Live blog: It’s Tech-Georgia
Whatever Georgia Tech’s chances were coming into Saturday’s game against No. 3 Georgia, the Yellow Jackets’ chances took a direct hit with A-back Orwin Smith sideline with an ankle injury suffered in the second half of last week’s win over Duke.
A couple thoughts
This is going to be a tough, tough climb. As I noted in a couple stories, I think it’ll take a near-perfect game for Tech and then a couple breaks on top of that. Georgia isn’t unbeatable, but the Jackets haven’t faced an offense like this since Clemson. The second-half run has been built on teams with mostly ineffective offenses.
Boston College (98), BYU (65), Maryland (120), North Carolina (17), Duke (87). Georgia is No. 25.
Similarly, the Tech is definitely improved offensively, but, again, Georgia will be a different kind of test.
Boston College (104), BYU (No.3), Maryland (No. 15), North Carolina (No. 55) and Duke (No. 95). Georgia is No. 20.
That said, I think Tech’s got a chance. The team is confident and, regardless of opponent, is playing well. I think it means something that Johnson said the offensive line is playing the best he’s seen in his tenure. Tech will have to win this game on the linemen’s backs, I think.
It might be oversimplifying, but Tech needs to get ahead early, control the ball and get some stops.

Absolutely pathetic. I’ve supported CPJ, but he is an embarrassment as a coach. Awesome offensive coordinator, but he apparently fails to grasp the basic necessity of a defense and special teams. Scully kicking off?? Really?? He’s awful!!! What happened to the walk-on kid that has kicked the last few weeks? And no Orwin Smith today? This could be a very long afternoon unless someone on Tech’s defense grows a pair. The offense should be ok, but they aren’t good enough to match score-per-score with UGA. The D has GOT to make some stops or we are going to get slaughtered yet again.

What an embarrassment that this team will be in the ACC championship game. They don’t play smart and the coach has not clue how to develop a defense or special teams. PJ will probably get a huge bonus for backing into the game even though FSU will beat us down..Both basketball teams looked awful yesterday and now this. Thank God DRad is gone. I can’t believe that Tech couldn’t sell all of their tickets for this “game” today.

This defense has no heart or any play makers. Four years of poor recruting have killed us. They looked like Carter last night in the basketball game. Good potential but no heart or effort at all. I feel bad for anyone who wasted money on this garbage. PJ thinks that they are great because they beat the sisters of the weak in the second half of the season. DRad left us in worse trouble than when he came. 6 wins in football, 10th place basketball, and a baseball coach who underachieves year after year.

Ken, it looks obvious to me in the first 10 minutes that recruiting is the issue. There is no comparison between the Tech players and the UGA players on strength and raw ability. They manhandle us when they hit/tackle us. We are either soft, or not very good. Both??? Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think CPJ does us any favors in the coaching category…….defense is still lame and special teams still sucks……this is like a bad broken record that just keeps replaying. Will Tech keep it within 50 points???

No matter how bad your Defense is, sometimes you have to punt and try to pin them deep.
Going for it near midfield and putting your Def. in bad situations is bush league coaching that belongs at the D1-AA level or at the Service Academy level.
It doesn’t belong in a BCS Conference and neither does CPJ.
7 losses, 5 losses and now at least 6 losses this season.
Three years like that and most colleges will FIRE you, but CPJ is quite comfortable at GT!

CPJ & Brian Bohannon ( The QB coach) don’t teach a precision pro-style passing game so in most cases our QBs won’t throw that ball 3 seconds earlier.
CPJ thinks “his system” is so smart that it will overcome thing like that.
Our QBs are poorly coached, and it is CPJ’s fault, Bohannon coaches BOTH the B-backs & the QBs.

Incredible that we’ve run more plays, made more first downs, and held the ball for 2.5 times as long as UGA, and yet we trail by 25 points. Turnovers are a killer, and we still haven’t put a good defense on the field.

I woul hope that whomever the new AD is will have a heart-to-heart discussion with him and help him understand some things. I would also expect to see an Offensive and Defensive Coordinator hired. In both cases, someone who understands their area and who can motivate players to perform. Without those changes, there is little hope for recruiting enough of the level of players we need to compete.

This team couldn’t win the Southern Conference title, they don’t have nearly enough talent. The best thing that could happen is to lose to FSU the same way next week & then pray that the NCAA won’t grant a waiver for a team with a losing record to go to a bowl. As long as CPJ remains in place, unable/unwilling to recruit even 1/10th enough legitimate D1 talent to field a team that isn’t an outright embarrassment then the best thing that’s left to hope for is as few games as possible.

