CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Georgia Tech and North Carolina combined to score more points than in any ACC league game ever, but it concluded in typical Yellow Jackets’ fashion.
A clock-grinding, will-defeating drive closed out North Carolina, buttoning up a wild 68-50 win for the Jackets Saturday at Kenan Stadium. Besides the combined points record, it’s the most points Tech has scored in an ACC game.
Quarterback Vad Lee, who entered the game in the third series and never came out, led the Jackets to scores on eight of nine possessions, not counting a half-ending kneeldown. Seven of them were touchdowns, three scored by A-back Robby Godhigh in the third quarter.
In a game that featured five lead changes, Tech took the lead for good with 9:52 to play in the third quarter with a four-yard run by Godhigh.
Taking control of the ball with 10:57 to play in the game with the score 65-50, the Jackets consumed six minutes of clock and finished with a 34-yard field goal by Chris Tanner.
The Georgia Tech-North Carolina game included almost 1,100 yards of total offense, a kickoff return for a touchdown, an interception return for a touchdown and 17 touchdowns total.
Despite the unbelievable score, it was two defensive stops that turned the game in Tech’s favor. In the third quarter, defensive end Izaan Cross intercepted a screen pass that Tech converted into a Tanner field goal for a 44-36 lead. On North Carolina’s next possession, coach Larry Fedora elected to try a fake punt on 4th and 10 from the Tar Heels’ 25-yard line that failed. On the next play, Godhigh took a toss 27 yards for a score that gave Tech a 51-36 lead, which, even on this wild afternoon, proved sufficient.
Tech improves to 5-5 overall and 4-3 in the ACC. UNC fell to 6-4 and 3-3. The Jackets have now beaten the Tar Heels four years in a row, eight of nine and 14 of 16.

Godhigh was the most valuable player today and a close 2nd would have to be the O-line. Tech beat a good football team today. Get ready for the Dookies at home in a week.

“I honestly would rather not go to the ACC Championship this year.”
Because it would not be in the team’s best interest? Maybe Georgia would like to decline the opportunity to go to the SEC championship because it is too much of a risk, also? B.S., man.

Tech’s defense is awful. UGA will probably hang 50 on them. Once again the Dawgs will beat the Jackets.

Let me first say… :I was wrong” Although… UNC rung 50 points up on the defense. The offense was rolling.. 68 points is friggin awesome!!! Nice win!! With that and a win versus Duke, we will have our streak of bowl games continue. This was a great game for Vad Lee. He out shined TW in any and every way. No way TW had the arm complete 1/2 the passes Vad did. Yes… Vad made some freshmen mistakes. But, there was no doubt seeing the talent that he has. Give him a couple of years to refine that offense and GT will be a team to deal with for sure. I still don’t think we got the fire power to beat UGA this year. But hey… the Jackets can keep proving me wrong.

Not surprised our D gave up 50 — absolutely shocked the UNC D gave up 68 with 2 weeks to prepare. Obviously, Vad is the passing threat this offense needs to fully be awesome. Some observations: 1) Drummond is far to SLOW to be on the field His personal foul penalty for a late hit out-of-bounds was his 3rd strike for me ( drug suspension and boating DWI means he sits). 2) This team sorely lacks senior leadership. In fact, TECH’s seniors make the most bone-headed plays imaginable. To wit: Tevin’s INT in our first and only OT possession against VT; Orwin Smiths bizarre safety against Miami that not only gave them 2 points but, possession as well after the customary shanked punt by Sean Poole and, Sweeting’s offside today with UNC inside their 15 and facing a 3rd and 6 (what a dumb-ass play). 3) THWG!!!!

@ UGA grad……the mutt defense may indeed be better than the Tech defense, but they’re still not very good. Southern will not beat the mutts, but they WILL expose the UGA defense for what it is. And Tech will learn from that more than UGA will learn from Southern’s offense.

Florida has improved tremendously since the Georgia loss. They stomped Mizzou 14-7 last week, and they absolutely buried Louisiana-Lafayette 27-20 today on a last-play punt block for a TD.

The ChickWAWAS were not scared of Buffalo, Mizzou, kentSucky or So Carolina either and they had to play a tough game against all those teams.

Delbert D.,
UF plays an “SEC Schedule” though, so you’ve gotta consider them as #1 if A&M beats BAMA today. But then again, A&M is now “SEC” so maybe they jump to #1 with a win today. Or maybe UGA. After all, the Dawgs got one helluva tough, SEC, opponent today!
UGA’s played 2 good teams this season. They’re 1-1 vs. those teams, and we’re supposed to believe they’re #5 in the NCAA? Ain’t that rich.

Congrats to the Jackets. The QB is the key! Look at Navy this year: 1-3 and down to Air Force big in the 2H when they put in a Freshman (Reynolds) who can run and throw (the Senior he replaced is a “run only” clone of Tevin Washington). With Reynolds, they pulled the AF game out in OT and are now 6-3 (but in a tough one today at Troy). Vad looks like the real deal. Pray he doesn’t get hurt!

@ UGA grad…..what the hell has last year got to do with this year. The mutts actually had a semblance of a defense last year….not so much this year. And Tech has a QB who can and does complete passes. Not saying Tech will win, but the mutts are in for a lot more of a struggle than they think they are.
