Due to unfathomably bad luck with injuries, Maryland’s quarterback against Georgia Tech Saturday will be a freshman linebacker.
Shawn Petty will be at quarterback for the Terrapins, assuming he doesn’t get injured before then. The Terrapins’ fourth quarterback to play this season because of season-ending injuries to the first three, true freshman Caleb Rowe, tore his ACL in Saturday’s loss to Boston College. It was Rowe’s first college start.
Going into the preseason, C.J. Brown was the only quarterback on the roster with playing experience, and he tore his ACL in the preseason during a noncontact drill. He was replaced by Perry Hills, who started seven games before tearing his ACL. Devin Burns came in for Hills against N.C. State and then tore the Lisfranc ligament in his foot.
Rowe, a true freshman, played quarterback and linebacker in high school. According to the Washington Times, Rowe “looked every bit like the linebacker he is during warmups Saturday” against Boston College. The No. 3 backup Saturday was Brian McMahon, a true freshman tight end who played quarterback in high school.
The injuries followed the transfer of Danny O’Brien, who started 17 games for Maryland in 2010 and 2011, to Wisconsin, not to mention more than 20 other players who transferred out in Edsall’s first 14 months as head coach.
To compare Maryland’s with Tech, it would be similar to Tevin Washington transferring over the summer, followed by Vad Lee, Synjyn Days and Justin Thomas all suffering season-ending injuries. At that point, Tech’s options would probably be B-back and former quarterback David Sims and A-back Dennis Andrews, a true freshman who played quarterback as an early enrollee last spring. And, considering that both Sims and Andrews came to Tech as quarterbacks and have practiced at the position (Sims also played a few snaps in 2010), Tech’s situation would be considered the far better of the two.
Maryland is 4-4 overall and 2-2 in ACC play.

Watch this, GT will stop a pitiful Maryland team and CPJ offense will run up and down the field on an inferior team and CPJ and the Gold Colored Brianless crowd will be hooting for Coach Kell to be the DC and that CPJ is the man! Watch it, I told you but the truth is this program I’m so sad to say needs an overhaul!!!!!!

There has been some seriously bad foot ball played in the ACC this year. I suspect we can beat Maryland. They are not exactly ridding high after losing to BC.

GT Joe, Booing college kids is a selfish CLASSLESS act. Said it before— college kids do dumb stuff sometimes, doesnt matter, its COLLEGE. You get a pass in college — not the pros and there is a big difference even if you dont want to see it. Yo mama should have raised you better!
How many of you did STUPID stuff in college, even when you were trying!!!! Duuuhhh.

The tharpe fund might be worth $30 million, but it only contributes the interest on that money to scholarships, i.e., 5% or $1.5 million per year…this is from the website, I don’t make stuff up

“The Athletic Association’s scholarship endowment has a current market value of more than $30 million, which generates approximately $1.5 million annually. This means approximately 25 percent of the annual scholarship costs for student-athletes are funded by endowment”
Again, GT Joe, you need to understand what an “endowed” scholarship is – the A/T Fund sure raises a heck of a lot more than this “interest only” each year – the $30mil principal is money that is there year in and year out, the Fund raises this amount annually, if not more, too, to GO WITH the $1.5mil that is generated as interest…
Wow, again, I am embarrassed for you, especially since you are putting all this dumbness out for all of your Tech bretheren to see…

UM has played some decent games this year, probably two more than Tech. We should be building for next year, giving youngsters some quality reps and game prep seeing if Lee is or isn’t that much better than TW (short of recruiting a stud h.s. QB, we’re stuck wth Lee as a starter next year anyhow). And hopefully CPJ can find a DC and rediscover his own inner OC and create some meaningful new wrinkles to make the option work again. A lot of maybes and ifs and woulda-shoulda-coulda’s, so in short, it’s going to be a long winter and off-season. I never thought I’d be the one saying it, but hey, basketball season is just around the corner and we’ve got a shiny new arena thanks to our departed AD.

Break, I have often wondered why Brandon Shaw left Tech…..he had the pedigree (Conner ain’t half bad)–h.s. coach dad and option experience…..and I know that he wouldn’t have gotten many reps in Nesbitt’s last years, but really…..CPJ must have said something to him or vice versa.

