Jackets roll Duke, await Miami decision

On the same rectangular patch of Bermuda grass where shock, embarrassment and disappointment visited in earlier weeks, Georgia Tech celebrated.

On a brisk late-autumn afternoon, the Yellow Jackets’ reclamation of the 2012 season continued in the form of a 42-24 victory against Duke on Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium. In the final home game of the season, Tech continued its improvement in the second half of the season with a victory that may even secure itself a spot in the ACC Championship game, a destination all but unimaginable just a few weeks ago.

“After the way the season started and everybody kind of wrote it off, I’m proud of these guys for hanging in there and fighting and getting it done,” coach Paul Johnson said.

With high-level execution of the spread-option offense (13 of 20 on third downs) and a strong second half of defense (seven points on four Duke possessions after halftime), the Jackets claimed their fourth win in the past five games. Their performance Saturday demonstrated Tech to be a different outfit than the one that gave away an overtime loss to Miami, sleepwalked through a 21-point loss to Middle Tennessee State and was trounced by BYU, all at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

“Coming back to this predicament we were in, we wanted to finish off the season on a good note,” safety Isaiah Johnson said. “That really drives us.”

With the win, the Jackets claim at least a share of the ACC Coastal Division title. They could receive even better news as early as Sunday. Miami, having earned bowl eligibility Saturday with a 40-9 win over South Florida, has said it will announce its plans on a possible postseason ban in anticipation of NCAA sanctions after it becomes eligible.

17 straight years of bowling (tied with the dWags for fourth longest active streak in the country) ACC Championship or not, that’s something to be proud of.

Team you came out and played one of the most complete games of the year , no turnovers , long possession drives and converted 15 of 18 first downs and both 4th downs. I was happy especially for our senior QB who carried the team today and CPJ called his best game this season. Now let’s get ready for a really good UGA team and play loose and light out next week , who knows it may be time for the series to turn around and I only say that because it has been a “very bizarre ” season . I watched some of the mutts game and without the chop block call right before GS was down inside the UGA 15 to go ahead, that game could have played out differently today.

THWG !!!!!!!!!!!

Very glad to see Tevin do well – he is a credit to tech. No he is not a great athelete but he has given everything he had and has been a great representative of the school – coach never had to worry about him on Saturday night.

Robbie “Tiny Beast” Godhigh for Heisman. Guy makes plays like Megatron.

Why we won today:
1. Long sustained drives by the offense… Washington had probably one of his best games of his career, appropriately on senior day… 3 TDs and 0 INTs, and great management of the triple option offense, except he should have pitched a bit more. Only one boneheaded play (that illegal forward pass) and great ball security.
2. Fewer missed tackles on defense.
3. More D-line pressure.
4. Rod Sweeting had an amazing game.
5. Defensive adjustments at the half, just like last week.
6. Critical stops by Attaouchu & Barnes on 3rd down in the 2nd half.
7. Robbie Godhigh
8. Ray Beno’s critical clutch play to get the first down. We’ll need a ton of those next week.

Things we can improve upon:
1. Kickoff distance and height. I understand Tanner doesn’t have the strongest leg, but he’s consistent. Hopefully we get Scully and Justin Moore back next week.
2. Overall Defense. It was much improved, especially in the 2nd half as Duke got desperate, and thank goodness we played all 4 quarters with intensity.
3. Vad Lee can improve his game.

The OL was able to block Duke.

Next week the OL must block UGA or it will be a long day.

Also next week a very unusual thing happens. UGA, with a bid to the conference championship game, will have 100% of its fans ready to give that up if they can just beat the worst GT teams in 15 years. Only at UGA does the Conference not matter.

Proud to see that this team overcame adversity and kept playing hard to make something of a disappointing season. They could have folded their tents after the MTSU debacle but they didn’t quit. That’s an impressive show of character.

We can debate all day what needs to happen to improve the team performance, but no one can say that this team doesn’t have guts.

I have to give Coach Kelly and the staff some kudos for making the defensive adjustments at halftime since he’s taken over as acting Defensive Coordinator. I realize the first half of games seem a bit “iffy” at times, but he does get the guys together at the half and they come out and play an inspired, effective, rest of the game. If they can keep that up and the offense can keep going with their “roll,” then the Jackets can beat anybody.

The time of possession doesn’t matter – what’s important is that we scored on almost every possession. If we scored quicker, this week’s game would look like last week’s.

Love fest at Bobby Dodd Stadium today.

The military/Tech connection was in full view. So many great student-athletes that went into distinguished service in every theater of operation in the 20th century.

It got really electric in the 4th, and seeing the students and cheerleaders dancing in sync after the game was awesome.

I can’t believe I’m not gonna see Tevin, Orwin Smith, and many others, on the flats ever again.

Seniors, if any of you guys are reading this- we love y’all. Couldn’t be prouder to be a Jacket today.

Who would of thought that GT would keep the bowl streak alive?? What a chaotic season!!! Hope we can keep the win streak going.. UGA is a tough team, but beatable. Any given Saturday. If Miami has any chance of the NCAA not probing too much they would be smart by self imposing a bowl restriction. However; Thug U is too stupid and money hungry to do that. Just have to hope that Duke can beat them. If Duke would beat them, then they would do the bowl restriction. However; I am happy just knowing that my beloved Jackets will get to play in a bowl game. :)

I’m very pleased my Jackets won today, and here’s hoping they finish the season with a six-game winning streak. But if that’s not to be, winning next week’s game would be satisfaction a-plenty – even if it’s against the most overrated team in the Top 25. Congrats to all the Jackets. Kudos especially to Robert Godhigh, who pound for pound is one of the best players and hardest hitters on the field. And hats off to Chris Tanner, who may not have the strongest leg but is consistent, and highly worthy to wear the uniform of so proud an institution as Georgia Tech. Thanks for walking-on, Chris; you’ll definitely walk off a winner. Way to go, too, Ray Beno for snagging that tip and keeping an important drive alive.

Team made some plays today and the D stopped them in the 2nd half. Glad to see TW have a good game on Sr, day. Too bad Golden didn’t have a return TD to go with his INT. Those sacks on the last Duke possession were great. Gonna have to figure out some way to get pressure on Murray next week.

Dawgs be the definition “truth hurts”.

I’ll just let a paid journalist do the talking, Stewart Mandel from Sports Illustrated:

“In all my travels, I’m not sure I’ve ever come across a fan base whose self-perception is so far from reality.”

Your guys’ “Truth Hurts” moments even offend veteran journalists.

1990 was far more recent than 1980.

You guys should be thinking about Bama and the MNC. Why troll here? We don’t stand a chance. Focus on Alabama. GATA…Alabama rear end that is…

Wow! I guess that trumps 10 out the last 11 and 25 of the last 32..1980 is less recent but in 1990 the title was split between Tech and Colorado. I’m sure you didnt intend to leave that fact out..

GT Joe

November 17th, 2012

Maybe CPJ is trying to surprise uga by starting vad, and didn’t play him today to minimize uga’s tape of vad, to make it harder to prepare for him? For some reason,I doubt he is thinking along these lines…

It’s fine he played Tevin on senior day, but I hope he doesn’t give the senior one last shot at uga “out of respect”. We’re trying to win…
