UPDATED: Tech drilled by BYU, 41-17

The defense was picked apart and battered. The offense had no magic. The special teams, save one historic kickoff return, was largely a hindrance.

Saturday, Georgia Tech lost to BYU 41-17 at Bobby Dodd Stadium in a game that contained little mystery.

“We pretty much got our tails whipped,” coach Paul Johnson said. “It was disappointing. I think we got whipped in all three phases of the game.”

With a chance to even their record and build on a convincing win over Boston College a week ago, the Yellow Jackets (3-5) continued their flailing season. Tech gave up 40 or more points for the fourth time in the past five games, had a punt blocked and failed to produce an offensive touchdown for the first time since the 2008 Chick-fil-A Bowl loss to LSU. In hopes of reviving the offense, Johnson sent in backup quarterback Vad Lee late in the third quarter. To rousing cheers, he drove the Jackets for a field goal on his first drive, but produced 16 yards of offense in his final two possessions.

Just to qualify for its 16th consecutive bowl, Tech will have to win three of its final four games. The Jackets finish with Maryland, North Carolina, Duke and Georgia. For a team that lost by 24 points at home, none of those register as expected wins.

Saturday, the defining difference between BYU and Tech was their performance on third down. The Cougars picked up first downs on 9 of 16 third downs, while the Jackets struck out on 10 third-down conversion attempts.

Defensively, Tech reverted to the form that led to the firing of defensive coordinator Al Groh. After holding Boston College to a 1-of-9 effort on third downs last Saturday, the Jackets permitted quarterback Riley Nelson to extend drives left and right with completions.

Interim defensive coordinator Charles Kelly mixed up coverages and blitzes that occasionally produced results. He sent seven defenders at Nelson on a 3rd-and-8 on the game’s opening possession, but Nelson answered it with a 15-yard completion.

One of Tech’s highlights, a 22-yard interception return for a first-quarter touchdown by safety Isaiah Johnson, came on a third down in which Tech rushed three and dropped eight into coverage. But the Jackets couldn’t disrupt Nelson with any frequency and also missed a slew of tackles, a problem that plagued the defense under Groh but had abated in the Boston College game.

Tech also had trouble with BYU running back Jamaal Williams, a 17-year-old freshman who dinged the Jackets for 107 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

The BYU defense, ranked No. 8 in the country against the run, needed no help, but the Jackets abetted the Cougars with penalties, missed blocks and faulty reads on the option. Not counting a kneeldown at the end of the first half, Tech had nine possessions and couldn’t hold the ball for more than six plays on seven of them. The Jackets ran just 47 plays, a little more than half the 91 they ran against Boston College and the fewest of any game in Johnson’s tenure. BYU’s 38:59 time of possession was also an opponent high in the Johnson era.

“It’s obvious that we’ve got to do a lot better,” Lee said. “We’ve got to clean up a lot of things.”

The big plays that this offense needs to expand its margin for error never materialized. Tech had been averaging six plays per game of 20 yards or more. Saturday, the Cougars held them to one, a 22-yard run by A-back Robbie Godhigh.

“They make you earn it, and we weren’t good enough to earn it,” Johnson said. “We’d self-inflict wounds.”

Asked if this was the worst offensive game of his five-year tenure, Johnson replied, “I’m sure it is.”

Only Isaiah Johnson’s interception return and Jamal Golden’s 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown – the Jackets’ first such score since 1998 – kept Tech in the game, which was 24-14 in BYU’s favor at halftime. The game tilted in the third quarter when quarterback Tevin Washington, pressured by BYU end Ezekiel Ansah, threw an interception deep in Tech territory that was returned to the Tech 2-yard line. A one-yard touchdown run by Williams pushed BYU to a 31-14 lead with 3:43 left in the third quarter and released any remaining suspense.

The Jackets will return to work Monday, trying to find answers that have eluded them for the larger part of eight games.

“I don’t know,” said Johnson, asked to explain how his team could be playing beneath expectations. I don’t have an explanation for you.”

Doesn’t matter who starts. This team is done. CPJ is done. He needs to be fired at the end of the season, the gig is up. Pathetic. BYU has one of the worst offenses in the country. And the offense today did nothing.

Sorry to say it, but BYU is the kind of team Tech fans would like to have as our own. Smart, disciplined play, fundamentally sound and taking advantage of the other teams mistakes and weaknesses.

After 4 years this is discouraging that a non-ranked team can expose us as really a poor fundamental team in many areas, Offense, Defense and Special teams. Does BYU have better athletes? I don’t know but they made it look that way today.

As a positive, at least we played with some emotion and Vlad showed he could perfrom…sad that’s the sole positives I could see.

BYU ranks No. 8 nationally against the run, allowing only 93.13 yards per game. This includes against Boise State, Notre Dame, and Oregon State. Tech had 117 yards, so far less than average, but better. BYU’s QB is so streaky that their offense is crapshoot.

But if the ship is sinking, where’s the Big 10, Big East, and Big 12 ships? Not much better.

Boston Kid,

You are kidding right? Big East – yeah terrible. But Big 12? You ever heard of Kansas State or Oklahoma. Texas Tech having a good year. Each of those teams would handily beat any ACC team. ACC – All Crap Conference.

Also, BYU was ranked earlier in the season, and they lost 3 of their four games by a total of 7 points. And the fourth game was tied going into the fourth quarter. They were ahead of Notre Dame until they botched a couple plays in the fourth quarter, at South Bend. So there’s some over reacting here. It’s kinda what we’re good at.

Our offense was terrible. Our defense was exhausted. Our special teams had nothing special about them. This ship is sinking and Johnson is at the helm. It pains me to no end, but this is painful to watch.

Johnson, thanks TW for his service, hand the ball over the Vad and get ready for next year. And by the way, recruiting does matter. As does inspiration and leadership.

I don’t see any reason to look forward to the future with this team. Defense, Special Teams, and now the Offense looks horrible. BYU’s 17 year old running back is better than anyone Tech has. #47 on BYU was a better defensive player than anyone Tech has. No hope for the talent on the Jackets and the offensive play calling is pathetic. Kickoff coverage, pass rush, pass protection ????

