Jackets give helping hand to Bulldogs in rout

ATHENS – Georgia didn’t need much help to beat Georgia Tech, but the Bulldogs received plenty. The result was predictable – a 42-10 loss for the Yellow Jackets on Saturday at Sanford Stadium.

Seeking perhaps the biggest upset in the history of the rivalry, Tech turned the ball over twice, botched offensive plays, tackled poorly and gave the Bulldogs generous field position.

The No. 3 Bulldogs did the rest, plowing through Tech’s defense and proving themselves the superior outfit for the 11th time in the past 12 years. It’s the most one-sided 12-game stretch in series history, replacing 10-2 runs that spanned 1971-1982, 1972-1983 and 1986-1997.

The loss brought to a halt Tech’s second-half run in which the Jackets rallied from a 2-4 start with four wins in five games to gain bowl eligibility and a spot in the ACC Championship game. After this dispiriting defeat, Paul Johnson will have to re-train his team’s focus on what could be even a greater challenge – Florida State in the ACC Championship game next Saturday night in Charlotte, N.C.

Tech will play the once-beaten and 10th-ranked Seminoles with a 6-6 record. Georgia (11-1) will likely play Alabama in the SEC championship at the Georgia Dome with a likely spot in the BCS championship game on the line if Alabama stops Auburn later in the day Saturday.

Tech’s chances took a direct hit even before kickoff when A-back Orwin Smith was ruled out with an ankle injury suffered last Saturday in the win over Duke. With Tech’s most productive offensive player sidelined, the Jackets gave more touches to A-back Robbie Godhigh and tried to establish the interior running game with B-backs David Sims and Zach Laskey Tech actually moved the ball effectively – at halftime, the Jackets had 238 yards of offense and were 4-for-8 on third downs. But the Jackets lost the ball on the opening possession when Godhigh was stripped by Georgia safety Bacarri Rambo near the goal line. Rambo intercepted quarterback Vad Lee on a deep ball to A-back B.J. Bostic to end the fourth possession. The fifth possession, the last of the half, was capped by a missed field goal from 36 yards.

The Bulldogs’ offensive line manhandled the Tech defensive front, clearing wide lanes for running backs Todd Gurley and keeping quarterback Aaron Murray safe in the pocket.

Georgia averaged 10.6 yards per play in the first half, scoring four touchdowns in its five possessions before halftime. It didn’t hurt that the Bulldogs’ average starting point on its five drives was just past its 40-yard line.

The debate is over. But the question of Johnson’s ability to establish his offense wasn’t as relevant as his inability to bring in defensive players who could make a difference between wining 6 games and wining 9.

And there you have it. This is as good as it gets – a middle of the pack ACC team which will need a harmonic convergence to get to the ACC Championship; otherwise, crushed by real teams. I understand Johnson gets another year, but then what?

By the way, who backs up Shawn Green next year?

Good grief, how will the usual motley gang of PJ supporters spin this mess? Let me see…Tech gained more yards, Tech gained more first downs, Orwin was out, Attachou had the flu, etc.

That was a debacle. I am not even sure CPJ knows how to call his own offense. And I wonder if the players sense it. It sure looked like they gave on their coach today. But, we have him for at least another year so time will tell. At least the BB team has a bright future!

GT was pathetic as there defense showed up and then gave up. The offense was OK but could not make the big plays needed to make the game respectable. Coach needs a defesive coach who can get plays to listen, to teach the defense how to tackle and cover wide open pass catchers. The defensive performs like a high school team.
I must say that Tech can not match up with upper crust football teams because they do no have the atheltic players it takes to compete at a high level. They lack fundementals like tackling, pass coverage, thinking on your feet and special teams play.
Tech gave up today and took their punishment from Georgia and never answered back. Several Georgia tackles wre extremely physical and Tech never responed in kind they just took it with the hope the game would end soon.
I have been a Tech fan for a long time but it seems the players at Tech, in the last few years are not very good and right now they could no beat the Camden County high school team. The players have o heart and very little football skils. I sure hope they will improve soon.

The Jackets are 1-5 in those 6 games (shocker!) … and, IMO, they’ll be 1-6 after FSU puts up 40+ in Charolette.

NO team should expect success when it surrenders 40+ so often.

It’s time we all admit that Tech can no longer compete with UGA in football. You can’t beat 5-star talent with 2 and 3-star talent, even if your players are smarter. Football is mostly a simple game dominated by stronger, bigger, faster teams – like UGA. Time to drop this series and more on.

1. The UGA game is the game for Tech fans and you are getting your arse handed to you every year.
2. Recruiting is vital and you are not earning your 2.6 million – there are too many great players in GA and you get very few if any. You better get a young DC who has a pulse and can light a fire under our players.
3. You a losing your fan base coach – we are tired of being embarrassed. I don’t personally want to go to the ACC championship and dang sure don’t want to attend another bowl game we will not be up for.
4. Your offense will not work without opening it up. Your players are now here and “in the system” and they are not able to consistently produce.

