UPDATE, 7:23 p.m. – Sunday could have been the day that Georgia Tech earned a spot in the ACC championship game. Instead, it was just a day to recuperate and to merely begin planning for the showdown with Georgia.
At his weekly Sunday news conference, Miami coach Al Golden said he had not been informed of his school’s decision regarding a postseason ban in the face of pending NCAA sanctions. Tech will play in the ACC championship game against Florida State Dec. 1 in Charlotte if Miami pulls itself out of the postseason for a second consecutive year. It is unclear how long Miami can take to announce its decision.
As of late Sunday evening, no official word had come from the school’s administration.
“I learned a long time not to worry about things I can’t control,” coach Paul Johnson said after the Yellow Jackets’ 42-24 win over Duke, a victory that earned Tech no worse than a share of the Coastal Division championship.
Miami earned bowl eligibility Saturday with a win over South Florida. Golden told reporters that the lack of an announcement may stem from the impact of last year’s announcement after the 11th game of the season, a day after the Hurricanes became bowl eligible. Miami lost the season finale to Boston College. Golden said Sunday “there’s no question” the timing of the self-imposed ban affected the team’s motivation.
Miami is facing a gamble with its decision. Should the school decide to play in the postseason and beat Duke, it will play against in-state rival Florida State for the Hurricanes’ first-ever ACC championship. But if it makes that decision, it’s possible Miami could receive a postseason ban of one or more years from the NCAA in the future when the team could be even stronger.
Miami also runs the risk of excessive self-sanctions with a second consecutive bowl ban, although NCAA compliance experts believe that the Hurricanes are due a multi-year bowl ban after allegations of millions of dollars of impermissible benefits, some with coaches’ knowledge and participation.
Even if Miami doesn’t self-impose, the Jackets can reach Charlotte via the old-fashioned method. If the Blue Devils beat the Hurricanes, Tech will win the Coastal with a better record than the Hurricanes. Tech could still tie with North Carolina at 5-3, but the Tar Heels are already ineligible for NCAA misdeeds of their own. Miami-Duke starts at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, 30 minutes after the kickoff Tech-Georgia, which could mean a busy afternoon of channel flipping for Tech fans.
“They’ve got another game to play,” Johnson said of the Hurricanes. “That (Duke) crowd we played today is tough. They played hard. They compete. I don’t think they are going to roll over.”
Duke coach David Cutcliffe, who has led the Blue Devils to bowl eligibility for the first time since 1994, will have to rally a team that Saturday saw its ACC title hopes dashed at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
“It’s too significant a year to not prepare and play well against Miami,” Cutcliffe said. “Our seniors are 5-1 in Wallace Wade (Stadium). I’m telling you, that’s hugely significant. We need to go prepare starting (Sunday) night like a team that intends to win.”
With uncertainty hanging over its head, Tech needs similar intent. Tech opened as a 14-point underdog Sunday to the Bulldogs, ranked No. 3 in both polls and winners of 10 of the past 11 games in the series. The topic was addressed in the locker room following Tech’s win over Duke.
“Everyone knew that next week was going to be the biggest game of the year for us,” said A-back Robbie Godhigh, who scored multiple touchdowns for the second game in a row. “We’re just ready to go out there and fight.”

I really want my “beloved yeller jakits” to go CLT. However, I also feel for the Miami players who have worked so long and hard to qualify for a bowl. It would be a real kick in the face for them,, why should they want to stay there if they are penalized with a ban. Punish the guilty players, the boosters, the administration,,, not the innocent. I still feel the pain of having our championship stripped from us due to admin errors.

GSU DUD…..you have been claiming for several days that Johnson is scared to schedule Ga Southern. Tech HAS scheduled them for sometime in the near future, but there was no way for Johnson to get them scheduled to play during the past 4 years, because the OOC schedules for both Tech and UGA (and probably all schools) are made like 10 years in advance. Presbyterian was an exception this year because of the rescheduled VT game. But I can assure you Johnson is not scared to play anybody, and it was probably his doing that GS will be on the schedule soon.