BYU has a great defense, so I thought that the points might be hard to come by, but I didn’t think the defense would play that poorly. The D-line is a mess and the LBs aren’t talented enough to overcome their deficiencies. The DBs have their moments and letdowns, but without pressure, their job is much harder.

I agree the ACC is a weak conference, but to say putting T.T Oklahoma or K.S against say Florida State and these teams beating them handily is a stretch.

Boston Kid

Yeah, I’ll admit the Big 12 was the best of those three, I almost didn’t put them in, but my point is every conference has a couple good teams at best and most the others struggle. At least the ACC has Florida State and Clemson, and usually VT. Kansas State is up (but historically no), Oklahoma almost always good. OSU and Texas a little down, it balances out. No argument on the Big 10 there huh? Outside Ohio State (which was miserable recently until Urban Meyer came) and an always overrated MIchigan, they have nothing either.

It’s tough to realize that you really just aren’t a very good football team. And today it was obvious, this team is not even average. Since CPJ will never abandon the option, it is time to find some pretty dramatic new wrinkles or approaches to the option because it isn’t fooling anyone and we don’t have the talent to beat teams straight up. BYU was clearly the better team, but they should not be that much better.

October 27th, 2012

Well, folks I’m back as promised. Here’s why we lost:
1. Poor execution on offense, defense, special teams.
2. Poor 3rd down conversion rate: 0-10
3. Poor 3rd down defense: 9-16
4. Poor tackling & missed tackles. Williams & Nelson looked like All-Americans… nobody tackled anybody square and center, wrapping them up. All I saw was glances and shoves.
5. 4th quarter burnout. Like every game this season.
6. No consistent drives on offense. Hence, no TOP. Therefore, see #5.
7. No pass rush.
8. No kicking game. Not a single kickoff into the end zone, and missed a chip shot field goal.
9. Absolutely horrendous kick return coverage.
10. No passing game. Didn’t I say we needed to come out passing at the start. And Tevin needs to throw to his left side, not the right side where we have weaker receivers & A-backs.
11. Vad Lee disappointed with his execution of the triple option. Bad reads all around.
12. Of course, he only got in because Tevin made a bunch of missed reads.
13. Zero blocking by A-backs and wide receivers.
14. No big plays on offense.
15. Poor conditioning of defense. Players aren’t prepared to play 4 quarters.
16. No excitement/support from the sideline.
17. Lack of size and speed (read: competitive athletes) on both sides of the ball. No talent, no playmakers, no anything.
18. Poor coaching on special teams.
19. Poor coaching on defense.
20. In fact, poor coaching overall.
21. Mismanagement of the athletic department.
22. Lack of fan interest.

Of course it’s not ok to get handled like this, we all know this, I shouldn’t have to spell that out. It was a beat down. But BYU is better than their record/ranking. People are acting like we got killed by a horrible team, but I’m saying BYU is at least ok.

But this is all irrelevant. Either way, to be relevant, this team needs an overhaul.

Full Metal Jacket

BYU is a good, solid football team but there is no way that Tech should lose by that much in that fashion. I’ve been hesitant to call for Lee to start at QB because he’s an unknown quantity, but Tevin Washington making repeated mistakes and then laughing and smiling about them, which he has done all season long, is just not acceptable.CPJ may be right about not starting Lee until he earns it in practice, but at what point do you demote your starter when he can’t get it done in games? It is time to forget about “salvaging” this season and open up all positions to begin preparing for next year. And if, by some miracle, Tech ended up bowl-eligible, they would be wise to decline it.

Conditioning is a real issue on this team as well. Our physical and mental disintegration in the fourth quarter (and 2 OTs this year) is inexcusable. That said, in several games we were not even in the game by the fourth quarter.

You may not remember but D Rad wanted to hire a young Will Muschamp but some of the too perfect GT crowd wouldn’t allow it because Muschamp attended UGA. I don’t think Florida cared. Another chance was Charley Strong of Louisville, he would have set this city on fire. But we got CPJ, I’m ok with that but CPJ has to surrond himself with a strong Staff and upgrade recruiting. Will his ego allow him to do it? I don’t know.

DRad has got to go. He butchered the basketball coaching hire and had to settle for someone that was being run off at Dayton. He fired the volleyball coach and brought in an old friend from LSU. The old coach went to Marquette and is doing great and the coach he brought here has done poorly and had the first losing season in years last season. He keeps giving Danny Hall new contracts even though we know he is going to lose to the #3 or 4 seed in the regionals every year with a top ten team. He keeps building and spending but keeps running off fans with his bad hires. Yes, PJ needs to go but we aren’t going to do any better if DRad is allowed to hire the next coach.

So, how are the Paul Johnson apologists going to spin this disaster? Does he still “apparently seem” to be a great coach? His supposedly vaunted offense (which we’ve heard “wasn’t the problem”) had 157 yards, 10 first downs, and converted on ZERO third-downs today. Oh, it also scored ZERO points unless you count the field goal that Vad Lee (who Johnson didn’t play until the game was essentially out-of-hand) led the team to.

How much longer are Tech’s fans, alumni, and administration going to tolerate this trainwreck?

@Biff: agree completely. DRad has screwed up with his staff big time. And not just at the high-level. He hired John Sisk, the current strength/conditioning coach this summer, and the results are in front of you. Letting Paul Hewitt go was a 50-50 decision, but given that our finances were not in good shape, we should not have given him the payout.

I don’t know about all the other long time Tech fans, but I am embarrassed. P.J. before the season started stated that he thought he had one of his better teams and was very optimistic. He hired a new special teams coach and this was the breakout year for the 3 4 defense taught by the master Al Groh. This was also Tevins Sr. year.

This is one of the worse Tech teams I have ever seen fielded. This team has no heart, and will give up at any point in a game. Recruiting the wrong players or coaching shortcomings either or both are the blame. No one coaching special teams lets their players run out of their lanes. Guess what ours special teams always seem to wad up the middle and any crease is exploited. Techniques on tackling is deplorable, no one seems to want to lock up any more. I at an old age can probably still throw a football better than T.W. Give anyone 8 to 10 sec to throw the ball and a receiver will be found. Blitz the q.b. once and get burned on a shovel pass? P.J. has a pretty good defensive recruiting class this year, but unless defense is stressed as an important element of the game every year, his fate is doomed.