I’ve been a GT fan since the early 70’s and I can be objective. Under Johnson, Tech will remain mediocre at best. I don’t want to hear about how difficult Tech is academically; so is
Sanford, Notre Dame, Michigan, etc….etc.

You are not going to recruit top players for D-1 program when you are running a high school offense…..not gonna happen. Bring in a young and “modern” coach and watch the sparks fly. Tech is located in the heart of a city where alot of blue chip and smart players would love to play. It’s left up to you alumni to make it happen.

I’ve watched from afar all year, and it is clear that GT has a very poor defense–stating the obvious. However, I hate hearing that it is because the academic standards are too high to recruit good players. Last I looked Stanford has pretty high standards, and their defense looked pretty good against Oregon last week. No whining; just get players.

Please pay the money and get a real coach. This series is becoming a joke. Tech let’s too many top players leave state. I understand your tough standards, but too many top level students go elsewhere. Stanford, Cal, Vandy, and ND are raiding this state. How can you expect to beat good teams with no passing game. I’m from Georgia and would love for Tech to go 11-1 every year, but something must change. I read on here that the rating services are over hyped Georgia, Clemson, FSU are having good success evaluating talent that way. Please just make this a real game again.

Will !ANYBODY! !PLEASE! get it through PJ’s head he needs a better strength and conditioning program?! It’s pathetic looking at his players constantly getting whiffed for being out of condition. I’ve seen this all too often. Yes, he needs a good DC, but no one is going to be able to do a decent job if the players are too weak and slow compared to the players on the other team.

Ken; you were spot on. This game was pointed out by others as remnisent of the losses to North Carolina and LSU in the Chick-fil-A Bowl a few years back. If you just looked at the stats from the game, and NOT the score, one would think the game would have been extremely close, or GA Tech would have actually won the game in that they had more 1st Downs than UGA (26-18), more Net Yards than UGA (426-379), more Rushing Yards than UGA (306-164), and the Jackets DOMINATED the Time of Possession (39:56-20:04).

The main difference in the game, in my opinion, was field position (for example, the opening kickoff, the play when Rambo managed to “take away” the ball from Godhigh at the 1 yard line as Tech was driving in for the tying score and returned it to midfield, and a ton of terrible punts).

This doesn’t mean the Jackets would have won the game any more than they would have beaten Carolina or LSU in those previous losses. It just means they shot themselves in the foot because they were able to move the ball offensively and failed to score, which would have at least given the team “a chance” to win or make it less “embarrassing.

Shooting yourself in the foot time and time again against a good team isn’t the fault of the coaches – obviously offensive calls were being made that put the team in a position to move the ball effectively and gave them a chance to score points. Defensively? Like most of the year…they stank the place up and needed to make a couple of stops to give the team a chance to win the game. GA Tech only punted twice to UGA’s four times…

So where do they go from here? They go home and regroup – decide whether they want to be embarrassed on National TV two games in a row and contiued to be talked about backing into the ACC Championship game or if they want to man up and play smarter football. Missing tackles and assignments on defense, like they did in the beginning of the season, won’t cut it anymore, and not being able to finish drives won’t either. It’s big boy football now.

Why do you run plays against NC then against Ga pull the stupiest plays ? Johnson needs to resign to save face or else GT needs to quit playing Ga. Year after year its an embarrasement !!!! PJ ony gets players that are offered by MTSU or Memphis. Rad bailed out so he would not have to fire PJ since he brought him in. If Vad is our future then we will never beat Ga again.

Jacket Dad – Class Post on the Georgia Blog.

I believe your analysis is pretty much on the button. The problem that Tech has is that they have a coach who has a history of mediocrity when it comes to Defense. Since he became a head coach, his teams have averaged giving up 23 points a game. You can get away with that at Georgia Southern and to some degree – at Navy. Not in the ACC and not when you play the UGA’S of the world.

Add to it that he has not been able to land one Top 25 recruiting class – let’s just say that it completes the story.

I have many friends who graduated from Tech or who are Tech fans. I try to think of them when I’m on these blogs and treat the people on them they way I would treat my friends. So, while I’m glad we won – I take no joy in other’s suffering. (Well most of them).

Really believe that this program is going to struggle until Tech goes out and finds there own James Franklin or convince Whisenhunt to leave the Cardinals and come home and be the savior.

