Georgia Tech quoteboard

“Anytime you lose, the whole stuff bothers you. I think the penalties, the turnovers, the self-inflicted stuff bothers me the most, that we can’t call a formation and play together that we can’t run on (the correct snap count), that we can’t run a play without holding. All those things bother me.”

Coach Paul Johnson on what bothered him most about the loss

“It’s very frustrating because we’ve been preaching all week, Take care of the ball, do the little things right and we’ll give ourselves a chance to be in the ballgame. It just felt like we laid an egg.”

Quarterback Tevin Washington on Tech mistakes

“I think total yards, they don’t add up in the win or loss column.”

Washington on Tech outgaining Georgia 426-379

“They won the last four. The only way to get the thing going the other way is to beat ’em. You’ve got to hope next year’s team will be able to come out and hopefully get a win.”

Washington on Georgia’s dominance in the rivalry

“You’ve got to flush it and move on to the next game. I feel like we’ve got another opportunity to go out and get a win. Guys are excited. We’re playing for the championship. We’ve still got a lot to play for, get a chance to go to a BCS bowl if we win.”

Washington on getting ready for the ACC Championship game vs. Florida State

“I was just trying to make a play for the offense and keep trying to get more yards and he just got me.”

A-back Robbie Godhigh on getting stripped of the ball at the Georgia 1-yard line by Bacarri Rambo

“We’ve got to stick together because some guys were fading apart during the last bit of the game, but we’ve just got to stick together and hold tight because we’ve got something big up next week.”

Inside linebacker Quayshawn Nealy on defensive players’ frustrations at the end of the game

“They tried to make sure that we didn’t get the ball on the perimeter. That left it up to me and (Zach) Laskey a lot to try to get some of the tough yards on the inside. I think we were able to do that pretty much most of the game, but it wasn’t enough.”

B-back David Sims, who led Tech with 71 rushing yards, on the Georgia linebackers – fd

“I feel like if you watch the film, it was more so from a scheme standpoint as opposed to them mushing us around, but they ran the ball successfully for sure. They got some good schemes on us, they managed to find creases. Their running back isn’t very easy to tackle, so when you add in all those things, you have a problem.”

Defensive end Izaan Cross on Georgia’s running game

“Really? Were you watching the game? Do you think it mattered where they got the ball?”

Johnson, in response to a question about Georgia’s field-position advantage in the first half

If (biggest word in the English language) we had scored on the 1st possession instead giving up the strip & having the resulting 14 point swing, would the game have been different. Oh well, can’t live on what ifs! Suffice to say, georgie got the ball bouncing their way early & we never got a good bounce.

This team has quit in a game three times this year now. Time for some changes. no decent AD will want to come here now and be handcuffed with the bad contract that DRad gave PJ. PJ needs to be forced to hire an offensive coordinator and get of these guys who don’t understand you have to pass the ball to win sometimes. if he doesn’t like it, Delta is ready for him to leave.

This was UUUgly!

We knew we were not the best team and we certainly didn’t play well despite moving the ball offensively. You can’t fumble on the 1—protect the ball–you could tell that was a strategy by UGA to try to strip the ball. The int by Vad was one of the worst throw balls he’s ever made—throw it in front of the receiver and it was 6. We knew the D would have a tough time and they did. Good win by UGA—final thoughts—Roll Tide!

Yes, Nova, I am clueless. I guess you think Middle Tennessee is that much better than us. You are clueless if you think that we will ever win with PJ’s talent level and recruiting. He is getting killed in recruting because other coaches tell these guys they will never make the NFL playing at Tech and they believe it. PJ must change must is too arrogant to see it and thinks stars don’t matter.

The picture in the AjC showed the Tech players jumping around looking fired up. I haven’t seen them that fired up during a game in 3 years. They seem to have grown tired of PJ’s attitude and his constant yelling. This guys is a jerk to reporters and people wonder why the meda seem to always be against us. We are in a no win situation now. No one is going to buy tickets to a bowl in Texas or season tickets next year with PJ talking about how young we are and how tough the conference is for the fifth year in a row. We cant afford to fire him or keep him now. The team is in the ACC championship game but the fan base is apathetic since the team plays so poorly in almost every area. Maybe Arkansas will want him. That is about our only hope now.

That’s why you do what you do, is to get an advantage, little people are going to try to cut you. … I think what they do is good, but we’ve played in more physical games.”

