Tech applies for bowl-eligibility waiver

Georgia Tech believes it’s going to a bowl game. Other parts of the college football world are less confident.

In one more chapter in the strange saga that has been the Yellow Jackets season, the school faces the possibility of playing in the ACC Championship game with the most disparate of outcomes – beat Florida State and go to the Orange Bowl or lose and stay home. This scenario is far from a certainty, but is not out of the question, either.

Tech has petitioned the NCAA for a bowl-eligibility waiver in the event that it loses to the Seminoles to fall to 6-7, which would drop the Yellow Jackets below the .500 standard necessary to go to a bowl game. School, ACC and bowl officials have been confident that the NCAA will grant the waiver.

“We have full confidence that, at the end of the day, we’re going to be playing in a bowl game among the ACC selections between Dec. 27 and the first of January,” acting athletic director Paul Griffin said, “and we’re doing everything we can to be prepared to play the first of January at the Orange Bowl. Beyond that, everything else is secondary.”

Tech could receive an answer from the NCAA prior to Saturday’s game against the Seminoles. Reports have suggested pushback against Tech being granted the waiver.

Monday, NCAA spokesman Christopher Radford debunked reported claims that Tech has no chance at bowl eligibility if it loses to FSU.

“I’ve seen a couple reports out there (stating) that it’s already been decided, that they will not be eligible for a waiver, and that’s not accurate,” he said. “There has been no decision or official movement either way at this point.”

Tech’s petition will go before the concisely-named NCAA Division I Legislative Council Subcommitee for Legislative Relief. The waiver request likely makes Tech’s case on why it is deserving of eligibility. Radford said his recollection of UCLA’s petition included the argument that it was only playing in the Pac-12 Championship game, and thus putting itself at risk to fall below .500, because USC was ineligible. Tech could make the same contention, as Miami’s self-imposed postseason ban enabled the Yellow Jackets to play for the ACC title.

Tech could also offer up UCLA as a precedent case and offer the line of logic that it shouldn’t be penalized for playing in a championship game. The argument against is that there are a sufficient number of bowl-eligible teams and that one of them shouldn’t be denied a bowl spot in favor of a team that requires a waiver to be considered.

How Tech’s petition will be received by the NCAA is uncertain.

“I quit trying to guess the NCAA years ago,” Football Bowl Association executive director Wright Waters said. “If I could figure out the NCAA, I would go buy lottery tickets.”

The Tech team is proceeding with the understanding that it will be playing in a bowl game regardless, either the Orange Bowl with a victory or most likely the Sun Bowl with a loss, as the Chick-fil-A and Russell Athletic bowls would almost certainly bypass Tech at 6-7. The Sun Bowl, where Tech played last December, is contractually obligated to invite the ACC runner-up if it’s available.

“We’ll worry about (not receiving the waiver) if that happens, I guess,” coach Paul Johnson said Monday. “I just go off what our athletic director tells me. He’s usually a better source than reporters.”

Griffin said that Tech would be willing to drop down past the Sun Bowl if it made sense for all involved parties. Given that the Jackets just went to El Paso, Texas, Sun Bowl officials probably wouldn’t protest such a maneuvering around ACC bylaws. Discussions on the matter have only been internal to this point.

The Jackets, of course, can skip the waiver rigmarole easily.

Said Griffin, “We’re planning to go to the Orange Bowl.”

Danny Hall would be torn if Tech plays Kent State. ABC might move that game to Hulu and show a repeat of Modern Family instead.

As a long-time GA Tech fan I always root for the white and gold, but with a record of 6-7 I think it’s best that they stay home this bowl season.

Let’s see:

Finish the season 6-6 but you don’t qualify to play in the ACC Championship game. You get a bowl game.

Finish the season 6-6 but you play for the ACC Championship and lose. You don’t get a bowl game because you got to play one more game than everyone else for the Championship, lost, which technically gave you a losing record.

For cryin’ out loud folks!!! Base bowl games on regular season records and equal number of games played for all teams.

Is it REALLY that difficult to figure out??!!? This is getting really stupid.