Good luck to your son next week. FSU will be a similar challenge to – today…

Will some one please explain why we didn’t start the game with Vad Lee when he’s a dar site better than Tevon????? HUH?! Tevon has always been too small, weak, and slow (back to my conditioning argument) when compared to other people on the roster. Thank goodness he won’t be around next year. PJ will be forced to use Vad. PJ has always needed a Vad Lee to run his office. Now all he needs is a good DC and….. dare I say it…. a proper strength and conditioning program so these little players can put some more muscle on their bodies to compete with the big boys. This isn’t the service academy nor is it Georgia Southern. ;-)

With a new A.D. coming in, it is vital for the direction of Ga. Tech Athletics. It all starts with the A.D., he needs to come in and start completely over. New, Young Coach with a Modern offense and a S.E.C. like Defense. The Football Team, as well as the Basketball team has been below average for too many years. Let’s recruit and Win. Time to modernize the Stadium and build a first class program.
You will have to beat Georgia 50% of the time at a minimum. It is either that, or move down and play teams like Ga. Southern and the likes. It is decision time for Ga. Tech Athletics, unless you are happy with a mediocre team from now own. Tech needs a Oregon Duck style team and Coach to compete. Otherwise, it is like taking a knife to a gun fight.

CPJ looked rather not like himself on tv in Athens, looking sick. Tech’s failure to embrace medicine from the pink month cost them the game today. There is no excuse for not getting the shots. Paul,
Do GT the dignity of leaving town, follow your buddy drad, or maybe neyland nc needs a high school coach; you really are an embarasment to the Institute and should be ashamed to collect your pay check.
Your the first to get in a SA face, cursing and spitting with assalt and battery, humiliting and embrassing SA’s and the Institute; you gave a nice locker room speech once saying “I dont want anybody to give me anything, I want take it” or something like that; but apparently you dont practice what you preach, or maybe your doing exactly meant; you don’t mind collecting that big payday for poor performance and then be a jack ass during interviews.
Would love to meet you in person, might even give you an opportunity to (borrow a line of your’s) “punch me in the mouth,” that would be interesting!
While the rest of us GT fans prepare for the ridicule and insults a waiting at church tomorrow, and work on Monday; i’m sure you’ll be smilling in private counting all those GT dollars your “taking.”
Your a bad joke gone very very bad.

Game was over when tevin came out to start. I called it all week, vad would come into the game down 14-21 (turned out to be 18).

Yes defense was horrific. But cpj managed the qbs about as bad as possible. He wasted this season on tevin. Wasted the season. How did he not realize that vad was the better qb in summer camp?

Just for that he should be fired.

If cpj thinks tevin gave us the best chance to win, he should be fired. Even uga fans could see vad is a player.

And guess what, cpj will do the same thing with the qbs vs fsu, and results will be the same.

Tech got what they deserved today. First off, congrats to Georgia as they now play what amounts to a semi final game for the NC against Bama. Georgia was the better team before kickoff. Tech never had a chance and I’m a huge Tech fan. Tech has beaten one team with a winning record. Duke doesn’t count as they are deplorable. The ACC is deplorable with no resurgence in sight. Can you just imagine what the Orange Bowl will say if GT somehow lucks out and beats FSU?

As I mentioned last week I will send an email to CPJ asking him to resign if GT lost to Duke and UGA. Didn’t happen but if thy stink up the ACCCG I still might. We still might be seeing the end of the CPJ era with the new AD taking over in 2013. I seriously doubt the AD will put up with CPJ and he will probably get the president’s blessing. CPJ will be in his last year next year so that hopefully will be it. No extension needed or wanted. Time is up. Triple option doesn’t work long term. Leave that to the service academies.

Rock on….oh yeah, VT is in the early stages of looking for another conference. If UConn is extended an invite many defections will follow.

We have bigger fish to fry!! forget about all the recruiting disparities and the other non-sense I’m seeing on here. I actually thought our offense moved the ball well. We were just unable to finish some of the crucial drives. I’m sure it became disheartening to continuously have long productive drives that never reached the end zone.

… and lets certainly not negate the fact that uga got away with holding, unnecessary roughness and taunting ALLLLLL DAYYYY! It was like we showed up to a street ball game.

I honestly didn’t expect us to win, but that was an embarrassment! We’re neither recruiting the talent nor coaching it up. GT is a D-1 school for crying out loud. It’s tough academically, I know, but Stanford’s no picnic. I know people like to complain about the triple option offense, but heavenly days look at the production we get out of it with 2-3 star players. Given CPJ’s surly and acerbic demeanor he’ll struggle to recruit effectively, and it really shows up in the lack of talent on defense.

I defended CPJ and gt a couple weeks ago but I’m beginning to second guess it now. I didn’t expect gt to win today, but at least thought they would compete. I they did neither. Tech is really that bad and the ACC is obviously a complete joke. This should not be the case. I remember back in the late 90 s when Fsu was so good, they always beat Tech, but Tech competed and gave them a fight. We didn’t do either today. The discrepancy between UgA and tech has never been this large. Our defense sucks, and our offense sucks ( only scoring 3 pts against UGA s 1st string defense and its all on CPJ!

Take the Wheel….I really don’t want to pile on here…especially since the Tech fan base is doing a pretty good job of that already. But you obviously aren’t familiar with physical defensive football…so I will give you a pass. But UGA wasn’t guilty of unnecessary roughness….just playing extremely hard just as you are supposed to. So don’t hate because your defense can’t play that way. GT truly needs a new coach that can get players excited to play for you. CPJ will never be able to do that….which is why all UGA fans hope he stays.