When Missouri joined the SEC they replaced Alabama on Georgia’s schedule which was done by the SEC not UGA which some otherwise smart people truly believe.They also they also had a home and home with Louisvile but when Georgia pulled out to play Boise St last year Louisvile cancelled this year’s game so they were replaced with Buffalo..

Bit TimeTech Fan — I agree that the officiating has been pretty poor, but the difference in this game goes much, much deeper than that, don’t you agree? GT has no defensive concept whatsoever, and very little idea of what it takes to have an effective offense in this day and age. Forget special teams. I think this game marks a crossroads where Tech either takes drastic steps to overhaul its entire program, from the HC down, or decides to downgrade to a lower division.

The key for GT is the QB….Nesbit was great for this offense because he truly was a duel threat and they had some breakout receivers.

PJ has a better team than he puts on the field. He had S. Hill and rarely used him. He has some good talent now but does not develop or use it. Vad is a perfect example but there are others also. If he rolls out the TO next year, no on will be there to watch it. With Vad Lee, we need to be runing a West Coast type of offense and if he does not know how to do it, then hire someone who does or get out of the way.

I’m loving the comments from BigTimeTechFan… All about the zebras in this game.. none about the lackluster play on offense or the fact that GT’s defense stayed at the bus stop on North Ave. I’m at home brewing some beer right now, you sound like you’ve drank all of yours this afternoon with the crying. Tech didn’t have a chance.. the only chance was coming out amp’d for a rival game. They proved they didn’t care after the 1st 3 drives.
CPJ has no change in scheme, and it doesn’t work against good teams.. Look at the game now. UGA doesn’t have near a single starter on BOTH sides of the ball. The heralded Vad Lee is running around the field getting destroyed, the OLine is so tired and so beat to death, they are holding on to the UGA D line to just get moving.
Boring game all around. It was fun for the 1st quarter. Most of the fans on both sides are gone!

@ cloudman Jacket, today just shows how easy of a schedule UGA has. UGA is not a top 10 team, but tech made them look that way. Anyone want to take a guess on how low the UGS power ranking schedule is? Pretty bad. Tech needs to let PJ go, stop playing a team we will never beat. UGA and move out of the ACC. Ga Tech being on UGA schedule does not and will never beef up the power schedule that the BCS uses for part of it rankings. Just saying.

Rick, I am afraid you are correct. You know during the late 70s or early 80s (the Bill Lewis years) Tech almost did away with football entirely. I am not sure they can go through that again and PJ is taking them there very quickly. His style of football and games like today, insure he will not be able to recruit well enough to compete. Very sad for GT. I went there during the Bobby Dodd and Bud Carson years. Both are examples of what to do and what not to do. Sadly, PJ is an example of what not to do. He is not a head coach.

I love the O. Need stronger lines. D is weak. Totally. I’m embarrassed. I played UGA in several lower level sports at Tech. I know they are crap holes. But we got slacked. I hope CPJ can do better. I still have faith. If they need money, let me know. I’m in for a few.

86 plays on offense with over 400 yards…Vad needs more practice but I see a great future with him…please bring Giff Smith as Def Coordinator, he recruited Georgia so well for Chan…sad dissappointing game…the offense was moving the ball and eating up clock but couldnt score and couldnt stop them…How many on the coaching staff get there walking papers in the next two weeks?

Sad to say, Tech had a terrible game today. Yes, the offense moved the ball but in the clutch it faltered badly.
A 6-6 record shouldn’t place a team in a conference championship game and Tech has backed into.
Paul Johnson has a lot of soul searching to do if he is to resurrect the program. 1-4 against UGA isn’t a good place to start.

An offensive coordinator who has experience with the pistol.
A QB coach who can coach up a qb and teach him the fundamentals of qb passing techniques..
Expand the offense and include a TE dammit .!!
Blow up the defense entirely, I don’t give a damn if it’s a 3-4, 4-3, 4-2-5, or whatever but a guy who can coach X’s and O’s but most importantly get the Joes down on fundamentals, sound execution, toughness, and damn PRIDE !!!!
Lastly Recruit, RECRUIT, RECRUIT !!!!!! GO National if no one available locally hell go International .. Didn’t CPJ coach in Hawaii lets get some Somoans, anybody, GT needs a huge talent upgrade.

