. We’ve been down, we were left for dead, but we kept fighting.”

Sims

“Second half, we felt like we had to just come out and step it up as a defense and put it on our back to come back and win this championship. Everybody believed that we were going to win the game.”

Outside linebacker Jeremiah Attaochu on team’s second-half rally

“That’s something to definitely build off. We have the ability. Our players can match up with anybody in this conference. It’s never been a doubt in my mind.”

Attaochu

CPJ had no idea if his team would play hard or not.He thinks TW is a big –time QB ,even with all these losses.

Last week “C”PJ said that Tech quit in the Georgia game and this week he says that they haven’t quit all year. He needs to go and quit sinking the ship. I wish someone would have asked Captain Ego why Tevin was in there at the end when he hasn’t had a successful drive when he was forced to pass in 3 years. We will lose 2 out of the first 3 next year since PJ got showed up by Vad in the UNC game and refused to play him much after that so he would be ready for next year. He could just not ever admit that Tevin was a bad choice to play and had 2 losing seasons in 3 years because of it.

Biff: Do yo really think that CPJ played Tevin rather than Vad because the latter player “showed him (Johnson up in the UNC game)? If so why? Many fans may not like Johnson for various reasons, but I don`t think any are for being stupid as your suggestion implies.

Ken: You do a great job or covering and reporting on GT. Please do not take my next comment the wrong way but I think its a slap at GT for the AJC not to provide some help to you in covering a championship game. I understand that the magnitude of the UGA championship game deserved a lot of hype and coverage. This does not take away the fact that we could have had more coverage if they had sent another reporter to assist your fine efforts. PS: It did not have to be Bradley or Shultz! Thanks again for all you do to keep us informed about the Jackets.

I second Stinger 1’s comments about the lack of attention given this game by the AJC.
1) We love Ken Suguira’s coverage of GT, including yesterday’s game.
2) UGA deserves all the attention they have gotten for being in (and nearly winning) the SEC championship.
That said, GT’s game deserved more overall coverage than the AJC gave it and that’s disappointing.

Very proud of the effort of the team in the second half. They didn’t quit and almost pulled off the upset. Though it was a loss, it was still an encouraging way to finish what has been an up-and-down season (to say the least). Go Jackets! and let’s get that bowl win!

Come on CPJ, don’t accept a bowl bid. Quit pouring salt into the open wounds. The only reason why you would accept is because of your stupid ego. You need to admit that your option doesn’t work against teams anymore. They know how to defend it, plus it leaves you no out when you are behind. You can’t pass the ball, you cannot have a good defense because how to you practice against a pro style offense. You need to go back to a div II team, you do not have the ability to coach in the big league. I’m, sorry for this but I’m tired of buying season tickets to watch a loser. On one thought, congrats to Georgia for putting up a great fight, at least you didn’t quit………

And these continual comments, week after week, from the team saying they weren’t going to quit. Well, if you give up 21 pts early – you aren’t going to win. Period. And while you were giving up those 21 points what were you doing if you weren’t ‘quitting’? Just playing awful, uninspired football?

I’m a season ticket holder so I’ve see every home game and a few of the away games. I choose not to purchase tickets to this game because I did not believe TECH had much chance of winning and did not want to just throw away money. I was very surprised as to the outcome so Congrats to the Coaches and the players. As a former coach of a football program I feel I know a little more than most who write here since I have see/done more than most, I believe that now you play Vad Lee. Your playing for next year totally. Vad is your future so he needs all the game experience he can get. Washington thank you for your service however you have lost every game that meant something so now it’s time to pass the ball to the next guy. I hate to knock a player but Washington you are just good enough to keep getting thrown back out there and bad enough to not be able to pull the game out when it counts the most. I’m sorry but that will be your MO at Tech. You and Reggie Ball. CPJ hopefully will now realize that the bowl game is really like a spring practice game and play Lee or who ever he thinks will play next year. Thank you players for making the game a good one. Defense you played your ass off Fla State is a very good team. Good luck in the bowl game. I won’t travel to it but I will watch it on TV.

Stinger 1 is dead on. I complained twice yesterday, once on the Shultz blog and the other complaint I was told by a uga fan to get off the blog because My team was a loser. I’m going over to see what nasty remarks the uga bloggers have on me now, but the whole day saw not one notice, not one picture, nothing about GT in a championship game. The only mention came in the late third qtr when it noted a fan had fallen at the game. Pitiful. There are two colleges in this state and the ajc is the state paper. Unbelievable!