Just an opinion here GT fans and I’m not slamming your offensive system with my comments but high school football players for the most part don’t want to run the TO. They feel like it doesn’t prepare them for the next level. Also defensive players don’t like practicing against it! I spoke with a highly touted recruit recently who is now at Alabama but was recruited heavily by UGA and GT and he told me point blank ” I didn’t want to practice against their offence every day” Both UGA and GT recruit the same players quite often and many of last years UGA class were recruited by GT. I hate to say it, and I’ve even said it about my teams coach, but I think CPJ is your problem. You guys can, and always have gotten a few top notch recruits regularly through the years to be more competitive and still can with the right coach and system…Just my opinion and we all know what they say about those……..Go Dawgs!

As a GT fan of almost 40 yrs I’m used to MTSU losses. Those head-scratching losses have become common enough so that they’re no longer unbelievable. During much of my history with the GT-UGA series, I’d bemoan UGA’s seemingly lucky breaks, but they frustrated me only because the game was competitive and often tensely fought. But today was unacceptable. Maybe the new AD will act when he sees all the empty seats next fall. GT will have to find someone else for my four seats. I’m not renewing.

Head Coach Considerations

- Vic Fangio – Defensive Coordinator – San Francisco 49ers
- Greg Roman – Offensive Coordinator for the 49ers
- Phillip Montgomery – Offensive Coordinator – Baylor
- Derek Mason – Stanford Defensive Coordinator
- Brent Pease – Offensive Coordinator at Florida
- Kliff Kingsbury – Offensive Coordinator at Texas A&M
- Mark Helfrich – Offensive Coordinator at Oregon
- Mike Sullivan – Offensive Coordinator – Tampa Bay Bucaneers
- Ralph Friedgen – presently unemployed
- Todd Monken – Offensive Coordinator at Oklahoma State
- Rod Ash – Montana State
- Bobby Wilder – Old Dominion
- Chuck Priore – Stony Brook

Long Shots:
- Andy Reid – after he gets fired at Philadelphia
- Bobby Petrino – I know… It’s shameless
- Ken Whisenhunt – if he wants to turn around his Alma Mater
- Jim Tressel – also shameless, but he’s a darn good coach

If some of you want CPJ gone then start writing checks. Not giving money and not going to games will leave Tech with NO MONEY to make a change. Hope & Change doesn’t work in politics or college football.

George “GOOSE” Godsey needs to be looked at as the next TECH head coach. He is Learning how to run a team from O’Leary to Belichick. Those are good O and D minded coaches.

As upset as I am with yesterday’s performance, I think it was even more embarrasing with the amount of Tech fans that turned out. Couldn’t have been more than a thousand (and I was one of them). Yet Georgia fans find a way to make it seem as if they are the home team when we play at Bobby Dodd. It’s sad. Our fanbase will only show up when we’re winning, but won’t even identify themselves as “Tech fans” when we’re down.

Well it should be well apparent now that we’re going the wrong way. When he was hired my analysis was that he could take equal talent pool kids and win (i.e. going there and to its rivals anyway and not solely to play football). It doesn’t work at this level. What blue chipper in their right mind wants to go play in this offense or practice against it on defense? So this is the result. We are in a death spiral. What decent coach is going to come here except one in disgrace and then only as a stepping stone? We should have kept Gailey and listened to Dave Braine. Or at the very least, thought through the results of a CPJ hire.

I was at the game yesterday and actually felt sad for the Tech players and 3 GT fans that showed up. The score was 42-10, but it wasn’t even that close, as Bobo decided to put the Water Boys in late in the 3rd Qtr.

The problem with Tech is your offensive philosophy and how you recruit the type of players to run that scheme. When that offense meets a stout SEC defense and you’re down by 2 TD’s, there’s no way to play catch-up, because you’re too busy grinding the ball out on the ground.

Paul Johnson is going to have to wake-up, because 4-5 star recruits want to play in the NFL and with the exception of Calvin Johnson, it’s a tough road when you’re marketing a high school offensive strategy. As a Georgia fan I hope Tech gives Paul Johnson a contract extension and erects a bronze stature of Al Groh.

As bad as we are, we are still better than all but two teams in the ACC. Yes, the ACC sucks.

1. Get rid of CPJ. He does not want to be a head football coach. He just wants to call plays. A good head coach would not allow special teams to suck this long. After failing at special teams, I can’t believe he put Charles Kelley as DC – another coaching decision disaster.

2. Get rid of the 3-4 defense. GT will never get the dominant NT necessary to play the 3-4. This was a program crippling decision (in addition to the poor decision to hire Al Groh)

3. Hire Brent Pease. Vad Lee and our personnel on offense can run that offense. He can hire a good DC and special teams coach.

