UPDATED: Radakovich leaves Tech for Clemson

In early August, when he learned that Clemson athletic director Terry Don Phillips planned to retire, Dan Radakovich believed he could be the right man to replace him. He went home and told his wife Marcie that “there could be an incredible opportunity just a couple hours down the road,” Radakovich recounted Monday.

Monday, the Radakoviches made that drive up I-85 to officially seize that opportunity. Radakovich resigned as Georgia Tech athletic director, a position he held for 6 1/2 years, to accept the same job at Clemson.

“It’s going to take a while for me to get used to seeing him in that purple and orange,” Tech president G.P. “Bud” Peterson said.

It was a surprise conclusion to a tenure marked by the completion of numerous athletic facilities, financial stabilization, incessant work and, hardly least, an NCAA investigation that resulted in probation.

“I’ve never witnessed anyone that worked harder and longer and more passionately to advance a program,” said Paul Griffin, Tech’s senior associate athletic director who will serve as acting athletic director until a replacement is hired.

Peterson had known about Radakovich’s interest since shortly after the Tech-Clemson football game Oct. 6, when Clemson president James Barker called to inform him that he wanted to talk with Radakovich, a gesture made out of courtesy rather than contractual necessity.

Radakovich called Peterson soon after to alert him of the interest. The process was already well underway, though. Radakovich had initiated it by calling Phillips.

“I said, ‘Terry, I would really like an opportunity to sit down and talk with the decision-makers for this job,’ and Terry Don was very helpful and instrumental in making that happen,” Radakovich said Monday.

It was not the first time Radakovich, 54, had considered leaving Tech. His name had been linked with AD jobs at Miami, Tennessee and Texas A&M.

“He’s kept me apprised of what he’s doing,” said Peterson in response to a question about past openings. “I don’t think I want to go there today.”

Clemson may have been different. Speaking at the introductory news conference wearing an orange tie and blazer, Radakovich spoke of his first visit to a Clemson football game, as an athletic administrator at Long Beach State in 1990.

“I distinctly remember the feeling, the atmosphere, the hospitality and the passion and, yes, the rock,” he said, referring to Howard’s Rock, the stone that players rub upon entering the stadium. “I remember thinking, ‘This is a place that I want to be.’”

He’ll reportedly be paid $725,000 annually on a five-year contract. At Tech, he was in the third year of a five-year agreement that averaged out to $640,000 per year.

Radakovich’s time at Tech makes a compelling case for his ambitiousness. In a weakened economy, he led construction projects for an indoor football practice facility, a softball stadium, a tennis complex, a basketball practice facility and the renovation of Alexander Memorial Coliseum, which will open Nov. 9 as McCamish Pavilion. The projects increased the athletic department’s debt load from $126 million at the time of his arrival from LSU to $226 million.

But the decision to build at a time when interest rates and construction costs were low appears now to have been a savvy move. Due to low-interest loans and Radakovich’s fundraising and development of revenue streams, the debt service is projected to rise to 18 percent of the fiscal year 2014 budget, but ultimately return to 14 percent, the amount it had been when he was hired.

“I really think one of his legacies here is he got the financial house in order and not only did he get it in order, but he’s left us with facilities that should keep us on par with our peers for the next 30 years,” associate athletic director and chief financial officer Frank Hardymon said.

He instituted the TECH Fund, which requires a donation to the department in order to purchase prime football and men’s basketball season tickets. The added costs irritated some alumni and fans, but they have helped the department balance its budgets. For the 2012 fiscal year, TECH Fund donations accounted for about $4 million of the $59 million in revenues.

To most fans, his most visible imprints were the hires of football coach Paul Johnson (after firing Chan Gailey) after the 2007 season and men’s basketball coach Brian Gregory (after firing Paul Hewitt) following the 2010-11 season. On message boards and Twitter Monday, the disappointment of Johnson’s team this season and Radakovich’s move to an ACC rival school seemed to color many fans’ opinion of Radakovich and his departure.

“Could he take Paul Johnson with him???? I used to like him but after this season … he needs to go,” one commenter wrote on the ajc.com Georgia Tech blog.

Undeniably Radakovich’s albatross will be the NCAA investigation into improper benefits to two football players. Had Radakovich led Tech’s participation differently, the penalty could have been a wrist slap. Instead, the NCAA found in 2011 that the school failed to cooperate in the investigation and failed to meet the conditions and obligations of membership, which resulted in four years of probation and the vacating of its 2009 ACC football championship.

Barker said that he and the search committee were satisfied by Radakovich’s explanation on the matter.

“There were mistakes that were made that I can guarantee will not be made again,” Radakovich said.

Radakovich’s final day at Tech will be Nov. 15 and he will begin working at Clemson at the end of November. Peterson said that the school will interview search firms and assemble a search committee. He told department staff Monday that he expects the process to take two to three months.

“This is a great position,” Peterson said. “It has a lot of opportunity for somebody and we’re excited.”

The rats are jumping ship. when the AD wants out, the institution has big issues.

GT needs to move down to the level of Appalachian State and Catawba College and Samford and Obviously, D Rad wants no part of that downward spiral.

Looks like we just got really lucky, on the surface anyway…..and then I stop to think…who is going to replace him? Bill Curry is the only possibility I can think of that might work, unless we go for an unproven commodity. Our facilities ARE improved, but our teams are in shambles. I can’t think of a period in Tech’s recent history where we had so many bad teams across the board.

I like Paul Johnson, but if this continues, it’s time to go. I’m not even sure he should get another chance unless he can get us into a bowl this year. The recruiting just isn’t happening at the level we need. I’m in favor of bringing Ralph Friedgen back for a 3 year contract with a ‘coach in waiting’ like several other schools have done.

I’m really skeptical of Brian Gregory too. I think we really sold ourselves short on that hire and we should’ve been more patient. Heck, I think even Matt Harpring or Drew Barry, young as they are, would be a more effective coach.

