1. Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson still wasn’t saying Tuesday who the Yellow Jackets’ starting quarterback will be Saturday against Duke.
But it wasn’t difficult to at least figure out which way he was leaning.
“The way we’re doing it has been working pretty well,” Johnson said Tuesday, speaking of the rotation with starter Tevin Washington and backup Vad Lee. “Unless something crazy happens in practice, that’s probably the way we’ll do it. We’ll see.”
The past two weeks, Washington started the first two series and then Lee played the next two. Against Maryland Nov. 3, they continued to rotate in that pattern. Against North Carolina this past Saturday, Lee played the rest of the way after leading the offense to touchdowns in his first two possessions. Tech set a school record for points in an ACC game in its 68-50 defeat of the Tar Heels.
“Vad’s got a long time to play football here, and if he plays as well as he played on Saturday and that kind of thing, then he’s going to play the majority of the snaps,” Johnson said.
Johnson noted, though, that Washington actually graded 20 points higher than Lee in the North Carolina game. Besides fighting fatigue, Lee made mistakes in reads and pre-snap checks, but either he or his teammates often managed to overcome them.
Lee “made a lot of mistakes he can learn from, but the bottom line is he found a way to get the ball in the end zone,” quarterbacks and B-backs coach Brian Bohannon said.
For his part, Lee professed to not care about starting.
“Tevin is our starter,” Lee said. “That’s how it’s been all year. That’s my mindset going into the game.”
2. The ACC indicated Sunday that, in the event of a three-way tie between Miami, North Carolina and Tech, that Tech could win a tiebreaker and play in the ACC championship game if Virginia were to finish fourth in the Coastal Division. That remains true, but there is no way for Virginia to finish fourth in the division in that scenario, the ACC confirmed Tuesday.
In either of two possible situations in which the Hurricanes, Tar Heels and Jackets finish tied at 5-3, the fourth-place team would be Duke. In that case, by the league’s tiebreaker rules, Miami would be the Coastal representative. Tech’s only on-field course to reach the ACC championship game is for the Jackets to beat Duke and Duke to beat Miami Nov. 24. There is still the possibility that Miami will self-impose a postseason ban in response to its NCAA investigation and eliminate itself from contention, in which case Tech would win simply by beating Duke.
3. A week after blocking 80 defenders to the ground against Maryland in 60 offensive plays, the Jackets stacked up 100 against North Carolina on 79 plays. Johnson said they were the highest totals since he came to Tech before the 2008 season.
Against the Tar Heels, the offensive line had 69. A-back Robbie Godhigh, who scored touchdowns on three consecutive touches in the third quarter, had 13.
Said offensive line coach Mike Sewak of the linemen, “They’re just playing like they should play.”
4. B-back Marcus Allen, who is redshirting, could switch to linebacker, Johnson said. He said a decision would be made either after the season or going into spring practice. He is one of 14 13 true freshmen out of the 17-member signing class who is redshirting. At his Tuesday news conference, Johnson praised several, including defensive lineman Patrick Gamble, linebackers Beau Hankins and Tyler Stargel and wide receiver Micheal Summers, among others.
Said Johnson, “There’s a pretty good nucleus of guys that we’re redshirting that we feel good about.”
5. Offensive tackle Will Jackson is likely to be doubtful for Saturday’s game, Johnson said. Players are also dealing with a flu bug.
“Hopefully it’s early enough in the week that we’ll get em back,” Johnson said. “You hope that you don’t lose anybody else. When that stuff starts, you never know.”
Thanks for reading. I’ll have more up Wednesday morning.
In case you missed it…
No chance, after all, for Tech in three-way Coastal tie

Would Vad have made a difference between Tech and Duke common opponents???
Maybe the “UNC” Vad might have but he didnt exist at the start of the season—
GT and Duke have 3 common opponents–VT, Clemson, UVA
Same result — lost to VT and Clemson and both beat UVA
Scores VT 41- Duke 20 VT 20 – GT 17
Clem 56 -Duke 20 Clem47- GT 31
UVA 17- Duke 42 UVA20- GT 56
Totals Opp 196 Duke 82 Opp191 GT 104
This is all TW QB scores but not sure Vad makes much difference in these scores, maybe some.
Both Defenses are about even on common opponents
GT has scored 22 more points vs same opponents or say 1 TD/game
I believe last years game was 38-31 Tech W in Durham, and they are some better.
Difference maker is Vad keeping us on the field and scoring every possession. 50+ points! Hold the ball!
Duke may put 30+ on us again–Turnovers and penalties could kill us.

Just figured it out as I was typing. It’s the punter, right?
Let’s get bowl eligible Jackets, and get Lee about fifteen extra practices and an additional game to get ready for 13′.

No mention of Francis Kallon ?? It’s funny cause Anthony Autry is a 2 star and he didn’t get redshirted initially. This team should be interesting with Gotis in the middle and possibly Kallon & Gamble on the edges, I’ve heard Gamble and Kallon are mountains..
Tevin should start, its senior’s day right..
Duke will not be an easy out they have a good offense, that spreads the field and attacks. For GT to win it’s going to have to be another shoot out.

As to fuzzybee78’s comment—that’s why they should sub the QB position. We have two good QBs and the QB position runs more than all the A backs combined. IT should be obvious that a winded QB doesn’t throw as nearly well as one who’s not. If you have TW and he gets a 20 yd gain, then put in Vad for a couple of plays—run the pistol, maybe go no huddle—keep the defense guessing and off balance. Same if Vad gets a big run, bring in TW. We shouldn’t commit ourselves to alternating series—make it situational and keep’em fresh!

A word to Tech fans from a fan that has followed Tech for sixty plus years. I love their fight song. The best. I love their schools which try to educate their student athletes. I have loved supported and buried several pets that I loved like my children. They gave me everything they had. They were loyal, loving and trusted me without question. Many things in animals and people in our lives have given me warm and loving memories. Not one of my dogs ever won anytiing their names were ever noted in any publication. They were all five star members of my family. And the warm and loving memories that keep filling my spirit are immeasurable. CPJ is not very bright.
Vad Lee is clearly better than Washington, and should have been playing all season.
I will never understand the stupid coach-jock mentality of playing the “senior” because he’s put his time him in, and “earned it”.
Gailey did the same stupid thing with Reggie Ball.
Hope it doesn’t come down to a 1 posession game, and we lose with Washington having played the first series, with no points to show for his “Senior Day” pony show start.

But now, vs. Duke, a good team, the biggest MUST WIN of the season, you all want to start Tevin because he’s a senior?

@GT14 just to make sure you understand that was 100 blocks that put “defenders on the ground” not pancakes. A pancake is to knock the defender backwards to the point that he falls backwards and lands on his butt. When a blocker cuts the legs out from under a defender and he falls to the ground in any direction that counts in “defenders to the ground” score

George Stein, your 10:16 post is EXACTLY why I believe CPJ isn’t looking to “play” someone for the sake of playing them….at the time that Nesbitt was Vad Lee’s age….he started because he was the best option to start. Vad Lee has, obviously, made great strides this season towards becoming trustworthy with this offense and is being rewarded for his results. TW has been a warrior for this team and as CPJ sees fit, he’ll get the start with VL coming in to provide a different rhythm. Either way….GO TECH!!!

Regarding the cut block, there is no merit for getting rid of the practice. Players are hurt MORE by solid tackles than they are by cut blocks. Are we going to take tackling out of the game? No! I read the blog about the uga players whining about cut blocks….they sounded like wusses! Bless their little hearts….cut blocking will be around for years to come.
