Maryland down to fifth quarterback

Due to unfathomably bad luck with injuries, Maryland’s quarterback against Georgia Tech Saturday will be a freshman linebacker.

Shawn Petty will be at quarterback for the Terrapins, assuming he doesn’t get injured before then. The Terrapins’ fourth quarterback to play this season because of season-ending injuries to the first three, true freshman Caleb Rowe, tore his ACL in Saturday’s loss to Boston College. It was Rowe’s first college start.

“I don’t know something like this has ever happened to a team at that position,” Maryland coach Randy Edsall told reporters Sunday night on his teleconference.

Going into the preseason, C.J. Brown was the only quarterback on the roster with playing experience, and he tore his ACL in the preseason during a noncontact drill. He was replaced by Perry Hills, who started seven games before tearing his ACL. Devin Burns came in for Hills against N.C. State and then tore the Lisfranc ligament in his foot.

Rowe, a true freshman, played quarterback and linebacker in high school. According to the Washington Times, Rowe “looked every bit like the linebacker he is during warmups Saturday” against Boston College. The No. 3 backup Saturday was Brian McMahon, a true freshman tight end who played quarterback in high school.

The injuries followed the transfer of Danny O’Brien, who started 17 games for Maryland in 2010 and 2011, to Wisconsin, not to mention more than 20 other players who transferred out in Edsall’s first 14 months as head coach.

To compare Maryland’s with Tech, it would be similar to Tevin Washington transferring over the summer, followed by Vad Lee, Synjyn Days and Justin Thomas all suffering season-ending injuries. At that point, Tech’s options would probably be B-back and former quarterback David Sims and A-back Dennis Andrews, a true freshman who played quarterback as an early enrollee last spring. And, considering that both Sims and Andrews came to Tech as quarterbacks and have practiced at the position (Sims also played a few snaps in 2010), Tech’s situation would be considered the far better of the two.

Maryland is 4-4 overall and 2-2 in ACC play.

…wow, a linebacker playing QB, and a freshman linebacker at that! If Tech doesn’t put 9 guys on the line each and every down this week (while on defense) then the whole team should be fired…

@SeanMcGuire…Vad Lee didn’t really do much more than Washington. They both got the team in range for a field goal and that was it. The only difference is the 1st go around they missed the field goal. From what I have seen, Vad Lee is a little better passer, but Washington runs the option better. Either way, we will continue to suck with CPJ as coach. He is a joke. We didn’t SCORE A SINGLE OFFENSIVE TOUCHDOWN AGAINST BYU and the firing of Groh didn’t really help out on defense..now did it? BYU scored 41. This is really getting embarrassing.

Sure hope you are wrong tooltime234, but given what this season has looked like up to now, I wouldn’t bet on it.

I’m the unknown hero of the Korean War.
I warned against a landwar in SE Asia and did anyone listen?
58,000 dead, thousands more with lost limbs and a waste of billions better spent in America.
I also warned against playing BYU.
Similar mindsets in both foes.
Think about it.

Lets be sporting about this unfortunate turn of events: We will start our nose tackle at quarterback, get some reps TJ, your roll model is the Phillsbury Throw Boy who played quarterback at Kentucky a few years ago, he was a little under you size at 6′5″ and 260 pounds, but he could take a beating and keep on playing!

The problem is recruiting and that’s just not going to get any better. When the currrent season is being compared to Bill Lewis’ last, you know it’s time to make the hard decision. My vote is for George Godsey as the new HC.

Ken, put on your research cap — I think a similar thing happened to Tech back in the 70’s. We were down to our 7th string QB, as I remember. I think Kim King and Ken Whisenhunt were among the players involved.

If this QB has ever thrown a football in his life, I don’t like our chances. Come to think of it, if he has ever taken a snap, I don’t like our chances.

Danny Sheridan has Tech as a 7 point favorite against Maryland. Obviously, Mr. Sheridan was under a rock last weekend and did not see the ugly butt-kicking that BYU dished out.

What did Vad prove? In half the number of drives, he had more rush yards, pass yards, and points than TW. And actually sniffed the goal line. And had less turnovers. And had more energy.

The team wants Vad too.

I’m glad to see that all my posts since after the VT game have been vindicated. There is now hope for GT football.

…what game were you watching Saturday – both Vad and TW sucked while playing QB – he only “sniffed” the goal line thanks to 45 yards in penalties; after that I could not tell whether TW or Vad was playing QB – they looked the same, except for when Vad tripped over his own feet…

vad lee 2/0
