Peterson: Tech ‘not going anywhere’

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Georgia Tech president G.P. “Bud” Peterson met reports and rumors about the school leaving the ACC for the Big Ten head on Saturday night.

“Not true. Not true,” Peterson said prior to the ACC Championship game. “We’re happy in the ACC. We’re staying.”

Internet and radio reports cited unnamed sources or repeated rumors that the school will follow Maryland out of the ACC and to the Big Ten, one reporting that the school will hold a news conference Monday to announce its departure.

“We’re not going anywhere,” said Peterson, speaking outside his suite at Bank of America Stadium.

It followed a Friday e-mail from school spokesman Matt Nagel that there was no truth to the rumors tying Tech and the Big Ten and acting athletic director Paul Griffin saying that Peterson had told him there had been no communication between him and the Big Ten and that he didn’t expect any.

In a Wednesday teleconference with news media, ACC commissioner John Swofford offered a similar tone, saying that the nature of conversations between him and Peterson in the past 10 days “has been emphatic in terms of their commitment to the ACC and Georgia Tech’s future.”

Bud would be a true idiot to turn down a Big Ten invite. The athletics and and the academic prestige of the Big Ten is far superior to the ACC not even to mention the added revenue. The only reason he would say this is because the Big Ten hasn’t invited GT.

Agree with Tomb. The only rational reason that GT is not jumping to the B1G is that the B1G did is not inviting them.

@Tomb, Tech is ranked 36th in national universities according to USNWR. There are 12 schools ahead of GT that have serious athletic programs. Of those 12, 5 are in the ACC. No other conference has more than 3 (PAC12). The ACC is the only conference (until Louisville joins) with every school routinely ranked in the top 100 (although NCSU dropped to 105ish this year).

Now, could we turn that extra 10 million per year into a top notch defensive coordinator and recruiting coordinator? Probably so. If we could land 20% of the top talent in GA, we’d be in the top 10.

I’m hoping for the B1G, but not for academics. I want the money to improve Athletics.

Very problematic statement from our Prez above.

The only way any GT fan can be happy in the ACC is if they don’t give a d@mn about CFB.

Going to the Big-10 would force GT to take FB seriously and get rid of a HC that has lost:

7 games

5 games

7 games

over the last 3 season with HIS OWN HAND-PICKED Recruits.

To lose 19 (friggin’ NINETEEN) games in yrs. 3-5 of your tenure is grounds for dismissal.

Any GT fan that thinks that Coach Pajamas (Coach PeeJay) should stay is delusional.

Oh, and on the Sam Olens post, he can say what he want, he’s entitled to his opinion, which is largely right in fact. But, how an elected official refers to 85 18-22 year olds that are getting an education at THE BEST school in the state and one of the best in the country an “embarrassment,” makes me wonder if he has the political savvy to run anything, including the local boy scout troop.

@WnE, I’m not ready to give up on CPJ yet. BUT, I will agree with you that we need to see the administration demonstrate some SERIOUS commitment to athletic EXCELLENCE. I have not seen any results in any program that would indicate such. That said, there have been some impressive facility builds lately, but how about bringing in some assistant coaches that have a demonstrated record of bringing in top talent.

WnE has been right and we have mocked him. GT doesn’t have the talent to compete game in and game out. We do have the talent to get some random upset from time to time. But with our current talent level, we CANNOT bring our C-game against anyone (like UGA did against UF) and walk out with a win. A 10 win team has at least one game that it should have lost but wins on talent (see Clemson vs. GT, USCe vs. Wofford, etc). The administration needs to open up the pocketbook this month to bring in not one but TWO OUTSTANDING recruiters – a couple of guys like Giff Smith, Lance Thompson, or Randy Gardner.

Tokyo Jacket: Thanks for the stats, this whole canard that the Big 10 beats the ACC in academics ticks me off. It’s nice to see the numbers back up what I already knew, ACC hands down in academics. Football… Well, pretty obviously that goes in the other direction.

Well Tokyo Jacket the Big Ten schools with the exception of Nebraska is ranked anywhere from 12 to 83. Most of the schools are ranked in the middle of that range. And the schools ranked ahead of Tech in the ACC are Duke, UVA,Wake, Boston College and UNC…not exactly athletic powerhouses.

