Peterson names AD search committee

Georgia Tech graduate and booster Stephen Zelnak will chair a seven-person search committee that will recommend candidates to school president G.P. “Bud” Peterson for the athletic director position. Also on the committee is former football player Roddy Jones.

Zelnak, a 1969 graduate, is also a member of the Georgia Tech Foundation Board of Trustees. The Tech basketball practice facility and the football team meeting room are named in his honor.

Other committee members are:

Sue Ann Allen, associate dean for Faculty Development in the College of Engineering and the school’s NCAA faculty athletics representative

Lynn Durham, Georgia Tech assistant vice president, office of the president (ex-officio)

Patrick “Pat” McKenna, vice president for Legal Affairs and Risk Management (ex-officio)

Steven Swant, Georgia Tech executive vice president for Administration and Finance

Al Trujillo, past chair of the Georgia Tech Alumni Association, member of the Georgia Tech Foundation Board of Trustees and the College of Engineering Advisory Board.

The school has set up a website for the Tech community to solicit input on the search process, here. Peterson will name a search firm to serve as a consultant in coming weeks.

Glad to see Roddy getting involved in this. He could do nothing but help PR in this process.

I like the Roddy Jones…………………I have been saying for months the ACC needs to get PENN ST and RODDY JONES needs to be put in the ADMIN of tech and to pay for him to for to another college to get a Doctorate that will help him LEAD TECH as the AD…………….

BUT Hey I am just CRAZY that way…………….
I think in 3-4 years…………IF………..GOOSE is doing well and ready he needs to come HOME to be the TECH Head Coach……..Look at WHO he knows and worked with and under.

I’m Just CRAZY that WAY…………………………GO JACKETS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Needs to be a TECH man if at all possible. Someone who will take on the challenges that GT provides as motivation and does not see the position as a”stepping stone”.

No disrespect for anyone on the search committee. However, when outside consultants are added, the number of individual impressions and opinions as to who will be the best candidate or even the short list multiplies to the point it becomes guesswork. I hope whoever gets the job will be someone who will stay and not leave for more $$$$.

@ Toe…..I disagree, at least to a point. I think we would be better with someone not so familiar with the way things have been done at Tech; someone who can bring in new and fresh ideas. But he also can’t be the type that DRAD was, who came in with new ideas and (like the required ticket-buying contribution) just crams them down our throats all at once. I wonder if DRAD will get rid of IPTAY at Clemson the way he got rid of the AT fund at Tech; those folks won’t like that at all. I figure if Tech just serves as a stepping stone, then so be it. If he does a good job here and somebody else wants him, then just be happy with the good job he did while here and then find another one to pick right up where he left off.

So, when does the search committee for a new football coach form? Or will that primarily be the responsibility of the new AD?

By the way, George O’Leary for AD at Georgia Tech.

Zelnak and I were in high school together. He is an excellent retired executive and more important, a gentleman with outstanding integrity and character.. He will find the right AD that “understands” GT.

“Super”, there is no reason the CORRECT TECH man will do things the same way they have always been done. I would think anyone in that position would bring new and fresh ideas. I just think it needs to be someone who truly values what the Institute is all about, understands the challenges thoroughly, and is in it for the “long haul”. Kind of a Homer Rice type. Just MHO.

Just name the “hill” and all the academia so they can bury Tech football and the tradition and history that football brought to this once proud institue. Hope most of the professors and administrators choke on the calculus books as they kill GT football. Hope they all eat s**t and dye. GT is completely irrevelant in sports now and thats the way Bud and his cronies want it.

don’t care if he’s a tech graduate or not, as long as he understands part of his job is to be the face of the atheletic department and he’ll need a good team to market the h@ll out of georgia tech in the atlanta metro area.

a couple of highway billboards won’t get it done.

reach out to groups in the community and offer reduced price tickets to get young people and families interested who otherwise wouldn’t care about tech one way or the other.

@ Toe…..the problem is in finding the CORRECT Tech man; I’m not sure one exists. I like the idea of a Homer Rice type, and Homer wasn’t a Tech man. I also like what w ww said. DRAD NEVER really reached out to the public, and that is something that desperately needs to be done, and not just the public in Atlanta, way down to South Georgia too.

John Salley- get seats in seats, link to niche networks like BET for side deals, wonderfull presence one on one on the plane on up to national TV a person most athletes and coaches would look up to. how not to blow a gift on an NBA (or nfl) lifestyle, instant recruiting and fundraising benefits in LA Chicago Detroit, Brooklyn, Georgia
Ralph Freidgen, plenty of lessons learned of what not to do
Bill Curry- nice link to Centers for Disease Control in this football injury and risk averse focused world
Pipe dreams
Doug Rhodes- Shifitng the balance of power, unequalled experience with managing coaches and dealing with poor execution in an organization, equal to the task, likely to improve every sports use of technology
G O’Leary- no auto exit to at a notre dame job, a wiser man than the one who left..
Ken Whisenhunt- Too bad he is already the $6M man
Joe Gibbs- A multi sport multi role manager, won’t burn out himself or his staff, invokes devine providence, a finisher with the hardware to show for it and making the right hard choices with personnel (except keeping pepper “we need to perfect the veer” rodgers)

Any others that might build GT a soccer, field hockey or crew team without putting core sports on and under the bus?

Ken,

I’m confused as to why Tech is not hiring an executive serach firm to find candidates. Typically, the $50k they charge becomes worth it when you consider the magnitude of the hire.

Radakovitch left Tech with an annual debt burden of about $14 million which is about one third of GTAA’s budget. What “person on the rise” will want to take the AD job with that debt?
It will hurt tech for many, many years, and is an AD career killer..

I think it’s even worse than that. Wait until the new GTAA annual report comes out next year. I suspect one reason DRad was so eager to leave was because he saw the financial brick wall dead ahead. He wanted to be well clear of the mess he helped cause.

William Casey you make my point much more concise. GT is IRELEVANTin football for this simple fact. I was in Grant field fo the first time at 7 years old in 1960. Oleary was given a few but a few exceptions and we beat uga 3 years in a row. Sorry it demeaned your sheepskin so much, what a joke. Have loved GT all my life as my father had what I thought we the good sense to raise me that way. As far ar relevant, when has Chris Fowler or any TV sportscaster talked about GT, but thats ok at least we didn’t demean your diploma, God forbid. It’s snobs like you and all the losing as to why we can only half fill a small stadium and their is little campus pride as where football is concerned. So have fun telling me I am an idiot and losing one of your last 10 walkup fans that has season tickets who is considering dropping them because we will never when with folks like you and their precious sheepskins. You know pride does leadith before the fall and God help us their is no more Kim King to save thi program from division 3 or shutting it down altogether. Happy day smart man.

Mike Leach stuff: Two weeks ago, he called his players “corpses” in a postgame interview. Saturday, he said, “That could have been a zombie convention out there” and “A part of it’s effort, and some of it borders on cowardice.” 17 guys have left the program. He booted the last one for quitting during a conditioning program Sunday night. I guess he intends to get rid of everybody who doesn’t buy in. I kind of like that approach.