Orange bowl or nothing. I say nothing. Tech doesn’t deserve a bowl at 6-7. Fire Paul Johnson and start over. The cupboard is bare.

I’ve had enough. CPJ has to go. Enough off the sideshow. Run a wishbone (Pepper Rodgers style) or don’t. Enough of the CPJ arrogance…IF he could recruit capable athletes, this offense MIGHT just work (70’s & 80’s Oklahoma or Nebraska anyone??)…but no matter what, without a defense and special teams, WE CAN NOT WIN.

Let’s face it. Tech’s academic requirements prevent the average UGA, ‘Bama, Florida or LSU recruit from committing to GT. Dodd, Ross and O’Leary all made it work…somehow, some way we have to find that special Coach/Recruiter/Leader again…otherwise, let’s just join the Ivy League and drop all athletic scholarships.

WHY apply for the Bowl Waiver IF you are confident in your ability to WIN THE GAME?

CPJ is supposed to have so much swagger and confidence in “his system”, yet he is already making plans to LOSE.

If I were Prez Peterson, I’d say the hell you will apply for a waiver, “go and WIN the effin’ game”!

Earn your bowl bid that way!

CPJ is already SCAMMING the GTAA out of $2.6MM per yr. and how he’s using shady loopholes to qualify for bonuses that he doesn’t deserve w/o special gimmicky rules from the NCAA (i.e. bowl waivers).

CPJ should be ASHAMED for sinking to the level of seeking out CFB’s version of WELFARE, to get into a bowl by applying for a special waiver.

Why won’t CPJ just come out and say,”to heck with waivers, we’ll get our Bowl by beating FSU”?

I guess all you CPJ BLTs realize that he’s not the man you thought he was, and that you are now officially worshiping a greedy, cowardly, weasel.

@Realist: The whole “academic standards” argument is a bold face lie and you know it. Think about it for two seconds, Chan Gailey was able to recruit an extremely athletic team, he couldn’t coach for crap, but he had talented athletes that could compete with anyone. In addition to list you named, Gailey actually put together a much more competitive program than CPJ. The only ACC (Almost Competitive Conference) championship he won, he did with Gailey’s recruits and ended up getting it stripped because your whole athletic department adds up to one ginormous moron!!

All I gotta say as a Dawg fan is, when will his contract extension be finalized!!

If the team is not good enough to have a winning record, why should NCAA grant them a waiver? A losing record and a history of no fan support are two good reasons they should stay home. It is sad to see Tech football fall to such lows! You are like the panhandlers dowtown – BEG TECH BEG!

GT should not play in a bowl game if they have a losing record. They are asking for what amounts to charity to do so. They would be taking the spot that a non-losing team would get if they have to play by means of a waiver. The argument that they
would be 6-6 and eligible if they did not have to play in the ACCCG is very weak. If they just happen to get extremely lucky and win against Florida State and have a 7-6 record, they will be some sad faces among Orange Bowl officials.

With all of the “well wishing” fans from UGA here, wishing the Jackets luck this weekend, the same to you; I really hope the Bulldogs beat Bama and then the Irish to bring the Championship home.

To those who feel the need to belittle our team, I say to you that it would be poetic justice for the Jackets to win the ACCC Championship and go to the Orange Bowl and for Georgia to lose to Bama in the SEC Championship and to drop out of a BCS Bowl altogether.

GA beat GA Tech LAST weekend. Give it a rest and grow up. I can promise you BOTH teams have forgotten all about the game and are preparing for their NEXT opponents. If these TEENAGERS can do it, surely YOU can, can’t you?

Dawg fans have no “dwag” in this fight and should simply waddle back to their doghouse with their tail between their legs, particularly after they lose to Bama this weekend. If the shoe were on the other foot, you know that UGA would want the extra practice and revenue of a bowl game.