Defense puts too much pressure on our offense. The offense has the potential to do great things, which it has before. Give Paul time with Lee and a new dc and see what happens. We have plenty of starters coming back. The offense is unstoppable when ran correcty. Just have to have a defense that gives the offense a chance. We put up plenty of yards yesterday without our best offensive player. Not having our best offensive player is the reason we couldn’t score or get a first when needed. I hate losing to uga more than anything. But I still believe CPJ is our guy and is the answer. Don’t give up on him and tech when things are going rough. He will have us back to where we should be. This is a point when everyone in the who has anything to do with TECH football knows, three time before Satuday that the team quit playing, they quit against UGA yesterday in the 4th quarter. The money to buy out Paul Johnson has to come from somewhere, when your team quits playing its more than time to make a change, the few recruits we got have noticed it, the fans have noticed it. What is it to look for, a hard headed coach who wants to be different, thinks he knows everything, doesn’t care about the defense, he didn’t get Tech to this conference championship, North Carolina and Miami did. UGA will be laughing at us (TECH) for the next 12 months for a very good reason, North Carolina State got rid of their coach and he had a better record than Tech. WHATS UP!!!!

You know, I’ve tried to be positive throughout the year. I’ve supported the team with my attendance, with my passion. I’ve cheered for the players and been appreciative and proud of their achievements. I’ve been supportive of CPJ and the staff…until now.
Our Head Coach is doing a (insert derogatory adjective of choice) poor job.
5 years into PJ’s stewardship; our Special Teams SUCK, our Defense SUCKS, to the extent that we fired the DC in the middle of the season and set records for futility, and our offense is weird, gaining chunks of yards, scoring big against weak teams but rarely scoring big against high caliber competition.
Our recruiting has been suspect at best. There is talent on the roster for sure, but the difference between the total of our talent and the big boys (we saw it in full force yesterday) is significant. But we aren’t alone in this as we actually compete in our own league. The entire ACC and most of the country is behind the SEC in total talent. Still….

CPJ has been successful for us, he’s been successful his entire career, but right now he’s not being successful. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt because of his track record, but when you look at the fact that 2/3’s of the team look completely unprepared in the biggest game of the year, hell, for most every game of the year, he’ll, for pretty much 5 years, it’s pretty hard.

I guess I will cheer for the boys 2 more games, hoping for the best, and then see what should be done.

Born2Buzz

gt4life, I appreciate your attitude, I agree to an extent about the offense ( I think it could be awesome if he threw the ball as much as he runs it. We ran the dive play 29 times yesterday? We scored 10 pts. Maybe he was doing that to keep UGA from scoring 70). But this is now a 5 year trend and our defense, which last time i checked is ultimately the responsibility of the head coach, is historically bad. And our special teams play is also a 5 year trend. CPJ has not been getting the job done in 2/3’s of his on field responsibilities. ( I won’t get into the recruiting discussion, but its certainly a point for debate).

How much longer do we give him.

I am not just reacting to this embarrassing loss in Athens. I have been a supporter of Coach Johnson since his hiring, and while I have been critical of his P.R. efforts for the Institute (and more generally the way he represents the Institute with his dour personality), it is clear to me now that we need to make a change. Taking 1 out of 3 from UGA in football is probably about the best we can expect in the current college football climate, and I can live with that. Johnson is now 1-4 against UGA and 0-4 in bowl games: that is not acceptable. I truly believe he is a good man but he is not the right man to coach Georgia Tech. And it’s not even about his offense. It’s about recruiting, not hiring the right coordinators and assistants, and yes, even PR. “That which must be done is best done quickly.”

Full Metal Jacket

November 25th, 2012

I thoroughly disagree with other posters here and elsewhere who say Coach Johnson is a terrible coach and who make snide remarks about the offense. The truth is, he a be doing as a good job as anyone can at the Institute in the current college football climate. But I am willing to take a chance, even in this year of tremendous coaching turnover in the South (2-4 coaches gone in the ACC; 4-5 in the SEC), that we can get a better recruiter and head coach. I believe CPJ will be an excellent OC at a big school or a HC at a smaller one. But he’s just not working out here at the Flats. And the Tech administration must decide if they want to continue the Tech tradition in playing major college football, which means they must compromise more on admissions and enrollment requirements, or if they want to drop UGA and other major non-conference opponents from the schedule and continue to play “small.”

Since Tech currently has no AD, the the prospect of replacing CPJ this year is near zero. He’ll get one more year and unless by some miracle he takes recruiting to another level, adds more imagination to his offense and discovers how to play defense and special teams, then 2013 promises to be more of the same. If I were Tech I would decline to play in the ACCCG and a bowl game and use the time to focus on building the program. It is a mess that regretfully can’t be corrected until the fans and the administration demand it

TOP in the game: GT 39.56. UGA 20.04. To have the offense on the field two-thirds of the game and score ten points is unbelivable if it had not happened. Granted the turnovers did not help, but the offense gained more yardage( almost 400) from scrimmage than UGA. I can`t think of any reason not to score more than 10 points other than not calling the right play at the right time. Anyone have any answers?