I don’t see us getting long, sustained drives like Sat against Duke. We’re going to have to try a few home run balls and trick plays. 1- They played 2 good football teams this year and lost to one of them.
2- They beat what seems to be maybe not a really good Gator team.
3- They will have prepare for 1 quarterback , 2 quarterbacks?
4- So you guys think Kentucky, Missouri, Ole Miss can get yards on the ground and we cannot? Are you kidding me?
5- Oh, I forgot , they the the “Heisman” candidate as their QB , do you realize his TD to Turnover ratio is among the worse in the SEC when playing a quality opponent, what this means is ” Hit the boy in the mouth” , he loses it.
I , for one , like our chances!

While you at the game , did you bother to look up at the scoreboard when it showed four zero’s? Duke only had 24 points , do you realize what a great accomplishment that is for a strong offense (Duke) against a flawed defense(GT)? All you can ask of your team is to play hard and improve every week , GT has done that.

Good luck on winning the Coastal and playing for the league. I watched some of the game v Duke and was surprised given the resurgence that the place seemed half empty on the ESPNU broadcast.
I do a lot of business with Tech grads so bought a season ticket package for several years. We just couldn’t seem to generate interest in getting customers to use them or go with us. In fact, giving them away was work.
Why when your team obviously has shown resilience can you not get fans to attend? Its a great venue and the games are entertaining. Seems odd to me.

Of course we may have a passing record set against us. Maybe we will work in a pick six and Golden will take one to the house as equalizers. We Tech fans know we don’t really deserve to play in a championship game this year, but we will play if we get the opportunity just like we will go to a bowl if one wants us. Why? Because we need the practice and experience too badly to say no. Truth is that we should have beaten Miami without going to OT, but our defense disappeared.
Our young players are getting better and someday our coach may get interested in defense. We can’t pay 2.5 million per year for just an offensive coordinator much longer.

We play for championships based upon the college football rules. I do not believe someone who does not win their division can win a National Championship, but we have seen them play for it. Miami played Nebraska in 2002: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002_Rose_Bowl
This year, we played by the rules and if we go to the championship game and win it, we deserve the Orange Bowl. And I will be there from Illinois like I was in their in 2010.

At 6-6, GT would be at the low level of my expectations this year. Swap out the Uva and MTSU games, and it would be exactly how I would have envisioned the worst case scenario. The MTSU game was clearly a case of a team in crisis internally. And the fact that the VT and Miami games were so close shows just how close the team was to being 8-3 or 9-2 at this point, which would have been what I would have hoped for. The tough games for GT this year were VT, Uva, Miami, Clemson, UNC, BYU, and Uga. A good year would be 3-4 or 4-3 against these teams. A great year would be 5-2 or better. The MTSU loss is a function of team dysfunction. Basically, you look at those 7 games and GT could have gone anywhere from 0-7 to 7-0 against them. More likely, GT would go 2-5 up to 5-2. Do that and GT is going to have 7 to 10 wins this year. The MTSU loss took GT down 1 win from the general low expectation. But all things considered, GT could be looking at 5-7 had they lost the 7 tough games as predicted at the beginning of the year. GT is hairs away from being 8-3 right now, and that’s what we need to focus on. The team is so close to being a top 25 team, and they need to focus on winning each game one at a time, as cliche as that sounds. What I want to see is CPJ open up the playbook against Uga. I want to see Vad/Tevin running the read option from the shotgun. I want to see Vad/Tevin throwing passes from the shotgun. I want to see Vad or Tevin being allowed to make multiple reads at the line of scrimmage. I want to see 1 back sets with receivers coming across the middle of the field. I want to see the no huddle/hurry up offense. All of these things have been used this year, and I want to see GT use all of it against Uga. I do not want to see Tevin playing the role of game manager in a tight game in the first half. GT needs to come out and make a statement and if it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. GT is going to have to score points quickly to get in Uga’s head, and they can’t do that if they are trying to do the let’s ram the 3O down the opponent’s throat game plan, because Uga will stop them. So as not to ignore the D, the D needs to play with purpose. Get in the heads of the Uga blockers! Do not let Uga dictate the pace of play when they are on offense! The D needs to step up and play the role of shocker. The O will be ok, but the D needs to play lights out. And if the O plays lights out, this can be a big win. I want to see the GT team be fired up from 00:00 to 60:00. No lulls.Give up a TD? No worries, we’re gonna come back and destroy them next time! This is the mindset that needs to happen!

