Johnson: ‘We’ll see’ on starting QB for Maryland

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson was non-committal whether Tevin Washington would remain as starting quarterback after Tech’s offense approached or reached new lows for ineffectiveness in a 41-17 loss to BYU on Saturday at Bobby Dodd Stadium.

Tech’s offense was limited to 157 yards and scored its only points on a drive after Washington was pulled amid a cascade of boos. The Yellow Jackets were 0-of-10 on third downs and outrushed by almost 70 yards. Washington finished 1-of-5 passing with an interception and rushed for 10 yards on five carries.

“We’ll see; we’ll look into it and see where we are at,” Johnson said of changing quarterbacks. Washington’s backup is Vad Lee, who led the Jackets to a field goal, the only points scored by the offense. Even that drive was aided by penalties against the Cougars.

The Jackets, who had averaged 37.7 points and almost 500 yards per game, could do little right. The Cougars’ defensive line dominated the Jackets’ offensive line, which played without injured tackle Will Jackson.

As a result, the Jackets were held without a rushing touchdown for the first time since losing to Miami in 2010. It was the first time since the loss to LSU in the 2008 Chick-fil-A Bowl that Tech didn’t score a touchdown on offense.

“They were filling the holes and were very aggressive,” A-back Orwin Smith said of the Cougars. “When Tevin would get the ball, they were there. When we would get to the outside, they were there.”

Johnson said the offense could never get into a rhythm in the first half. When they did, someone would miss a read or commit a penalty to stop any momentum. Because of the issues converting third downs, Tech had only nine drives and ran only 47 plays, 13 fewer than their previous low this season.

“Just self-inflicted would be the title of this game,” center Jay Finch said.

The Cougars came to town with one of the nation’s better defenses, limiting opponents to 276.9 yards and 14 points per game.

Johnson pulled Washington after his poor throw was intercepted and eventually turned into a touchdown. The score gave the Cougars a 31-14 lead with 3:43 left in the third quarter. The Yellow Jackets were 0-for-7 on third downs to that point and had less than 100 yards in offense.

As the offense’s struggles deepened, Lee said he began trying to score on every play, not every drive.

“We knew that coming in, that what they didn’t do was they didn’t give up any cheap plays,” Johnson said. “They make you earn it, and we weren’t good enough to earn it.”

And nothing has changed on defense. The players mostly look like their feet are stuck in wet cement, playing “read & react” football. Orwin talked about BYU players being very aggressive… while our LB Nealy gives the RB a 10 yard cusion & he takes a shovel pass 40 yards for TD. This team looks poorly coached and our gameplans are very predictable.

Wow, 2.3 million dollars doesn’t buy what it used to. This is the worst team I have seen since the 1-11 Bill Lewis led bunch. I really thought Johnson was better than this, but his team is making him look bad. Real bad.

Johnson keeps talking about poor reads. Does he have a QB that can “read”? Perhaps he could make that read requirment less a requirment.

re demeanor…do you think the parents of the players just cringe when their kid makes any mistake?
Johnson makes sure mistakes are called out quickly…and in public.

1. Run option/dive,
2. Run option/dive,
3. Line up under center and have a Div 3. caliber QB try to drop back, read the Defense & throw a duck – preferably not to a wide out.

Wash, rinse, repeat….

- TechApp,

Yeah, my sympathies got out to the parents of those Tech players. I have no problem with a kid getting an earful, but he is *ALWAYS* acting like that on the sideline and I think the players have opted-out. If he wants to dish it out, then he also needs to whoop it up when they do well – which he never does.

If the OL cannot block the defense no offense on the planet will work. Until they change the rules football is still a game of blocking and tackling. GT does not do either one very well.

The OL loses Uzzi to graduation. Everyone else is back. Everyone else who could not block BYU. There is some new blood available: O’Reilly will be eligible for one. Everyone will be biger and stronger. Will that help? Dunno.

