UPDATE: Tech handles Maryland, 33-13

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – In search of a full, four-quarter effort, Georgia Tech left Byrd Stadium Saturday still looking for it. But the Yellow Jackets did regain their offensive footing and located the right opponent for confidence-building purposes.

In what may go down in the annals as “The game when Tech played against the quarterback who was a linebacker,” the Yellow Jackets pushed aside Maryland 33-13 in their attempt to reclaim the season and finish on an upward trajectory.

“I know they’re on, like, their fifth quarterback,” said A-back Orwin Smith, his tone void of sympathy. “It has to be tough. We’re moving on to North Carolina.”

A week after BYU body-slammed the Jackets in all phases of the game, Tech offered a performance that was rugged and energetic, though not free of flaws. The Tech defense didn’t permit a first down until midway through the second quarter and shut out the Terrapins through the first 44 minutes of the game. Quarterbacks Tevin Washington and Vad Lee directed Tech to 370 rushing yards against the No. 4 rushing defense in the country, more than three times what Tech gained against BYU last Saturday and 202 yards more than the Terrapins’ previous season high.

However, Tech lost two fumbles and again encountered turbulence on kickoff coverage and extra points, as kicker David Scully bounced one try off an upright and then failed to clear the line of scrimmage on another. The defense, given an opportunity to close down a Maryland offense that was eminently capable of cooperating, gave up 161 yards and two touchdowns on the Terrapins’ final three possessions.

That said, in a season in which Tech has lost three games in which it led in the fourth quarter and this week compelled coach Paul Johnson to stick up for the state of the program, a victory was more than enough. On a chilly and overcast afternoon, Tech improved to 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the ACC. Maryland fell to 4-5 and 2-3.

“As I told our guys, we keep alive what we’re playing for this season,” Johnson said. “We still have a chance mathematically (to win) the league, still have a chance to have a winning season and go to a bowl game. That’s what we’re playing for right now. It makes next week’s game against North Carolina  the biggest game of the year for us.”

Maryland quarterback Shawn Petty, a true freshman recruited to College Park as a linebacker but forced to switch positions after the Terrapins’ first four quarterbacks suffered season-ending injuries, was largely ineffective. As Tech coaches expected, Maryland mostly kept the game on the ground, trying zone-option plays and also using a Wildcat package with running back Wes Brown.

Crowding the tackle box with as many as seven players, Tech held Maryland to 144 rushing yards and a 3.3 yards-per-carry average. On Maryland’s final three possessions of the game, Petty led the Terrapins to a pair of touchdowns, both on passes. The second was on the final play of the game.

“The speed of the game was something that it took him a little bit of time to get used to,” Maryland coach Randy Edsall said of Petty. “You can’t go out there and line up at this level after only seven practices and think that everything is going to happen the way you hope it will.”

Interim defensive coordinator Charles Kelly “was, like, Stay inside the box and let him prove that he can pass and then we’ll widen things out,” said inside linebacker Quayshawn Nealy.

Nealy led Tech with a career-high 12 tackles, including a jarring point-of-attack stop on a 3rd-and-1 play in the second quarter when he knocked tailback Albert Reid back for a 1-yard loss. After the punt, Lee drove the Jackets 49 yards for a touchdown and a 20-0 lead with 8:47 to play in the second quarter. It went a great length to doom Maryland, which has scored more than 21 points just twice this season.

Johnson rotated Washington and Lee, giving Washington two series to begin the game and then Lee the final three of the half. In the second half, Washington had the first two possessions and Lee had the final two. Washington led Tech to two touchdowns in his four series. Lee was 3-for-5.

It was the A-backs’ day, as Johnson called a number of tosses and option plays that often ended with the ball in their hands. They gained 220 of Tech’s 370 rushing yards. Smith ran with speed and force and led Tech with 89 yards on 10 carries. He scored the second touchdown of the game, a second-quarter 5-yard run to the corner freed up by a block by B-back David Sims.

“Coach found a couple of plays that were very successful,” Lee said. “We just took advantage of it and kept running it and it was working. We just kept grinding.”