Tech Fans: I am a Dawg fan who has rooted for Tech since the Pepper Rogers days. CPJ has to throw the ball more, especially on 1st down. I know he says no one has stopped his offense yet, but clearly teams slow it down enough to where the losses are mounting. You have to be able to throw the ball against defenses that are good against the run but the O-line is not very good at pass blocking because they run block 90% of the time. Also, it’s hard to imagine top level players coming to Tech in enough numbers to build the depth needed to compete in the ACC with this offense. Gailey drank the Reggie Ball kool-aid too long but he recruited much better talent CPJ. CPJ was most successful with Gailey’s players. Hope you guys turn it around and only lose 1 more game.

I hope this is true. DRad is an idiot. When he came to Tech, he gutted the AT Fund and instituted the Tech Fund. He justified this seat license by saying it was necessary to pay for the football stadium expansion that preceded him. Since then, he has spent money like it is going out of style. So which is it? Are we broke or are we flush with cash? If the latter, do away with the Tech Fund. If the former, stop being fiscally irresponsible. I was raised with the philosophy that if you don’t have any money in the account, stop writing checks.

I hope he goes to Clempsun and takes his Big Boi halftime show with him.

D Rad was also responsible for the Coach Johnson / Coach Gregory hires. Their failures or sucesses fall squarely on him. Part of the Athletic Directors job is rebuilding programs – not just facilities. If the football program had been sailing along by now, I think D Rad would have left before now headed to some of those other offers. My bet is that he sticks around to straighten out the football mess and then takes off.

Good win for UGA a couple days ago and my Panthers even looked better. Tech has got to get better athletes plain and simple. You,sir, are an idiot!

Tech Forever

Why does everyone think the BOR is such a huge hurdle? You ASSUME Tech’s administration has even TRIED to expand the curriculum and/or move for more relaxed requirements for some of the degree programs. I’d betgood money they NEVER HAVE. And there are far too many alums of Tech who’s head would explode if a kid getting a degree in Management could do so without taking two calc class during his core or God forbid Tech offers Kinesiology, Sports Management, or, dare I say it, a School of Science and Math Education.

I mean you guys call Rad “an idiot” and CPJ even worse yet you can’t even recognize that the NCAA and college football are leaving schools like Tech behind with every decision they make. The graduation progress report???? A JOKE!!!!! Just go look at the courses schools like Alabama, Georgia, and LSU have set up to get their football players a “degree”. Tech either needs to move with the times in order to compete, drop down to FCS, drop football altogether, or BE HAPPY WITH WHAT YOU’VE GOT.

Now I know the “yes we can compete” and “we don’t settle for anything less than exceptionalism” posts are about to hammer me. So I will go ahead and respond to you all the same way I always do; HISTORY IS ON MY SIDE……NOT YOURS. We haven’t been relavant save for the blind squirrel finding a nut season every blue moon since the early 60s…..nearly 50 years…..and there is NO REASON to think Tech will be in the next 50.

KBP – I respectfully disagree. Tech didn’t get the talent when we were running a pro-style offense under Gailey (oh Lord…..here comes the “Gailey was an amazing recruiter” and “we had Calvin” group) so there is nothing in the last 15 years to show Tech can CONSISTENTLY get the talent. Seriously, if you were a top 200 recruit would even give Tech a glance? If you say “yes” then it means you want to be an engineer, period…..or you’re not being honest. The school is brutally hard, there are few women, even fewer hot women, serious lack of social atmosphere, small fanbase, and we don’t win. Yeah…..I’d pick THAT over an education degree so I could coach football if the NFL doesn’t work out from Bama all day long. Please.

I’ll also say when I was a kid I always felt welcome at Tech games and around the “Tech Family”. Mostly because my family is the Tech Family. But for he last 20 or so years that has changed dramatically. Tech graduates doa great job of insulating themselves from sidewalk fans and whether they know it or not openly communicate a “we don’t need you because we made it through Tech” attitude to the typical sidewalk fan. I haven’t been to a game in a good long while, and although I miss watching the guys play I don’t miss the highbrow gameday atmosphere at all. Funny. Stanford doesn’t seem to need excuses for their football team, which beat USC again this year. Face it, CPJ was not a great hire for you. Every year with fewer of Gaileys recruits has resulted in fewer wins.
After UGA’s engineering school gets up and running, students will not have to go into a war zone to get
an engineering degree in our state, and the downward spiral into the Big East, followed by Div 1AA, will truly start as the mausoleum on North Ave will be lucky to draw 15,000 a game. The good news is that CPJ has proven himself to be a fantastic 1AA coach!

They are also the same ones who stole the Medical College of Georgia from Augusta and are now completely changing the name of Augusta State University so that eventually it will only be a branch of UGA. And they are the ones who have consistently for 80 years voted down any attempt by Tech to broaden the curriculum at Tech, and YES, in answer to one poster, Tech HAS requested changes and been denied over and over. As far as attempting to compare Stanford and Tech, Stanford IS an extremely highly rated school, but it is a UNIVERSITY that offers the same kind of crap degrees that UGA offers so they can get athletes in.

This is copy/pasted from other article, just keep seeing the same retread, false arguments from a supposedly educated fanbase, so…

Some of the arguments on these boards are laughable. I’ve read numerous times on here that CPJ isn’t a good head coach… You ever check his record at Georgia Southern? Navy?

Lets talk recruiting. Read on here hundreds of times that he can’t recruit. Well, let’s just look at that, shall we? Here are Georgia Tech’s year-by-year recruiting since 2002 from Rivals.com:

2002: 63
2003: 50
2004: 79
2005: 62
2006: 57
2007: 18
2008: 49
2009: 49
2010: 43
2011: 41
2012: 56

It looks like recruiting has actually improved in the CPJ era.

For such an educated fan base, you guys are failing hard when it comes to logical arguments.

