Georgia Tech-BYU preview

Three storylines

Can Georgia Tech move the ball?

BYU is ranked No. 4 in total defense and No. 8 in rushing and scoring defense. The Cougars have a formidable front seven, starring end Ezekiel Ansah and anchored by nose tackle Romney Fuga. That said, BYU was last seen getting smoked for 270 rushing  yards by Notre Dame. Tech, No. 3 in the country in rushing offense, is coming off a powerful effort in which it had battered Boston College for 241 rushing yards by halftime.

Will Tech’s defense take another step?

Against Boston College, the Yellow Jackets tackled better and were eons better on third downs than they had been previously. The question is, how much did that have to do with Boston College? BYU’s offense isn’t a powerhouse, either, but the Cougars ought to be able to run the ball better than the Eagles did. They also use a no-huddle offense, which has given Tech problems. The Cougars can be pressured, though, so Saturday might be the time for the Tech pass rush to raise its play.

Whose kicking game will come through?

Tech’s David Scully and Justin Moore are a combined 4-for-9 on field-goal tries. BYU’s Riley Stephenson and Justin Sorensen are slightly better, 5-for-10. Sorensen, who has had back problems, and Moore, who replaced Scully last week, are the likely candidates for each side. The lack of success that both sides have had could well influence the chances that both teams will take to avoid having to try field goals.

A win for Georgia Tech would …

Even its record at .500 for the third time this season.

A win for BYU would …

End its seven-game losing streak in the Eastern time zone.

Matchup to watch

Georgia Tech center Jay Finch vs. BYU nose tackle Romney Fuga

Finch gives up about 33 pounds to the 6-foot-2, 318-pound Fuga. It will be imperative for Finch to create push against Fuga, the anchor point for the Cougars’ 3-4 defense. If Fuga is driving Finch into the backfield, it will mess up Tech’s option game before it even gets a chance to start.

The history book

Series record: The series is tied, 1-1

Last meeting: In the debut of then-freshman quarterback Reggie Ball, the Jackets led 13-7 at halftime but never scored again in a 24-13 defeat in Aug. 2003, in Provo, Utah. Tech held the ball for 20:54 and gained 243 yards of offense.

Ken, the reverse of this may also be of interest as BYU starting center is out and the backup weighs 270 at best.

fuzzybee’s link says sub-270 # center is regaining the starting center’s job….TJ will have at least 70# on him and several inches. TJ should just pick him up and set him aside.

Ken, it might be a good idea to add a filter for comments that consist solely of “Enter your comments here.” It’s not a huge problem, but I see different people accidentally submitting it every once in a while. Just an idea.

And it happens to the best of us, Supersize.

I don’t think TJ’s gonna get that much of a shot to have a great game. I think BYU will plan for the size mismatch and double-team him pretty much every snap. They’ll force us to rely on our LBs for pressure, which we’ll have to do a great job of balancing with containment. Should be an interesting dynamic.

@ 1xUnc1c0……yes, it does. But don’t look for the AJC to do anything sensible about the blogs. Ken does his best to keep things clean and smoothly operating, but it’s really out of his control. The powers that be have made it clear they don’t really care about the blogs, so don’t expect any improvements anytime soon.

Looking forward to seeing a better pass rush and a big day from the A-Backs as they get to the edge a step quicker than the BYU LBs.

And later in the day, as Maxine Waters would say, “Go Gator”.

Just curious, on another blog, someone indicated the other guys would place many on the line to stop the B back dive–does that mean that if the QB gives the ball to the B back anyway, he made a bad read?

Thanks for the BYU article fuzzybee78. Very detailed.

My thinking is that BYU may come in a little flat. Big emotional game on the road and a tough loss.
Long trip to play a team with a losing record. This has flat written all over it. But large BYU crowd could pick up the team.

I say Tech but with no money on the table.

When are you guys heading into the stadium? I can’t get to the game until 2-230. Didn’t know if there was a chance a beer might be availble at that time.

Well, this one should really tell us a lot. BYU may be the best team we have played so far (with the probable exception of Clemson). Win this one and the season can be salvaged. Another loss, and its a sad day. Go Jackets

BYU’s D vs GT’s O should be an interesting matchup today. BYU’s linebackers Kyle Van Noy, Uona Kavienga and Brandon Ogletree are arguably the best line backing corp in the nation. The corners and safeties however have been discovered as the Cougars Achilles heel. I say BYU in a close one, but if GT finds a way to beat DB’s Jordan Johnson and Spencer Hadley over the top…all bets are off.
GO COUGS!!!!!

Not to mention the Cougars have an absolute beast up front in “Ziggy” Ansah. Key for GT in this is to force Riley Nelson to make poor decisions with the football, pressure him and he either makes you pay big with his feet or gift wraps a turnover for you…watch the WR duo in Cody Hoffman and Ross Apo although Nelson generally doesn’t have the arm to beat you deep

I wouldn’t count on BYU to come out flat in this game after their 17-14 loss to ND. GT is BYU’s last quality opponent for the year until the bowl game. They play Idaho, SJSU and NMSU in November…aka this is BYU’s last chance to turn a subpar season into a mediocre 8-4 season. Expect BYU to look for vindication in Atlanta.