Let’s say the NFL does ban blocking below the waist. Then there will be a great hue & cry to ban tackling below the waist because more knees and ankles are torn up by being tackled. The NCAA, in all it’s infinite wisdom, follows suite in each step. Let’s see now. No blocking above the shoulders and below the waist. Also, no tackling below the knees plus hitting above the shoulders is already banned. HMMMMMMM!! What’s next, all these behemoths running around in all that garb plus a kite’s tail flying in the breeze behind them as they run around trying not to be tagged. THAT’s IT! FLAG FOOTBALL!! Wanta talk about the death knell for your favorite sport & all the $$ it brings in?? HMMMMMMMMM? (tongue-in-cheek sarcasm fully intended) But, I can see this scenario being played out. What I cant figure out… in what world does it make sense that PJ gave the dawgs the ball first? I dont follow Tech during the year except to laugh at the losses, but I would think that anyone who knows anything would know that Tech would get killed on Defense and had a chance on offense. Also, everyone knows that if you punch UGA in the mouth with a quick score, we will have trouble getting it together. To me, it was the only chance GT had. When you won the toss and deferred, I knew it was a bad PJ decision… when we scored on the first drive… I knew it was over…

UGA run & pass game. UGA intent on stripping ball B/4 ground contact-holding our backs upright to
strip ball. GT is not, nor has been in class in FB with UGA for several years-are we recruiting at all? Is
it true that opponents (i.e. LSU in Peach bowl several years ago) use practice squads to foil Trip-opt?

Enochs; you are right. The fact is that Tech’s option offense can be stopped with good coaching and good preparation. It has been against lesser opponents many times (Mid Tn St, Kansas, NC St, Air Force, etc) and of course by better teams like the Mutts. Yes, if a team isn’t prepared the scheme can surprise a team a give us a win, but this happens less and less.

If Tech fans are not screaming for CPJ to be fired, then it shows we are settling for mediocrity.

@ GT1990

I would give the start to Tevin. I cannot really see where Vad has been that much better than Tevin. He might pass a little better, but Tevin seems to run the option better. At the end of the day, at times each has looked better than the other. If Tevin isn’t performing, then put Vad in, but either way we get killed in this embarrassing ACC championship game.

Leanred defense from O’Leary, Saban, Monte Kiffin, and Mike DuBosefor cryin out loud!!!! He’s regarded by every HC in the south as one of the best recruiters in the country and he’s completely pen to the spread offense ala hiring a Mumme/Leach disciple. Would he get us to UGA level? No…..The Hill will never allow it.But I think he’d be our best bet and he’d take the job for about a $1M to start.

The defense was terrible, but let’s not overlook the fact the offense wasn’t any better. They managed 3 pts until UGA pulled their starters in the 4th quarter. The defense is the easy target, but the offense hasnt done its part either. Lets face it. Tech hasnt exactly lost to the giants of CFB. The offense played one quarter against Miami, barely showed for a half against MTSU, and never showed up for Va Tech, BYU, or UGA. The D cant stop anyone, but the offense didnt show up against anyone this year bowl eligible except for UNC and Duke. With a better defense, Tech likely beats Miami and maybe MTSU. That’s it. This program has big issues.

BTW, its good to see the usual suspects on here making excuses for Johnson. I do agree that we are stuck with him for at least one more year. However, the writing is on the wall. Its only a matter of time before Johnson is gone. Only the most delusional can look at what has happened the last three years with his own recruits and believe it can get much better.

Gailey may not have beaten UGA, but he competed with them and was a play away from winning several of those contests against some of Richt’s best teams. The gap between Tech and UGA narrowed under Gailey’s watch, and Johnson benefited from that with Gailey’s recruits. That gap is now growing rapidly apart by the year under Johnson. Add to that, the fact the ACC continues to get worse as a conference, yet Johnson’s ACC record is not improving and is worse than Gailey’s record in a tougher ACC. Tech made this bed when they jumped the gun and gave that contract to Johnson. You have to wonder how long the money can keep them from cutting their losses.

I went to ga southern and say this offense invented . vad is the real deal . brendan douglas is comming from augusta next year and will gain 1000 yard in his freshman year. paul must get better players on d and he knows this. you have 1 acc title and are going for 2 this week . I will be pulling for you guys. a lot of ga fans wanted richt fired after our sc loss and here we are. Paul will right the ship . washington is not explosive enough to be the qb but lee is a stud. remeber ga was 6-7 just 2 years ago but we are on the cusp, good luck and go kick fsu in the ass

@jp – Unless you think Johnson will recruit a “Dream Team” like Richt did or get a guy like Jarvis Jones to transfer in from USC, I’m pretty sure any turnaround wont be as dramatic. This team is simply out manned. Al Groh isnt that bad a D coordinator. He just couldnt get anyone in here to run his scheme properly any more than Womack. Tenuta did a good job under Gailey, not to mention the offensive recruits like Calvin Johnson and Jonathan Dwyer, so something’s missing with the overall program and how it recruits.