We would have been ahead at the end if TW had made a netter pass to Bostic in the end zone on our second drive int eh second half. that was a TD. A Murray would have made that throw. I was surprised the CPK left TW in after that missed opportunity, but I give TW he made some plays on 4th down the rest of the game(except for last one of course).
Can anyone believe that that defense held might FSU to ZERO points in the second half.

Deja vu all over again. Looked like the VT game, the Miami game, the BYU game, any game we have played this season against better defenses. And what did Vad Lee do to tic Johnson off? We scored 68 with him atthe throttle against UNC. And he gets what, 2 series in this game.? Look I admire Tevin for hanging tough and giving it his all, but he should not have been in there at QB in the 4th qtr.

Ptjackets, u r right. Seems like the coaches are overly conservative in the defense as well. As a father of d 1 online man I watch the line play and the ineffective nose guard play when we read react has been obvious. Schedule wasn’t that tough? It was tighter than notre dames and they ranked first. You Johnson haters if they fire Johnson its a bad move. Yeswe had more losses than I wanted. But we competed and looked good in the second half. We are only a b back away from being able to win that fsu game. Everyone thought we would lay down (including ajc with game coverage given) we held seminoles screwless in second half. I think the system is fine we just need a defensive coordinator. people say we backed into the game. The other coastal teams did not have better records. Also Johnson ruins clean program both other programs had to vacate and still could not out right win coastal. Not like they were Ohio state at 12-0. I am proud of how the team looked in second half. Fsu looked like the team getting whipped. O leary and Chan never made them look like that.

Very disappointed that we didn’t see more of Vad yesterday. I don’t know if he would have been better than TW, but I am pretty sure that he gave us our only real chance to win. Facts are facts. TW is good enough to not lose most games for you, but he has proven over and over that he can’t win games. In order to beat teams like FSU, UGA, and Miami, that have more talent, we need to have our QB make plays.

TW has given this team his best, and represented the school well. Wouldn’t mind seeing both he and Roddy Jones come back as coaches sone day, but have to say I’m glad his time is up. I still may be one of the few that likes our offensive scheme. If we can ever get AND PLAY the right players, i think it will give us the best chance to succeed. Let’s hope CPJ gets an epiphany next year and realizes though that the scheme can only take you so far. You have to play the guys that can make plays, regardless of whether they are always the best at running the offense.

Stinger, if the AJC made more money it could afford to hire more writers (as it used to have). Instead, you’re commenting on a free blog and reading stories for free.

As far as Tech is concerned, it should be obvious by now that Johnson’s offense, while it may work against the lower-echelon defenses that Navy and Ga.Southern play, is not going to get it done against the superior athleticism that Tech has seen the past two games. Then again, with what Tech has to overcome recruiting-wise, maybe 7-5 or 8-4 in the ACC is the best it can hope for.

I’m just tired of watching this outdated football…..the only point of this offense is a guaranteed 8 wins a season because we all know it doesn’t work against teams with time to prepare (we will lose every bowl game with this offense) or big time talent (UGA)….if we can only win 6 (2010 and 2012) then we might as well have stuck with 7 win Chan….let’s just suck it up and try to hire O’Leary back

Still think this offense can work, even against the good, athletic teamswho have two or more weeks to prepare.but it requires an athletic QB who can throw enough to keep the Defenses honest. we haven’t had that in either Nesbit or TW. I’m still hopeful that Vad or the new kid, Thomas will be the one. just got to hope CPJ will see the light and play them.

How many years does it take for you all to realize Johnson will NOT see the light? He is stubborn and inflexible. If he were 10-2 or 11-1 every year – guess what – he has the right to be stubborn and inflexible. But he isn’t. 5 years is enough. You are seeing progress in these 5 years? 6-7 in the 5th year is progress to you all? Are you GT alum? Your IQ’s should be higher. You should be highly analytical and be able to determine this is not progress!!

Vad can’t do it all by himself. There does not appear to be enough athletes around him, particularly at wr. Time will tell, but the talent gap is widening.

they were blitzing from the start of the game, (not constantly, but occasionally) it’s just that FSU was picking it up. “more aggressive” sounds good in theory, but it also invites more big plays by the offense. that said, the defense in the first half was not good by any stretch.

Herbstreit said it best on the telecast last night. With the players Tech currently has, Johnson needs some threat throwing the ball to come back from a 2-3 TD deficit and that pass doesn’t need to be called only on 3rd and long. Now I don’t know if CPJ doesn’t have confidence in the passing game, thinks the players cannot execute it, or if he is just too dam stubborn to admit he can’t run over a good defense with his optioin attack. But even with Lee at QB, I think we’ll just see more of his grind it out approach next year. Didn’t see any dropped passes last nite on decent throws. But Tevin is just too erractic throwing the ball to be a real threat.