Defense today…..there were some good plays made. Barnes had what I am calling his best game to date. He had his name called twice over PA early in the game. He had 2 blockers most every play. He actually collapsed the pocket twice today=his 1st & 2nd times. The defense….in spite of a few good plays, they could not get a stop when it was needed. The defense….basically stunk. For the 4th time in 5 games, they gave up more that 40 points. They seemed to play a bit better last week. They are much like the drunk cowboy…1 step forward…2 steps back. Overall, no aggression, no focus, no fire, no determination, no leadership, no motivation, no whatever. But, painful as it is, GT is still my horse if they never win another race. I can’t just quit & walk away like so many of you apparently can. NOPE!! Can’t do it!!

I think anyone that continues to defend CPJ and TW needs a brain check. TW might be more experienced but that doesn’t translate at all on the football field.

He is always a second to slow with his reads, most of his pitches to the outside the A back has to literally dive for the ball, he can’t throw, he gets caught from behind by 300lb D linemen, he has no awareness within a pocket and continually gets sacked from his blind spot. Props to the kid but he isn’t cut out to play in this level of competition.

Lee honestly can’t that far behind in reading and executing the TO. Even if he is, his pure athletic prowess will surpass TW’s experience and knowledge of running the TO by miles by itself. O and he can actually throw!

I don’t think I need to start on CPJ, anyone that thinks its a good idea to never pass against a team that is ranked in the top 10 in stopping the run… do I even need to finish?

____________

O’reilly couldn’t sniff the depth chart for an Aubie team that is 1-7 this season and has imploded, do you really think he’s going to provide some relief next season?

We lose Uzzi, our best OL, we lose Orwin Smith our best A-back , we lose Cross, our best DL, and we lose a guy in the 2ndary that has made 30+ Career Starts (Sweeting), and the way that CPJ has Recruited, I’m not sure the young back-ups moving into playing roles next yr. will be better.

Also, whether or not you like TW, he has gotten better each yr. and does have a lot of game experience, so it is not a done deal that our QBs will be better.

Basically we’re looking at a 6-6 or 5-7 team next season even if Vad Lee is better than TW by a small amount, there is no guarantee that he is better than TW by a “large margin” that would guarantee that GT is a 9-3 type of team.

Due to CPJ’s crappy Recruiting we are a very flawed FB Program in many areas.

The REAL question should be, ‘who is going to be the head coach against the Terps’. Many have said it for 4 years, but PJ isn’t a good HC. Granted, he has an offense that can, if applied about 2/3 of the time can gain yards and score points, but if ANYTHING goes wrong, his offense is in BIG trouble. Given he’s dealing with 19-22yr-olds, that doesn’t happen often enough. If we get behind, it’s over.
He can’t recruit top talent, he can’t recruit ANY talent in the special teams area and his idea of defnse is to run his offense.
In short, Techs’ little experiment in a weirdo offense/coach should come to an end..analogous to America’s little experiment with socialism which had better come to an end in 2 weeks. There are parallels here, but I’m not expecting Radical-vich to oust the guy. In fact, ‘D-Rad’ is part of the problem…football, basketball, baseball (even golf) have declined with him as AD.

Everything Tech 14 said is right on target. As bad as I feel saying it, Tech’s players are just not 1. motivated nor man enough or mean enough nor good enough to beat a quality team. And make no mistake BYU is a top level team with losses that could all have been wins. They are as good as any team that Tech will play this year including the UGLY DAWGS. If Florida had a QB with any ability and nerve they would have won yesterday-his showing was even more pitiful than the Jackets two QB’s. Tevin plays as hard and as capably as he can, but just not enough–much too slow and no quickness. From what I have seen from Vad lee-I am not getting my hopes up that he is any better. The future looks bleak. We just don’t have the players and that is all you can say about it. While I am pulling for Tech all the way, I just don’t see them winning anymore games this year-maybe Duke and the terps. I have been on the Tech bandwagon for many years but they are fast becoming not so consequential in my life.