He will be given another year to prove he is the coach for G. T. but if he does not produce next year, he will be gone. Stubborn is good only as long as it wins games.

As a TECH Fan, I remain a TECH fan.
This is a sad season, and fans as true as
me don’t really know the reason.

Some in comment sections like this
say poor recruiting or poor coaching
or a coach who recruits poorly.
I, as contrarian, suggest that the players
were good when recruited and the coach
was good when hired. Something changed.

Historically, I went through losing seasons;
Bill Curry and Pepper Rogers. I liked them
both. Bobby Ross comes along, and there
is your National Championship. And, there
IS the point. In the modern era, a coach,
a player, a college football power team
can come out of nowhere.

Win or lose, I want the non-conference games
on the schedule to be with old schools,
mostly big schools: Navy, Air Force,
Auburn (not because they are SEC but
because they are just down the road),
Tulane, Notre Dame (such a traditional
power, and yet they still have down years
and bounce back), even a lower tier
BIG 10 Indiana and/or NorthWestern.

Ya don’t have to WIN ever time,
Ya have show a winning effort almost
every time. Seems this season it is high
level then low level opponents and high level
then low level effort

@ole yeller: Nice contrast on how optimistic we were in August and how things have really turned out. CPJ will be here until at least 2016 (his contract runs thru that season) because we can’t afford his payout. Of course, there is always the possibility of him resigning/leaving.

I know PJ does not believe in recruiting rankings, but curiously enough all the teams that have been recruiting top 15 classes year after year are very successful.
We also need to hire a really good defensive coordinator that is also a great recruiter.
PJ needs to add some more of his passing plays to take advantage of Vad Lee’s skill set. It was not Vad’s fault that PJ was calling for the B back handoff repeatedly on first down. BYU picked up on that pretty quick!p

Tevin Washington should have never seen the football the second half. The fact that CPJ stuck with him for two more disastrous series was absolutely dumb. The defense was bad, but got no help from the offense or special teams.. Who could blame them for running out of gas.

This season is done. CPJ will get one more year to right the ship, but at this point, I can’t se how he can do it. If he couldn’t recruit better talent after somewhat successful years in 2008 and 2009, do we really expect he wil improve after this debacle of a season? I don’t think so!

Time to start thinking of young up and comers that wil be willing to take on a major rebuilding challenge the end of next season. No established coach would even consider the job at this point.

We need to fix the program, yes but we also need to fix the institution. One reason, silly one but most important is that we are not a party school. I have a great pride in that our institution take academics very seriously but it is turning away the recruits. We may work hard but we don’t party hard enough. We all know what our guy/girl ratio is and I think this attributes us being a boring school. So, my suggestion is to add a Fashion design school a la Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. We have Textile engineering so it should complement it as Architecture compliments Civil engineering and Industrial design does the others.

“One of few GT fans left” I’ve seen you make the same argument before, and it’s garbage. GT was an international university before Bud came. There’s no reason for GT to cater more exclusively to in-state students. Immigrants and out-of-state students help the state’s economy, and they pay more in tuition. They don’t rely on the government to pay for their HOPE scholarships, and they pay taxes.

Don’t dumb down the school, and don’t submit to xenophobia. Some things are more important than a GD football team. Besides, we can improve the program without tarnishing the institute.

Who the QB is does not matter. The problem with the GT offense today was that the GT offensive line blocked no one. BYU # 47 was not been blocked all afternoon.

Until the members of this OL graduate and a completely new line gets put on the field solid defensive teams will not be blocked.

And yeah, the defense is not very good. But except for a year here and a year there the GT defense never been very good.

I wish I did speak for all Tech fans then we could cut off the money and get back to helping these kids.
I’m not going to lie – it hurts me after 40 years of pulling for Tech – even with Reggie and Chan I stood with them, but I realize my mistake. It is about these kids – the players – the yellow endzone crew.
We need to give them a chance – they did not allow this to happen- it happened on our watch. As a season ticket holder since 1987 (no longer) I bear the brunt of that responsibility. Now I’m sticking to my guns – no games, no Tech merchandise – no money to Tech until Paul leaves- I really do hate that this is my only option (no pun intended). Guys I LOVE TECH. I just know that we have to do something – hire a innovative coach – we have to try!!

For the past 50 yrs Tech has hired the cheap, clearance sale, bargain basement coaches. None of their resumes would have raised an eyebrow. The only one who would have a recognizable name might have been Rogers. Man, I should have been AD at Tech. They get away with murder and answer to no one.

Tech Fan For Life – How is boycotting the program supposed to help anything? Do you think the GTAA doesn’t understand that results matter? How are they supposed to improve things if they’re taking a huge hit in the wallet? The best programs in the country are the ones with the most revenue flowering through their athletic departments. Trying to bankrupt GT’s with an organized boycott campaign shows absolutely no school spirit and would actually drive the program further into mediocrity.

Have you not seen the trend in the MLB and at other schools? If you want to improve a sports franchise/program YOU HAVE TO OPEN YOUR POCKETBOOK.

BYU had a very good defense! They stacked the outside and everyone stayed home and played their positions well! Tevin was having trouble with his reads and had a very bad day passing. Our defense was exhausted as they were on the field 70% of the game and BYU had a short field 6 times in the game. We played a very good veteran team and our sophomores and freshmen played hard but they beat us! This grad believes our team will rebound well next week at Maryland. Go Jackets!

Another embarassing loss at home. This team is a mess from top to bottom. This team will probably go 3-9 or 4-8 at best while our rivals to the northeast enjoy another banner year. Tech has very few athletes that can play at the major college football level thanks to the poor recruiting by CPJ. If CPJ is back next year, I don’t know how Tech will be able to sell any season tickets. As a season ticket holder it is hard justifying paying for what we witness every Saturday. The die is now cast for GT. Apparently, PJ cannot recruit the athletes necessary to compete in Division 1. At least, from all appearances, he has failed to do so. But then, who would want their kid to come play in that restrictive offensive system? Also, it appears to me that the players they have now are not really motivated to play. Maybe, they just do not like Johnson.. Anyway, IMO, GT needs a new HC sooner rather than later. Would O’leary come back? What about Friedgen as OC again? Just a thought.