How about the argument that the triple option doesn’t work? Top five in rushing yards every year he’s been here isn’t working? He’s apparently taken a team with a QB that can’t throw, and is too slow, and still averaging over 450 yards a game this year. The offense works, with or without passing. Oh, and by the way, he has implemented pistol formations into it as well.

Also, he is stockpiling talent. Look at Boise State. Do they recruit the top talent? Answer: no. They redshirt almost every incoming freshman, and slow the turnover rate and gain an extra year with everybody though. This is the same as what CPJ has been doing. And, if you look at the recruiting rankings, he does recruit talented enough players, so this should work well as it continues. By doing this, to get a real judge of an entire CPJ recruited team, the next two years should be what we judge him on.

There are downsides to CPJ obviously. One is his demeanor on the sidelines. The way he yells at players may result in some of them tuning him out. At Georgia Southern, he probably had better players than most teams, and with all the winning, the yelling didn’t seem as bad. At Navy, they’re used to being yelled at by superiors. It’s part of the training. At a big-conference school, where you are woo-ing the players to come play for you-star high school athletes-then berate them weekly on tv, it might not be as well-received. Whether that’s all on him or also on the players as well, is up for debate.

The lack of defense during his tenure is concerning. Yes, it could be said that because of the offense they run, the defense doesn’t see much time in practice against conventional style offenses. However, considering the scout team mimicks that week’s team, this isn’t the biggest problem.

The choices in defensive coordinators is concerning as well, and perhaps his choices for assistants overall. The special teams coach hire is puzzling. To go get someone who was coaching in Canada, when there are plenty of qualified assistants that have ties to this area was a poor choice. Not so much because I don’t think the ST coordinator can’t coach (the ST unit hasn’t been very good though), but he has zero ties to the area for recruiting. That can’t help.

Basically, CPJ has warts, like all coaches not name Saban. He is an offensive mastermind, yesterday not included. Again though, even the best look bad occasionally. His offense does and has worked, with both his players and Gailey’s players. He definitely has the ability to outsmart the opposing coach more often than not. On the other hand, he can’t get a quality defense here (remember when George O’Leary had the same problem?), he is an abrasive person at times, maybe causing players to tune him out or quit, and he has gotten a little too conservative the last few years, as opposed to his first few here. All in all, he should be given more time to sort through the struggles. The talent is there, the offensive scheme is there, lets see what happens with a new defensive coordinator.

It really makes some of you “fans” seem less than educated with the arguments you put forth as to why CPJ should go. Being such a strong educational institution, to argue the pro’s and con’s of the football program should have a higher level of discourse and more well researched and backed in fact arguments than what is spewed here on a daily basis.

@ RWill……good post. Right now I am doubting CPJ, but that will pass. I agree with everything good that you said about him. Regarding his brashness with the players on the field, I don’t think it bothers them, or at least one or two of them would have dropped out by now.

The last team in the state of Georgia to win a national championship in football… Georgia Tech (1990). The only team in the state of Georgia to ever play in the NCAA basketball championship game… Georgia Tech (1990). The last team in the state of Georgia to build a new, state-of-the-art basketball arena… Georgia Tech (2012). The team in the state of Georgia that played in a BCS bowl in 2009… Georgia Tech. The only team in the state of Georgia to require athletes to pass a difficult academic program, just like its other students… Georgia Tech. It’s remarkable what Georga Tech has achieved academically and athletically. And it will surpass those achievements in the future, even with a football factory that causes everyone to laugh when it claims to have “student athletes” as its in-state rival. I graduted from UGA, but I’m a big Tech fan, because Tech stands for something, and Georgia stands for anything.

I don’t mention the following as an excuse but rather as a historical event. Attendance and fan base for Tech football took a huge hit when the Falcons arrived. Until then Tech had a monopoly for Atlanta’s football. I don’t believe Tech ever recovered, nor can it,since the school’s number of graduates is relatively low—-with a high percentage living outside of Georgia. I now think that we can have more success with a new AD and head coach, but we’ll never win many recruiting battles nor win many games against the major football schools. So be it.

At this point I do not believe it matters if DRad leaves or not. I agree with all the comments that GT will be what it is now. That being a medicore program in football.
There have been a lot of excuses offered. Some are just that….excuses. However, I believe that there are some valid reasons for the demise of football. First one goes back to the Dodd decision to leave the SEC. Secondly the post above about the Falcons, Finally, the change in caliber of atheletes over the years who play football. GT has not been able to keep pace with modern day recruiting and get the best.

That’s due to D Rad cutting wasteful spending and overspending all across the AA. I think that CPJ should get another year. He has earned it. However, I am concerned that a top notch DC will not want to come to GT out of fear that the whole regime will be gone in one year and that a move to GT would be temporary. I could care less if the AD leaves. GT will have no problem finding another good AD. It is a historically strong program in almost every sport (womens and mens) with some of the best facilities in the country. If at some point we have to get a new football coach, we need someone young and on the rise rather than another old boring white guy like CPJ and CCG. GT has a huge advantage of being in the city of Atlanta. Between Atlanta, the academics at GT, and the facilities, there has got to be some coach out there that can really sell the place to top notch recruits.

Yeah, that whole situation sort STUNK to high heaven. I think when the NCAA or whoever it is comes to investigate a minor infraction, you don’t resist and act as though you are obstructing their investigation. That falls squarely on the AD’s shoulders. The infraction that at the center of Tech’s punishment was a “ticky-tack” infraction that could have easily been a slap on the wrist instead of losing your ACC championship from that year.
Many Georgia fans get upset when Mark Richt and/or McGarity “lay down” when the NCAA comes and investigates; however, UGA is smart enough to bend over backwards and cooperate with the investigation, therefore, UGA ends up with a minor slap on the wrist.
DRAD is overrated and Clempson will soon find out.

