Tech outlasts UNC, 68-50 (yes, 68-50)

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Georgia Tech and North Carolina combined to score more points than in any ACC league game ever, but it concluded in typical Yellow Jackets’ fashion.
A clock-grinding, will-defeating drive closed out North Carolina, buttoning up a wild 68-50 win for the Jackets Saturday at Kenan Stadium. Besides the combined points record, it’s the most points Tech has scored in an ACC game.
Quarterback Vad Lee, who entered the game in the third series and never came out, led the Jackets to scores on eight of nine possessions, not counting a half-ending kneeldown. Seven of them were touchdowns, three scored by A-back Robby Godhigh in the third quarter.
In a game that featured five lead changes, Tech took the lead for good with 9:52 to play in the third quarter with a four-yard run by Godhigh.
Taking control of the ball with 10:57 to play in the game with the score 65-50, the Jackets consumed six minutes of clock and finished with a 34-yard field goal by Chris Tanner.
The Georgia Tech-North Carolina game included almost 1,100 yards of total offense, a kickoff return for a touchdown, an interception return for a touchdown and 17 touchdowns total.
Despite the unbelievable score, it was two defensive stops that turned the game in Tech’s favor. In the third quarter, defensive end Izaan Cross intercepted a screen pass that Tech converted into a Tanner field goal for a 44-36 lead. On North Carolina’s next possession, coach Larry Fedora elected to try a fake punt on 4th and 10 from the Tar Heels’ 25-yard line that failed. On the next play, Godhigh took a toss 27 yards for a score that gave Tech a 51-36 lead, which, even on this wild afternoon, proved sufficient.
Tech improves to 5-5 overall and 4-3 in the ACC. UNC fell to 6-4 and 3-3. The Jackets have now beaten the Tar Heels four years in a row, eight of nine and 14 of 16.

@jeffjacket you may be right. This game may have been what gets this team moving again. Seems that the defense stepped up, although late and fed off the offensive effort. All that needs to happen is the defense needs to get going with more enthusiam.

If you do the math, 16 touchdowns were scored, not 17. There were 2 field goals thrown in there. Great job by the offense and a super win on the road considering how the season has gone. One consideration for the defense giving up 50 points…When you score that often and that quickly, the other team gets a lot of possessions!

@ UGA grad……the mutt defense may indeed be better than the Tech defense, but they’re still not very good. Southern will not beat the mutts, but they WILL expose the UGA defense for what it is. And Tech will learn from that more than UGA will learn from Southern’s offense.

@Rick James nor will Mark Richt. Right has done less with more talent than any coach I know of. If he cannot win the SEC or a NC with the talent he gets its not very good.

Great win by tech today. Vad played lights out. O line was good. Tevin will start next week vs duke though (senior). The duke game is a big game. Good mix of run and pass today. The offense looked good. Go Jackets

NC ran a 4-2-5 defense. Only 2 linebackers make it hard to stop pitch. They still executed though.

That TD catch Godhgh made was awesome. Haven’t seen a GT player make that kind of reception since Calvin. And Vad breaking tackles and eluding defenders in the backfield was amazing. We really have some talent at the skill postions on O. And how about Golden’s 100 yd kickoff return. That guy is fast.

tech fan, I think now its choose your poison on defense with Vad. Stack everyone in the box and he will burn you with the pass, run a 4 2 5 and they will run the ball on the ground. This was a P.J. ideal situation with Vad at the control. Also Vad did not run the true option today, he will get better.

Great win Jackets! The blocking was the best I’ve seen this year and the offense looked great. The intensity and execution has been much better the last two games – we need to keep it up. We do have some athletes, just need to keep working on D. Fundamentals, fundamentals, fundamentals. Congratulations to the players and coaches – we can finish strong! THWG!

68 points! A good D team, with two weeks to prepare. This O is on fire! Keep it up! D is getting better, that RB for UNC is very good. Looking forward to Duke, should be a real challenge for a change. Puppies trembling, yes, that game is not a gimme any more for the Mutts.
After the last couple years of the team falling apart at the end of the season, this is a bonus!
If we have a chance to go to the ACCCG, I think FSU is in for a game!
