1. Coming off the bench in a rotation with Georgia Tech quarterback Tevin Washington, Vad Lee led the Yellow Jackets to 55 points in Saturday’s 68-50 win over North Carolina. Coach Paul Johnson, who has not named a starter prior to the game for the past two games, will apparently continue that practice.
“We’ll have (a starter),” he said.
Tech plays Duke Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium. The game could be decisive in determining the ACC Coastal Division title.
Saturday, Washington started his 27th consecutive game and led Tech to one touchdown in two possessions. As was the plan, Lee came in for the third series to play two possessions. Tech drove a total of 150 yards for two touchdowns with Lee at quarterback, and he played the rest of the way.
He was 6-for-10 passing for 169 yards, one touchdown and one interception. He ran 23 times for 112 yards with two touchdowns. He made one critical error, an interception returned 34 yards for a North Carolina touchdown. However, he drove the Jackets to seven touchdowns and two field goals in 10 consecutive possessions, not including a one-play possession that ended the first half.
“There are a lot of things he needs to work on, but he made a lot of plays,” Johnson said. “He created a lot of excitement and enthusiasm and did some really good things.”
2. Despite participating in the highest-scoring ACC game in league history, no offensive players from either Tech or North Carolina were named ACC players of the week. Two other Jackets were honored, however. Inside linebacker Quayshawn Nealy was selected co-linebacker of the week for his two sacks, a career high, and six tackles. Returner Jamal Golden was named specialist of the week for his 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown and 230 yards of kickoff returns, the latter a school single-game record.
With a kickoff return touchdown three games ago that broke the school’s 14-year drought, Golden is one of two Tech players (Drew Hill is the other) to return two kickoffs for touchdowns in one season and one of four (Gary Hill, Dez White and Hill are the others) with two kick returns for touchdowns in a career.
They are the third and fourth Tech players to be named ACC players of the week.
Tech coaches named A-back Robbie Godhigh, defensive end Izaan Cross and kicker Chris Tanner the offensive, defensive and special teams players of the week, respectively. Godhigh scored three touchdowns – all in the third quarter – on three consecutive touches. The NCAA record for touchdowns in a quarter is four. Cross’ only tackle was a sack and he made one of the plays of the game, tipping and intercepting a screen pass that Tech converted into a field goal. Tanner, a senior walk-on, made both of his field goals and all eight of his extra-point tries. The field-goal tries were his first since he was a senior at Norcross High in 2007.
Lee was named one of eight “Stars of the Week” by the Manning Award. Fans can vote for Lee on the Sugar Bowl Facebook page as the top performer of the week.
3. Johnson said he doubted that Scully, who suffered an undisclosed injury Saturday, will be available for Duke, though Justin Moore could return from his injury, also undisclosed. Johnson chose to go with Tanner over Scully on field goals and extra points for the North Carolina. Tanner took over kickoff duty in the second half.
4. The kickoff time for the Tech-Georgia game has been set for noon on Nov. 24. The game will be broadcast on ESPN. It’s the same time and carrier as last year’s Georgia game. … Tech was a 13-point favorite over Duke on Monday evening.

It’s difficult to name Vad the starter because Tevin has been a terrific soldier and may add some value in experience. However, it was difficult to watch the game Saturday and come away thinking that Vad wasn’t the better player.
It is also important to note that Josh Nesbitt – for whom I still hold a very strong man-crush – started in Johnson’s offense the same year Vad is now.

UGA grad– i am laughing too but UGA hasnt beaten to many good teams this year. Conference opponents that UGA won against have a 15-33. Take FLA out of the formula and the 6 turn overs and UGA record against conference teams with a 8-32 record. three teams have no conference wins. Tech and the coastal division hasnt been much better. Lets face UGA did beat Buffalo.