Unbelievable comments on this board. Lets get the facts straight. Tech basketball is building a great foundation, with a new state of the art arena, a good coach and two great recruiting classes. This is just getting ready to pay off, in a big way. Baseball is consistently good, sometimes great. Year in, year out, Tech has one of the best programs in the country. Women’s basketball has consistently improved and is now very competitive, track has been very competive over the years and so has volleyball. The only issue right now is football, and yes, we are in a bad year. Since 1997, we had 14 consecutive years of bowls and winning seasons. We will get this turned around soon. Georgia Tech is the number 5 engineering school in the country, and attracts top students from around the world. With over $1 billion in capital investments in facilities since the 1996 olympics, with entrance scores increasing each year, and with a student population that is more balanced by race, gender and nationality than most schools in the state, Georgia Tech will continue its success in both academics and athletics. These are the facts.

Ga tech could still win the ACC – just beat Maryland, North Carolina and Duke and the team is 5-3; have Duke beat Miami but lose to Ga tech and Clemson and Duke is 4-4, have North Carolina lose to Ga tech and lose to either Maryland or Virginia and NC is 4-4, have Miami lose to Va Tech and lose to either Duke or Virginia and Miami is 4-4, have Va tech beat Miami and then lose to FSU and lose to either Boston College or Virginia and then Va tech is 4-4. It could happen!

The “money” sports – football and basketball – at Georgia Tech are in sad shape, no question. But is Clemson that much better? This year they disbanded their swim team because they didn’t want the expense of a 50M pool, which Tech has courtesy of the 1996 Olympics. So, DR is not going to a particularly visionary institution, in my view.

So far as its sports programs go, GT needs to make creating a supportive environment for true student-athletes to flourish job number one. The focus should be on character and ethics first, classroom success second, and athletic achievement third. In an ideal world, GT would enroll good kids who will graduate and go on to become leaders as engineers, scientists, doctors, lawyers, CEOs, teachers, coaches, and so on, even if as a whole they prove to be only mediocre athletes when compared to the sports stables of other schools. GT doesn’t need a bunch of future want-to-be NFL or NBA stars who are just biding their time pretending to be students. And any GT alumni who just want winning teams, or even think athletics is equally important to character and academics, is dead wrong on their priorities.

I think the new AD needs to push to get Tech back into the SEC. That would solve every one of the current problems over time. Tech was the lynchpin of the old SEC, and needs to be back home. That they left and why should be consigned to the past. If I were the new AD, I would make the trip to Athens and sit down with McGarity and work out a deal to get him to sponsor Tech as the 15th SEC team. If Clemson came along, it would give the SEC two teams each from SC, GA, ALA, TN and MISS. Talk about stadium filling games …..

CPJ can get another job somewhere else, just because GT fans are unhappy doesn’t mean another school will not hire him. Some can blame that GT needs a basketweaving degree to get the 5 stars in there but that is part of the problem.

Dwyer, Thomas, Morgan, Nesbitt and Burnett got it done. GT needs better recruiting and lately better coaching.

When I do see players like Jamal Golden playing their hearts out, I do have hope but I do indeed believe the current staff thinks GT is suppose to be a DIVIAA school. Now it is up to the alumni if they are going to let that happen. I

Drad was a good hire at the time. He under took the process of building the indoor practice facility, womens softball field as well as the new McCamish Pavilion. Two bad things, gave PJ a contract extension and raise in ‘08 after he beat Ugay, then went and ran his mouth to PJ after the NCAA told him not to say anything re: the investigation. The Tech Fund, I have no feelings about it,I just pay it. I believe Drad has seen that the “cash cow” which runs most college AD’s,football, is not contributing what it should.

I think all conferences should put a rule in place against hiring from another school for the same position. I don’t think it is right when one school in a conference hires another team’s (in the same conference) coach. They should either go outside the conference or hire a coordinator or associate coach from within the conference. Same goes for AD. Should be similar to a “Do Not Compete” clause in a normal employment contract.

I see the trolls are out in force today. If you want to write the 10 Million Dollar Check to buy out CPJ then by all means please do but you will be wasting your money. Lets say for one minute I dont think he is the right man and write that check…you would be committing suicide of the program. we have a ton of young talent and many redshirts coming up. If we can add some depth and get a defense we will be fine. One of the trolls wanted to take the red shirt of the Moore Kid and let him play QB the rest of the year,,,with 4 games left. Stay on the Sofa.

I wish the AD good luck and thank him for his service to the Institute and we will find another…life will go on…he did leave the facilites in a whole lot better state of being…

I said that I thought we would win a NC in 5 years under CPJ…I still believe that but I may have to adjust my time line….

Mr BUG

October 29th, 2012

I think it would be prudent to give cpj a couple of more years to right the ship, or at least until we finally payoff Hewitt’s contract. That would at least free up some money to buy off cpj current contract if he shows no sign of improvement. But lets face it, if we clean house now and start from the ground up it will take at least 2 to 3 years for the new system (presuming it is not based on the TO) to start being efficient. At the same time trying to payoff two former coaches. That would severely burden the athletic dept. financially. I think the new AD will realize this.

Excuses are Easy has a point in one important area. Stanford doesn’t make excuses and PJ is a crappy coach. As for “UGA Engineering” keep dreaming. You will NEVER be on par with GT….EVER. Just like Tech will never rival you in housing, interior decorating, home economics and playground management degrees. You have your specialty, we have ours. The Board of Regents is stacked to give you a medical school but you’ll be in Tech’s wake for anything remotely related to Engineering forever. DRad’s tenure has been a trainwreck and it isn’t news to any fan that he needed to go. No surprise that he leaves a disaster behind – he is an SEC guy. Good luck to Clemson. They’ll need it. I hope that I’m reading the same news story about PJ today. The team won’t be any worse for wear and interim coaching will make no difference in how the season finishes. I don’t see another win until at least next season. Too bad for the players, they work hard. Props to UGA for wanting to win. It’s more than I can say for the current coaching at Tech.

i’d like to see GT hire an AD with a strong enough personality to hire a good young defensive coordinator AND an offensive coordinator, both of whom have a reputation as good recruiters.

i like cpj but … 1) the recruiting must improve 2) the defense needs major help, including a move back to a 4-3 base defense 3) the offensive playcalling needs to be opened up, with more short passes and fewer runs up the middle

also, i hope the players WAKE UP and finish the season strong.