Bottom line we got out butts kicked in every phase of the game by a team that is 5-4–our defense leaves a lot to be desired they are poor tacklers and are not very physical—and either a kids is or he isnt in that department—we missed a lot of blocks yesterday that is effort— we need better players not doubt and I have not heard squat on recruiting in a while—the qb issue —there are bigger issues involved than just replecing a qb this is not the pros this is college where a coach is trying to build/maintain a program—I am as disappointed as everyone else with CPJ—is it time for a change–no I dont think so—but the seat is a lot hotter and CPJ is not stupid he understands that—DRAD–is doing great things at Tech–we are improving our facilities so we can recruit better in all sports.

And frankly as far as continuiing the bowl streak, it would not bother me if they don’t go. I have been to every bowl game tech has been to in this current streak and frankly am sick and tired of seeing the lot of them either thinking they were/are too good to be playing in Shreveport or Boise , or would you believe San francisco-one of the most beautiful cities in the world-getting our asses handed to us by the likes of the AF Academy, Utah-twice, Fresno State twice etc. let these prima donnas sit home and watch teams who give it their all such as the AF Academy did in Shreveport a couple of years ago.

I always stay in the hotel that the team does and am amazed at the lack of camraderie on the teams. Getting on elevators, or in the lobbies, you never see any of them speaking or having a good time with t the other players. All walking around with ear pieces on or with family. They just don’t seem to be ready for the game to me.They all seem to be in some type funk or mysery. the dissension is palatable, believe me. Now it may well be that the coaches have lost these players, but that is no damn excuse for me. I put the onus on their pathetic efforts. they are laying down-maybe to influence the fans to keep harping about how bad a coach CPJ is. I believe he is a good coach but has a bunch of whiners and losers who actually believe they are better than they are. There cannot possibly be the level of difference in ability as we saw yesterday. Sad time for everybody.

I am very disappointed in the season like all Tech fans and it does seem if some of the shine is off Coach Johnson after a very fast start here at GT, but I do think he deserves another year to right the ship and recruit some players. He has proved with talented players, his system can work and produce enough wins to to hang around here and win in Athens, but with the current players we have – he can’t and he has nobody to blame but himself for his recruiting. Hopefully, we will not throw in the towel and at least compete the rest of the year and regroup for next season. But if we have another year like this one in 2013, then I think we will be in the market for a new coach. I think back to all the problems UGa had when Dooley left going through Goff and Donnan in pretty short order and then Mark Richt came in and they have been fine for years now. We need the same quality of coach here and we will be fine as well. Coach Johnson may be that guy if he can get this turned around, but the fans won’t wait forever and the Athletic Director and Coach know that. Good luck the rest of the year and Go Jackets!

I will remain the loyal GT fan that I’ve been since 1960 just as I did during the awful 1980 and 1994 seasons. WnE’s analysis @4:28 is accurate for the immediate future. The problem with this team right now is “every little thing.” At the moment, there is no aspect of the game that could be called a “team strength.” BYU exposed the fact that our rushing offense is not as good as the statistics had indicated. BYU is a solid, good, well-coached team. No disgrace losing to them. It is disheartening to be whipped as soundly as the Jackets were.

While I agree with TVFan that “Tech has more problems than just quarterback,” it is obvious that GEORGIA TECH WILL NEVER BEAT A GOOD TEAM with Tevin Washington at QB. The team knows this as well. It’s difficult for a coach to “give up” on a great kid who has worked hard and mastered his job to the best of his ability. But, it’s time to start and play Vad Lee and find out if he has what it takes to be the next Joe Hamilton. Every down TW plays is a “wasted down” as far as the future of the program is concerned.

Literally one of the worst games I have ever seen. We were BAD in every facet of the game. We simply don’t have Div 1 players. Both the O and D line are terrible. There is simply nothing good to say about the state of GT football. NOTHING!