For those worrying about the buyout we will probably have Coach Moral Victory for at least 2 more years.

The GTAA is on the hook for FOUR more yrs. at $2.6MM per years.

In simple math if we can him after this season the buyout is $10.4MM which represents the 4yrs. left.

After next season it would be $7.8MM, 3 yrs. remaining

Then it goes to $5.2MM for the 2 remaining yrs., this is the most likely time that the GTAA can afford to fire him, which would still be m,ore than the buyouts that Chan had ($4.0MM) and Hewitt had ($5.0MM).

What that means is that because Drad (now known as D-rat) overpaid for CPJ we are stuck with a HC we cannot afford to fire and we will end up giving him access to 3 more Recruiting classes to screw up before we fire him, since HCs are fired after the season is over CPJ will have made all the initial contacts with that 3rd Recruiting class.

By then CPJ will have done enough damage to set GT’s FB Program back 7-10 more years.

The worst part is that when “D-Rat” re-upped CPJ, GT was bidding against no one since no other college would have re-upped CPJ at $2.3MM that escalates to $2.6MM, and then when it became apparent that CPJ’s gimmicky Triple-SLOPtion would not work vs. the Big-Boys of CFB, “D-Rat” cut & ran for greener pastures at Klimpson, leaving GT high & dry and stuck with a FB coach that cannot be fired.

Any other HC in a weak conf. like the ACC that had a 3-year run of; 7 losses, 5 losses, and 6 losses (with more to follow) would be fired except at a school like Dook.

The GT fans and the GT Admin is WEAK for keeping CPJ after such a poor THREE YEAR run!

As for replacing Johnson, the best thing for Tech to do is give him one more year. The buyout will be less, and there is just too much competition out there this winter for coaches. UT, Auburn, Arkansas, N. C. St. and others are looking. Let them grab what they can, and then go looking next year.

Personally, it might be time to bring in a spread offense guy that actually throws the ball. Some young spread coach that can recruit a QB that can toss the ball around and that creates space. Those systems have been working very well at places like Arizona, WVU, Washington St., Texas Tech, and Baylor where recruiting isnt traditionally any better than what a coach can do here at Tech.

I like the idea of going back to pro-style, but I’m not sure we can recruit the lineman good enough to make that work. Either way, a shift in philosophy is needed.

Bobby Petrino? Forget it. let someone else deal with his baggage.

I bet tech gets 28 on fsu this week up until this past game or last years tech was on score from beating us in each game . stay the course T F . he will turn it around . that running offense is still a thing of beauty when you guys get it rollin. GSU was just like tech and the we got some d and won 2 more titles.

Also, if Tech replaces Johnson soon, here’s hoping they learn their lesson. I dont care if the new coach beats UGA in his first two seasons. Dont give him the big contract until you see him win with his own players. Granted, i dont think that will be the issue this time around. Johnson isnt exactly stocking the cupboard with the likes of Nesbitt, Dwyer, Thomas, and Morgan. Still, the point is, dont get all happy about one win over UGA and sign over the deed to the entire school this time.

I have to point out that I think Johnson himself is a class act. He just doesnt run a system that will work at the major college level to the degree most fans will demand, especially when your biggest rivals are recruiting at a much higher level than Johnson can. I was never for hiring him in the first place because of that. IMO, Johnson needs to take this system to a mid-major conference like the MAC, Sun Belt, CUSA, MWC, or head back down to FCS. its clear he can beat teams that arent loaded with top 15 recruiting classes. He wont find that kind of competition at those levels, and should do just fine. I hope that’s what he does because I wish him no ill will, and on a personal level, hope he continues on with a successful career.

You forgot 0-4 on 4th down attempts. There is a play that’s sometimes used on 4th down that works quite well. It’s called a punt! Don’t complain about the Dawgs starting field position when you choose to go for it on 4th down. Putting your team and your defense in this position is costly. The outcome may not have changed but when your defense is struggling don’t put the pressure of playing on a short field on them. The result of these short fields in the first half was 28-3!