As a lifelong GT fan I am glad to see D-Rad leave, I was excited about the CPJ hire at first but anyone with any sense at all can see he was most successful with Chan’s players as they were better all around players as evident by their play in the NFL. CPJ will never be successful at Tech with his offense and it’s time for Bud to replace him after the season and hire a coach that will run a pro style offense and will be able to get better players as a result of it. Any idiot can see that the only high schools that run the option are smaller schools with small talent pools, the high schools that produce the most talent run pro style offenses and because of that there is a huge talent pool available and since the top tier teams can’t sign every player available some of them there are players available for schools like GT. These players may not be the top 20 at their position but even I can throw a football better than Tevin Washington so anything would be an upgrade.

Very few athletes at Tech graduate with Engineering degrees, it’s just too damned hard even if you aren’t in athletics. There’s a reason Tech is in the top 5 in most programs. It ain’t easy. The wonderful Mr. Crecine gave us an academic diversion though in Science, Technology and Culture, Public Policy, just about anything in Ivan Allen, so there are ways to get around competitive SAT scores and GPA’s. Leadership is the issue. Greatness in anything comes from leadership and the expectations from those who lead. UGA fans sing this song more than anyone. Tech doesn’t have the fan base UGA has because to so many of our students, football is foreign. They take their degrees and head back to Korea, India and China. At least they’re employable. People don’t understand what it’s like to earn a degree from Tech unless you’ve lived it. It’s a special place where we see life outside of the stadium. That’s a tough pill to swallow UGA fans. God bless them.

Now can we hire an AD with an vested interest in Tech. Out of all the Management grads who are athletes is there one that can manage our A Department with a vested interest in Tech?

John Sally, Mark Price, etc, etc. Bobby Cremins interim AD, grooming the permanent selection.

Then let’s build that winning program we know is possible in Atlanta with a very valuable and versatile Management degree available (we are not all engineers or rocket scientists) and a strong, disciplined, winning football program.

This is the start, it will take a while, but at least it has began.

Y’all are true believers/supporters of your program….I admire that, truly. However, Rad is going to a place with one of the strongest fan bases in the country, and one with tons of resources. I am not a Clemson fan, but IPTAY is super-strong, and they double ya’lls fan count at every game. It is kinda like ya’ll wanna win, but you don’t want to pay the price. And no, I am not talking about bringing in thugs, etc. I’m just talking about making GT a destination for top tier players. It’s not even a question of who is a better recruiter, Gailey or PJ. Here’s a list of Tech players recruited by Gailey currently playing in the NFL: Morgan Burnett, Tashard Choice, Jonathan Dwyer, Andrew Gardner, Calvin Johnson, Michael Johnson, Dawan Landry, Derrick Morgan, Bebe Thomas, and Vance Walker. Most of these guys are starting or have significant playing time. PJ won his first season with a lot of these players. Chan’s main problem, he never recuited a QB. He hitched his wagon to Reggie Ball and went down in flames with him.

Someone said it earlier, you’ll never have any depth trying to recruit with this option system. The defense doesn’t get to practice against a quality offense so that hurts them. They practice against a scout team because our offense doesn’t know how to run a regular offense. With a pro-style offense, you’ll be able to get a lot of 3-star kids who want a chance to prove they can make it to the next level and sprinkle in a few 4 and 5 stars. Coach up the 3-star players and you’ve got a chance to win consistently.

It will be tough for any coach at Tech to win consistently. I talked with Fridge one night when he was the OC under O’Leary at a signing day gathering in O’Keefe gym. He was very candid about how the football staff hated the administration because of how difficult they made it for them to recruit. Tech’s standards are way above the NCAA standards, and there were cases where a top recruit wanted to come to Tech and they had to let him go because the administration said no.

We need to ask Steve Spurrier how he was able to do it at Duke. He coached at Tech for a year in 1979 so he should be willing to help out. Or we should ask Brian Kelly at Notre Dame or Harbaugh how he did it at Stanford. What we really need is an AD who has the balls to stand up to the administration and make it possible to get some of these top recruits eligible at Tech. I’m all for getting Bill Curry in here. I went to Tech while he was the coach and went to class with players like Pat Swilling, Reg Rutland (changed his name in the NFL), John Davis, Ricardo Ingram, Ted Roof, etc.

A couple of points on the debt of AA Department. It was Dave Braine and George O’leary who wanted to expand the the stadium to 55k back in 1999-2000. I sat in a meeting with a bunch of Dodd and Curry former players, Braine and O’leary as they made the pitch to the “old guard” to expand the stadium. I was at Tech when we reduced the south endzone since that end only filled up when we played the SEC teams. Braine was the idoit who gave Paul Hewitt the Lifetime rollover contract after getting to the Championship game in 2004, he was rumored to be heading to another school, (typical hot coach get’s big pay raise). Rad came in 2006 from LSU and changed the fund raising from the AT Fund to the Tech Fund to get more dollars. Alot AT givers stopped giving and bought tickets in the non-Tech fund seats and gave their money to the various “Schools” on campus. Hurt big time. We have had several big time donors step up and pay $$$$ for the new facilities, but we are not getting as much in the AT Fund. DRad made the mistake of giving Johnson the extension after 2008 season, as again rumors where that Auburn was looking at him (again rumors not truth, but still) So he gave him an extension, we are stuck with. All the non-revenue sports are generally top notch, BB will improve and football, I’ve seen worse under Curry and Ross, so we are what we are. I have met DRad and found him to be knowledgeable and straight forward, and truthfully, how many of you would have not told Johnson about the NCAA investigation over $312 in T-shirts? I would guess, we all would have said something about it. It is ironic that we cannot get a Sports Management program at Ga Tech, but UGA can get an engineering program. Homer Rice tried in the 80’s but he was shot down by the alumni and the BOR. And if all you guys want to buy out Johnson’s contract, just forward your check to Bobby Dodd Way. As others have said, once a Jacket, always a Jacket. THWG!!! One more thing …. How ’bout them Dawgs? Pi$$ on them!!!!

