By making the ACC Championship game, Georgia Tech’s bowl options have probably been reduced to four.
The ACC’s contracts with its partner bowls stipulate that the ACC championship game loser can fall no farther than the Sun Bowl, which sits third in the selection order for ACC teams after the BCS bowl games.
Tech is likely to be a candidate even if it loses to Georgia Saturday and then to Florida State in the title game, which would drop the Yellow Jackets to 6-7. Last year, UCLA received a waiver from the NCAA to participate in a bowl with a 6-7 record. The Bruins entered the Pac-12 title game with a 6-6 record and fell below .500 – the standard for bowl eligibility with a loss to Oregon.
Tech’s options:
If Tech beats Florida State in the ACC championship, it will go to the Orange Bowl.
If it loses, the Yellow Jackets can be selected by the Chick-fil-A Bowl, the Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando (formerly the Champs Sports Bowl) and the Sun Bowl in El Paso, Tech’s destination last season.
At this point, the ACC bowl-eligible teams are Florida State, Clemson, Tech, Duke and N.C. State. Virginia Tech and Wake Forest could gain bowl eligibility with wins Saturday over Virginia and Vanderbilt, respectively.
Should Clemson beat South Carolina, the Tigers would be a strong possibility to be selected as an at-large team for a BCS bowl, as was the case with Virginia Tech last season. Clemson is ranked No. 11 in the BCS standings released Sunday.
If Clemson isn’t chosen for a BCS game, the Tigers would be an overwhelming favorite to be taken by the Chick-fil-A Bowl as they would be the only ranked team besides Florida State in the ACC.
Tech’s candidacy will be influenced by its performance against Georgia. In 2008, Tech received a Chick-fil-A Bowl invitation despite not making the ACC title game in part because of its win over the Bulldogs.
“I think the thing that Tech needs to do is keep winning,” Chick-fil-A Bowl scout Gary Floyd, who attended Tech’s win over Duke. “If they keep winning, they’re playing themselves into a pretty good bowl.”
The other ACC candidates:
N.C. State – 6-5 after losing to Clemson. The Wolfpack finish with Boston College, which grants them a pretty good shot at ending at 7-5. However, fans appear to be lukewarm on the season in general and coach Tom O’Brien in particular.
Duke – 6-5 after losing to Tech. The Blue Devils haven’t been bowling since 1994, so they have some novelty, but they’ve lost four of their past five and have given up 40-plus in all four.
Wake Forest – 5-6 after losing to Notre Dame. Demon Deacons don’t have much of a résumé – their best win was over North Carolina in the second game of the season. They’ll need to beat Vanderbilt to gain eligibility, which is anything but a sure thing.
Virginia Tech – 5-6 after beating Boston College in overtime. It’s the Hokies’ worst season since 1992. It’s hard to imagine much bowl-trip enthusiasm for fans this year. Their best win? Possibly the season-opening win over Tech.

ACC Conference Credibility on the line this weekend…
FSU vs FL
Clemson vs SC
GA Tech vs GA
Wake vs Vandy
Interesting that Tech wins against Duke and that opens the door to two extra games. I will go to the Championship and Bowl game if Vad Lee is the QB. Not going if Tevin, with all due respect, is the QB.

If GT keeps on winning they won’t be in the Chik-Fil-A. Only way they make the old Peach Bowl is if they beat UGA but lose to FSU.

I am a BIG CPJ fan. My only disagreement with him has been redshirting Vad Lee. Sure would have been nice having him with a year under his belt this year. Plus, that would have put two eligibility years between Justin Thomas and Vad Lee. We should be able to recruit Vad Lee – Justin Thomas level QBs at least once per two years.

Hopefully, GA revealed some things to CPJ while playing GA Southern. Additionally, FSU is probably spitting nails cause you know they have not been focused on GA Tech and probably will not until after the FSU – FL game.

Every now and then a team gets a magic spell. You could see it in the second half of the Duke game. GT has the magic. When you’ve got the magic, you don’t need the talent. Everything will take care of itself. I wouldn’t want to be a Dog or a Seminole right now (even with the better teams they have).

This Georgia Tech team really needs to finish strong this year to get positioned for the start of next season. PUlling out a couple of upset wins, or al the very least being very competitive and maybe stealing a bowl win (to reverse that trend), would help get this young team ready to start strong in 2013. I’m a realist, so I know UGA and FSU will be heavy favorites, but some good national exposure with strong performances would help morale and recruiting too.

Oh boy do I hope you are MT! I feel it too! But I’m still nervous about it. I suspect that is normal though. Almost feels like I am one of the players….maybe an O tackle..left side….my old position.

As a fan, I know the ChickFilA pays schools well but it’s no real treat for players or fans. and we just went to El Paso last year. Orlando is no big thrill, but at least there’s some shopping and theme parks for the wife and kids. All I really want out of a bowl game this year is a win….anyhow, anywhere.

Just to be clear, the ChickFilA Bowl is a great bowl game, but not so much for Tech or UGA fans and teams who are already familiar with the city, the venue, and aren’t likely to spend much time or money in the ATL.

Of the next three games, I am afraid I am old-fashioned. If we could only win one, I’ll take beating the ‘dogs any day over a bowl win……and in our current situation, I’d take a UGA win over a FSU and ACC win any old day.

The Sun Bowl? Go Tech have fun in El Paso… Just stay north of the border and keep your head down. Juarez is the most dangerous city in the world and just a bullet away.

I’d rather to see Miami not to take self-imposed sanction, So GT will have a record 5-3 and 6-6. It might be more bowel-eligible, instead of getting two more humiliations and bowel-possible. Is there anyway to do that? Win-Win.

CT-Jacket….we don’t need any of your opinions on here. How can you comment if you haven’t been to the stadium in the 3 years since the bowl banners were taken down? Buy a ticket and support the team or shut the H&&L up!

We need a good FG/Pat/KO kicker/Punter..KO should be able, EVERY time, to put ball out of end zone if PJ says to…and punter should be able to punt 50 yds consistently, as we usta could…