Folk can talk about Stanford, ND, Vandy, Northwestern or which ever school comes to mind & their tuff academic requirements matching up with GT or even more all they want. And those schools being able to recruit the better athletes ala the Bammers & Georgies and their ilk. They forget that those schools have the same broad based curricula that georgie & bammer have. And that GT has a very limited curricula with not even half the majors/schools of study of the other schools. Hell, the Ga BOR has even taken schools of study (School of Commerce in 1933) away from GT & put it in Athens. Tech did get the Ivan Allen Business College thru the good graces of the BOR, but there is no Urban Studies, Women’s Studies, Journalism or any of the multitude of majors that the other Universities have. Anyone that does not admit to this difference just does not want to acknowledge the difference this makes in recruiting. It is not an excuse, it is a fact. A kid can go to Tech and have a narrow selection of majors or go to a university like georgie and have over 170 choices for his undergrad major or go to Tech & have 36 choices for his undergrad major (count them for yourself as I did). I/we are not making excuses, just stating facts. If anyone wants to deny this fact, have at it. Stanford, ND, Vandy & the other high academic requirement schools have way more than 36 undergrad majors, I guarentee that. Heck, Tech only offers 113 degrees total=36 undergrad, 47 masters & 30 doctorates. Selah!

November 25th, 2012

@Biff, 1 4 GT and all the rest of you calling for CPJ’s head (or other dramatic changes)

I think you all agree with me that the major reason for these big game losses – and the increasing margin of defeats to uga over the past 5 seasons – stems from our inability to recruit top-notch talent. Even a supposed coaching genius like Saban will acknowledge that the one aspect of the game that will win you championships – or at least win you games consistently – is defense. And defense is all about the level of talent you bring in, not the scheme or plays you run. Simple as that.

With the defensive minded Tenuta/Gailey, you saw that (mediocre) consistency… we never had a losing season, but did not have outstanding years either, which matched our level of recruiting, something which hasn’t been that great since we shifted to the ACC and Dodd retired.

So as far as recruiting goes, as long as we are in the ACC and type and size of enrollment of a technical research university, and a small – if somewhat more intelligent and more moneyed than the others – fan/alumni base, our recruiting will not improve dramatically. We will never get the 4/5 star studs consistently like uga does, no matter who coaches or how tough or easy our academics is. (And please stop making excuses for these losses as academics, it may be true but it’s getting old and the bulldogs deserve legitimate credit for their program – to say that we would be at their level if only our academics were easier is deluding ourselves.)

Now about the coaching. It is a sad state of affairs in college football, but program stability and tradition – in general, of course – are getting thrown out the window in lieu of 5-year contracts and high turnover in coaches and assistants. Just like with the advent of up-tempo, spread offenses, the old-school defenses of Al Groh and the like have been neutered. The college football landscape is changing with conference realignments, BCS playoffs, etc. and many traditions are on their way out, like it or not.

How many legacy programs do you see around you? I mean programs like Penn State (until last year), VT, and Fla St (until 2009)… programs which have had the same coaches for 10 or more years (with largely the same assistants), and a well-oiled machine that recruits steadily and plays consistently year-after-year. Very few. The landscape has become very chaotic… 14-0 national championship seasons are often followed by 4-8 debacle seasons.

What we need is stability, and a genuine legacy to build upon what Bobby Dodd left us with. Leaving aside the fact that our athletic department is short on cash and would not be able to fire Johnson until 2016, big-time coaching changes at this crucial juncture will not help. We’ve already seen too much assistant coaching/coordinator instability within Johnson’s tenure – 3 defensive coordinators, new special teams coach, co-OL coach getting fired, new strength/conditioning coach, new AD – that our program lacks direction and stability.

This, more than the triple-option scheme, is what is causing us to lose out on maximizing our limited recruiting ability (the annual losses to uga don’t help either). But the gap between our program and uga’s has gotten so wide that man-for-man, it is becoming near impossible to beat them and get some of the great statewide talent that leaves for big-time out-of-state schools.

So, unless uga’s program implodes – an unlikely possibility – we need to forge our own legacy and build a future where we don’t have to beat uga for the season to be considered a success, where we can take our 2 and 3 star recruits and give them the best education and coaching possible, and get some national respect. And I think Johnson is up to that task.

This will be a long and winding road. There will be losing seasons and more debacles like yesterday’s game to come. VT and Boise State did not build their programs from scratch overnight. But we need to define our program, raise its stature, and take it beyond Dodd’s shadow. And so, I for one, am behind Coach Johnson for the next five years as well… and I hope he makes good, solid assistant coach hires that won’t jump ship at first opportunity.

Go Jackets. Up with the White & Gold.

