NCAA statement on Tech bowl waiver

The NCAA released a statement Friday acknowledging that Georgia Tech has been granted its bowl-eligibility waiver. It clears the Yellow Jackets to play in a bowl game even if they lose to Florida State Saturday in the ACC title game in Charlotte, N.C. The news was broken Thursday night by

The statement:

“After reviewing the request from Georgia Tech, the NCAA staff granted the waiver based on the totality of circumstances. The waiver allows Georgia Tech to be considered for selection along with the other bowl-eligible teams.  In consideration of the waiver request, staff noted that Georgia Tech finished the regular season with a 6-6 record, which would make the team bowl-eligible before being obligated to play in the conference championship game. This decision is consistent with the waiver provided to UCLA last year under similar conditions.”

Now that this is settled,Tech badly needs a win in at least one of these next two. Ending 6-8 will further some embarrising times for us this year. A lost Saturday against the Noles would likely land us back in the Sun Bowl with Southern Cal as a possible opponent. The good news is that Vad will start next year with some big time experience under his belt against quality opponents. GO JACKETS – lets end well.

I’m more interested at this point whether Smith and Finch will play, which would greatly increase any chance Tech has of a winning record and BCS game. Any further word ?

Good news……as expected.

This proves the various DAWG fans who have been stating they have inside knowledge that GT will not get the waiver absolutely wrong. These immature punks consistently try to spin everything negative with regard to GT. They should grow up and we should continue to ignore them.

The most important factor is that GT benefits from additional practice time to prepare for the bowl game!

If GT finds a way to beat FSU……..we play in the ORANGE BOWL!! Who would have “thunk” it was even possible just a few weeks ago?

If you want a good picture of how irrelevant Tech is right now, and how inconsequential Tech is in its own home town, all you have to do is peruse the pages of the AJC. Gallons of ink are committed to UGA, but nothing of note for Tech. The AJC even has a dedicated UGA recruiting correspondent. It all starts with winning, folks. When (and if) Tech ever finds the formula and will to win again, maybe, just maybe, the AJC’s coverage of Tech will improve. Oh, and ROLL TIDE!

Last year on these blogs, there was much talk about Lee being the new QB and how Tech was to
have a great season.

How about repeating all that…I’m beginning to become discouraged. Best news about a waiver is …no news….just win and not need one!

per the CLT guys, there are about 20% uptown hotels available and 50% not uptown available…and they are expecting a large crowd of Tech fans!

The AJC has never done right by GA Tech. It has always been a ugag rag….. and this has been true now for at least 30 years that I can recall.

I even remember at least once in the 1980s where the Tech student body boycotted the AJC and held a bonfire with its newspapers!

Tek gets the waiver but it remains to be seen if any bowl is foolish enough to invite a team with more losses than wins – a team that might have 500 folks travel to the bowl – a team that no one in the country cares about watching (stylized offense and all) get kicked around yet again. Techies – LMAO

That is some embarrassing stuff, and with our recent bowl streak, having a possibility of the team ending the season with a bowl and a worse case 6-8 record is not good. A 7-6 team in a BCS bowl is funny too. Maybe we can be the BCS busters at least. That would have to be the game to scream about for a team outside looking in with only a loss or 2. I am glad the players get to play, but there is nothing special about being the 3rd place representative of our half of the conference on Saturday. CPJ has brought us to new lows.

TechAppFan: Yeah, last year, esp. after the UGA game when Tevin went 3-10 with 2 INTs, we all thought we wouldn’t have to endure any more Tevin pain. Wrong. We just wasted the entire 2012 campaign on Tevin Washington.

CPJ’s personnel decisions are baffling at best. Obviously, Vad is the only d1 qb on the roster and should have started game 1. But let’s just go with the CPJ apologists’ argument that Vad wasn’t ready to execute at the level Tevin does. Well, after the Maryland game CPJ said both QBs “can now run the same stuff”. Well, with Vad’s superior arm and athleticism, you’d think the job would be Vad’s, at least after the Maryland game. Wrong again.

You’d think after the best QB performance of the CPJ era vs. UNC, Vad would have earned the starting job. Wrong again.

Get ready for 2 more wasted games on Tevin. Let the embarrassment continue.

I look at FSU as the bowl game. Leave it all on the field guys. No matter what I’ll still root for you to win.

AND if any Tech player gets slammed to the ground someone needs to reciprocate against FSU! I don’t care if you get thrown out of the game, just do it! FSU will deploy the same tactics as UGA. Don’t let the bullies intimidate you.

Please hit Emanuel so hard he’ll remember it the whole game. I’m talking to the defense. Attachou and Nealy specifically. Go get it Jackets!

In 2009 Notre Dame finished the season at 6-6 making them bowl eligible. They declined any bowl invitations.
From Yahoo sports..” the team didn’t want to go to a low level bowl game, and decided as a school that they didn’t think that their team deserved to go on a “vacation” to the possible bowl game that might invite them.”
If they have any pride, Tech might consider doing the same, just as UGA should have stayed home instead of getting embarrased but UCF. Think about it. What does Tech have to gain. If they beat a nobody, then everyone says it was expected. If they lose, then.. well just ask any DAWG fan what it feels like STILL having to explain the UCF loss. I know I would just as soon forget it.