Alright, here’s what we did well and need to continue doing:

1. Offensive Line play: Against the loaded inside linemen of Maryland’s D, our OL held it’s own. It helped that we designed plays to the outside… lots of counter option, tosses & sweeps.
2. Perimeter & interior blocking: Godhigh, Days, Orwin, and Sims all did a real good job blocking. Solid running by Orwin and Days a bonus.
3. Executing the triple option: With the windy conditions and limited pass playbook, Washington and Lee were totally dialed into the option. Very few missed reads or bad decisions today.
4. An acceptable defense… in the first half. Shutting out a team for a half using a 5th string QB isn’t saying much, but it’s probably the defense we’ve played since the Presby game.

Here’s what we need to improve:
1. Scully, Moore, and Chau… I don’t care who kicks, they need to kick high and far. Special teams have not been too bad if you exclude the kicking component (kickoffs, FG, XP), and kickoff return coverage. Everything else has been pretty good.
2. Don’t get gassed on the 4th quarter… I understand some backups were playing later on, but you cannot let go towards the end. Even against the terrible offense of Maryland, we only managed to keep pace with their scoring in the second half.
3. Don’t drop easy catches. Shades of 2010. I remember Nesbitt had like a 35% completion rate.

@ David S…….obviously any head coach must take the blame for the failings of any aspect of his team’s performance, but CPJ’s offense works, and with a better O-line it will work even better. The D has sucked, and I don’t deny it, but a decent DC next year could easily make a big difference; we HAVE good enough athletes on D already, but they’ve been terribly coached by Groh. ST’s is anybody’s guess. But, even though CPJ is ultimately responsible for every aspect of the team’s play, he is nevertheless NOT the problem.

Still, GT demonstrated once again that we need DBs that can tackle. Stop launching bodies at runners and bouncing off the side glances. Wrap your arms around them and “tackle” them to the ground. Pull out a tape of Ken Swilling and learn some basics of tackling.

Solid game today by the Jackets, no doubt, so I’m happy for the moment. But I’m not going to put too much stock in the win, just like I didn’t with the BC win. Maryland has way too many injuries to be competitive this year. I’ve said this many times before, probably on a GT blog, but stats only mean something when you research further. That defense who was ranked 4th in the nation had previously faced the following teams; William & Mary, Temple, Connecticut, West Virginia, Wake Forrest, UVA, NC St & Boston College. Aside from WVU, I don’t see anyone lighting it up on offense. Once again, I’m happy with the win, but sometimes you gotta put things in perspective.

Been going to GT games since 1970 after I graduated with my first degree. Even kept my season tics during the Bill Lewis years. I support CPJ for now because there is no other option. I think this team could be better but some poor decisions on the part of CPJ have made it what it is. There are better special teams coaches – particularly kicking and punting right there in Atlamta. Carol White, former kicking coach at GT, is better; Chris Hanson, Coweta HS, Marshal, SF 49ers superbowl, are all right there and can teach someone how to punt and kick and they will not get blocked or hit their linemen in the butt. Not sure if she still does but Carol used to run a kicking camp during the summers. If she still does, I would strongly suggest that GT send some people. I took my son to her camps, Pelfrey’s, and Ray Guy’s. Hers were, by far, the best.

Went to see the Jackets with my son-in-law who lives in nearby DC and was happy with the win, but also impressed with the sizable contingent of Tech fans. Probably 1,500 or more. Obviously a lot of GT fans in this metro area. A delegation from the Tech ban also made the trip and did a great job, including the traditional end-of-third quarter “Budweiser Song,” even though it was actually about 5 minutes into the 4th quarter. Tech fans got into it and certainly make the Terp fans take notice.

As for the game, Tevin had one(1) good run and had a wide-open TD pass dropped, but….Vad is the Man!! My son-in-law, who is a Tennessee fan but has a masters from Tech, is a very astute football fan. He said, “Dang, this Lee kid can play! And so can Days!”