But i would still rather go with a seasoned veteran than the hottest new thing, like we did for DRad. The new guy, whether hired this year or next, will definitely need to put the FB coaching staff on notice…..it’s past time to prove your worth and also to check your ego and do the PR work that CPJ seems to disdain. I’m not a Tech fan, but I’ve been saying this for the last two years: the triple option caught everyone off-guard the first year or two, but the last two or three years opposing coaches have adjusted and it doesn’t fool anyone. Miami is still rebuilding and the balance of power in the ACC rests with Clemson and Florida St. (which is why I’m not surprised Radokovich took a job at Clemson). Tech fans should look at it this way, you had 1 1/2 “glory” years in football under Radokovich and you got a couple new buildings out of the deal.

Coach Johnson should move back down to AA where he can dominate with the triple option and not worry about having to adjust his coaching style.

“True Student Athletes” ToemeetsLeather, you do understand that GT had a scandal before the recent probation that was all about playing ineligible athletes, lots of them. Then move forward to a separate scandal in which GT had its title vacated for playing ineligible athlete against Clemson in the ACC championship Game. And yes, that athlete was probably the difference maker in that game that Clemson lost. When someone from GT or UNC uses that line these days, people aren’t stupid enough to buy it. GT is only slightly above UNC is completely tarnishing that myth.
How many student athletes had played when they were ineligible in the episode years before the one that cost the title? I remember GT saying it was simply a matter of the institution not fully understanding the rule. Good ole GT pleading ignorance, which is no defense.

I posted recruiting rankings since 2002 to present back on page one or two. For you people that STILL have trouble wrapping your brains around this, here it goes:

Georgia Tech has higher academic standards than the schools located around them that they must compete with for athletes. Yes there is a large talent pool in the area. A talent pool that is open to most schools, but limited when it comes to GT. CPJ’s recruiting classes have been, at worst, on par with Chan Gailey’s. That’s including being under probation lately. That shuts down the “CPJ can’t recruit” argument.

Question: What type of offense does South Carolina, UGA, Alabama, Tennessee, etc run? You want GT to go to a more conventional offense, and compete against these schools for athletes? Only some of which would even be eligible at GT? How do you figure that would improve things? We tried it under Gailey, got worse results than with CPJ by far.

You want to look longingly back at the George O’Leary era? Don’t get me wrong, I loved that period too. But, remember the failures of the defenses in those golden years? Why did GT lose four games in Joe Hamilton’s senior year? I guess having a more conventional offense to prepare against in practice just wasn’t enough then.

Having a unique system at a unique school isn’t a bad thing. I know it’s not a normal offense, so when there are struggles, it’s easy to make it a scapegoat. But the fact is, even with a weak-armed QB that may be a step slow to run this offense, the team is putting up 400+ yards and 30+ points a game. Same as they used to do under Friedgen, and way more than any time under Gailey.

There are downsides to CPJ, and I outlined them back on page one or two. However, I’d take the occasional down year with CPJ knowing there’s a much higher upside than a steady 7-5 every year type of coach. When was the last outright conference championship before CPJ arrived?

Tech has a great university that will never be effected by any UGA engineering program. you just make lousy coaching hires. There are are only so many kids that are interested in running the option on very play, and that limits the athletes interested in going there, not your academics. Then, when it all comes to a head, you default to the old “academics” myth. I know lots of high school kids that have gone there, and they were not “calculus dudes”. So get over it, and get a life. Put those GT skills to work, and hire a competent man. Then and only then will you get your program competitive again.

The prior academic incident in late 90’s involved many athlete’s not making progress on their degree, this was the same time Tech switched from the Quarter system to the Semester system and caused many students, not just athletes to redo the hours and schedule. Those guys just had not made the progress, it was not similar to the “cheating” scandal at UNC or the academic fraud at other places. As has been stated before, we at Tech do not have the “breadth” of majors that many students may want to persue. We don’t have journalism, communications, African-American Studies, Family and Child Development, “Arts and Letters” (very popular major at ND). We don’t have PE majors, Apartment housing management. No Excercise Science and Nutrition majors, social work majors. That’s our problem. We are an Institute of Technology, so most of our majors are going to have a slant to technology than the other schools have. We have no true Liberal Arts degree as Stanford and Duke have, yes they have rigorous academic requirements to get in, but their majors are not similar to ours. Yes our SA’s have to take two semesters of advanced math and science, I am sure that the “Arts and Letters” major’s at ND are not taking a math class. An so what if Survey of Calculus is not transferable as a Calculus course, it is still math, so what if the SA has to take Earth Science, it’s a science class. All managment/Business Admin majors, whether SA or not take these classes, and our College is ranked in the top 40. Facts are facts. Again, if the BOR would give us a PE major we could get those SA’s but sadly, that is not going to happen. THWG

geriatric blogger, every degree at Tech requires at least a year of calculus. There are no liberal arts degrees. That is the difference between Tech, Stanford, Notre Dame, etc. Those do have liberal arts degrees to offer. Until Tech can offer Turfgrass Mangement or P.E. degrees (like UGA), it will remain limited in the number of quality athletes it can attract. According to the AJC, its football players have the highest SAT scores of any public university in the country. Even under Gailey, Tech was never in the top-40 in recruiting. Perhaps that is by design – - to provide no real in-state competion for UGA recruiting.