@Tech4Life: Hurl stones all you want. Georgia just beat the #3 team in the nation. Tech just got blasted out of their shoes by a team with a .500 record coming into today’s game. Any way you slice it, it’s a big fat “W” for the Dawgs–and another huge “L” for the Jackets.

And CPJ is not going anywhere until his contract runs out in 2016–because Tech cannot afford to buy him out. So you have at least four more seasons of watching the ship sink–and five more losses to Georgia, which will leave Tech with an abysmal 1-16 record against their archrivals over 17 seasons. That’s just wonderful–for us.

Had a feeling this was going to be a tough game for Tech. BYU is no stranger to defending Triple Option with all those years in the Mountain West playing Air Force. Tech’s D is really, really bad though. Thought the home field advantage and lengthy travel for BYU would be a difference maker, but clearly Tech has serious issues.

Tech needs to bring in a defensive coordinator that can also recruit really well. I still think PJ can turn things around, but he needs to develop a passing game and improve recruiting, especially on defense.

I have been going to Tech games and a dedicated fan for 60 years and I have never been more disappointed in a Head Coach. Under PJ, we have gotten worse each year. This is a sign of a lack of leadership and motivation. PJ only won with Chan’s recruits, since then, we have gotten weaker each year. The only good news in this season is we will not have to suffer thru another miserable Bowl performance. It is time for PJ to go, he is not capable of taking Tech to higher levels. His lack of motivation and leadership is pathetic – If D Rad does not see this, then it just might be time to clean house from the AD on down. We might be lucky to win another game this year, but even more than winning, I would just like to see us show up with effort and emotion at least once. Unless a coaching change is made, I have bought my last tickets to watch a PJ team stumble thru another season. And while I am venting, why can’t we go back to wearing our traditional uniforms. I grew up in Gainesville and I have seen enough chicken wire for a lifetime. If we can’t play, let’s at least dress with class.

But TW gives us our best chance to win!! Our best chance is still losing by 30 points to a mediocre BYU team. Our best chance is losing by 30 to a Sunbelt Conference team. Our best chance is losing to Miami when leading by 16 going into the 4th… CPJ should be fired simply for his inability to identify players that give them the best chance to win.

…FSU and Duke are in the same division, so FSU did not defeat the “other” division leader – the really sad thing is that all the teams in Tech’s division (VPI, UNC, NC State, UM and UVA) are all really bad this year, and one of them could end up representing the ACC with a 7-6 record in the Orange Bowl, IF they beat either FSU, Clemson or Duke in the ACC Championship game – UGH…

I am so glad that CPJ only has 4 more games to coach. He will be going back to the smaller schools like Ga. Southern, Furman etc. He will not coach at a large school again. His offense proved it today. It is not capable of winning games. It was great the first year because nobody really has played against the triple option. As you can tell, it got worse and worse as time goes on, and all of these teams now know how to defend it. Mark my word, he will not be coaching at Ga. Tech next year. I told you Big Al was going and he is gone. What we will have to put up with is a rebuilding stage that will probably last for a few years. CPJ has set back Tech 10 years with his no brainer triple option. We also will be looking at a new Athletic Director at the end of the year, Mark my word again. This was the final straw, even if we beat Georgia (not going to happen), CPJ and Director will be gone.

To Old Yeller. What good is a good recruiting defense class when all you have to practice against is the triple option. Who in the ACC runs the triple option beside Tech. How can our defense get better when you can’t practice against a pro style offense like Clemson or other teams in the ACC. If you noticed since we have gone to the triple option our defense has gotten worse and worse over the years. We used to have a great defense that kept us in the ball games but our defense will get worse (How much worse is beyond me) I’m sorry fans but we accepted CPJ the first year but didn’t look ahead at the problems his offense would cause us. You could hire the best defensive coach in the nation and it would not help us. We must practice against the offensive’s that are being used in the ACC,SEC etc.

Face it we screwed up when Dodd left the SEC. Then we have been average with some silver lining years. You guys think firing Coach will magically make it ask better and make us top 15 recruiting. Not gonna happen. Best you can hope for is a scheme our coach like cutcliffe or Johnson. Still think he’s a good coach. Runs clean program and if he has a b back and qb he can beat most anybody. DRad should be terminated on Monday:

1) He got us on probation and he hired CPJ. He also negotiated CPJ’s current contract which has a $12mm buyout this year. BTW, where the heck was the Board of Trustees when this contract was signed? Didn’t they learn their lesson with the Paul Hewitt debacle with giving out big buyouts?

2) DRAd has treated Bruce Hepler like garbage, despite the fact that he has built one of the top three golf programs in the country.

3) DRad harassed Wes Durham and made him sweat out his contract renewal. He is arguably the best announcer in the country… Even Dawg fans agree on this.

3) Some uninformed person wrote earlier that Danny Hall should be fired. He has been to 3 CWS and won the ACC six times in his 19 years. DRad harassed him and stalled his contract renewal and we lost key recruits a few years ago.

4) He stuck with Paul Hewitt way too long.

5) Nobody in the AA likes DRad or CPJ.

6) DRad has run up $88mm in debt which has left us with limited options in terms of bringing in better coaches.

Fire DRad Monday, then maybe CPJ and his agent will get the hint and start looking for a new job.

I told my seat mate after his INT in the 3rd quarter after bouncing a pass to, I believe, Orwin, that if I were CPJ, that would be the last time he set foot on the field in a game unless injuries mandated it. The next offensive possession for GT, Vad Lee was the QB. I want & hope he retains the job of QB until he leaves Tech, unless someone beats him out in the future. I’ve been trying to find an explanation: (1) could it be some of the injuries {supposed to have backups ready to step in}. My conclusion is simple. This is not a good team.

Defensive fundamentals should dictate that you make concerted effort for basic tackle at first point of impact. Do not attempt slacking off with arm tackling. Do not attempt for super-play, stripping the ball away, until a stop is made. Do no assume you wil have backup assistance – not if teammates maintain their assignment.

GT needs more quality defensive players. They have some talet, just not enough.