It is life the difference between the Jackets’ players and these teams’ players is the same as the difference between the Jackets’ players and PC’s players. I’ve been a season ticket holder for about 30 years, and after yesterday’s game, and this season is the first time I am considering not renewing my season tickets. All the comments about the team above are true.( I dropped my BBall season tickets 2 years ago when NO CHANGE was to be found in Hewitt and his results- Ground hog days!) In addition:

1. At a home game, have you ever tried to get an important score on either the main scoreboard or those on the west stands? North Texas State against Abilene? WHO CARES! Only once did I see a score on the Ga Fla game! Other ACC scores…nilch. Nationally ranked teams…do they exist?

2. When the scores , the ones that do not matter, are posted, they are posted one at a time for what seems eternity. This is GT. We learned to read many years ago. Roll the scores up there and repeat them over time. DUH!

3. The constant commercials…loud commercials during every time out ? I know you need to raise revenue but, if I want to see commercials, I can stay at home and watch the games on TV!!!! Oh and that Chevron commercial is really sad! Winning the hungriest fan contest…and you get a small pizza and a $20 gift card for “cardboard”. Get real!

4. Concession prices.Concession selection Enough said. Let people bring food to the game.

5. Bathrooms? Have not been remodeled for at least 30 years. So attractive. I mean they don’t have to be designer, but they are an embarrassment.

6. The loudness of the PA system. Are we trying to let North Georgia hear the game on the PA system?

Some will say my comments are off base and that the peripherals do not matter. But are we going to improve the game day experience? Including the team and coaching???

Besides learning to tackle low and hard, the punting coach might want to consider moving the punter at least 12-15 yards off the line of scrimmage in punting situations – those additional 2-3 yards make such a difference in the ball being punted rather than blocked. The Jackets ought to try that sometime.

At time the coaching didn’t have us in place to make a play but other time we were in position to make a play but filed to TACKLE and that is on the players.
This SEASON could be just what the players need. They are having to fight through PAIN and come together and fin a NEW LEVEL of dedication .
I do think it is VAD TIME.

The BYU game will save a lot of time reviewing tapes. Very little to learn from so many mistakes after eight games.
Special teams play has all but dried up since the ST coach moved over to help with defense. Put him back. Hard to believe there isn’t one kid in the intramural league who can’t be recruited to consistently kick a 25 yard field goal.
I know the saying is you don’t “rebuild” in college because you owe the seniors. But the seniors are letting the team down. Time to let the underclassmen prepare for next year.
And perhaps it is time for CPJ to build an offense around the talent he has, rather than try and make good players learn this offense. Love it at Navy and Air Force, but maybe, just maybe, their players are not only talented, but smart enough to make it work well.

“We’ll see.” – pj is so lost in the woods he doesn’t even know who will start.

Or he doesn’t want to tip off the opponent re: strategy. Funny.

D-rad, the head of the athletic department violated NCAA instructions to the tune of Scholarships and ACC title. No repercussions. Just arrogance. What other head of an organization can thumb his nose at regulators, damage the organization he is responsible for and keep his large salary with benefits? Enjoy Bureaucrat! On us. The Georgia taxpayer and GT alum whom you are embarrassing.

This coupled withe the fact the athletes do not relate, understand, and/or respect he coaches and Athletic Department head might be why they have quit. Doesn’t take a Psychology Degree to figure this out.

In the mean time just – wondering if pj punched someone, hung himself, or degraded a challenged person after the game? All these things motivate players and build respect, not.

The problem here is not as much lack of talent as it is either physical fitness and/or mental disconnect. This is almost the same bunch that started 6-0 last season. They have enough talent to compete… at least better than they did yesterday. I dont think they are entirely healthy. I’ll just leave it at that…

The fans may have officially succeeded at breaking TW’s spirit. He may be done. I can only imagine being literally boo’d at your own homecoming game. Losing or not thats sacrilege. We’re talking about a young man who has sacrificed his body in good effort all year for the good of the team…
Be assured this mentally tanked everyone on the team maybe except Lee.