CPJ is here for awhile like him or not. It would cost in excess of 10 Million according to Schultz to buy him out now. Not gonna happen the Athletic Dept doesn’t have the bread. His lack of recruiting is whats killing him. Get better players, win more games. There have been attempts through the years to ammend the curriculum at TECH with some but little real progress. I remember Coach Dodd asked for two changes and never got them. Finally years later we got rid of the Calc but not much else. The Big universities allow you to get as good an education as you want or as sorry as you want. You can take pre-med or hotel management or parks and recreation . Tech doesn’t offer that option so it is harder to recruit, We need a great recruiter, Heck good enought talent I could win with the single wing.

I must respectfully disagree with you who say there are no liberal arts majors at Tech. I received my b.s. from Tech in HTS (history, technology, and society). It’s sort of a hybrid history/sociology major. The Ivan Allen college offers majors in economics, STAC (science, technology, and culture), and a number of other liberal arts areas. Granted, these programs tend to focus on technology, and students are still required to take the rigorous core curriculum as everyone else.

Liberal arts are a small (but lively) body on campus.

Also, not sure why everyone is calling for PJ’s head. GT is doing about as good as you can expect. We’ll occasionally have a 10 win season. Otherwise, we can expect 7 or 8 win seasons, with a few lower percentage winning seasons now and again. It’s the nature of college football, and the climate at the Institute. Tech is a tough school, so it’s going to be especially tough to consistently recruit top tier talent.

I’m a Tech alumnus (and current graduate student). I’ve got season tickets and will buy them again next year. We lose some, but we also win in some exciting ways, and have had two very close losses this year.

DRad was very good for Tech.

Let me remind you that the other finalist at the time DRad go the job was Bill Curry. If any of you think BC would have been a better AD, let’s just agree to disagree :)

DRad built facilities and raised the level of competition in many programs, including football. He inherited the Paul Hewitt mess from Dave Braine.

Women’s Tennis won a NC under DRad. The Women’s BBall program is at an all time high. Golf is kicking butt. Softball is a force and has great new facilities. CBG appears to have the Men’s hoops on the right track.

DRad inherited serious financial challenges and created innovative solutions. Best of luck in your future endeavors, DRad – many of us appreciate your commitment to GT.

GF Jacket, I do not contest your facts, however, I know there are athletes that go or have gone there that require academic assistance. You, nor any similar institution would hang those kids out to dry without that assistance. And while your (average) SAT scores are indeed high, how is that relevant when you have a player graduation rate at the bottom of your conference. Some scores were not so hot. The truth of the matter is that there are few student athletes in the mold of Calvin, and it also takes the rest of them to make the program go, and GT is prepared to deal with that as they have been historically. You’ve won championships with those same standards, so why keep using it as an excuse for mediocrity. If you had a coach that runs a system that interests more kids, you increase your selection pool whether or not you have so called higher acceptance standards. It worked then, it will work now.

“fish stinks from the head”, major sports of men’s football and basketball are in shambles. Note Football pays most of the bills for many other sports and if football in not attracting fans and donations, the entire sports program will decline…
Rad has built some nice facilities, a nice facad (sp?), but the product on the court or on the field is mediocre. Good for him to go, perhaps he is tired of Atlanta politics (as reference in “A Man In Full”, wasn’t it a fictionalized GT player that was involved, I know , a long time ago, but the analogy still holds). Clemson is a wholle different kettle of fis,: a fanatic fan base with little else to do except watch the water recede in Lake Hartwell, with little academic pretenses.

Yes, academics, etc. are big factors. however, my Tech buddies, some of ya’ll are missing the point. Tech did not just start being a tough school, it has been a tough school. Deep down inside, many of you know the problem is deeper than that. There is a lack of support for the program by and large (not talking ’bout the truly faithful, like Supersize and some others.) Although everyone has a down year, it is like ya’lls football program is kind of floundering and nobody really knows what to do. It may be time for new blood; somebody who can get it back going again. Tech has too long and proud of a tradition to let folks argue on blogs about everything from too-tough academics, wrong coach, etc. None of that will wash…..ya’ll have proved yopuselves in the past with some very dominating programs. I know we at UGA draw the ire of many, but I still honestly believe if our overall program was like things are for y’all now, we would do something. Ya’ll are going to need to go after a first-class coach. There are some out there. And you cannot say it will not make a difference. If (and he is our enemy, I know) Spurrier was there, he would build ya’ll into an ACC champ. Ya’ll have a history. Look at South Carolina…..never done much at all and he has them rocking. I’m not saying ya’ll could get a Spurrier, but you could certainly go after a top-notch person, and get back to playing Tech football. I know, you still could trip us up this year…..but that is not what I am talking about. I am talking about a once proud tradition that has faltered, and has folks wondering “Why??”

October 29th, 2012
3:30 pm

schools in Georgia are Obama schools. Their primary focus is hiring more teachers to cheat to improve the test scores, so they qualify for more Obama money, to hire more cheating teachers. See DeKalb County and APS system.

For this reason, the local football talent is poorly educated or simply uneducated.

GT like ND, Stanford, Virginia, UGA ( yes, UGA) has to go to NC, TN, Alabama, Florida Texas to get talent, with local kids signing with Auburn, Alabama, SC and UT and KY.

also, GT needs to BUILD their brand with summer camps that DO ATTRCT KIDS from wider area. With the right HC, within 4 years, GT can return to. 8-3, 9-2 squad in time.

this prescription will lead GT to where they hope to be …… Mediocre.

No sarcasm here. DRad is the Athletics Director, not just the Men’s football director. He has helped build other sports programs at Tech to national prominence.

Most people only care about football – is that you? No shame in that, it’s really the only consistent money maker at Tech. Hopefully hoops will regain that status soon.

Honestly, college athletics, particularly women’s sports in the post Title IX era, are an extremely important part of young people’s lives in their formative years. Many of these opportunities, i.e. collegiate team sports, did not exist for young women thirty years ago. Football funds most of this, but we are a better country for it.

Like the as says, ‘most NCAA athletes go pro in a field other than sports…” But they become better colleagues, neighbors and leaders because of the experience. DRad’s leadership allowed Tech to make great strides in this area.

