ATHENS – Georgia didn’t need much help to beat Georgia Tech, but the Bulldogs received plenty. The result was predictable – a 42-10 loss for the Yellow Jackets on Saturday at Sanford Stadium.
Seeking perhaps the biggest upset in the history of the rivalry, Tech turned the ball over twice, botched offensive plays, tackled poorly and gave the Bulldogs generous field position.
The No. 3 Bulldogs did the rest, plowing through Tech’s defense and proving themselves the superior outfit for the 11th time in the past 12 years. It’s the most one-sided 12-game stretch in series history, replacing 10-2 runs that spanned 1971-1982, 1972-1983 and 1986-1997.
The loss brought to a halt Tech’s second-half run in which the Jackets rallied from a 2-4 start with four wins in five games to gain bowl eligibility and a spot in the ACC Championship game. After this dispiriting defeat, Paul Johnson will have to re-train his team’s focus on what could be even a greater challenge – Florida State in the ACC Championship game next Saturday night in Charlotte, N.C.
Tech will play the once-beaten and 10th-ranked Seminoles with a 6-6 record. Georgia (11-1) will likely play Alabama in the SEC championship at the Georgia Dome with a likely spot in the BCS championship game on the line if Alabama stops Auburn later in the day Saturday.
Tech’s chances took a direct hit even before kickoff when A-back Orwin Smith was ruled out with an ankle injury suffered last Saturday in the win over Duke. With Tech’s most productive offensive player sidelined, the Jackets gave more touches to A-back Robbie Godhigh and tried to establish the interior running game with B-backs David Sims and Zach Laskey Tech actually moved the ball effectively – at halftime, the Jackets had 238 yards of offense and were 4-for-8 on third downs. But the Jackets lost the ball on the opening possession when Godhigh was stripped by Georgia safety Bacarri Rambo near the goal line. Rambo intercepted quarterback Vad Lee on a deep ball to A-back B.J. Bostic to end the fourth possession. The fifth possession, the last of the half, was capped by a missed field goal from 36 yards.
The Bulldogs’ offensive line manhandled the Tech defensive front, clearing wide lanes for running backs Todd Gurley and keeping quarterback Aaron Murray safe in the pocket.
Georgia averaged 10.6 yards per play in the first half, scoring four touchdowns in its five possessions before halftime. It didn’t hurt that the Bulldogs’ average starting point on its five drives was just past its 40-yard line.

I have been a Tech fan for a long time. I swear if I see any of the defensive players at the Varsity I’m going to punch them in the face and I know they want hit me back! If they did try to hit me, they would probably miss! Coach Kelly, you have been here long enough! Our 2013 recruiting class is a joke, no disrespect to the kids, but they are offered scholarships only at piece of crap schools! Just damn!

Pack it in and ask for inclusion in the Southern Conference. We are truly sad.

No defense all year. Not sure why anyone expected one to show up today. Tech was physically thrown in the bleachers today. Poor recruiting shows up again. Sadly, can’t see it getting better anytime soon. Ga Southern at least showed up in Athens willing to fight. Can’t say the same for the Jackets.

Love all of the UGA “fans” who’ve never set foot on campus in Athens, much less been in Sanford Stadium, or even suited up for a college football game (most even a high school football game) coming over here acting like THEY’VE done something special this afternoon. Good for them…I’m sure this makes sad little people feel like they’re smart or important. Trolls will always be trolls, though, and everyone knows trolls are insignificant and losers; nothing more than a waste of time, space, and breath.

Tech won the National Championship in 1990. Their academics haven’t become tougher, if anything they might have an easier academic load in the IM program. If Stanford, Vandy and Notre Dame can be competitive, so can Tech. But boy, as a Georgia fan, I felt really bad for Tech today. There’s obviously a huge disparity right now, and with only 15 scholarships this year, it won’t get better any time soon. But good luck guys, one day you will be back.

It was embarrasing to have the ball stripped from Godhigh by the Georgia player on “d” who lacked a “d” in his name of Baccari and had Rambo as his last name. Such a named player was probably a test tube baby born with such a name for Georgia football. And to top it all off, then he intercepts one. Well, Tech’s Ramblin Wreck song lyrics of “bottle of rum and sugar 3,000 pounds” had to abdicate to Baccari, not to Baccardi.