I told him that a LOT of Tech fans, me included, have been saying the same thing ALL season!

man you guys are losers. you don’t show up to the games and yet you complain as if this program is on par with Alabama whenever it doesn’t produce similar results. get real. until you get easier degree programs you are not going to get the same type of athletes that Georgia has, so right now Paul Johnson is the best that you guys are going to do. yea, its a down year. so what? Paul went 2-10 at Navy his first year. thats pretty freakin’ terrible, but the next year he went 8-5, then 10-2. the man knows what he is doing, give him a chance. most people are relatively pleased with him, even though this year has proven pretty bad overall. recruiting has not been fantastic, but its been getting better. give the main one more year at least. I would personally not even root for your program if it weren’t for Paul Johnson. I grew up hating Georgia, but I wasn’t sure that I really wanted to call Georgia Tech my team until I watched CPJ’s jackets play the mutts and beat them on their own turf during his first year. I decided then and there that I was all in for Ga Tech, and I stand by the coach even during this terrible season. to be honest, I don’t even think that most Tech fans hate Paul Johnson, its just that the ones that do can’t shut their mouths about it and refuse to shut up unless they are heard loud and clear. I have some advice for you–if you want to root for a team simply because they win, root for alabama. or at least root for Uga. but neither program has any integrity. so if you want to root for the program that does, then why don’t you have a little integrity yourself?

I’m probably in the minority, but I hated to see D.Rad leave (especially for Clemson), and I fully support CPJ. Obviously, this season hasn’t turned out the way any of us would have wanted, but I believe our current coaching staff has recruited some very good athletes and that this same staff has the ability to mold these athletes into a winning team. If you look at the scores of our games this year, there were two games when we didn’t score 28 points of more. Clearly, we’ve scored enough points to have a 7-2 record right now. Unfortunately, our defense has given up 41 points or more in four of our losses. CAG was an experienced defensive coaching specialist (who has even coached a Super Bowl-winning defense), so I don’t fault CPJ for giving him an opportunity to turn things around. When it became evident that Groh couldn’t achieve the goals of the team, he was replaced … just as he should have been. Whether the team can make enough changes to win out for the rest of the season is questionable, but I have no doubt that we have enough talent to do just that. And hey … regardless of how the football team performs over the next couple of months, I’m excited about the new basketball seasons that will begin at McCamish Pavilion over the next eight days. I hope many of you will join me in supporting both the men’s and women’s teams.

I don’t think Tech will beat NC, Duke or Georgia. NC played Duke in a high scoring game, and Duke had a much better record than Tech. The yellow jacket offense is ineffective against most schools, and needs to be used occasionally only. The defense cannot blitz or cover like Morgan Burnett did, and Scully cannot kick. PJ has uni problems that he just got around to adjusting this year since the Chick-Fil-A Bowl game. Tech is not entertaining with the triple option at all if they play major schools, and they consider themselves to be a major school. A coaching change should be made, and an entire coaching staff should be made as well. Glanville said he wanted to get back into coaching. Contact him. But who would contact? Tech has no AD.

Today was much better on O against what has been a pretty good Maryland D. Tevin looked efficient, Vad is really good and getting better. The pass off Wallers hands was soooo close. Recievers will have to adjust to a harder ball from Lee. D looked pretty good but against an offense with literally one hand tied behind their back. ST is just baffling— keep working. @ Reality……again, don’t let facts get in your way. The AJC reported in the Fall of 2011 that the percentage of foreign students in the UGA freshman class was higher than the percentage of foreign students in the Tech freshman class. Regardless, I don’t see how that can correlate to wins on the football field. It MIGHT affect attendance, but certainly not performance. Tech had a string of LOUSY coaches, and that’s when the disparity really began.

And just what was all of this puffed up chest thumping about anyway. I very much dislike Tech’s lack of athletic success since Dodd retired, with occasional flashes of glory, but it is what it is. I still cheer for them & hope for the best. But it is what it is. Georgie has relatively easy majors for athletes & Tech doesn’t. Therefore Georgie gets more top tier athletes than Tech does. The new rules that go into effect in 2016 are supposedly going to level that playing field. We shall see, if we live that long. And I ain’t giving up without a fight.

Well, congrats to the team on a good win!

However, Md’s 4th ranked defense is because the teams they have played are not teams like BYU.

You have to admit that Md was not picked to win their division, and especially with a linebacker at QB. So we have to be careful to not get too full of ourselves and stay focused. We could lose all of the remaining games, not saying we will, just that the teams we face have the potential to beat us. I never thought MTSU would beat us either, but…..

I had hoped prior to the season, with our new strength and conditioning coach we would held up better in the 4th qtr. Maybe next year if they actually work hard on conditioning.