If there’s money to build the McCamish Center then why isn’t there money to buy out Johnson’s contract? Certainly Tech alumni have to be one of the most successful groups around, with many of them being extremely well to do? So what gives? To keep on saying that Tech’s athletic department is broke and can’t afford to fire Johnson seems incredulous and insincere. If there is enough influential alumni out there who really give a crap about Tech football and want to do more than just complain about it then it’s time to step up and do something before the problem becomes insurmountable. It should be obvious how bad things have gotten. And it should be just as obvious that things won’t get any better as long as Johnson is the head coach. Can anyone legitimately say that the results of this season so far actually shows that things are getting better? He’s a fifth year coach with a team he recruited that couldn’t beat Middle Tennessee State or muster enough competiveness to prevent getting beat yet again, this time by the worst score, at the hands of his cross state rival. If he’s already restricted in recuiting because of academics and is further restricted in recruiting because the best players don’t want to play in his offense then what good is he? How will he ever win enough games that matter if he doesn’t have the talent? System or no system, he’ll never get over the hump. Yeah, that’s right. I’m tired of losing to UGA and I’m tired of losing bowl games. But most of all I’m tired of the excuses. Pass the hat if need be but let’s find a way to make the neccessary change and save Georgia Tech football..

I have followed Tech long enough to know that they will come out and put up a good fight against FSU. Years ago it was about rivalry between schools and today it is about rivalry between schools and conferences. The ACC recruits the majority of it’s players in the same geographic area as the SEC. As long as we have the cozy relationship between the media outlets like CSS or ESPN witch have contracts with the SEC to promote their conference. These media outlets will continue to devote their football shows to talk about SEC schools and you will have what you saw yesterday where three SEC schools beat their ACC rivals. This is not a case where success of the SEC is driving talk about the SEC this is a case where the ESPN’s and CSS of the media drive the continued success of the SEC by making it a status symbol to play for an SEC school by not exposing both conferences equal time in the same geographic area. This is clearly the fault of the ACC management because it’s up to them to solve this problem i.e their own network or contracts with local media outlets. Schools, academics, playing for your home state mean nothing to the majority of top recruits today. It’s a status symbol to play in the SEC because of their success But what goes around comes around an that will all change with time.

The ACC this year is awful. A lack of competition drags your team down. Look at what the ACC has managed to do to FSU and VT. We have a great basketball conference, why not football? also, we need a Sports Management major like UGA has so we can have a place for those who don’t want to be engineers, but want to remain active in sports. Quit trying to play the academic card , its BS.Simply put PJ can’t recruit and has assembled of the worst coaching staffs in America. Johnson is in way over his head.

Well I guess we will see ATLXMAN!

UGA are just a bunch of thugs. They will not beat BAMA and never see ND! They are much less effective when they play teams they can’t wrestle around WWF style. They will be beaten to humility next week when forced to just square up and play football.

It’s so funny how dwags put Tech down but celebrate the win like its the Super Bowl. Doesn’t make much sense. If you really feel like you’re so much better then it shouldn’t feel like a huge accomplishment eh?

What we really need is for our players to begin putting out 100% for the entire game and not just the 75% for 75% of the game. We only had two games where we busted butt the entire 4 quarters.

I’m not much a fan of PJ but I disagree with all calling for his head. Most of you are just mad that he won’t do things your way. I don’t blame him for not allowing you to dictate his job to him. He was a genius against Duke and now after one (anticipated) loss you want his job! Unbelievable.

Sure they need better recruiting but you could all own part of that blame. GT fans don’t make playing for the school any more attractive for top recruits. Its simply not a football environment. The home games are boring, even the little jumbo-tron entertainment is lame. Clearly UGA, Clemson, KY etc. make their players feel like stars, they get behind them and stay there win or lose. GT fans turn on the team every other game!!

Who needs in state rivals with fans like Techs!

Several thoughts —
(1) For those blaming the Tech administration for not adding a school of Sports Management…..the Tech administration HAS TRIED to add that school, and it was vetoed by the dwag-loaded BOR. They WILL NOT ALLOW Tech to add schools that might attract more athletes
(2) Johnson’s OFFENSE is NOT the problem, even when it comes to recruiting OFFENSIVE players. His PLAY CALLING is sometimes a problem, but NOT the offense itself. The DEFENSE is the problem, and hopefully a new Defensive Coordinator can change that, and it CAN be changed overnight. Carson change Dodd’s defense radically in 1966. A better strength and conditioning program/coach is needed too.
(3) To give credit where it’s due, UGA had the better team yesterday and deserved the win; obviously with our defense, it could have been even worse than it was.
(4) UGA will not beat Bama, but if, by some chance, God forbid, they do, they WILL beat Notre Dame.
(5) In football at least, the ACC SUCKS and it’s hurting every ACC school that wants to have a good football program

Supersize , The offense scored 3 points on Georgias 1st team defense, didn’t score a TD vs BYU. The offense isn’t a problem as long as Tech is playing a bad defensive team, there is little talent on the offensive side of the ball and there is very little help on the way. The problem is PJ and his inability to recruit, coach those he does recruit and hire a competent staff. He is in way over his head . How many off this PJ recruited team will be all ACC? Quit playing the academic card, Elite players do not want to play in this system or for this coach.