I say its time for Vad. Thats right – Im flipping positions! GT fans deserve it and its about time for Vad to be on the end of some of these losses. He may as well be introduced to life of a GT player.

Saw the comments about punts & punter lining up 12-15 yds back. For years now, at the college & pro level, it has been the norm (standard practice for the Athenians) for the punter to line up 15 yards from the LOS (ball). Yesterday, I guess I was watching with a more critical eye, I noticed we had 2 or 3 punts nearly blocked. Then BYU did block one & recovered the ball at our 9 yard line=TD in 1 or 2 plays. Next time we lined up for a punt, we had the ball at our 42 yard line (pretty sure about that) and I paid attention to where the punter lined up….12 yards back from the ball. What the HELL is up with that? COACHING?? Then the punt only went 28 yards! Punter was too worried about another block & rushed himself maybe? Has our new ST coach installed the change of being 3 yards closer to the guys trying to block the punt? Is this by design? The kid is a True Freshman, Ryan Rodwell….did he make a mistake & line up 12 yards back like he did in high school? IDK (I don’t know for the leg humpers). Whether by design or mistake, it’s COACHING!! And it isn’t working!!

UGA fans always want to fire their football coach after every tough loss. GT fans should be better than that. Coach Paul Johnson has been successful as GT football coach until this season. We should stand behind our coach and our football program during these tough times and give them a chance to straighten things out. Firing Al Groh was a step in the right direction. It will take some time to fix the damage he did to our program. The future is bright. Vad Lee will start every game next season, and he will be the next Josh Nesbitt with regards to running the option but with better passing ability which will be a killer combination. We have been through tough times before and GT always figures it out. Remember, Bobby Ross had some tough seasons before he won national championship.

QB is NOT the only glaring issue……..that said, I do think it is time to move on to Vad Lee. We need to get him more experience for next season and he probably gives us the best chance to win the remaining games this season. We also need to determine whether he is the “no-brainer” QB for next season or if we need to consider the speedy QB from Alabama (Justin Thomas I think????? his name escapes me right now).

Concerning the disparities Tech endures, Johnson will be successful & we are fortunate to have him! Talent is not the problem either, look at Texas, Auburn & Arkansas & the star basis they have recruited. But I still like the fact that GT as a school (Institute) tries to (& in a large degree succeeds) do things in a manner that enhances the students life (athlete or not) after graduation or just moving on. Tech is hard for her students for a reason. Life is hard. No one gives you anything. You must earn your way in life. Yeah sure, some get away with taking shortcuts, but not many. As it stands now, a degree from Tech for a new grad is the best value for the $$ spent per student to earn said degree. A recent survey ranked schools based on that metric & Tech was #1 & Georgie was #4 (got to give them props for that). But, the new Tech grad compared to a new Georgie grad had a median starting salary $18,000 higher. I’m sorry, but I don’t recall where I saw that survey. I’ve slept since then. So again, why do you want to devalue your Tech degree? And everyone that has one to boot.

Been a Tech fan all of my life and will continue to do so. I have seen good teams, mid to good and plain our sorry teams over the years. However, I am very disappointed in this years team. After the 6 and 0 start last year, a majical season could have happened, but no, they found a way to louse it up. Mostly the defense. When you can’t tackle and defend a pass you are in trouble. Thought this year would be better. But no, for the most part the defense has loused this season up also. Don’t know how to tackle, don’t know how to defend a pass. Look at all good defensive teams and they jam the line on the receiver, not Tech, we give them an 8 to 10 yard cushion, and still don’t know where the ball is until it is caught. The special teams literally suck. Now comes yesterday, and this offense can’t convert one third down play all day. This team is now demoralize, down on themselves, and in my opinion, has quite for the rest of the season. They will be going through the motions. You can’t say we don’t have the players that GA has, no we don’t. But you don’t give out scholarships unless these guys can play. And Tech has some very good athletes. Perhaps with a new defensive coach coming in next year, things will improve in that area. I love the TO, but until you start throwing the ball a lot more than Tech does, your running game is going to get stopped. If CPJ would stop being so bullheaded, as smart as he is, he should see that. As for the remaining 4 games left on schedule, we might win 1 and that being Maryland next week. At this point in time, Tech will not even be favored to beat Duke and I know we will be underdog against NC and the Dogs.

