Ankle sprain for Udofia

Georgia Tech guard Mfon Udofia sprained his ankle in Wednesday night’s 75-62 loss to Illinois in Champaign, Ill. It is not believed to be serious. Tech’s next game is Tuesday against Georgia at McCamish Pavilion.

Udofia suffered the injury with about 3:30 remaining in the game. He was replaced by Pierre Jordan.

In the game, Tech led by as many as six points in the first half and as many as four in the second half against the undefeated Illini. However, a 10-0 run starting with 6:26 remaining in the game vaulted Illinois from a 58-54 deficit to a 64-58 lead and put the Yellow Jackets away over the final four minutes of the game.

Tech was outrebounded 36-30 and allowed the hot-shooting Illini to shoot 47.4 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range. Tech shot 44.2 percent from the field. Forward Kammeon Holsey led the team in scoring with 14 points off the bench.

I really like the way the Jackets are playing this year, especially on defense. Daniel Miller had the annoncers raving about his “D” last night. The offense was crisp and assertive until the last 8 minutes when it became tenative against the zone. It sure is nice to have some depth this year. GT is probably a year away but the showing against St. Mary’s and Illinois on the road is encouraging. CBG can flat-out coach.

Realistically, I don’t think Tech’s quite ready to make a run to the NCAA tournament this year but is anyone else enjoying watching this team play more than some of Hewitt’s star-laden teams that would squeak into the tournament with a below .500 conference record and lose in the first round? This year’s team may not win enough games to be selected but it’s refreshing after years of disorganized basketball to actually see a squad with a plan. It may not always work out but you can see what they are trying to do on both sides of the court. With Hewitt’s teams it was like watching a pickup game made up of a bunch of guys that don’t really know each other.

For ANY team – ANY – to go on a 21-4 run to end the game – is a travesty and a sad indication as to where our basketball program is and how far it has fallen.

I hate to say it but TECH needs Hewitt back. When he was coach I could go to bed at a reasonable time cause the outcomes were predictable. Not with Gregory, I wanted to turn in no later than 10:30 but due to the way the team was hustling I watch the whole stinking game. That makes getting up at 4 tough!!!