Anyway my point was that Tech was a good fit for the Big Ten both in academics and athletics and because of the added revenue this was a no brainer. The Big Ten imo provides better stability for Tech in athletics and because Tech is such a great research institution the Big Ten is a good fit academically. It has less to do with how high a school is ranked by US News but how it will benefit Tech from a stability stand point. I mean already you have rumors that FSU and Clemson might leave, maybe Virginia Tech. I believe Tech need to be proactive here or they could be a big loser when the dust settles.

The other bonus besides the money will the the atmosphere come game day. The fan bases in the Big Ten are enormous, and the excitement that will come back to Grant Field should be worth it all. How many games have we sold out vs Wake, Duke, UVA or NC? The Big Ten has Michigan, Ohio State, Wisconsin and Iowa. These games will be sold out…no small matter to Tech, but for the fans the atmosphere will be great.

Recruiting should improve over night if Tech moves to the Big Ten. Finally Tech will be in an attractive conference that high school football players will be excited about. Would adding to the curriculum help at Tech…sure but we would also be able to recruit the mid west and northeast where it’s actually easier to find better educated athletes to fit Tech’s tougher entrance requirements. As far as having money for a good defensive coordinator, well that falls on our AD and how best he uses the alloted revenues. Even if Tech went 1-10 this year, Tech wouldn’t be in a position financially to fire their coach…just saying.

I’m sorry, I would hate Tech going to the Big 10. I can’t stand the ACC but a move to the Big 10 is not the answer for our CFB issues. Heck….what southern recruit worth a *%^$ would want to go play against that competition in that weather? Tech needs to move to the SEC or Big 12….or not move at all. We’d have more success recruiting the south region than a move to the Big 10 would allow……of course we need to get rid of CPJ for any recruiting at all to improve.

Being a BigTen Alum, I really cannot see the attraction of adding Tech into The Conference. GT is a very good Institution with capable athletics but geographically, I do NOT see a good Fit within the BigTen. There are schools within the BIG that travel extremely well (OSU,UM,UNL and PSU) but there are other schools that have fair weather fans that would rarely travel Minneapolis to State College, let alone down to Atlanta. The College Landscape WILL Be CHANGING (whether We like it or Not) but hopefully some sense/Order will rule The Day. The additions of Maryland and Rutgers Made Sense for the BigTen to expand their Footprint/Exposure. Way too much of a Cultural Difference between Northern/Southern Schools. Over time, Missouri will find joining the SEC was the Worst Decision they EVER Made……there just Isn’t Any Type of Connection. I have lived in many different areas of the Country and mixing of Cultures would NOT be good for College Athletics and Fan Support would NOT be there……it will Turn they Away.

Last night FSU supported the argument that the triple option/wish bone/etc. cannot work against a big boy Defense. CPJ would argue it does but he just doesn’t have the right parts yet. Eitherway, ugly as this season may have been at times, I would have to vote to keep the experiment going for at least another year. Poor defense was the reason we sucked this year and remeber we only retrned 3 starters on O and D. Next season will better tell us where we are and where we are going.

Move to BIG is a very interesting proposition, I prefer GT back in the SEC but will probably never happen. The ACC basketball attraction is now diminished (fewer games on Tobacco Rd) and one & done has ruined program building approach.

Boulder Buzz Peterson is a putz, cannot even deal effectively with crime on campus, more interested in global warming and teeth whitener. Totally out of his element making athletic decisions, UGA grads (w/ sentiments like Sam Olens) run the Board of Regents. Regarding the big joke, I mean B1G (please hold your applause). Last I checked, the SEC is the conference with six consecutive national titles and playing for a seventh. Ohio State has been the ONLY relevant team the last 10 years. Given all their violations, they are not even credible. The big joke is about as relevant as Conference USA. When it comes to football.

So, What Happened? The media placed all their eggs on Miami, FSU, and VaTech. When the other teams in the ACC caught up to their speed, all of a sudden the ACC became ‘irrelavant.’ Is this not the same as teams of the big Big Joke? Just last night… With Rose Bowl implications on the line, please explain how unranked Wisconson puts up 70 points on 12th ranked Nebraska in the Big Joke Championship… Like I said, Big Joke. the ONLY reason to leave for the Big Joke is for MONEY, like Maryland did.