Tech lost b/c they were hit by the flu. The pink month of bc aware did not sink in to them to inspire them to get flu shots at infirmary. CPJ looked rather not like himself on tv in Athens, looking sick. Tech’s failure to embrace medicine from the pink month cost them the game today. There is no excuse for not getting the shots. I was laid up in infirmary myself with the flu many year ago, and I get shots well in advance now. Tech needed to put their money where their pink mouths were today up in Athens, and if all the players and the coach were healthy, maybe Tech would have won.

From the looks of half empty Bobby Dodd on Saturdays I’d say a lot of Tech fans dont and have never set foot in their home stadium…Such a sore loser you are.If you watched Tech play all season there should have no way you thought they would win today.Dont throw sour grapes at Georgia blame your head coach for recruiting subpar talent and sticking with that Knute Rockne offense.Solve your own problems and you wont have so much venom to sprew at Georgia because your program will be winning.

Paul,
Do GT the dignity of leaving town, follow your buddy drad, or maybe neyland nc needs a high school coach; you really are an embarasment to the Institute and should be ashamed to collect your pay check.
Your the first to get in a SA face, cursing and spitting with assalt and battery, humiliting and embrassing SA’s and the Institute; you gave a nice locker room speech once saying “I dont want anybody to give me anything, I want take it” or something like that; but apparently you dont practice what you preach, or maybe your doing exactly meant; you don’t mind collecting that big payday for poor performance and then be a jack ass during interviews.
Would love to meet you in person, might even give you an opportunity to (borrow a line of your’s) “punch me in the mouth,” that would be interesting!
While the rest of us GT fans prepare for the ridicule and insults a waiting at church tomorrow, and work on Monday; i’m sure you’ll be smilling in private counting all those GT dollars your “taking.”
Your a bad joke gone very very bad.

Game was over when tevin came out to start. I called it all week, vad would come into the game down 14-21 (turned out to be 18).
Yes defense was horrific. But cpj managed the qbs about as bad as possible. He wasted this season on tevin. Wasted the season. How did he not realize that vad was the better qb in summer camp?
Just for that he should be fired.

Cpj gave vad one drive versus duke. Is that how you prepare a qb? Kid just led us to 68 against unc, and you play him for 7 minutes?
If cpj thinks tevin gave us the best chance to win, he should be fired. Even uga fans could see vad is a player.
And guess what, cpj will do the same thing with the qbs vs fsu, and results will be the same.

Tech got what they deserved today. First off, congrats to Georgia as they now play what amounts to a semi final game for the NC against Bama. Georgia was the better team before kickoff. Tech never had a chance and I’m a huge Tech fan. Tech has beaten one team with a winning record. Duke doesn’t count as they are deplorable. The ACC is deplorable with no resurgence in sight. Can you just imagine what the Orange Bowl will say if GT somehow lucks out and beats FSU?
As I mentioned last week I will send an email to CPJ asking him to resign if GT lost to Duke and UGA. Didn’t happen but if thy stink up the ACCCG I still might. We still might be seeing the end of the CPJ era with the new AD taking over in 2013. I seriously doubt the AD will put up with CPJ and he will probably get the president’s blessing. CPJ will be in his last year next year so that hopefully will be it. No extension needed or wanted. Time is up. Triple option doesn’t work long term. Leave that to the service academies.
Rock on….oh yeah, VT is in the early stages of looking for another conference. If UConn is extended an invite many defections will follow.

hate to just keep piling on Johnson, but many bloggers last week pointed out that if Tech fell behind early, it might just have an impact of the negative kind and Tech evidently did win the toss and elected to kick knowing all along that the present kicker has a range of about to the 10 at best…and it happened. Was that a good decision?

TechAPP…………..Just thinking exactly the same thing. Why would you give UGA’s offense first crack with the ball knowing how bad your D is? I don’t get it. Probably wouldn’t have made any difference in the end, but at least we might have hung with them a little longer. Heck even GA Southern hung close for a half. I don’t know, I though Johnson might have the team playing a little better, but now I dread next week I imagine FSU is going to be looking to take a pound of flesh from us after losing to the Gators.