Cannot believe I drank the kool-aid and bought tickets to the ACCCG. The embarassment today was not so much the result of bad offensive or defensive schemes but can be traced to the lack of atheletes, i.e. five years of poor recruiting.
CPJ has to put more emphasis on recruting or face the fact that he may soon be calling games from the booth as a broadcaster.
It pains me to say this but UGA was the better team today because they have superior athletes who fly to the ball.

-hire an offensive coordinator
-hire a QB coach
-hire a special teams coach
-hire a whole new set of defensive coaches
-man up and admit of some of this disaster is his making
but Dan Rat rolled the dice with CPJ and put Tech in a hole it may not come out of for a decade. then he managed to get a ACC championship vacated, saddle Tech with a huge fiscal hole, alienate
a mess of season ticket holders, then run like hell for Clemson

Ok, ok, I’m back on my horse again, Tech will not beat FSU and any team(bowl team) they play that has 3 weeks to prepare for Tech’s offense is going to lock them down, Tech’s defense cann’t barely stop anybody, its a bad 6-8 team, that backed into a conf playoff that had nothing to do with winning. Looking out on the game today, the bigger UGA players, the more aggressive UGA players, won the game, it makes me mad when CPJ says he only recruit guys to fit his offense, a excuse? The new AD(incoming) need to pay attention now before its too late!!

Stalin- Tech didn’t win the ACC in 2009… Look Techies, Vad Lee should give you some hope. Not to mention, Smith was hurt today. UGA would have still won the game, but it might not have been as ugly. UGA is a darn good team this year, and firing CPJ would set the program back even further because of the recruiting. It will be a 3-4 year process getting back to a pro-style offense. Stick with CPJ, be relevant in the ACC, and make it to BCS bowls every 2 or 3 years.

Hate to say it but Daw4life is correct. I have been a long PJ fan since the days of southern, and sarting to have serious doubts about the program. But look if Richt who the fans were screaming to be fired just a few seasons back can turn things around again, PJ can do the same. One thing is for sure, the D is a nightmare and the offense needs to play with more intensity. I watched the weekly press conference, and the team and PJ were pretty fired up, didn’t show at all on the field. Paul Johnson isn’t going anywhere because of the buy out and how long it would take to get back to a Pro Style offense. Techies we just have to live with what we have for now and pray that we have a good offseason with recruiting.

Lance Thompson Co Defensive coordinator if Kelly is kept. (gawd I hope not)
Utah St’s defensive coordinator Dave Aranda who has just been nominated for the 2012 Broyles Award would be a better choice. And gets some RECRUITS !!!!!!

I’m curious what the people calling for patience for CPJ can use to justify the request.
-he has gotten worse every year.
-he has alienated most local HS coaching staffs

Tech will never again be a legitimate “rival” to GA, pure and simple. Hate to admit it but the reality is that Tech “may” beat GA once in every 7-9 years. That is not a rival. What 4-5 star player wants to go to an inner city school where students are likely to get mugger the minute they step off campus? The curriculum does not offer majors that many students want. Tech is the Vanderbilt of the ACC. The worst thing, Tech is not a “destination” job like GA, Tenn, Auburn, FSU, Clemson, etc are. They couldn’t keep Curry, Ross or O’Leary. Every time Tech does get someone who can win one or two against GA, they leave for another program. Ross went to San Diego Chargers, Curry went to Alabama, O’Leary went (for a day) to Notre Dame. These are facts, not excuses. Personally, I’m tired.

Either Paul Johnson should go back to Navy, Ga. Southern, etc or Ga. Tech should get out of the ACC. If he can’t win in the ACC he should make a change. Georgia State would be ideal for PJ and his offense and his ego. He keeps trying to prove that his offense is the new wave in college football and defense is a waste of time. Notice how all of the colleges are scrambling to adopt his offense? I have some good friends who are Tech fans….I feel sorry for them when the good teams have to humanely pull their starters in the 3rd quarter to avoid further embarrassment of Tech. How do you think the Orange Bowl feels about having the possibility of a 7-6 Tech team in their BCS Game? They couldn’t sell all of their tickets to the Ga. game. Tech scored 68 points in a game and PJ says “Hoo-rah” look at my offense. But they gave up 50 points. It came down to who had the worst defense. I don’t want to see PJ fired….I want him to find a more suitable job.