As far as academics: GaTech, Duke, Wake Forrest, Va Tech… no need for me to go any further.

ACC is the way to go

December 2nd, 2012
10:47 am

The sky is not falling. Tech will be fine whether it stays in the ACC (my personal preference) or jumps to the B1G (not advised). I’m from and live in Big 10 country. Other than OSU in the last 10 years, the product they put on the field and court for the 3 sports I care about (football, basketball, baseball) is IMHO inferior overall to the product the ACC delivers. Even if Clemson and FSU jump ship, I will take:

BC, Duke, GT, Miami, UNC, NC State, UVA, Va Tech, Wake, Pitt, Syracuse, Louisville, U. of Cincinnati?, UConn?

Over…

Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Mich. St, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, OSU, Penn St., Purdue, Wisconsin, Maryland, Rutgers

Both the ACC and B10 have schools with great traditions. The money will follow IF either conference starts to win consistently. The key is getting good coaches. Look at Alabama’s records in the 10 years prior to Nick Saban – not so good.

I think we are done for a couple of years, then their may be some major change. DRAD said last year he wanted to be regional so travel costs would be lower and rivalries would flourish. I think he was referring to the SEC or staying ACC. GT would be center of SEC East with 3-4 hrs most games. ACC is an easy flight to everywhere. B10…not very convenient, neither is the B12. ACC is a much better fit academically, school sizes, and culturally. Clemson however would be a great fit in the SEC and now DRAD is there…so by Feb 5…Clemson is going to the SEC. SEC will not allow this to be announced until after signing day, so SEC can keep their recruiting advantage for this season vs Clemson. When Clemson leaves, GT is isolated….then the B10 becomes important.

I think this rumor was intentionally leaked to either spur some action or monitor reactions that would get things moving.

I, too, thought the headline meant GT was not going to a bowl. At 6-7, they shouldn’t! Bowls should be a reward for a good season. 6-7, or even 6-6 is NOT a good season. Had Miami not ’self penalized’ to escape some of the NCAA’s wrath, Tech wouldn’t have played in the also-ran ACC Champ game, anyway. Face it, Tech football is at an all time low. Coach Heisman would be ashamed.

Y’all could fight it out with Ky for low man on the totem pole rights and Vandy could clean your clock, along with the rest of the East, every year! Of course, you’d start every single season knowing that you had 6-7 losses guaranteed. It’d be a Dog fans’ dream come true!!!

We all know this would be about money.
GT sits in a great situation that we could remain in the ACC, use the BIG 10 to maybe have the SEC ask GT to join them to avoid the BIG 10 gaining a share of the Atlanta TV market.
I strongly oppose GT moving to the Big 10 because we would be selling out. GT has enough problems filling our own stadium and traveling to our opponent’s stadiums below the Mason Dixon and east of the Mississippi River. How and why would we consider never having home field advantage? GT would have about 1000 fans in places like Michigan, Ohio State, Michigan State, Iowa and Penn State which have 100,000+ seat stadiums? Then, to have them visit GT to occupy 30,000+ seats in our own 56,000 seat stadium at Bobby Dodd like UGA, Clemson, FSU and Virginia Tech already do. GT would never have an advantage of home field.
If this is the case, then why not tear down Bobby Dodd and just play all our home games at the Georgia Dome since it’s all about money????
Not to mention our nonrevenue sports which do not have the luxury of traveling by plane. These long trips on the road for our kids would increase the risk of injuries and fatalities. Tired kids driving through the night and falling asleep at the wheel? Think about it.
Plus, quite a few of these nonrevenue sports programs would be eliminated thus, eliminating the opportunity for talented kids to gain a quality education a be a productive member in our society.
And where does the $50 million come from for the buy out?

I think some of you don’t realize that travel costs wouldn’t be so bad in the B1G.

Atl is less than 7.5 hours drive to Columbus (tOSU) & Bloomington (IU)

College Park, Md (current ACC member, but not for long) is roughly the same distance as Ann Arbor, West Lafayette, Urbana Champaign & Chicago.

The Northeastern teams of the ACC are no closer than Minny, Iowa or Neb. Minny is a delta hub. Btw, Mpls is a beautiful city and quite underrated – one of the best metro economies in the US, historically speaking.. GT fans would also love Madison, Chicago, Ann Arbor, Columbus & Bloomington, esp between mid-Spring to mid-Autumn. Rutgers and Md also bring you quite close to D.C. and NYC – each being easy commutes for recreational tourism.