Some of the arguments on these boards are laughable. I’ve read numerous times on here that CPJ isn’t a good head coach… You ever check his record at Georgia Southern? Navy?

Lets talk recruiting. Read on here hundreds of times that he can’t recruit. Well, let’s just look at that, shall we? Here are Georgia Tech’s year-by-year recruiting since 2002 from Rivals.com:

2002: 63
2003: 50
2004: 79
2005: 62
2006: 57
2007: 18
2008: 49
2009: 49
2010: 43
2011: 41
2012: 56

It looks like recruiting has actually improved in the CPJ era.

For such an educated fan base, you guys are failing hard when it comes to logical arguments.

How about the argument that the triple option doesn’t work? Top five in rushing yards every year he’s been here isn’t working? He’s apparently taken a team with a QB that can’t throw, and is too slow, and still averaging over 450 yards a game this year. The offense works, with or without passing. Oh, and by the way, he has implemented pistol formations into it as well.

Also, he is stockpiling talent. Look at Boise State. Do they recruit the top talent? Answer: no. They redshirt almost every incoming freshman, and slow the turnover rate and gain an extra year with everybody though. This is the same as what CPJ has been doing. And, if you look at the recruiting rankings, he does recruit talented enough players, so this should work well as it continues. By doing this, to get a real judge of an entire CPJ recruited team, the next two years should be what we judge him on.

There are downsides to CPJ obviously. One is his demeanor on the sidelines. The way he yells at players may result in some of them tuning him out. At Georgia Southern, he probably had better players than most teams, and with all the winning, the yelling didn’t seem as bad. At Navy, they’re used to being yelled at by superiors. It’s part of the training. At a big-conference school, where you are woo-ing the players to come play for you-star high school athletes-then berate them weekly on tv, it might not be as well-received. Whether that’s all on him or also on the players as well, is up for debate.

The lack of defense during his tenure is concerning. Yes, it could be said that because of the offense they run, the defense doesn’t see much time in practice against conventional style offenses. However, considering the scout team mimicks that week’s team, this isn’t the biggest problem.

The choices in defensive coordinators is concerning as well, and perhaps his choices for assistants overall. The special teams coach hire is puzzling. To go get someone who was coaching in Canada, when there are plenty of qualified assistants that have ties to this area was a poor choice. Not so much because I don’t think the ST coordinator can’t coach (the ST unit hasn’t been very good though), but he has zero ties to the area for recruiting. That can’t help.

Basically, CPJ has warts, like all coaches not name Saban. He is an offensive mastermind, yesterday not included. Again though, even the best look bad occasionally. His offense does and has worked, with both his players and Gailey’s players. He definitely has the ability to outsmart the opposing coach more often than not. On the other hand, he can’t get a quality defense here (remember when George O’Leary had the same problem?), he is an abrasive person at times, maybe causing players to tune him out or quit, and he has gotten a little too conservative the last few years, as opposed to his first few here. All in all, he should be given more time to sort through the struggles. The talent is there, the offensive scheme is there, lets see what happens with a new defensive coordinator.

It really makes some of you “fans” seem less than educated with the arguments you put forth as to why CPJ should go. Being such a strong educational institution, to argue the pro’s and con’s of the football program should have a higher level of discourse and more well researched and backed in fact arguments than what is spewed here on a daily basis.

@”Highly respected” my arse… – Paul Johnson is the one who brought Georgia Tech the “debacle named Groh” right after he brought them the other debacle named Wommack. Truth is, the debacle is really named “Johnson”. O’Leary OR Friedgen could coach circles around Johnson regardless of age. O’Leary is the only Tech coach to beat Georgia three years in a row since Bobby Dodd. And the problem with Groh wasn’t his age, it was that he isn’t a good coach. Why do you think that Virginia fired him?