BYU is a handful of plays away from being 9-0. They had Notre Dame on the ropes in South Bend a week ago and only lost because their QB missed a WIDE OPEN TD pass in the 4th quarter. That’s the same Notre Dame team that just beat Oklahoma in Norman by 17. The Cougs have a title-contender quality defense. GT was just outclassed today.

Note on today’s game. What is up with the punter being only 12 yards behind the ball (LOS)? How long nave we been watching punters lineup 15 yards from the LOS? Might that be the reason we have seen so may punts close to being blocked and did in fact have one blocked today that BYU recovered at our 9 yard line? Seems logical to me.

time for the Paul Johnson Fun and Run tour to come to an end – go back to Georgia Southern or maybe Valdosta State needs an ex-division 1 coach – the big boys have seen through the smoke and mirrors – your fan base is gone, your institution is non competitive in football. It’s just not smart to disrespect the opponent, especially a BYU team that lost 3 of 4 games on one bad play and 7 total points, 3 to ranked teams including Notre Dame in South Bend last week in the closing moments of the game. BYU has the 4th best defense in the country and when they execute, they can be formidable offensively. Let’s stop thinking they aren’t a good team, more snake bit at 5-4 than anything else.

On the side, my father passed away last year, but he was a Yellow Jacket through and through, a rocket scientist who founded the Delta Rocket Program and was Program Manager developing Skylab for Douglas. Dad was a huge Jacket fan till then end of his life. I am a proud BYU Cougar. I couldn’t lose today. I love Tech & BYU. Tech’s or rather PJ’s triple option has no longer been a mystery so it’s time to cut our ties with this one trick pony. Tech can still recruit good receivers so get a coach who can coach the traditional game. The kids will be happy to finally modernize their game and improve their chances of getting drafted.

Guys/gals….we have NO players. The scheme should be sound, the defense should be okay, but Johnson cannot/will not/shall not recruit. When he is fired after next year, our cupboard will be SOOOO bare that it will be a 3 year run before we can compete again. Face it, johson will be back after this season for finanical reasons, then shown the door after next years 6-6 campaign. We CN get the athletes with the right coach. For those naysayers see notre Dame and Stanford as paradigms as to how to recruit to a REAL academic institution. We can do it. O’Leary should still be here, if only Braine wda ponied up.

TechRon

one more point about PJ: When he gets fired from Tech (soon, I hope) who is going to be fool enough to hire him? Nobody. Even at the small college level they have modern offenses now. His option might work at the high school level with the right personnel, but not in college anymore. It only works against a slower, smaller opponent. That’s it, bottom line.

At least he has a whole lot of money that we paid him. If he is smart (and we all know he is a genius) he should never have to work again.

It pains me to say this, because I like Paul Johnson, but the end is near. The team has clearly tuned him out and we are spinning out of control. Tevin Washington should be kicked off the team for his sideline stunts, but I’m not sure that even that would send a message to this group of quitters.

Since we aren’t going to lure the right kind of coach to this situation right now (David Shaw would be the perfect coach for Tech), we need a plan B.

I agree with whoever said Ralph Friedgen. Give the guy a 3 year contract and tell him to go for broke, with the understanding that he’s to develop the next coach-in-waiting. Friedgen is not a friendly man, with regard to mediocrity. It was HIS butt-chewings and demanding personality that transformed Joe Hamilton from what Vad Lee is now to 2nd in the Heisman. He somehow managed to average 8 wins at Maryland, which is a minor miracle. Not to mention, the chance to get even with Maryland should be something of an incentive to work cheaply.

3) The UGA team that played South Carolina shows up that day.
4) GT plays out of their minds and recovers 5 or 6 turnovers.
5) Tech squeaks out a 30-27 victory, dropping UGA to 10-2.
6) UGA is denied any shot at a national title, thanks to losing to a horrible Tech team.
7) UGA enters the SEC title game totally deflated and is beaten 63-7……or I can’t decide…..They somehow pull off a miracle and beat Bama, but it doesn’t matter…..they can’t get into the title game and neither can any other SEC team.

Maybe we can learn something from all this – you can still be a very good team even without Top 20 recruiting classes. BYU, Boise State, Stanford, ect. all recruit to about GT’s level in terms of final rankings. Yet those teams seem to play fundamentally great football. They commit few penalties, they play very physically, they tackle and block well, and the players are accountable for their assignments. Overall they are very disciplined. Sure they may not compete for national championships, but at least they are competitive. Our football team should strive to be like that. But it all comes down to coaching and instilling this type of expectations into the players.

I’m appalled the CPJ when asked about the game and the loss hevjust didn’t say, “we were terribly out-coached” ! It just kills me that he accepts no responsibility publicly. Tech athletics, for the most part, are a train wreck. We know where systemic issues like this point…… It is time for the institution’s leader step up and be a leader. It should not be embarrassing to be a Tech fan and alum. But it is!! Time for a change

Having been born in Georgia, I think it’s a shame to see people on here that are Georgia fans run their mouths about other fans from Georgia. Do you have no respect for fellow Georgians? I look at people with Bulldog attire and tags/stickers on their cars, think about stuff that I read on here and it makes me feel sorry for them, pathetic and embarrassing.

One more vote for “Johnson must go”.

Might as well let him finish out this season, it’s already over. Plus it would be too big of a change this late in the season for the young players on the team. Just tough it out the rest of the season, end this failed experiment, and start over next year.

I dread the Georgia game.

Wake up DRad and listen to your customer base. The stands are emptying and so will your GTAA dollars. Unlike UGA, Tech fans won’t continue to support a program that doesn’t want to win. It is true we aren’t football drones and see life outside of stadiums, but if you want people to open their wallets you’d best make changes and make them soon. This season is a total loss which is sad for the players. If Paul Johnson can’t explain why they lost he should be shown the door today along with his staff. The team will be no worse for it. I love Tech and try to support the teams whenever I can but even I have limits. You’re producing an inferior product and unlike UGA, Tech fans won’t blindly follow. If you think we’re kidding just watch ticket sales over the next nine months. Our coaches gave up long ago. You’re no better than PJ if you do nothing to change it. If you can’t bring yourself to do what needs to be done then you should be shown the door as well. Money talks and yours is walking out the door.

i honestly wasnt one to embrace the hire of cpj to meet the objectives he was hired for; to beat uga and take the program to 9 win years. i did feet in the acc he could keep the bees on par with the last regime or at least hold his own, without slippage. i didnt expect this for sure. was kind of, ho hum guys, see where this gets us and be careful what you ask for.

right now, it is not about beating uga. it is about beating anyone with substance and not losing to clearly inferior teams. anyone see the score of mtsu game against msu? then check out msu against the tide? folks, we might not be a whole lot better than ga state before this is over.

sorry, no one should come on this blog and embarrass it any more saying anything derogatory about the dogs in any way. folks we got enough probs of our own to not worry about anyone else for a while, a long f*cking while.