As for football, as bad as the B1G has been – they still have 12 BCS wins (2 vacated) and three of those wins have come against the ACC. Remember GT vs Iowa? We don’t need to post the ACC’s BCS record – miserable.

Five programs in the B1G, well 4 now, PSU is going to be hit hard the next 5 years, can make a deep NC run in any given season: Wisky, Neb, tOSU and Mi – only FSU in the ACC. I think Miami will ultimately face sanctions as damaging as PSU – they’re in deep shvt down there, have been for nearly a decade. Also, the B1G has brutal bowl tie-ins, very tough, but uplifting when they win & they don’t shy away from top competition. Translation, GT is far better off in the B1G, esp in terms of elevating a once proud program.

As for hoops, not much to argue here, esp women’s hoops. On the men’s side, the ACC and B1G are more equal than you think: same # of Final Fours, B1G has 2 less NC’s, and both are the only conferences with a .600 and above winning % in NCAA tourney play, all time. But the ACC is no longer the classic hoops conference with 8 or 9 teams & everyone has a conference tourney now. If GT can sustain success in hoops & join the B1G, they’ll actually have a better recruiting footprint. Tobacco Road, esp Duke and UNC, as well as Lville & Ky have often depended on Midwest and Northeast talent. Hoops talent will always be excellent in the Midwest – Northeast – it’s an indoor sport.

GT would be a great addition in the B1G and membership would revive GT’s football program. The proximity is better than you think, though not as compact as the ACC. Iif UVa is coming with you, then that’s 3 programs within a 7-8 hour drive.

Nevertheless, I wish tradition would be a bigger factor here. I like the ACC’s athletics (not football) & academics, though Lville screwed the pooch here. We’ll see what happens. Either way, GT will always be a fine academic institution, regardless of conference affiliation – that matters most : ).

Good luck!

FWIW! Supersize & I discussed this on the drive to Charlotte yesterday. While it probably would help with recruiting since most state educational systems in that part of the country do a better job than schools in the South, giving better educated kids the real chance of surviving at Tech. I seem to recall Tech used to recruit quite a few kids from Ohio & Pa and other northern/midwestern states and this would put us back in the mix for those kids again. Why Tech ever backed off a more national recruiting base has long puzzled me. Anyway, Supersize had a rather interesting thought on the subject. We would both rather Tech make an effort to get back in the SEC. I told him I think (I realize this may turn some of you off, but he had no problems with it) the Tech prez should go to the SEC schools kinda hat in hand & ask for readmittance into the SEC. Old, bitter resentments could be forgotten by now. Supersize had the thought that GT, FSU & Clemons get together & approach the Big 12 as a package deal. We both think that would be a better fit than the Big 10. Anyway, noone has knocked on my door soliciting my opinion on the matter. Unless the powers that be decide to make a move, it is all conjecture anyway. IMHO!

Here’s a novel idea lets worry about who our next AD will be and how soon he can get the entire coaching staff a one way ticket to who gives a Damn. We can not win big with a stubborn ass of a coach who will not change his way of thinking. And about his way of thinking, When was the last time somebody won with the offense he runs? Nebraska? Well times have changed since then you can’t win without some kind of passing game. And don’t even get me started on our defense. He is as agrogant as you get and simply thinks he can outscore everybody. Sorry this is not Georgia Southern, but if we don’t can him we soon could be.

But SEC’s allowing over-recruiting did not suit Bobby Dodd. He said, “I
want the boys to get an education. I’m not going to recruit ‘em on a trial basis, and then run ‘em off, like others do.” The football landscape has changed, now. Looks like Tech could work on getting back into the SEC – its natural home.

Academics is a factor in Slive;s thinking, Mizzou rather than one of the Oklahomas or West Virginia, for instance.

But NC State and Va, Tech wouldn’t offend the SEC academically.

Tech had one mediocre year after 15 straight bowl games, and people say we’re at an all-time low, that Tech football is on par with Duke? B.S. Duke has it’s first decent season in forever, but we still beat them, and Tech’s all-time low was Bill Lewis in the early 90’s.