Tech will sell some tickets next year because they do have some true fans. Fans who will support their team through thick and thin. They will, also, raise hell when things are moving in the wrong direction as they are now. The reason UGA dominates Tech is because we have more rabid fans. Fewer fair weather fans. Get rid of Johnson and search hard for a rising star. Force the new AD to upgrade the facilities. Fight for your team. Does it bother you that a UGA alum has to say this to you. It certainly should. I accept the loss to Georgia as they are the better team. Congratulations DOGS and best at the SEC conference game. What I am having difficulty is accepting how we lost; how we lose this season. While high expectations are real for many and no higher than Coach PJ stated they are for himself the effort consistently demonstrates underperformance. From the coaches, to scouts, to players to preparation to on field execution this team lacks the measure for true success. I agree we under recruit. I agree we lack balance in all facets of the game inclusive of the offense. While their are stats to demonstrate results in gaining yards and points they do not illustrate the narrowness of our game to ACC and especially SEC type opponents. To continually rely on a ground game with undersized players against a faster, bigger more athletic defense suspends reality. Frustrating with less than 1 minute and we continually try to run for a score when down touchdowns. Not a single pass to the end zone. Why does PJ feel it is an insult to his offensive style to more routinely mix the run with a pass. A screen pass once in awhile may reduce the pressure on the QB and open up other threats. I’m tired of not having a coach with a play book in hand on the sidelines that shows alternate plays to take advantage of tendencies or situations. This notion that he knows everything and will not be questioned is wrong. He clearly does not and his manner cripples the team from advancing. His running onto the field by 7 yards just before a snap as he pushes Wallner from the numbers into the line is inexcusable behavior. He is a bully. His behavior lacks the maturity of a head coach and disparages the school, the program it’s athletes and fans. It is time for him to sit down and allow others to lead as he is not a real leader.

I do not excuse the other coaches or players. Minimally you are expected to do your job. You are rewarded with roles, titles, and a fan base which weekly supports the team. When players do not block, when defenders do not tackle, when receivers do not catch then you are disrespectful of the Team. Our special teams is noticeably very poor. On knockoffs we are routinely short, on punts we are dismally weak, and field goals suspect at best. It is wrong when young men like Scully, Poole and Tanner do not commit themselves to self-improvement. Please do not pat each other on the helmet to support each other when you fail to do your assignment. It is wrong and disrespectful. Sweeting and Johnson you routinely get beat on the long pass, play off of the receivers by 10 yards or more and at best tackle the ball After the catch. When will you two ever stop the catch. Number of tackles is not the measure for CBs. Stopping the catch is.

I wrestle with the QB but ultimately believe the better athlete is required for this role. Today that is Vad. But understand this young man needs to step up and play as a leader for hitch I believe he may become. We need and require a more balance offensive scheme that leverages his assets. To shove him into the game down 39 points without a game plan that permits him to get into a passing rhythm is unfair. We certainly should have expected to play catch up. And why in the world would you not pass more to Wallner? The young man has height and I believe will be much more reliable than Greene. The latter lacks focus and real ability.

Lastly, as a seasoned ticket holder I do not welcome us being in the ACC championship with our record. It is debilitating to the integrity of the program when we are the representative. My feelings are that we haven’t merited the right to be there irrespective of the explanation as to how we got there. If we lose to FSU we should demonstrate respect to the honor of the game and bow out of a bowl game. It will demonstrate we still have honor for real sportsmanship to respect the game and the real lessons we are trying to teach these student athletes. Respectfully submitted as a true Tech fan.

From where I sat up behind our band (section 101), it looked like we didn’t “give” as much as they “took”. Godhigh had about as much chance of keeping Rambo from taking the ball away from him as he had getting out of that embarrassing tackle by Ogletree. The short fields were mostly the result of plays by really good athletes (Mitchell kick return, Rambo fumble and interception returns) against barely average athletes. Throw in the “genius” play calling on 4th down and you have a recope for a blowout. Going for it on 4th down has to be equal parts “we think we can make it” and “we can stop them if we don’t”…we really had neither on Saturday. Maybe Moobs wanted to give them the short field so he could say we outgained them. In the first hald, they could have scored if they had started their drives on the 1 yard line IN BOBBY DODD STADIUM 60 miles away. CPJ as much as said so in his post-game. As long as he is too arrogant to expend effort recruit better players, we will keep having to watch their Ogletrees and Rambos to that to our Godhighs.

To grown man football….& all others that take joy in the deliberate attempt to injure a fellow competitor in a football game. I fully expect to lambasted & attacked for this comment. I played football for a good number of years. I played tackle both ways. I was coached to play hard…to hit hard….to hit clean….to never hit someone so as to even look like I was trying to injure a fellow competitor….that injuries would happen, but not to deliberately block or tackle someone with the intent to injure….I know y’all are screaming chop blocks, they are illegal, cut blocks are not & if there were any chop blocks called, it was appropriate they were called….The Ogletree tackle was not the way this game was meant to be played. Y’all can brag about it if it makes you happy. It was not the only questionable play by georgie. I can assure you that WWE style play would not be tolerated if I were the coach. I can also assure you that WWE style power slams would not be tolerated if I were the referee watching that play. The WWE at least has a padded mat and a ring that has built in bounce to it to lessen the impact on their performers (& that is what they are). The turf has no where near that much give to it. That particular player would have been banished from even being on the sidelines if I were a game official watching that happen. And then I would have warned the coach that if I saw it again, he would be banished from the sidelines too. The officials were ACC refs too. I guess they didn’t consider that unnecessary roughness. Well, I do. I don’t recall ever seeing a tackle done that way, even in a NFL game. Godhigh could have sustained a serious injury from being body slammed in that manner. That type play has no place in any football game anywhere.