I have not called for Tevin to be pulled yet. He has done well enough all season to keep his job UNTIL yesterday. I have to say it has to be VAD’s team now.

There is TALENT at TECH. When the New Class signs I have NO FEAR we will be BETTER.
I will not throw the players under the bus.
Have they played their best? Maybe but I doubt it.
Is it coaching?
Some YES and much NO. The LACK of tackling/wrapping up has hurt us on many plays.
At time the coaching didn’t have us in place to make a play but other time we were in position to make a play but filed to TACKLE and that is on the players.
This SEASON could be just what the players need. They are having to fight through PAIN and come together and fin a NEW LEVEL of dedication .
I do think it is VAD TIME.

The PUNTING FORMATION SUCKS.
They blocked 1 punt and a shot at blocking 2 more.

I am on the “Can we please run more than 5 plays” train though. We are such limited options (ironic) that other teams can pretty much stop us on any given 2 out of 3 downs.

Tough Loss for Jacket Fans! Almost as ugly as our victory yesterday against the #2 Florida Gators.
I usually come to Coach Johnson’s defense after some of these losses, but after yesterday’s drubbing by BYU, I think some of this years problems fall squarely on Paul Johnson’s shoulders.
I think CPJ needs to “up his game” in the recruiting department during the off-season. Watching the game yesterday with my best friend (a Jacket fan), I realized that Tech is sorely lacking talent and that falls on CPJ. His offense works, but he needs the right players to run it.
(BTW: I am happy UGA won, but not proud of our players’ lack of discipline. That falls on CMR)

I grow weary. Wish I could just move on with life and not care about GT football, but in my heart I’m still a fan. With every week, comes more bad news and “what ifs”. I’m a realist and really never thought we could compete with the big boys on a regular basis, but did hope and dream of a team that came to play, gelled as a team, gave it 100% for 4 quarters and left each game saying “we gave it our all”.

I don’t see or feel that. I see a team with no heart or passion. I see a coach and staff that for whatever reason do not develop their players and inspire them to come together as a team. I see a head coach so set in his ways that he is killing this team. And I see a fan base that simply can’t suffer through many more games where, even when we’re ahead, always have this sinking feeling we are going to blow it. (And watch Johnson go conservative……and play not to lose.)

Wow, that was a downer. So guess what, I’ll continue supporting my Jackets. Still have the plate on my car and flags on game days. Still wear GT shirts in public. Still extremely proud of my son who graduated with a degree from GT and is reaching great heights.

GO JACKETS!!!!

I have now watched an entire recruiting class come through GT under Johnson. Now y’all think about this. In that class name me one significant victory out of conference that Johnson has produced. Don’t say Georgia. Wrong. Those guys were credited to Gailey.

Point being, this is going the same route that Hewitt took basketball. A bad route at that. DRad has to see the ineptness and don’t for one second think it doesn’t start with the head coach. That is everything. Johnson has lost his way and the players. They don’t believe in his high school offense any longer. No defense can withstand 3 and outs constantly by the offense. Our defense is bad but it is magnified by the putrid offense.

Bottom line: Johnson has to go. He has had more than enough time. It ain’t working. He simply can’t recruit and don’t feed me that crap about curriculum etc. look at freakin Notre Dame. Doormats for most of the last 5-7 years and they hire a new coach. Boom! Probably beat USC and they will play for the National Championship.

GT has only one game where they will be favored: Duke. They won’t be bowl eligible and if Duke beats them I will send DRAD an email demanding Johnson be let go after the season. Same email I sent when Hewitt was being discussed. These are dark days at Tech for sure. Nobody can say the future with Johnson at the helm looks any better.

A little perspective–
After last nights ND win over OU, it appears BYU is a pretty good football team losing in SBend 17-14 last week. I know, different game etc but the body of work including a close L to a for real ND team says that BYU has grown up since earlier in the season. They would give Clemson or FSU a tough game. Interested to see how they close out the year. BYU team and fans were a class act and hats off to them!!

GT “is what it is” and that is an average at best football team. We have some great kids that are overmatched physically at times with little margin for error. We are not recruiting enough talent on either side of the ball. That will be some better next year. Not sure its enough. New DC probably is a must along with a 4-3 alignment.

I will NEVER boo a college kid and was disappointed in Tech fans for disrespecting TW yesterday. Folks he wants to win as much as any of you and is doing his best with what God gave him! His OLine didnt exactly give him all day to throw! With that said, I agree it is time for VLee to see if he can use what God gave him and make a play.

I heard ND Coach Kelly “stuck with his young QB” after some early season mistakes. I think its time for us to do the same, get Vad some playing time and salvage what we can.

Go Jackets forever!

Can’t recruit talent. They don’t want to join a team that offers little chance of getting them to the NFL. PJ has a system and systems only last so long before the weaknesses are exposed. PJ has shown no ability to change. PJ has shown no ability to hire quality staff. PJ must go. The people or persons who hired this sytems coach need to be replaced too. Tech does not have to settle for less then their historic high standard. It is time to get people who want to and can achieve that standard.

I guess I have to ask, what exactly did people expect when Johnson took over? Did you think he just couldn’t get the players because he was at Navy? I knew this would happen one Gailey’s players got out of the system. Its getting worse by the year. Johnson flat cannot recruit the talent necessary to win like he did in 2008 and 2009. Those type of players want the next level, and Johnson’s offense has no relevance there.

I dont know how he’s ever going to prepare a defense either. Its not like he has any Taj Boyd’s or Aaron Murray’s on the team. They dont have any bruiser backs or speedy WRs. So then this D gets into the game, and everything is happening much faster and stronger and precise than they are used to.