Academics is a factor in Slive;s thinking,

No, it’s absolutely not, it is a sports conference that exists to put together a framework to maximize television revenue for its member schools. Academics has nothing to do with any of it.

Pretty funny watching GT struggle considering this all started 40+ years ago when they left the SEC for greed only!!! It has backfired for almost a half century,!,

@ Rick James- Agree that VT and NCSU would be the best and most logical ACC additions to the SEC if they decide to add 2 more. Whether or not they will, who knows? But I don’t see the SEC adding more teams from FL, GA and SC since they already have a deep footprint there. The NC and VA markets would be more desirable IMHO.

UNC is to me the only logical ACC choice for the B1G. John Swofford and Jim Delaney, ACC and B1G Commissioners, respectively, are both UNC guys. The Tar Heels fit the B1G cultural image better than that of the SEC, and as for UVA, the B1G would be better off with perhaps Kansas than the Cavaliers. Also, the legislative tie-in (that brought VT into the ACC) between VT and UVA could derail any move for either school unless they were a package deal.

GT to the B1G is laughable to me because if GT can’t get into the SEC, headquartered in Atlanta, why would a conference headquartered in Indianapolis want them? The Big Ten Network is already available nationally on DirecTv’s basic package anyway, and has been since its inception. The Big 12 is the most logical place for GT, FSU and Clemson to go if (and when) the ACC falls apart.

The only thing that will save the ACC is having 2 8-team football divisions split north-south. This would allow the 4 ACC schools to play each other again every season, plus would maintain rivalries with Clemson, GT and FSU. The former Big East schools would form the north division, and I’m assuming UConn would be added to make 8 teams (Notre Dame is included here). But Notre Dame in the ACC as a partial seriously jeapordizes the future of this league, because they are NOT going to ever give up their football independence. No way, at least not for the ACC.

All in all, GT to the B1G makes as much sense as GT fans wanting the Jackets to get a bowl bid this season. To me, when you finish the season under .500, it’s time to call it quits.

JUST SAYING, AFTER ALL THE LOSSES THAT GT HAS HAD TO UGA, THERE HAS ONLY BEEN ONE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP SINCE 1990 AND THAT TROPHY HAS GEORGIA TECH’S NAME ON IT. UGA, YOU STILL HAVE TO LOOK UP TO US BECAUSE WE STILL SIT ON TOP OF THAT MOUNTAIN. IF I COULD JUST GET THIS THROUGH THE HEADS OF MY BOYS ON THE FLATS WE CAN GET THIS THING TURNED AROUND. IN THE MEANTIME UGA FOLKS, MY DARLING DAUGHTER SAYS IT BEST. SSHHH!!!

Don’t envision many GT fans traveling to see them play.
With the number of Big 10 alums in the Atlanta area, they’ll outnumber GT fans at Bobby Dodd.

Even though it won’t happen, I truly wish GT could rejoin the SEC.

Surely you jest. You play in one of the weaker conferences in the NCAA, annually get beat most of the time by UGA, and to top it off. the SEC east teams annually beat the snot out of your teams as well. I think the battle cry for the tech. team should be, “WAIVER ON”.
As for why the GT team can’t go to the big 10, even if invited, people, think a minute here. They were one of the teams that voted to raise the ACC exit fee to 50 million bucks. Where will the GT athletic department get that kind of money. They are having trouble enough, just having to pay the former BB coaches exit salary, and it was nowhere near 50 million. Adding a team like Notre Dame to your conference, even if it is only for football, will prove to be a stupid move on the ACC’s part. They will most ;likely dominate you conference, unless it has negative impact on recruiting for Notre Dame. All this move does is to insure that Notre Dame will be in a bowl game of some sort every year, and it will not be because they need a waiver to go to a Sun Bowl.

GT in the Big Ten is absurd from a cultural standpoint. The Big Ten is comprised of enormous factory like state schools filled largely with mediocre in state students and located in rust belt locations with horrible weather. The ACC has an incredible, unique, interesting and varied group of academic powerhouses in Boston College, Duke, Wake Forest, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Virginia and North Carolina. The Big Ten has Michigan and Northwestern. And you want to leave that crowd to play football in dumps like East Lansing, Michigan and Iowa City? The ACC is the best overall conference in the country. It just needs to focus on football and make some adjustments and investments.