@Texas Dawg – You asked, “what do they have to gain?” Well, it has been laid out over and over again. It seems that only the idiot ugag posters here seem to just not get it…

1. Extra practice (almost a month). We lost Washington, starting quarterback, to graduation and it’d be great to get Lee more reps.
2. Extra game. The bowl game would be more experience for our returning players.
3. TV exposure. Any exposure is better than none and GA Tech isn’t the ‘name brand’ that Notre Dame is nationally.
4. Extension of bowl streak. GA Tech now has the 4th longest bowl streak in the nation.

Can you and the other sad ugag fans understand? Did I type it slowly enough for you?

By the way, it wasn’t that long ago that ugag played in a little bowl in Shreveport – did you petition ugag NOT to go to that one?

Toadster, appropriate name. The Toilet Bowl would be more appropriate at GT stadium, is the bowl half empty or half full in the high crime area of Atlanta? I don’t think David Pollack, David Greene, the Stinchcomb brothers, Des Williams, Buck Belue, Herschel Walker or any of the MANY former players in the NFL know about your “documentation.” Jealously reigns supreme! We RUN this state! How many GT grads have been governor or brought the Olympics to ATL?! Enjoy picking your seats in your little stadium next year which will be at least half empty, hahaha!

We haven’t upset anybody this year. Except the upset stomach you get from watching this team. When the defense fell apart in the fourth quarter against Miami, that was the beginning of a dismal season. This team should not go to a bowl game. Johnson and CO. need to be out on the road trying to steal recruits from Auburn. The recruiting stinks and it shows.

November 30th, 2012
11:42 pm

As a matter of fact I was against them going. Nothing to gain, everything to lose (see we still have to defend that debacle). I guess in Tech’s case it is just the opposite. Everything to gain nothing to lose. Thanks for showing your intellectual level by turning a serious question into a fit of rage like a little kid. UGAG? GROW UP! What if you lose a starter to a serious injury in an absolutely meaningless game. Are you going to get the star recruit by being on TV in the Idaho Potato Bowl? No if you pull of a miracle and upset FSU (highly unlikely, then that is a differnet story because the MONEY (it’s always about the money) makes it worth it unlike the Idaho Potato Bowl. What are does it mean to win a meaningless bowl. In a lot of cases in the bottom of the ladder bowls, the school actually winds up with a deficit because of ticket guarantees. Are Tech fans going to travel out of the area in any great number to watch a 6-7 team play a 6-6. No! If you win, what happens, you move up from number 75 in the country to numbeer 63? Use your brain and not your emotions.

Wow, you insects are an emotional bunch. Who ever said engineers had no personality?
To answer you question, I have a lot a friends and family who went to GT and several who played there. With them I could always sit down and have a spirited but adult discourse about all things UGA and GT. I like to see Tech do well because of those family and friends except when they play UGA (during the UGA/GT game the gloves come off on both sides). I can see that can not happen here because once someone can hide behind a computer keyboard they can get all puffed up and will say things they never would face to face with someone. You have a lot of GT posters on here that don’t care one bit for UGA but read there post above and you will see that they are sickened by this season and many want it to end now before further embarassment.

@ TEXAS DAWG……that is the nature of the blogs, and if you believe most of the ones wanting to end the season are actually Tech fans, then I have some swamp land in S Ga to sell you. Sure, no Tech fan is happy with the way this season played out, but we have a chance to salvage it and make a statement. Anybody not wanting to take that chance is a damn fool or a dawg troll.

I’ll take some of that swamp land (already own some in South Georgia), cypress timber brings a good price these days. As I said, I have plenty of friends and family who are GT alumni. It is about a 50/50 split on wanting the season to end if you don’t win on Saturday. A trip to Miami, sure, what fool would not want to take that (Lived in Miami for a while great place for a short period of time). Great party town and a HUGE BCS paycheck. A 4th or 5th tier bowl in the middle of nowhere with nothing to gain-that is a whole different story.

If they lose, where do they go?? I looked at several of the wire services bowl projections, and the only one that even mentioned GT was the College Football News (see below). Most bowls have an out clause from their automatic conference tie in if a team falls below a certain threshold (unless they win the conference). I’ve passed through El Paso this spring, it is not a place I would want to spend my Holiday break.

I went to El Paso last year. It was a great place to visit. Don’t want to go back there this year, but not because of any problem with El Paso. And Tech already got the waiver. Other possible bowls, depending on mutual agreements are Music City Bowl (my personal preference) and whatever they call the one in Charlotte. Besides we COULD beat FSU tomorrow night and go to the Orange Bowl. That’s not expected to happen, but stranger things HAVE happened. Hell, UGA might beat Bama tomorrow afternoon, but it’s not likely.

December 1st, 2012

I like UGA’s chances better than GT’s, but I will be pulling for the home state teams (I’m not a Tech hater, just a Gator Hater, and Auburn when they get a team again). FSU is good for laying an egg when they should win (see NC STATE) but that is why they play the game. In ‘96 #3 Nebraska lost to an unraked Texas team in the Big 12 championship so anything can happen provided your defense shows up.