When i saw ‘waiver’, I assumed we had the good sense and CLASS to get a waiver FROM going to a bowl – any bowl. Even if we SNEAK into the Orange Bowl (not gonna happen), I’d suggest avoiding further embarrassment and simply not go. Let someone else go.
But NO! These clowns with a less than even average record WANT to go to a bowl.
Sure, the kids want to go. Sure, the school wants the money. But for heaven’s sake, get some class, some sense, some honor.
You don’t have to be another Obama, getting and accepting a prize unearned or take money/services from the government unearned, or just become another moocher like about 52 million dishonorable, mooching American voters.
Earn it and go; fail and stay home. Stay home, Jackets, stay home.

If that team, that coach, that program, that administration has a modicum of class, decency, self respect or respect for the game they play, if they lose to FSU to finish the season with a losing record, they should just go softly into the night and not play another game.

No waiver needed, Tech is fired up to beat FSU.
We need a count-down ticker for the ACC-Championship Game on the Sprots front page.
I would rather the NCAA say no, then give the waiver to Ohio St so we can see the two best teams in the country play for the Nat’l title – OSU verses Notre Dame.

I pull for GT BUT to ask for a waiver before you play FSU is like saying to the world “we ain’t got a chance”. GT should put in on the line and say if we don’t win, we don’t deserve to go to a bowl game. If you have a losing record you should stay home and work on having a winning record next year.

Bama and UGA should fill out a waiver that a loss in the SEC Championship should not effect where they are in the BCS ranking and the loser of the SEC Championship will go to the BCS Sugar Bowl and not drop to the next level of bowls!

What can possibly be the motivation for Tech going to a bowl? Is it CPJ’s enormous ego? Come on, don’t embarrass the few faithful left by backing into a division title, losing to Florida State and then getting creamed in another nothing bowl. Give it up!

@Realist – No need to keep using “Tech’s academic requirements” any longer as a reason to accept mediocre football. Look at the top 10. Do you think Notre Dame and Stanford’s requirements are much different than Tech’s? Plus, their guys graduate at a rate higher than anyone else. It’s certainly more difficult to compete on the recruiting trail with the likes of UGA and the rest of the SEC, but it can be done. The reality is that if Tech had any sort of defense this year, they might have 9-10 wins instead of 6 and the conversation leading up to the ACC championship game would be very different. Johnson’s already gone through 3 DC’s so he apparently isn’t very good at choosing them. The issue hasn’t been his “high school” offense, it’s been the atrocious defense.

Okay so let me get this right were bowl eligible and we get punished because Miami and UNC cheats?????? Oh hell no I don’t think so. Those kids fought hard to keep the streak alive and because 2 other teams cheat and we get tossed into the acc championship we get punished? Im glad to be in charlotte myself and I for one will be there yelling for the Jackets. I do doubt that many on here pay a dime to the tech fund but oh well jump off the boat who needs ya! Gives me a better chance to upgrade my season tickets closer to the field. I can tell you what’s obvious here is you ugag fans know that you can’t and wont beat bama and you know Tech has a shot at a BCS bowl and you dont after we beat the noles. So work that overtime this week buy you one of those tickets for the dome and watch Bama demolish you all facts are facts jack! Oh yeah for the record techs schedule and ugags win loss record is below. compare if you dont mind and ive added saturdays championship in both! Might tough schedule there for UGAG there!

So let me get this right, Tech is already palnning to lose the ACC Championship so they are begging to go to a bowl once they do. If they actually go to a bowl, do you think anybody will show up? Sad.

November 27th, 2012
8:24 am

First of all, the ACC is a joke. GHSA state championship tickets cost 4 times as much as ACC championship tickets. In comparison to the SEC where the worse tickets in the stadium are going for 400. One of the teams in the game, if they lose aren’t bowl eligible. To compare to the SEC, where the winner of the game is guaranteed a spot in the national championship games and the teams are ranked 2 and 3 in the bcs currently. When SEC teams cheat they win National Championships, auburn, when ACC teams cheat they still can’t win anything.

If tech is so worried about not becoming bowl eligible, decline playing in the ACC championship game. I’m sure paul johnson has broke another rule and he can claim that is their punishment. The sad part is that paul johnson thinks he can still win the sorry conference with a 6-6 team, but everyone else at tech is expecting a loss.