The following is the most intelligent post ESPN’s Heather Dinich has ever posted:
Who programmed “overrated” into the computers this year? There’s no way Georgia and Florida are THAT much better than the ACC’s top two teams — if they even are better at all. Florida State has a chance to prove that this weekend, when the Noles host the rival Gators in the final game of the regular season. On second thought, Florida’s unwarranted ascension in the BCS standings might be the best thing to happen to FSU because if they win on Saturday, it will carry even more significance.
A shakeup in the standings was expected this weekend after Oregon and Kansas State both lost, but the rapid promotion of the SEC East comes as a surprise while the ACC maintained its status quo. Florida beat Jacksonville State. FSU won on the road to clinch the ACC’s Atlantic Division. Georgia overcame a slow start to beat Georgia Southern, not to be confused with Georgia Tech.
The SEC is rewarded for beating up on the little guys while the ACC is penalized for it.

When it comes to choosing their CHAMPION, either every other division of College football, and the NFL, have got it wrong, or D-1/FBS has it wrong.
The NFL might have to scrap the playoffs and go to the more popular (and correct) system of having old guys in suits pick who their Champion will be. Yeah, riiiiiiiiight.
The BCS is becoming more & more of a joke the more they “control” CFB.

P.S.
Quit worrying about Miami’s “decision”!!! There’s a game the Saturday BEFORE GT would play FSU! IMO, I’d rather win that one than beat FSU! The ACC needs a 12-1 FSU in the Orange Bowl, and an 11-1 Clemson in the Sugar Bowl.

Agree with your strategy BW—Tech needs to play wide open. UGA has too many playmakers on D—it will be difficult to grind out a long drive–the more 3rd downs you have–the greater chance for UGA to get a stop. We’ll need to throw on first down, go hurry up for a series or two, try a lot of special plays—run pistol more, unbalanced lines—just be as unpredictable as possible. We’ll need a few Beno-like breaks Saturday as well, but maybe the stars in heaven will align.

This is exactly what I am thinking. GT needs quick strike scores against Uga to have a chance. Long drives that result in field goals or worse does nothing other than shorten the game for Uga.

Having first been a Jacket fan since my early days and having had the chance to cover them for much of the last 3 decades, I am confident. I am confident if Georgia Tech plays their “A” game and executes to the best of their abilities Saturday, they will have a chance to shock (collar) the dogs. Miscues and mental lapses could mean a UGA win. My gut tells me CPJ will have the team primed and ready and the Dogs will be having flashbacks of 1998 when the game is over. GO JACKETS & TO HELL WITH GEORGIA!

BW, good post about opening up the O but thats not PJs style. He may run a little pistol and throw on 1st down some but we just have to execute. Make the proper reads, play penalty and turnover free and cut block, cut block, cut block.

Dream on Honeybees…..You think you are going to stop UGA’s National Championship opportunity?! Wow that WOULD be sweet for you but its just a fantasy for you enjoy before the reality sets in Saturday. Do enjoy the fantasy though….
But come Saturday UGA is going to beat you by at least 20. It was really nice having a tune up this weekend against Georgia Southern who runs the same offense that you clowns run. Man, that just took your only advantage away. UGA might clip your honey wings by 25…..
It would take divine intervention for GT to beat UGA this Saturday. I suggest all of you spend every minute of every hour this week on your knees in prayer. Its your only chance.
Face it This is the week before the UGA game and just like every year you wake up Saturday from your wild dreams of victory and face your reality. The agony of another defeat to UGA.
This offense you run will never beat UGA. It was cute the first year or two but now its not a serious challenge. You might win in the ACC with it but unless you have a top 5 defense, that offense will never get the job done against UGA. I hope you keep Johnson as coach another 20 years….
Oh I almost forgot………..GOOOOOOOO DOGS!