I think its a stretch to say the least to pretend Vlad Lee is the answer. The backup QB is always the most popular player when a team struggles. Fact is, he’s usually a backup for a reason. Vlad doesnt have any real game experience in this offense. Remember when people were calling for Washington over Nesbitt in 2010? Putting Vlad in the game is essentially giving up on this season and getting him game experience for next year.

Tech fan for Life, you are right on. When I view that coverage of Tech-GA game in 1990, I think how far GT is from that type of team, and I just want scream! Everyone with any football sense knows the problem. Since Chan left, recruiting has been abysmal. Secondly, we have a coach who only wants to run some funky offense that even Division 1AA teams want run, there is no hope of ever getting any better. The offense is boring, and counts on big plays, which are rare these days against any reputible defenses. The defense without a traditional offense to hone their skills, are worse than abysmal. I beleive the players have quit on Johnson, and its time for Rad to move on, rather than waste another year enduring this crap. I too have been a season ticket holder for a number of years, but this is it for me. I have literally given away tickets to those who will take them, because I just can’t stand watching the abysmal play of this team, week end and week out. I don’t care what it costs to buy out this guy. If something isn’t done soon, Rad is going to lose a big part of the seasont ticket fan base, and how much will that cost. I just have no hope as long as Johnson is here. He will never abandon this offense as that is all he knows, and we never recruit the kind of athlete’s to make it back to what we had in 1990. As Furman Bisher used to say, Selah and Adios.

I just hope a sense of apathy & lassitude hasn’t taken root. We still need to support our team. I believe the boo birds out came yesterday for no other reason than to show how upset we were over Tevin’s latest panic plays. And the seeming lack of cohesive play on both sides of the ball. I don’t think the booing will continue if we can just see some evidence of trying to improve things. That is all. BTW, Furman never said adios.

It was the second game using a different DC. The special teams gave BYU great field position over and over again. I had a great time at the game, as I always do but it was just obvious that BYU had confidence in themselves. They knew where the ball was at and how to get to it. Yes, that is what good coaching looks like. I didn’t boo TW coming out but wanted to see Vad Lee in sooner, with CPJ alternating them throughout the game to keep the Cougars guessing. Thanks Old Gold. Finally someone with critical thinking skills.

For those of you who say my boycott of Tech until Johnson is gone is going to hurt the team etc.

Let me see if I can simplify it for you since we don’t have many critical thinkers like Old Gold.

1. I keep buying season tickets- which I had for 20+ years until this year, keep sending money to
the Tech athletic dept, and buying merchandise – then the higher
ups will keep Johnson and that will DESTROY our football program.

2. I give up season tickets- giving etc. If enough of us to do it then higher ups will be forced to do
make a change i.e. Fire Johnson. If we hire an innovative
coach (Yes there are several I can list them for you doubters)
then we can SAVE our program.

So here is the simple explanation (Continued Support= Johnson Stays= Destroyed Program)

(Stop Support = Johnson Fired= Program Maybe Saved)

I’m not trying to be snide with anyone, the offensive energy level visibly ramped up with the players yesterday when Lee came in. The BYU linebacker had two personal fouls called on him in that drive, one late hit on Lee and another call for when he almost yanked his helmet off. He was pumped and I think the other players see the difference in the speed and ability of Lee. He learns to learn the offense and that requires playing time. He may not be the answer but the players on offense may have seen what could be and what is and aren’t really that interested in TW trying to figure out what to do with the ball anymore. Lee will get the WRs and RBs the ball and they want the ball. That’s why they play, not to block for TW.

I think you tag this loss to your Coach. If he would have done his homework he would have known BYU has one of the best run defenses in the country.. BYU got manhandled by Oregon State in the 4th quarter because the secondary gave up too many long plays.
Your coach should have had your qb pass 8 out of 10 downs..

Pass pass pass to setup your great run attack.

“USMC Dawg, who do you think is going to be the starting quarterback next year, Tevin Washington? You are aware he’s a senior aren’t you?”–Clyde

That’s NOT how College Football is played. College football coaches play to win EVERY game. They don’t throw the remainder of the season, so some fair weather fans can see an UN-proven player take the reins.

The starting QB for Tech next year is the player who WINS the job during the OFF season. That’s who. Vad Lee might have a flashy name, but Paul Johnson has said on NUMEROUS occassions that Vad Lee has not proven himself in practice. Plus, every time vad Lee has come in to play, he misses obvious “reads” that Tevin is better at making.

I saw with my own eyes TW miss a wide open receiver running across the middle yesterday, wide open. His vision is just a tad slow for quick decision making and his arm isn’t strong enough when he does suddenly change his mind and throw to someone else. There are just different caliber quarterbacks with different strengths, he’s just not ’strong’.

Now that decision comes home to roost

Now, GT fans know he was right in that decision. Them chickens for GT’s lousy recruiting are coming home to roost.

October 28th, 2012

GT needs a coach with a wide open plan of attack. he would get QBs that can run and pass the ball. He would sign r backs, tight ends and o Lin en that CAN COMPETE in the hapless ACC on a man to man basis with most of the lousy ACC teams. He is in Georgia and next door to state of Florida and within three years could re build GT into decent but COMPETITIVE ACC team.

This said by a UGA alumnus. After all, UGA DOES want this supposed rivalry to be worthy of the traditions of long ago. We own UT, Florida and Will own Auburn and you guys, so that is not so bad to UGA grads. SC will be ancient history when Steve retires. So, the GT / UGA game needs to amp up !!

PJ needs to pack his stuff and get out of town. If he doesn’t have a QB that can get it done, it is his own fault. I would say the same for the AD, who has presided over a trainwreck in football and basketball. We are on our way to the Southern Conference at this rate, and I am not sure we can win there. A storied program, down in flames. Is anyone actually in charge down there?

This was as comprehensive a failure as I can recall. Our offense did nothing, the defense offered no resistance, and the special teams wrapped it all up in a nice bow.

I guess there’s nothing really more to add, except to say that every time someone says we’re irrelevant, I just look at the volume of comments by UGA fans and have confirmation that we are still very, very relevant.