4 seconds left on the clock and they are on the 33 yd line, you know they are going to throw the ball, so should have had at least one guy defending the goal line. Giving up that play at the end is still Va Tech and Miami redux with a pass from a middle linebacker?

The team’s new motto is play for 60 minutes, not 59 minutes and 56 seconds, that goes for the coaches as well. We had the game in hand, but, there is still a lesson to be learned for players and coaches alike on that game ending play.

Hey, nice win Techies! Against the most injury riddled team in the ACC, that had a back-up lb playing 5th string QB!!!! If he scored 13 pts, then UGA is going to hang 50 on you. If CPJ starts Vad Lee (which he should have been doing all year), Tech MAY score its usual 17… What a dumpster fire your program is. Fire your DC in the middle of the year, lose your AD to your daddy Clemson, losses to MIddle Tenn State and BYU, and your beloved HC will be gone at the end of the year. I will make a wager right now with the 8 of you on this blog that if UGA doesn’t beat Tech by atleast 17 pts, I will never post on this site again. If they do, you guys have to not post. Deal?

Hey Buzz-Off, that is because at Tech, if they go down by 10 in the first qtr, their high school offense can’t come back and win. So, if UGA is losing after the first possesion, they (techies) feel as though we are going to lose. I am going to love watching UGA run tech off the field this year! It never gets old!

Rumor has it that UGa will give Murray a rest against GT and start Jarvis Jone at QB. Wow, he’ll kill Tech since he isn’t a “true” freshman….and knows the playbook, unlike the freshman LB….I mean QB at MD who was 9-18 for over 115 yards. It’s incredible and embarrassing that Techies would be proud of that win!!!

Yep, that offense is tough to sell. Please fire Paul Johnson. I mean they have fallen all the way down to 4th in the nation in rushing. Regardless of the coach, my Yellowjacket have always pointed out that they have a recruiting problem due to their academic standards and narrow curriculum. An unusual offensive scheme tends to level the field when there is a talent gap. You won a conference title just a few years ago. The problem is that a good DC is tough to find. On paper, Groh should have been at least decent. This is the second time PJ has replaced his DC. I hope that you are not patient enough for him to find the right fit on that side of the ball. I suggest Greg Hudson, LB coach at FSU. He was DC at ECU under Skip Holtz. But if you want to fire Paul Johnson, by all means go ahead.

CPJ is not going anywhere. New AD coming in, he’s not going to make a change for a while. Also, if you think we are bad now, imagine what would happen if a new coach came in with the talent level we have now, and the offense we run. To go to a more “conventional” offense after CPJ’s effort to build a team with his triple option(actually it’s not a triple option offense….evidence the Maryland game where we threw the ball a whopping 4 times…), well it would be the end of football at GT.
Sorry, but it is what it is!

The good:
Quarterbacks Tevin Washington and Vad Lee directed Tech to 370 rushing yards against the No. 4 rushing defense in the country
The best rushing D GT has played in 2012, better than BYU’s … how hard it is to keep the focus of 18-23 year olds week in and week out.

The Bad:
The defensegave up 161 yards and two touchdowns on the Terrapins’ final three possessions.
Lack of concentration? Yeah. Lack of quality depth? HELLS YEAH! #42 is not good.

The Ugly: (and I’m not talking about his hair)
extra points, as kicker David Scully bounced one try off an upright and then failed to clear the line of scrimmage on another. KO coverage is ugly too! I fear GT gives up a killer return to UNC next week…

GT TN,

UGA is the biggest “smoke & mirrors” team in FBS the past 2 seasons. Them being ranked #5 is just further indictment of how flawed the BCS/polls are.

From Boise to start 2011 to 11/4/2012 the Dawgs have played 6 GOOD teams: Boise, USC, LSU, Mich St, USC, UF (overated, but still good team in 2012). They are 1-5 in those 6 games, and 17-0 vs. teams that are mediocre or worse.

I find it comical that anyone who’s team lost to MTSU and BYU by 3 TDs would comment on any team having a off night playing without All American LB.Is there a team outside of the ACC Tech could compete (excluding Presbyterian)? Pretty much. In the AP polls UGA and Ohio State are tied at #5. Both of those teams would lose to the majority of the teams in the top 25. Polls are completely a byproduct of schedule combined with hype. They don’t have much to do with actual on the field play.