You’re probably right that Tech won’t talk to O’Leary, though. They’ll probably just hire another mediocrity that can’t beat Georgia.

TIME IS UP WITH THE JOHNSON EXPERIMENT. HE HAS GONE DOWNHILL AND THE PLAYERS DO NOT RESPECT HIM. HE IS NOT A COACH THAT IS GOING TO WIN YEAR IN AND YEAR OUT WITH THAT OFFENSE IN A MAJOR CONFERENCE. IT WAS WORTH THE TRY BUT THE TIME IS UP. RAD IT IS TIME FOR A CHANGE!!!!!! YOU ARE LOSING YOUR FAN BASE AND NO KID IN HIS RIGHT MIND IS GOING TO COME THERE NOW IF HE HAS OPPORTUNITIES AT CLEMSON, FSU, ETC. AND WANTS TO GO TO THE NFL. I WILL NOT ATTEND ANOTHER GAME UNTIL THIS GUY IS GONE.

Wow, more intelligence spewed since my post…
@highly respected troll: O’Leary and Friedgen are both good coaches. But, Friedgen failed at Maryland. Where had CPJ failed before coming here? Why fire CPJ to hire a fired former ACC HC? Wasn’t that the argument against Al Groh? O’Leary also struggled fielding quality defenses. Remember Joe Hamilton’s Junior and Senior years? A lot like now, only Tevin Washington is no Joe Hamilton.

@time is up: You bring up another failed argument against CPJ. That he can’t produce NFL talent. Lets look at this logically. On defense, GT can produce NFL talent. They run a 3-4, and may move back to a 4-3. Both systems are run in the NFL. A quality DC can produce NFL draft picks. On offense, obviously the system can produce running backs. Jonathan Dwyer can attest to that. More than one NFL scout has been quoted as saying GT is good at preparing WR’s for the NFL due to the blocking training they receive. And if they’re talented enough, they come out of this system, just like Demaryus Thomas and Stephen Hill. Offensive lineman? Maybe a bit more challenging due to having mostly smaller OL’s, but can happen just like anywhere else. The only position that that argument may hold merit is at quarterback. And currently at QB we have maybe our highest rated recruit of the CPJ era in Vad Lee. So, that argument holds no weight.

@Rwill – Johnson hadn’t failed anywhere before, but he’s failed at Georgia Tech. I was an undergrad at Southern when Johnson was there and he had some great teams, the ‘98 and ‘99 versions being the best. In 1998 they went 14-0 before blowing the NC game against UMass and then they won the 1999 NC game against Youngstown State. They also won the 2000 NC, largely on the back of Adrian Peterson – a player recruited by Tracy Ham. But, Johnson’s two best teams were laden with talent largely recruited by Frank Ellwood and Tim Stowers.

As far as Friedgen, he was fired after being the ACC COTY (for the second time) and he won the ACC Championship his first year at Maryland. His offenses at GT were much better than what Johnson is producing now. Besides, I wasn’t suggesting that he should be the HC at Tech (though it would be an improvement).

@highly respected troll: CPJ has also been ACC COTY and won an ACC championship. Friedgen won his in his first year at Maryland. With someone else’s recruits. Where were the ACC championships when he had all his players at Maryland? Friedgen’s offenses at Tech weren’t better than CPJ’s. They are comparable, and definitely different, but both produce 400+ yards per game, and 30+ points per game. If you think Friedgen’s offense produced better than CPJ’s then post some stats to back it up. I posted the recruiting ranking to make my point, all you guys are doing are spouting off with no facts.

Do you not realize that in your first paragraph you say CPJ has failed at Tech (with an ACC championship and a winning percentage of .600), then in your second paragraph tout Friedgen’s successes at Maryland (ACC championship, and a winning percentage of .600).