I have been an early outspoken advocate to have Vad playing much sooner rather than what has happened prior to the Maryland game. That stated, Tevin is a senior, a leader (a Captain of the team) and on the verge of breaking an ACC rushing TD record set by another Tech quarterback. It will be Senior Day at Tech Saturday and Tevin deserves the chance to start and lead the offensive charge. I am sure Vad will get more of a chance to shine too. Now to the point–Tech Defense, this had better be your game.

@KG – don’t forget that UGA also has exactly one win against an offense better than 50th in the country. That was against a hapless Tennessee team, and only a 7-point victory against a team that is 0-6 in OT. Vandy and ULL scored more against UF than UGA did. I have no fear for UGA this year at all.
All that said, this team needs to focus 100% against Duke. That needs to be a win with us distancing ourselves in the 4th quarter. Forcing 2 punts per half = win!

Start TW, then bring in Vad both for Duke and UGA. Need both of the mready to play and their head in the game.
Still wish we’d run more pistol with Vad–I think his vision of the field and the pass or scramble option that he possesses is better suited from the pistol formation. Run some different option plays from the pistol too—give our opponents more things to worry about.
The D needs to get serious in finding a pass rush–Duke and UGA are very similar in the passing—ranked nearly the same nationally and we need to get pressure on the QB or it will be a long game.

I’ve got to agree with Tokyo Jacket about UGA — they are not at all intimidating this year (they have only really looked decent in one game so far) and have done their usual routine of building a good record against a bunch of creampuffs, which includes the vast majorityy of the SEC this year. But we have next week to worry about the Trembling Chihuahuas — right now just focus on what is important and BEAT DUKE!!! (And I’m sure that the dwags are overjoyed to know that they are of significantly less importance to us than Duke is, lol).

Congrats on the oppurtunity to be Coastal champs bugs. Agreed, VL is the better of the two QB’s by far in my eye’s and any coach should want his best players on the field irregardless of their seniority. Not sure why, at this point, why CPJ wouldn’t just go ahead and name VL the starter and get it over with. I see a much improved GT squad coming around despite their defense and I could see them presenting a tough challenge to FSU in the big game. Tech seems to have figured out now if we can’t stop’em, outscore’em…I still see my Dawgs winning our game against you guys but even not knowing what the spread will be I would be willing to take GT and the points in a shoot out. Cant get a gauge on this one. Gotta play the triple option 2 straight weeks and hope the game against GSU gives us a heads up on GT…Could be 60 -45 or maybe 42-40 against GT…who knows…Good luck against a now formidable Duke team and Go Dawgs!

Hard to tell on TV, but it did seem like the D got a little energy from the O’s success in the 2nd half last week. We do need to find a way to get more pressure on the QB. Both Duke and Murray will pick us apart if allowed to stay in the pocket and pick out receivers. Our O is going to need to be very efficient in both games.

An odd observation – I think when the UGA AD scheduled G-Southern before us he thought he was being really clever – warm up for the annual Tech game with a somewhat weaker team that runs a similar offense so the Defense really has two weeks to be prepared. Only thing is, Bama is the team laughing, while the dawgs are preparing for triple option offenses for two straight weeks they can’t afford to focus on bama for the SEC CG

Island Jacket, since it’s senior day TW will definitely start and that’s not a bad thing. In fact, the Washington & Lee tandem has proven pretty effective recently ……….. and thankfully PJ finally figured out that VL can play. Nice seeing him play himself to the top, man that guy can throw! Next year, the next year and VL’s senior year with all these young wide receivers, he’ll be setting passing records for PJ’s run first option offense and the running game will prove prolific, too, since a strong passing game will open up the running game even more than normal. Can you imagine having to defense VL by the time he’s a junior & a senior? Now if we can only develop a reasonable defense ……………………..

The way this season has played out….ANYTHING is possible! I could see us losing the next two games and I could see us winning the next two games! Time will tell….I left my crystal ball at the cleaners this week…APPARENTLY it had a number of smudges on it!
By the way….was uga around in 1800?

