Tech selects AD search firm

Georgia Tech has hired search firm CarrSports Consulting to assist in its hiring of an athletic director to replace Dan Radakovich.

The Gainesville, Fla., firm’s previous clients include Duke, Texas, LSU, Virginia, North Carolina, N.C. State and Florida. The firm will work with school president G.P. “Bud” Peterson and the search committee chaired by Tech graduate and Georgia Tech Foundation board of trustees member Stephen Zelnak.

Zelnak, who provided lead gifts on the basketball practice facility as well as the football team meeting room, said Tuesday that the committee has begun meeting and considering input from alumni and athletic department staff.

“President Peterson, I think, wants to solicit the best inputs that he can get,” Zelnak said. “I think that’s exactly what he’s doing. I don’t get any sense that there are any predetermined choices here. It’s going to be a wide-open process.”

Zelnak declined to name candidates nominated by alumni or staff.

Radakovich resigned Oct. 29 to take the same position at Clemson.

How bad is Tech Football……It’s Georgia week and we get a story about the AD search. Yep, Saturday won’t be pretty. This is what I would write about also I guess.

The unexpected Big Ten expansion makes it a heckuva time to be without an AD. Perhaps the inner circles knew this (and Clemson’s possible move to the SEC) were coming and it stoked DRad’s departure. Regardless, I hope the commitee (depite its southern slant) considers candidates with strong Big Ten ties since that is where Tech needs to be when it all breaks loose. And given it is about television markets and AAU academics, Tech is a reasonable candidate for the Big Ten. THWG… go doggie piddle on your own blogs.

Charlie Cobb at Appalachian State. Last hire Tech made from there turned out to be pretty darn good.

I understand there is an ex-Georgia AD that has experience and is looking for a job. It would definitely be an upgrade for Tech, and we know he likes girls.

Why is a search firm needed? This seems like a wasted layer that will just cost Tech. What is the search committee doing? What a waste of time and money. Make Paul Johnson the AD if he beats Georgie.

ADs like CEOs are overated. The important hiring decisions are all made by search committees anyways.

George P. has my vote.

I dont get the B1G talk making any sense. I like the ACC if for all sports, not just FB, BBall, Baseball and all others make much more sense from a geography standpoint with N and S divisions.

If remaining schools remain then— add UConn and hold at 14 or make a play for PSU, cut a deal on their $$$ now so that when ND comes on board full time we are set at 16. Make the 15 school division rotation work somehow and solidify the conference except for ND full membership in FB.

Thinking outside of the box, Wes Durham. Before you start throwing stones think about this:
1. Well respected by the Tech fanbase and others.
2. Seems to have a good knowledge about the college football world outside of GT.
3. Straight shooter that can deliever information, be it good or bad.
4. Understands the academics at GT and how it effects recruiting.
5. Might be the guy that can improve fan support and enhance fund raising.

Atlien………that is a rather jaudice view of Ad’s & CEO’s job descriptions. If they don’t do important things, why do all big companies and Universities & Colleges have them. Are they all stupid but you?

What is needed is a level headed AD who understands how to invigorate the fan base and how his coaches need to recruit. The academics stuff is a load. GA Tech had lower academic markers than the rest of the ACC and the SEC. Two plus years ago PJ got the courses he said he needed to get the players he needed so that flag won’t fly well.

I hope GT gets a great one, with vision and a will to make GT the best it can be, I hope they get one who knows how to raise money, bring in fans and not settle for mediocity. A person who is strong enough to deal with CPJ’s strong personality. A person whp won’t hide behind excuses, that man will have to be a great man.

Happy Thanksgiving. Thumbs down on Big 10. Why go there? What’s so bad about the East Coast? The Big 10 states are fraught with drought and should be avoided as a liability. The ACC is an asset, not a liability. Its net worth contains very little liability. Farmers out there in the sticks in the Big 10 states, out in the corn rows, are dealing with drought, and misery loves company. They’d love to have some sucker East Coast schools join their conference.

I agee with the real Old Gold. Curry would be the most logical candidate because he is a direct Bobby Dodd link, and he is known nationally by virtue of many tv appearances. Curry had disagreements with Tech such as when he wanted to close in the football stadium and Tech wouldn’t let him, but if he became AD he might get his way this time. I didn’t like his black jerseys. I recall the head of the Alum Assn saying in a Tech Topics alum mag that “black is out” as a Tech color. Curry also had a team that lost to Furman at BD under construction, when the old cinder block track was being replaced. So he has his own assets and liabilities, but his greatest assets are that he is a BD legacy, he is no longer a coach so he’s available, he was in the pros, and he’s only 70. Any recommendations for people w/o Tech links who are unknowns should be disregarded in my opinion.

I don’t understand this B1G talk either. TV contacts come and go. If ACC was winning FB games in the next 5 yrs, we regret the move? Academics is less in the Big Ten. They are full fledged state schools. They offer basket weaving and cultural studies past times. We have a strong brand to not only protect, but grow as well. Business school is starting to make some serious noise and of course engineering. We have a recruiting deficite now, it’s worse in the big ten. Makes me think of Vandy.
I just don’t think we fit well there.

I remember going to Grant field on Thanksgiving Day to watch the GA. TECH freshmen play the GA.bullpups.Both teams actually wore uniforms that represented the state well. Tech with the white and gold classic traditional football uniforms, the best looking in the nation by the way.Georgia wore red jerseys with silver helmets which looked good too.Today Tech chooses to wear the hideous honeycomb look with some kind of weird X on the side of the jersey.GA. now wears red helmets with a stolen Green Bay Packer G on the side.I hope the new AD at TECH will ban these roller derby style football uniforms and bring back the pride of the trademark TECH uniform.GA .TECH needs to take a hard look in the mirror and start turning this football program back toward its roots.Happy Thanksgiving.

bill curry would be an excellent ad. i lived down the hall from him and he always represented himself in a respectable manner (except, of course, when he took the ala job). nobody can figure that out.
but as a player, college or pros, coach, etc. he has always been a gentleman. smarts and class: what else? oh yes, a gt grad….

Bill Curry would be an excellent interin AD for all the rigth and obvious reasons. He could serve as a mentor for several years. Tech needs to leverage its strengths in foottball like the new BB coach is doing by utilizing Mr. Bobby Cremmins.

Bill Curry as AD? What a joke. Curry is 70 years old and just retired after a terrible season as HC in the Colonial.
The AD is the COO of a $50MM business. It is a 60 hr/week, 52 weeks/year job. It is not a position for a retiree.

Bill Curry is a QUITTER. He was given the head coaching job at Georgia Tech and he QUIT to go to Alabama. Curry had almost no coaching experience when he was handed the job and he thanks Tech for that gift be quitting. The best thing about Curry quitting was that we got Bobby Ross as a coach and the National Championship after Curry left. Curry gets the ax at Alabama.
It would be surprising if Curry was not coming to North Avenue to lobby for another payday. Send him away.
