Due to unfathomably bad luck with injuries, Maryland’s quarterback against Georgia Tech Saturday will be a freshman linebacker.
Shawn Petty will be at quarterback for the Terrapins, assuming he doesn’t get injured before then. The Terrapins’ fourth quarterback to play this season because of season-ending injuries to the first three, true freshman Caleb Rowe, tore his ACL in Saturday’s loss to Boston College. It was Rowe’s first college start.
Going into the preseason, C.J. Brown was the only quarterback on the roster with playing experience, and he tore his ACL in the preseason during a noncontact drill. He was replaced by Perry Hills, who started seven games before tearing his ACL. Devin Burns came in for Hills against N.C. State and then tore the Lisfranc ligament in his foot.
Rowe, a true freshman, played quarterback and linebacker in high school. According to the Washington Times, Rowe “looked every bit like the linebacker he is during warmups Saturday” against Boston College. The No. 3 backup Saturday was Brian McMahon, a true freshman tight end who played quarterback in high school.
The injuries followed the transfer of Danny O’Brien, who started 17 games for Maryland in 2010 and 2011, to Wisconsin, not to mention more than 20 other players who transferred out in Edsall’s first 14 months as head coach.
To compare Maryland’s with Tech, it would be similar to Tevin Washington transferring over the summer, followed by Vad Lee, Synjyn Days and Justin Thomas all suffering season-ending injuries. At that point, Tech’s options would probably be B-back and former quarterback David Sims and A-back Dennis Andrews, a true freshman who played quarterback as an early enrollee last spring. And, considering that both Sims and Andrews came to Tech as quarterbacks and have practiced at the position (Sims also played a few snaps in 2010), Tech’s situation would be considered the far better of the two.
Maryland is 4-4 overall and 2-2 in ACC play.

To all who think that this may be a chance at a win, don’t get too excited yet. Bascially all he has to do is hand off the ball to a running back. The way we play defense, expect a heavy barrage of run plays, of which we will have a real problem stopping. Also, they have a “real” head coach, who will make adjustments. Expect another loss.

“Georgia Tech’s student-athletes have a long and proud history of bringing distinction to the Institute on the playing field, in the classroom, and in their careers. The Alexander-Tharpe Fund, Inc. was established to ensure that this tradition can be extended far into the future. By giving to the A-T Fund, which exists as a means to support scholarships for Tech’s student-athletes, you will help generate a number of dividends for Georgia Tech’s student-athletes, the Institute as a whole, and the greater Atlanta community.
The primary purpose of the Alexander-Tharpe Fund, Inc. is to raise the money necessary to pay for Georgia Tech’s student-athletes’ scholarships. Our goal at A-T is to raise enough money in unrestricted annual giving to cover the cost of the number of scholarships currently allowed by the NCAA.”

The Athletic Association’s scholarship endowment has a current market value of more than $30 million, which generates approximately $1.5 million annually. This means approximately 25 percent of the annual scholarship costs for student-athletes are funded by endowment.

..as I asked you to do before, please learn the difference between “endowed” scholarship money and non-endowed scholarship money. But I will give you a heads up…
The GOAL of the Tharpe Fund, most other universities’ athletic fund raising groups, is to have fully “endowed” scholarships for all sports; this means that they would like to have enough money donated to invest so that the interest from the investment pays for scholarships in perpetuity (that means forever without ever having to raise another dime for scholarships).
At Tech, they need $500,000 to fully “endow” one scholarship. So, since they have not yet obtained that much money for EACH scholarship “in perptuity”, they rely on OTHER donations through the Tharpe Fund and the Tech Fund to provide the remaining scholarship money.
End of lesson – go back to the tag line you supplied about the Endowed Scholarships at GT through the Tharpe Fund and read about how much each sport requires in endowed money…then, if available, call the folks at Tech at the Tharpe Fund and ask them how much more comes in to provide additional scholarship money for athletes, and you will have “the rest of the money”…
Uh, complete and total idiot...

Again, if you think that the Tharpe and Tech Fund gets donations to pay for the other 75% of scholarships every year, you are a fool. If you can find ONE source to support your claim, I’ll believe you.
Nowhere on the Tharpe or Tech Fund website does it say that it funds all athletic scholarships 100%. But keep believing what you want.

…The Tharpe Fund and the Tech Fund raise a heck of a lot more than $1.5mil per year – heck, the Tech Fund ALONE raises approx. $9mil via the sale of season football tickets (guesstimating 30K season tickets at approx, $300 per seat)…

I’m right here Joe. Unlike you I have better stuff to do than obsess over a 19 year old on a blog. And are you really trying to stick up for Vad after Saturdays game? He looked absolutely horrid and if not for penalties that made up over half the drive, Vad would have dropped 0 points just like Tevin. BYU had a great d and Tech wasn’t ready for it. Yes Tevin looked bad, but so did Vad. He continued to misread the option and didn’t look to accurate throwing the ball either. Only way we win out with Vad is to throw 60-70% of our games. This o-line can’t pass block that consistently though, so it’s not gonna happen that way. Vad may be a great talent, but he’s not ready to run this offense yet and has proved it every game he has played with his misreads.
And, GT Joe...