In your first paragraph, you say Johnson won national championships largely with others’ recruits. In your second paragraph, you then tout Friedgen, who won the ACC championship in his first year (WITH OTHERS’ RECRUITS).

Can you people not see the lack of logic you are using? You want to fire a head coach with a .600 winning percentage, to hire a previously fired ACC coach, who is 66, with a .600 winning percentage? What???

Why can’t we write contracts for coaches based on performance? Pay CPJ $1M/year and $100k/win, double for UGA and ACCCG, and Bowl games. That way, when we lose, we can at least say it didn’t cost us anything.

Tech sure has some sorry lawyers….also failed to successfully argue our appeal for our ACC championship in 2009.

As for football—the TO is a good offense, but dadgum let’s add a few plays to it. As some have pointed out Vad, stumbles alot and I do not think he is coordinated enough to run the TO–so DO NOT RUN IT with him! Is the goal to win or stubbornly run your offense? TW runs the TO fairly effectively—he doesn’t pass well. Days, runs the TO so-so, seemed scared on the pitch, can throw a decent pass, but has ball control problems. Vad is still a bit raw, has a good arm and good vision/athletic ability when running, but doesn’t look comfortable running the TO and making reads—the reads are complex and Vad seems to be still in thinking mode not reaction mode. He cannot run the TO well.
So what is CPJ to do? If the TO must be run, then TW is the guy. If we have enough confidence to put in plays from the pistol, then run Vad from that. Or do both and interchange them even within a series. If it’s 3rd and 6 bring in Vad and throw a pass. Once Ds start adjusting, then run a sweep with Vad….throw on 1st down with TW…in other words, quit being predictable….go out of your way to not be predictable. Until we learn how to pass rush, the D is not going to get much better so the offense has to pick up the slack. We do have the tools, they just need to be deployed in an unconvetional manner.

@RWill – Friedgen did win in 2001 with other coachs’ recruits but he also won ACC COTY in 2011 with his own recruits. Besides, if you read my posts again you’ll see that I never touted Friedgen as HC at Tech. I said bring him AND O’Leary back. I think Friedgen makes a great OC (maybe Johnson, too) but I would prefer Tech have O’Leary as HC.

Johnson’s offenses are comparable to Friedgen’s? You must have selective memory. In 1998 and 1999 the Jackets put-up points and yardage that Johnson’s trainwreck can only dream of. Remember the 1999 game against Florida State? The Jackets put-up over 500 yards and 35 points in Tallahassee that night against the team that won the NC that year. Johnson’s crew wouldn’t have managed 150 yards and ten points against that crew. Hell, they couldn’t manage much more than 150 yards againt 4-loss BYU yesterday.

Paul Johnson HAS failed at Tech. Want to talk his record against Georgia? When you lose to your arch-rival three-of-four (including to two of their worst teams in years, i.e., 2009 and 2010) you stink. When you let Middle Tennessee run-over you, you stink! When you can’t win bowl games EVER, you stnk. And newsflash – there is NO 2009 ACC Championship at Tech anymore. Hell, he lost to a 6-5 Georgia team in 2009 right before his offense looked totally inept in the Orange Bowl against Iowa.

Quit making excuses for this clown. The more you guys defend him, the deeper you’re going to sink.

Even if I concede that the remaining games should be Vads. It’s not because he was better. Yeah he got 3 on the board but that was after 45 yards in penalties!!!! Hell Tevin got us in field goal position, it’s not his fault the kicker missed. Let’s just face it our offense got owned. They saw us coming a mile away and Vad was no answer. The crowd jeered just for seeing him, but he was not any better behind the wheel. He jumped around a little and got you all in the game, but it didn’t amount to anything.

Nothing to see here folks, same old Georgia Tech, find a new system where you pass with your QB, you let a bunch of Mormons come in and manhandle you. BYU did what youre supposed to do with this offense and that is plug up the holes, then what. At least Navy passes more now, youre too predictable, anyway Im done, just wanted to say hi, Jay – Middle Tennessee State Alum :)