@ wrecked again……Tech’s offense shot themselves in the foot yesterday as much as anything….and I don’t mean that as an excuse or as a way of putting down UGA’s defense. But we marched 83 yards down the field on our first possession, only to let Rambo snatch the ball from Godhigh’s hands. That drive was indicative of how good the Offense CAN be; the fumble could have happened no matter what kind of offense was being run. Not fumbling and then scoring would not have changed the ultimate outcome of the game, but it DID change things and put us in the hole from the get-go. Had the defense EVER stopped the mutts, the offense would have done their part. The only reason “elite” players, whoever they may be, don’t want to come to Tech is because we are not winning. Give us a defense, and the offense will be fine, and the “elite” players will at least be attracted.

It is pretty darn simple. CPJ flipped the ACC and rivalry upside down with CCG’s recruits. The last 3 seasons have been mediocrity sprinkled with a few bright spots. Wow…

The trashing of Georgia by the same guys who were claiming victory this week is staggering.

Calling Georgia ‘thugs’ and already naming Alabama as the winner of next weeks game is ‘at best’ poor form. While at the same time, assuming that Tech will beat a darn good FSU team and somehow meet and beat UGA the 2nd time is delusional and borders on being just plain stupid.

I never write harsh comments on the UGA or Tech blogs – but some of you guys need help…

For what it is worth; I truly want to see Tech have a successful program. Not at the expense of Georgia, but for the school, the alumni and fans. These blogs bring out the worst in a lot of people from both sides. We all have friends/relative that attended the other University. I want these guys to look forward to the season and to enjoy the games – that means winning…

Good luck against FSU – I hope you win and I hope you win your bowl game.

There is too much talent in this state for Georgia Tech to fall to this level. I’ve posted the following stat numerous times – CPJ’s career – his defense’s have averaged giving up 23 points a game. This year is looking to land somewhere between 33-35. That state is LOADED with talent that plays on the defensive side of the ball. No reason in the world why that GT shouldn’t be grabbing more talent than they are…

Go find your own James Franklin or hope Whisenhunt is released from Arizona and pay him whatever it takes to come home.

Well, I guess we can come up with ten reasons this game is not worth playing any more. Blame Bobby Dodd for pulling out of the SEC. The ACC has slid so far now that even Va Tech is sucking. Why would a premier high school athlete go to an ACC school for football when there are other conferences getting more respect? This has made CPJ’s job at recruiting the top talent impossible. I would add that Richt basically has the triple option conquered, wouldn’t you say? When you shut off the pitch outside and you have hogs up front, all that’s left is the pass. There you have it.

Re. Jacket-1 post; It’s time to put this National Championship business to rest. TECH has never had a “consensus” National Champ. They claim four, 1917, 1928, 1952 and 1990; all of which were shared with another team(s). UGA has two “consensus” titles; 1942 and 1980. UGA has three additional claimed championships; 1927, 1946 and 1968. UGA doesn’t proclaim these three from the high heavens, because they weren’t undisputed!!!! By the way, I was raised a TECH fan by my TECH grad father, who loved TECH dearly, and agreed on this topic. As a UGA grad myself, he and I had some really strong discussons about UGA vs. GT, and I miss his “hate” for my alma mater!! After reading all of the comments as of Monday morning, (I am a semi-retired Tech Alumni) Tech and its fans should accept the fact that Georgia Tech is an institution of higher learning that is rated with the best in the USA and the world, such as Harvard (Ivy league football), MIT (no football) and Cal Tech (no football); and not a football factory that pretends to be a University.

Our country needs Scientists and Engineers a lot more than it needs professional football players.

The southern conference looks like a good choice.

CB, you literally made me laugh out loud. What a self-congratulatory idiot you are. Please stop comparing Tech, a fine institution, with MIT or any school in the Ivy league. Tech is an above-average regional institution, but you are not stealing a single student from the Ivy’s, the service academies, nor top-tier schools like MIT, Stanford, UVA, or even VaTech (a school from your own conference which also boasts highly competitive athletic teams). Comparing Tech to these schools academically is as comical and unfair as comparing them to schools with far more competitive athletic programs.
There are plenty of excuses for Tech’s futility on the gridiron, but Ivy-league academic standards is not on that list. Buffoon!

I still feel guilty about wasting Calvin Johnson’s college career. I would throw deep balls down the sideline and Calvin caught them every time. Sadly most of my passes kind of floated five yards out of bounds. Calvin would come down with the ball regardless how far out of bounds I threw it. It didn’t get us any yards but it was amazing to watch. We never did beat Georgia but that is not my fault. I couldn’t believe they never found a better quarterback than me. I’m still amazed I played at all. I don’t think we will ever beat Georgia again.