…that $9mil is for donations for the right to purchase tickets only; add in the cost of approx. 30K season tickets at approx. $265 per seat and you have an additional $8mil in revenue…or, approx. $17mil from football alone…

That’s true Ted, but as it stands tight now Tevin is the better QB for this offense. Hopefully Vad can get it down before next season. Other wise its probably gonna be the Justin Thomas show next year. I’ve said it before and will say it again. Vad might not even be the starting QB next year. Its gonna come down to who runs the option the best and makes the fewest mistakes in spring and fall camp next year.

…there are a lot so GT grads who contribute a heck of a lot more than $300 to the Tharpe Fund…
And, per the tag line you supplied about the “endowed” scholarships, there are 222 FULL scholarships available to GT athletes (men and women) – and the same site says the cost of full rides for out of state athletes is $30000 per scholly, and approx $15K for instate – Thus, for 222 FULL scholarships, at $30000 per ’ship, that is $6.6mil, a mere 40% of money raised through football tickets alone…
So, GT Joe, though you are a fan of GT, could it be possible that you are not a graduate of GT since you seem not to grasp the nuances of basic economics?

you could add the $1.5 mil that the “endowed” schollys generate, and you have $18.5 mil; thus the $6.6mil; is only 36% of the money generated from football and from the endowment…

All scholarships are paid by the GT AThletic Association. Some money comes from tickets, some from the Tharpe and Tech funds. Some from events, the TV deals, concessions, etc.
But remember, the GTAA is an entity under Georgia Tech. Georgia Tech allows the GTAA to exist, using Georgia Tech (and thus, state owned) facilities to generate revenue.
In the end, the taxpayers are allowing the GTAA to operate using state owned facilities; and the money (aside from the 25% from the donor funds) come from state owned assets. So yes, taxpayers pay a significant portion of these scholarships.

Nasty argument Gents. Funding for scholarships and facilities are two different animals.
Georgia Tech and UGA (the schools, not just the Athletic Depts.) each have a Foundation that raises money from contributors far too successful to post on these blogs. The Foundations raise money and build facilities that the state won’t fund. Then it gets complicated. Somehow the foundation either donates the facilities or leases them back to the schools.
Can’t think of any Athletic facilities at Tech that were done this way (simply not in the know), but a number of developments east of the connector have been handled through the Foundation. UGA does the same thing (how do you think they are going to build an engineering program w/o legislative funding?).

“Additions and improvements to the athletic facilities used by the Association become the property of the
State of Georgia upon installation or acquisition. Under a lease agreement with the Board or Regents of
the University System of Georgia, the Association has the use of this property for up to 40 years.”
IN other words, the state owns the facilities, which the GTAA uses to generate revenues.

http://deadspin.com/5955879/college-shameday-who-embarrassed-themselves-on-saturday-besides-bob-stoops-and-oklahoma?
BYU 41, Georgia Tech 17: Congratulations, Georgia Tech—you are now the only ACC program against which BYU has a winning record, something we can’t even say about Virginia or Boston College. It’s hard to know whom to credit when an offense is this ineffectual; you don’t want to discount the defense’s effort but you also want to make Paul Johnson look stupid. As such, here are some things that make Georgia Tech’s coach look stupid.
• Zero third-down conversions out of 10 tries.
• No passing or rushing touchdowns for the first time since Tech’s 2008 bowl game loss to LSU.
• The longest Yellow Jacket drive, a 70-yard enterprise that ended in a field goal, depended on personal-foul yardage for over half of that distance.
All of those, of course, could be explained away as one bad game that made Paul Johnson look stupid. But! Georgia Tech now enters November with five losses for the first time since 1994 and is in serious danger of not making a bowl for the first time in 16 years. That, ladies and gentlemen, is some sustainable Paul Johnson stupid.
GT Joe

So let’s recap scholarship funding:
The Tharpe and Tech fund pay about $1.5 million/year for scholarships
Total scholarships are about $8 million/year
The remaining $6.5 million is paid by the GT Athletic Association
The GTAA gets money from Georgia Tech, tickets, TV deals, sponsorships, etc.
ALL of these monies leverage the “Georgia Tech” name (state owned) and/or Georgia Tech facilities (state owned)
Therefore, the state (i.e., the taxpayers) own Georgia Tech, and scholarships are a product of this ownership.
Therefore, all taxpayers (and donors to GT, for that matter) have the right to boo players.