GT JOE a few fans on this blog may not care about wins. More so about who practices well and does the best in class. To bad that don’t account for wins. It’s like the no senior left behind rule. They don’t want to hurt TW’s feelings after all he as done for GT, like lose every big game. What a tough decision this must be for coach no brainer.

The funny part is VAD engineered 68 points and listening to some people on here you would think PJ was out there in pads running QB. It is the season that could have been.

same way vad engineered the defense to give up just 14 in the 2nd half.
It’s called the The Vad Effect. In short, Vad’s energy is contagious.

it’s a stupid recognition, but it kinda shows the silly politics going on with the coaching staff… it’s almost like they don’t want a freshman to be the star, or they don’t want to show up tevin.
I don’t get it.

I finally agree with you on something. You don’t get it.
How could you possibly know if there are politics involved? Godhigh scored 3 TD’s with one being an outstanding catch of an ill advised throw.
Why don’t you change your blog name to VL Joe? You seem to be more concerned about him than the team.

re pass rush. Both the UNC and Duke guys utilize a lot of very quick release, shorter than normal passes that would render a normal blitz not very effective. By the time the blitzer or nomal rush guy got there, the ball would already be gone. Note….utilize a lot…not always. Guess the real problem is trying to determine when there will not be short routes. Also guess that is one of the reasons most of us are not D coordinators.
Johnson was smart enough last week (not stubborn as some of us previously thought) to stick with the hot hand. I would guess he would do that again…would you not Joe?

GT Joe, Godhigh did have a great game as well.
Tevin did take us right down the field and scored with a nice 25 yard run. I’m OK with him getting the first series but am also OK with Vad just taking over from here on out. It is obviously his team now.
It doesn’t matter since CPJ doesn’t listen to us when deciding who will play. All I really know is that I will be there cheering this Saturday and again in Athens in 2 weeks. Yes, this is a season of missed opportunities but there is still some opportunities left there. Let’s go get em.

I don’t think Will Jackson is going to play Saturday; just my personal opinion. Also, I expect Tevin to start on Senior Day as he is a Senior and deserves it. He’ll probably get the first few reps and then Vad will take over, like he did against Carolina.

The swamp (cess pool) was there before the school was. The University of Georgie was incorporated (chartered) by the state legislature on January 27, 1785. The 1st graduation class was awarded there diplomas on May 31, 1804. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Georgia

This just in Tevin will get the start at point guard as well, soon as football season is over. His 5 years seniority has earned him the starting job over Mfon, regardless if he can play a lick of basketball what so ever. Maybe he will be able to connect on some passes in hoops.

GT and Duke have 3 common opponents–VT, Clemson, UVA
Same result — lost to VT and Clemson and both beat UVA
Scores VT 41- Duke 20 VT 20 – GT 17
Clem 56 -Duke 20 Clem47- GT 31
UVA 17- Duke 42 UVA20- GT 56
Totals Opp 196 Duke 82 Opp191 GT 104
This is all TW QB scores but not sure Vad makes much difference in these scores, maybe some.
Both Defenses are about even on common opponents
GT has scored 22 more points vs same opponents or say 1 TD/game
I believe last years game was 38-31 Tech W in Durham, and they are some better.
Difference maker is Vad keeping us on the field and scoring every possession. 50+ points! Hold the ball!
Duke may put 30+ on us again–Turnovers and penalties could kill us.

Vad certainly appears to be a superior QB, nice passer, quicker feet and stronger runner. I can see VL as an AA one day but he needs to smooth it out. TW, right now, just looks a little smoother, not better just smoother. I hope he starts senior day and has a great show but I believe we need VL at his best to beat Dookies and Ga. He will not be at his best ridin the pine. Where has Tanner been all year? Was good to see SDays playing, pulling for Smith to have a great day.
NOTE to Coach: pat someone on the back and give’em a smile, please.