UGA is going to blow over you by half time and then play in the SEC Championship game against a very beatable Alabama team and pending the outcome of that may be playing for the National freakin Championship! Has a nice ring to it dont it Bees?!
Hmmm last time UGA WON the NC. Who was their opponent? I Beelieve it was the current #1 team….You can skip history this week after the education I just gave you. You got history and current events in one. Now go prepare for your post game loss party cause it wont be any victory involved for you…….Jan Kemp.

I think Schultz is peeing his pants. He predicted UGA to the NCG and GT as ACC champs and IF Miami imposes and UGA beats GT (and Bama) then both COULD happen.
I think GT has a shot this weekend but I think UGA defense is too talented and if they play focused the Dawgs pull away in the second half. I think GT has a better chance against FSU due to their inconsistent QB play and fewer “studs” on D line and at LB.

Columbus, thanks for checking in on the TECH blog. Is it true uga is pushing to add a few more schools to the sec so you guys won’t ever have to play a tough regular season game? GTech is the second best team on your crummy schedule this year and we know how the toughest game turned out for you don’t we?
I must say, it worked out well for you though. You’re hanging your #3 ranking on a win over a team that had to block a punt in the final seconds to beat Lafayette. That’s it for big wins big guy and FSU will expose UFraud this weekend and then there will be nothing of substance there. Maybe you can beat the ACC Coastal division champs, maybe.

Truth Is… Murray could throw for 400 yards and be on the bench in the 3rd Q awaiting the Bama game. Or… he could throw for 175 yards and 3 INTs and Lose the Game. Or… he could throw for 175 yards and 3 INTs and WIN the Game. THAT’S… Why they PLAY the GAME.

I think Duke beats Miami straight up. Too much pressure for those kids. But if Miami wins they will play the ACC Championship because it is against their rivals FSU. They can’t give a free shot to FSU in the state of Florida.

The Jackets definitely have a chance against the Dawgs!! There is no way that the Dawgs can hit receivers anybetter than UNC or Duke. Tech won. I am telling you that if Tech can dominate the clock with long drives they not only cna win but will win. there is no torture like the offense sitting/standing on the sidelines and the Ugly Dawg fans growing apprehensive about the defense not being able to stop the running game of the Jackets. Just let Johnson and his team take care of business. That this team could be in the position it is in now after two OT losses and actually leading Clemson in the 4th Quarter says alot about its mettle. The Dawgs are in a fight of their lives. Never has there been a more overrated team than they are. One quality win over an also moverrated team-the Gators.

IF UGA had lost to SC by a score of 145-0, and that was the LONE LOSS, then assuming UGA had the head to head victory over their closet SEC EAST partner Florida, then that does it. SC? Oh,they were HUMILATED by Florida AND LSU. SC HAS TWO HUMILIATING LOSSES. SC HAS NO TRADITION. CASE CLOSED.
Keep in mind, LSU and TAMU did not ave to play UGA and they were lucky, OR they would each have one MORE loss.

Murray, T. King, Chris Conley, Artie Lynch, Rome, GURLEY, Marshall, Ogletree, JJ and JJ and Bacarri and Theus and ( I am out of breath) and Swann will STOMP GT.
UGA plays D that is simply not found in the ACC. UGA’s up tempo O will keep the jackets guessing. Murray will roll out and run it or throw it and GT will be confused.
GURSHAL will amass 345 yards AND 3 TDs with Murray throwing for 325 and 4 TDS.

Why is it taking the NCAA nearly 20 months to give a verdict, Miami has already taken a bowl ban last year, the players who were gulty paid last year and served Games suspensions up to 6 games and still the NCAA hasn’t ruled when we were first summoned the day after OSU for their violations.
The NCAA has given verdicts that make No Sense what so ever, they have already made a Mockery of themselves by them being so blatant inconsistent, They just gave Muhammad for UCLA only a 3 day suspension and he has to pay back his %$1,600.00 improper benefits and is eligible to play today his first game after missing only 3, Seems like the BIG MONEY institutions only get a slap on the wrist but small Private schools wait in purgatory for their sentence.
A lot of Coaches have absolutley no Faith in the NCAA.