This past Summer I was on here and said Tech needed a shovel pass. BYU used one against Tech twice for good gains. Georgia loves to use them. Tech runs to the side too much instead of downfield via shovel passes and shotguns/pistols/wildcats. The to is a side to side revolving door that will never cross the goal lines, only the sidelines where there’s a bench to warm and no pt to be had. The qbs have no time to find receivers in the to. Even when Tech ran the pistol this year, playing better teams neutralized any blocking behind the los for the qb by their overpowering any blocking backs. Tech just isn’t all that athletic this year apparently. Their record reflects that. BYU has appeal for the colder temps, scenic mountain campus and history of bigamy. If you want to go to a college and find a coed to marry and snuggle up by the real log fire then you might choose applying to BYU, or Boise. You if you’re at Tech might even want to transfer to BYU. If you can’t beat them, join them. Granted, it’s rather hot in Atlanta in the warm months, much hotter than when I was at Tech from ‘69-73. Fridgen said he did not want the Tech job, so count him out. O’leary did not want it. Ross did not want it. It is to hot in Atlanta in the Summer now. The popular schools are by the cold Pacific, such as Oregon, and the Mountain West where BYU and Boise are. People have had it with the heat. Remember last July? No coach wants to live in Atl in the Summer now. You only live once.

Whether CPJ is retained or not, DRAD needs to help him or the future coach get a recruiter that can bring in players. That would be good for the program regardless of who the coach is. Every successful sports program has a good salesman. Every successful company has a good sale department, otherwise you have something good that no one knows about.

We have seen what CPJ’s offense is capable of doing when he has good recruits. Maybe this offense is a negative when it comes to recruiting higher caliber players, if we can’t get past that, then it is time for a change. We cannot compete using FCS caliber players. Bobby Ross was able to compete, so it is not impossible, so I’m calling on our AD to make the changes that need to be done to help our coaches be successful. Even coaches can use some coaching from time to time as each of us can.

If a change is to be made, it would be nice to see someone like Ken Wisenhunt come back and coach his alma mater. Wonder if he has made enough $ to be willing to help out Tech. Probably won’t happen, but would not hurt to ask. Or what about Keith Brooking to come back in some defensive coaching capacity? Maybe I’m reaching a bit high on the chain, but someone needs to be reaching for something, because this is just not cutting it.

Wow! The natives are restless. I’m not a die-hard PJ fan but
I don’t yet think it’s time to burn him in effigy.

We all love to win-and talk about past Tech teams that gave us the
“warm and fuzzies.”

Maybe, we can revive one of our past great coaches to lead us to victory!

If we dug up John Heisman, would we want the one who went 9-0 in 1917?
After all, he’s the same coach that went 4-4 in 1907.

How about Bill Alexander? He led the team to a 10-0 season in 1928.
Of course, we’d want to ignore his 1-9 debacle in 1934.

Hell, we loved Bobby Dodd enough to name a stadium after him. He did
guide us to a 12-0 1952 season. We could sweep his 4-6 and 4-4-2 seasons
under the rug.

Then there’s Bobby Ross. We’d cheer for the 11-0-1 (1990) Bobby but the
2-9 (1987) Bobby would be sh!t out of luck.

I’m glad we didn’t have the internet during some of those coaches tenures.
They might have been fired before they had a chance to do us any good.

Don’t worry folks, I’m not blind. We suck this year. We suck badly!
The offense is streaky, at best, and our one-man-defense
(Jemea Thomas) is simply out-numbered by the opposition.

Paul Johnson has had some good seasons at Tech. He will have some bad
seasons too.

A top 15 recruiting class, remember 2007? You miss Giff Smith now don’t you? He and Jeff Collins were a good combination when it came to recruiting and making the players feel special. Many fans said they wanted the 07 class (Gailey’s) boys gone, said they were a “cancer” on the team. They came in and beat GA just like they said they would and no matter what the NCAA says they WON the ACC Championship like they said they would! They accomplished many of their goals as a unit, a team. Can we say that now? Fans are never happy. Maybe you should get out there and play. HMMMMMMMM. Be careful what you wish for!

I have grown up watching tech football and i have seen some great players on the likes of calvin johnson, bay bay, jon dwyer, and many come through. Tech has zero playmakers on the team, Paul johnson cant recruit all tech can get is 3 star players and if we are lucky get a few 4 star players. Has CPJ even recruited a 5 star player since he has been at tech? No. The Option was cute for the first couple years when nobody knew how to stop it. Well now it doesnt work at all. And on the defensive side of the ball, our d line is a joke and cant pass rush to save their lifes and our defense cant tackle at all. You never see Tech come out and play good and play with intensity against good teams. And CPJ needs to preach home-field advantage to his team, you should never at any circumstance get blown out at home. Thats just down right embarrassing, hopefully Vad Lee can bring some energy and make his teammates play a little better and play with a little bit more passion. If tech doesnt get better atleast a little bit, Georgia is going to have fun with them in Athens this year and it wont even be a game to watch. Pick it up Tech!

Tech is losing to all the teams that wear blue this year. If that holds true, they will lose to NC and Duke. We already know they’ll lose to Georgia. Since they have no defense, offense and kicking game, I don’t see how they could beat Maryland. They even lost to McNeice State since Mcneice beat MT tis year. The pink GTs on the field during BC game looked like the old powder puff fooball league where the female teams might have worn pink unis. A pink end zone background with the Tech name in Tech colors and pink ribbons at the 40 yard lines would have been better, and perhaps pink crepe paper festooning the goal popsts with it streaming in the wind, but just keep pink away from being associated with a school that used to be all male and still is mostly male.

This game was like Tech in all white, like Auburn wears sometimes, playing Auburn in their blue jersey unis, and I really liked it. It was about time for Tech to abdicate to Cam Newton and Ted Roof’s national championship Heisman team that beat Oregon b/c Tech would have lost to Auburn that year, and wasn’t even scheduled in the same bowl b/c it would not have been competitive.

I think a lot of Tech fans were surprised by BYU. That team is actually not bad. They have lost a number of close games to UTAH and NDame and could have easily with a couple of breaks been a one loss team coming in to Tech.

Tech has to develop a passing game. Otherwise teams will continue to load the box.