Yes, yes, I know I’m leaving a Brain-Trust for a Tractor-Repair facility……but the football program is on the rise there……and they actually have some neat perks on campus there……like green grass and trees. Sure, they are still living in the past with Frank Howard and Danny Ford, but we do still get to play Duke, Wake and Maryland every year….and throw in a Furman, Presby and The Citadel, and we’re at least garonteed (sp) a winning season. And look, the truth is, I just didn’t have the heart to fire Paula and his triple fumble offense……after all, who would I hire in his place that might actually win? Petrino?…Lou Holtz?….Ditka, Cowher, and Gruden all said….”uh, no thanks, it’s a coaching graveyard….” Anyway, fellas, I wish you the best. Hope to see you at the Varsity 3-4 times a year.

Granted, this year’s football season has been almost a total bust, but I’m not convinced that the program is on a long-term downward decline. (Another season like this one … and then I’ll be convinced.) It’s still early to know how the men’s b’ball program is going to fare, but I certainly like the enthusiasm and the recruiting in the program. Frankly, if you look at the entire sports program, Tech has been among the conference leaders in virtually every sport for the last few years with the exception of men’s b’ball, swimming, and track & field. Tennis and volleyball have had their ups and downs (no pun intended), but I would rank our overall sports program as high as any in the conference over the last four years.

best of luck to D Rad, wish him well at Clemson.
No huge loss, there are thousands of people who could be an AD. for every 1 AD job there are 1000 people who would want the job. Job is not nthat hard.
Raise money
Balance budgets

I may even apply.

This can only be GREAT news for Tech. Now if they would just find a REAL football coach that will help UGA keep Georgia players in Georgia. The is NO reason for Tech to be this bad with all the talent there is in this state, NONE. Tech should be challenging for the ACC title EVERY year. Keep your head up Tech things are looking up.

Agreed ToccoaDawg. Unfortunately people are shunned if they’re not a UGA fan, even at a very young age, by their peers. Saw it going on Saturday night at a restaurant here in PTC. Pretty sad that people have that sort of mentality to flat out pick on others over a school.

“their” should be “they are” or” they’re”. 1990 or GT joe or GT schmoe or whatever you go by this hour.

“HAHAHA” indicates you are juvenile and “butt hurt” indicates experience on your part. Sorry for you child. Get the parents involved before you’ve been corrupted beyond redemption.

What’s the good word? DRad made a FEW good moves during his tenure. The football program hasn’t been one of them. The next move would require admitting he made the wrong hire in CPJ. His exit indicates he couldn’t admit it. Hate it for him when gets to place where fan expectations include double digit wins every year rather every decade.

I’ll still be sitting in the north end zone, though; a GT fan no matter what or how bad. And next year the elevator line won’t be as long. :-) Still pulling for the players.

Certainly would love “The Goose” as HC but he’s still young. I doubt Whisenhunt would leave the NFL unless he’s on the way out. I’d also love to see the “Fridge” back on GT’s sideline. Too much speculation. I’m not sure he would be good at recruiting except maybe getting JUCO transfers which is hard for Tech.

I’m afraid the team has quit on CPJ. Sorry, that’s my perception. Having said that the dogs should just overlook this Tech team because they don’t care about beating UGA. That’s called sarcasm but please continue with the insults. Please give it all you’ve got. Go Jackets!

I checked in hoping to see if johnson mighta been fired but this is the next best thing. I don’t envy johnson’s position at this point but he brought it on himself. He should have started Lee after the Miami game but is still struggling with it now. Guess what paul, it is too late. The ship is nearly under and you as the captain had better go with it. Bon voyage!

Dave Braine: “Georgia Tech can win nine or 10 games. They will never do that consistently. That’s my feeling … because of the type of program this is.”

He was right, and he was basically fired for it. And I’d rather Tech have “the type of program this is” than be a football mill. Or basketball mill. Or puppy mill.

Go ahead, haters. Pile on.

Ekim56….I have said it before & I’ll die believing it. All any of us as fans us have the right to expect of our chosen school or team is that they be competitive on a fairly consistent basis. That they put themselves in a position to win. That they be competitive enough to win the occasional title, maybe the big ‘un, the Crystal Football. To do this takes focus, determination, dedication, desire & heart. If a team does this & plays up to near their potential consistently, how could we dare ask for more. I, for one, would be very pleased to watch, support & cheer for this type of team. It would be nice to be on top of the heap. But what goes up comes down, Even the mighty Alabama can not hope to stay on top forever. All I ask is that I see my team play hard, be competitive and give thier best effort. If one does that, there is no shame in not winning. If one gives his best effort, he can stand tall & proud! This is all I have the right to ask for, TRY!!!

He may have made some decent capital improvement decisions in reference to facilities, but he made some bad hires and locked Tech into some very expensive contracts to get out of. The football program under his watch has gradually sunk into the abyss under his watch and will take a few years to come back. A terrible D, an inconsistent O and no recruits coming in to speak of(especially on the D line). Also, the talent will continue to dwindle due to the fact the better athletes don’t want to play in the option and I can’t blame them. Thanks Dan for jumping ship once you helped sink it!

I, too, would rather win with dignity and high standards like a Stanford, for example. An occasional conference title and consistent wins without NCAA violations and bad behavior is fine for me, and I suspect, a large number of Tech supporters. NO top-tier academic university in the last three decades has produced a consistent top-tier football program (regular NC contender) and under the current NCAA, no school will. But CPJ needs to step up and represent the Institute better, and also field more competitive teams. We have looked sloppy and even a bit like quitters, and that is never acceptable.

Never mind the option, just execute! The offense was producing points, but we have not made good adjustments during games on either side of the ball, and the players have not been executing well at all. Missed blocks, dropped passes, consistently horribly thrown passes, and repeated missed tackles are both bad coaching and bad playing. Do your jobs, coaches, and reclaim your team. You’ve obviously lost it this season.
