Updated Tech bowl scenarios II

If Georgia Tech is unable to pull the upset in the ACC Championship game against Florida State, it appears more than ever that the Yellow Jackets would head for the Sun Bowl. With a win, of course, Tech would go to the Orange Bowl.

In the event of a loss, Saturday’s results make it more likely that the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas, would be Tech’s destination. Clemson’s loss to South Carolina Saturday dropped the Tigers to No. 14 in the BCS standings, so they’re still eligible for an at-large bid, but with two losses and their Orange Bowl showing last year, it doesn’t seem likely.

That would make Clemson the automatic pick for the Chick-fil-A Bowl. The Russell Athletic Bowl, which has second pick in the ACC bowl selection order after the BCS bowls, can choose between Georgia Tech, Virginia Tech and N.C. State.

N.C. State just fired coach Tom O’Brien, so I’m guessing this isn’t a fan base ready to celebrate anything. If the Yellow Jackets are available, it will mean they’ll have lost two games in a row, one by a wide margin, and have fallen to 6-7. Tech will have a better league record than the Hokies (5-3 to 4-4), but Virginia Tech will have won its last two games, have a non-losing record (6-6) and a win over the Jackets. Further, Virginia Tech has never been to the Russell Athletics Bowl.

As I noted in a post last week, having a winning record (or at least not a losing record) is not a small matter of importance to the Russell Athletic Bowl folks. The bowl, formerly the Champs Sports Bowl, is used to getting eight- or nine-win teams.

Prior to the Georgia game, Citrus Bowl Sports CEO Steve Hogan said that “I think the Georgia game is a big game just because of that, because of the overall winning record.”

One or the other will go to Orlando, I think. That would leave Tech at the Sun Bowl, its destination last year. The Sun Bowl is required to take the ACC title-game runner-up if it’s available. Two ESPN projections pair Tech up with Southern California.

I’ve read that Tech would not be bowl eligible at 6-7 and that the waiver that UCLA received last year will not be granted. BCS guru Jerry Palm tweeted it, for instance. I don’t believe that to be the case, largely because, as I’ve written, Tech, ACC and bowl officials all expect the waiver to be granted. The other reason is that the NCAA process instituted that addresses 6-7 teams that lose their championship game was put in place for a situation in which there weren’t enough bowl-eligible teams.

As I understand it, because there are enough bowl-eligible teams, there isn’t a need to use the protocol that could potentially keep Tech out. It’s conceivable that the waiver could be denied, but on a teleconference Sunday night, coach Paul Johnson said that acting athletic director Paul Griffin told him that Tech will go to a bowl.

One other thing: Should Tech pull the upset, it’s likely Orange Bowl opponent will be the Big East champion, either Rutgers or Louisville. The two teams play Thursday night to decide the title. There’s also a possibility that Kent State, which hasn’t played in a bowl game since 1972 but is playing against Northern Illinois for the MAC title, could make it the Orange Bowl.

Looking forward to the Jackets playing football. Always cheering for the white and gold.

Other programs have no idea what it takes to succeed at Ga Tech. Few fans of the other programs would be willing to stay true to their school. I’ve had people tell me they would cheer for someone else if the positions were switched. Ga Tech fans are a long suffering bunch.

Actually Ken, because there are enough eligible teams to fill all of the bowl slots, Tech will not get a bid if they lose to FSU.

Can they opt out of the Championship Game?

Been a Georgia Tech fan for a long time, but after this weekend’s beatdown I hope that the NCAA does not grant the Jackets a bowl waiver. They simply do not deserve to go anywhere. Neither does rancid Virginia Tech.

You think it would be much better for our kids to take away the extra practice time and the bowl game experience? We stunk it up against UGA again. Get over it. Time to move on.

Like CPJ has said before, a bowl game gives the team extra practices and another game. Look at it as prep for next year. CPJ better come up with a big name DC. There’s no way that GT can play as bad against FSU as they did against UGA. They win this one.

I think Tech has a real chance against FSU. Tech’s game against Georgia was over early, but FSU — playing a game it really thought it would win (as opposed to Tech) — had a physical four quarters against Florida and was beaten up pretty well. Now the ‘Noles are playing a team they really expect to beat, so a big letdown could be in store.

Posters here saying negative things about GA Tech are “posers”.

Ugag will lose to Alabama in a big way – count on it. The Tide is out to prove a point after having one loss this season. The puppies will be cryin’ out loud.

GA Tech does need to get a defense. CPJ offense does work and I am a big believer. But, no offense really works without a defense – and we have no defense at all.

I hope that the GA Tech recruiters are out in a big way trying to get the biggest, strongest, meanest defensive high school players and Junior College players possible!

Nothing like a journalist who speaks his mind in the first sentence of his story rather than the facts of what will happen if Tech wins. El Paso is a fine place I understand Ken, but I hope your editors will still send you to Ft. Lauderdale for Tech’s sake. That would mean Ken, that Tech is in the Orange Bowl. Nothing like playing the game before it is over.

I was on hand in athens saturday and I must say this they had a ton of recruits there, On the billboard they even had a little commerical that said commit to Georgia! So sitting in the stands I heard they were really happy to have gotten a commitment. They told this prospect they were going to go ahead and give him his entrance exam and asked him in front of the entire stadium what is 4+4 when the recruit said 8 the stadium erupted into the chant give him one more try! So thats how much attention we really pay to you all. Second its going to be funny when we go to a BCS Bowl and you go elsewhere! Oh by the way talk up the junk right now because those big players you have and yes ill admit there good are going to be playing on Sunday next year!

@GTBob – Yes, Tech moved the ball on UGA. So did GA Southern. Didnt help them much either. Both teams scored a grand total of 10 pts combined before UGA put in the backups. Yardage without points is a serious issue. it says you cant make the big plays when you need them to put points on the board. Its as bad as going 3 and out.

Our efforts should be spent instead on finding a new head football coach — something I have said since 2010 when it was clear that Paul Johnson’s triple option offensive scheme had taken us as far as it could meanwhile Paul Johnson insisted on continuing to run it over and over again. Also, he doesn’t get it about the rivalry with UGA.

Georgia Tech gave up way to many points this season;
42, 49, 47, 41, 50 and 42 in 6 games.

Lousy players, lousy coaches or both. And if it is lousy players that
is a reflection of lousy recruiting by the coaches.

That said Tech has a record since 1960 of 332 – 270 – 10. That is 26 games over .500 for the 52 year period. So this year’s 6 – 6 record is about as usual.