Coach Johnson, I know you would never deign to read a mere Tech fan and contributor’s post, but I hope to heck you will make an effort to better represent the Institute publicly……you seem to think that winning games is enough….but we haven’t been doing much of that either lately, have we? I wish the new AD will get more positive energy and personality out of CPJ. We need it.

Amen brother, FMJacket. “What we have here is a failure to communicate” Johnson does not communicate well with fans and alums and the general public……all of whom are potential ticket buyers and supporters for future games. Where is the encouragement, the optimism, the look ahead,…the sincere explanation for recent failures and disappointments. Feels like we’re about 3-10 over our last dozen or so games…..Those are Bill Lewis and early Bill Curry numbers. “So what are you willing to do next to turn this thing around?”

Am I wrong or has Tevin Washington been smiling and laughing after horrible passes, interceptions, and even losses? Television shots and binoculars at this years games seem to show that. I am not satisfied with a player or players who laugh off mistakes, nor with a coach that lets them do so. If you don’t really care, at least don’t show it.

New AD? Maybe time for a new FB HC too. Most of our sports seem to be heading in the right direction or maintaining a consistent level of success. I am hopeful that Gregory’s second year will be better and I do like the way he represents the Institute and the athletics programs. I am a loyal Tech fan but i am getting weary of mediocre football and such lousy PR by the FB program. You can act like a jerk like Saban when you win like a winner like Saban.

With our performance over the last dozen games (last year to this year), our football program is approaching the low water mark of the Lewis era. We’re still getting over the Hewitt era in BB (and his buyout) and now we can’t even look repsectable on the field. Wins and losses are important, but more important is the way you do either one. And we are losing UGLY. Missed tackles, poor play execution, unimaginative play calling, and general lack of preparation tactically and mentally looks so bad and makes all of us look bad. Players are kids and while they are paid with scholarships usually, coaches are full-time employees of the Insitute who must be held to higher standard. We wouldn’t accept this kind of result from our administrators, our faculty, or even our janitors at Tech…..

Maybe time to wipe the depth chart clean, start from scratch and build for next year. At least start preparing for UGA so we won’t embarrass ourselves in Athens. Duke, UNC, and UGA will have little trouble with the team that has shown up in the white and gold for the last 10 games. UM may be our last chance at a win, but I’d rather be focussed on building towards the future. Since we’re stuck with CPJ that means shaking up the rest of the coaching staff and put the players on notice. Then again, maybe they’re tired of the curmudgeon act, too.

GT Joe..I haven’t gone anywhere and your recent post lets me know you are still and idiot..TW struggled on Saturday..I have never had anything against Vad..I gave always said that Vad hasn’t done anything to show he should be a starter..he lead us to a fg with the help of 45 yds n penalties…his last 2 drives he got 1 first down against a defense playing no starters..that is when he should have shined..he has a ton of ability but he is not the all save all as you think he is..does he deserve to get playing time..yes without a doubt…did he show me anything on Saturday to change my thoughts on who is better right now..no he didn’t..it also lets me know what kind of a person that thinks it is ok to boo..these are 20 year old kids before they are football players..if they were paid it would be 1 thing..but they are not..these are someone’s kid you are booing at..it also shows you most likely font have kids or you would change your thoughts on booing someone..

Shaw left to go to GSU because he wanted to be a high school coach just like his dad and also because he realized that he would not beat out Nesbit, although would have been nice to get his brother. We did get his teammates Drummond and Cross. Again, if a student wants to be a teacher and coach, he’s not coming to Tech since we do not offer any Education majors

Have a darn seat with this foolery!! Of course he is not smiling and laughing at those things one bit. You think he WANTED to see his final season of football go up in flames?? Thats such a silly remark. But nothing coming from you people surprise me anymore. Theres no need to try to demonize him.
You will get to see Vad start this Saturday. And as many of you have called for, I hope he plays the entire game. Of course he may look like the messiah you all think him to be playing against the 5th string QB but that wont matter either.

This article makes no sense. It says (correctly) that Shawn Petty will play QB on Saturday, and that 4th-stringer Caleb Rowe tore his ACL last week. But then it says (incorrectly) that Rowe played QB and LB in high school and looked like “the linebacker that he is” during warm ups.
Rowe is out, Petty is in. Petty was the linebacker. Get it right, AJC.
