Notes: Johnson’s concerns about BYU

Notes from coach Paul Johnson’s news conference Tuesday

1. Johnson expressed concern for defending BYU quarterback Riley Nelson, noting his experience and mobility.

“He’s got a strong arm, but he’s really hurt people when they get out of their rush lanes and he pulls the thing down on boots and run. The quarterback is a good player,” he said.

More broadly, Johnson anticipates a team that will test the Yellow Jackets with its size and strength.

“They’ll pass the look test, I promise you,” he said. “When we played them every year when I was at the University of Hawai’i, you won’t play too many teams that look any better getting off the bus than BYU.”

2. Johnson liked the way the rotation with the defensive line worked, with backups Adam Gotsis, Shawn Green, Anthony Williams and Euclid Cummings getting considerable time.

“I don’t know that anybody stands out and is that much better than anybody coming in,” he said. “So everybody gets some snaps.”

3. Nothing different with the kicking situation from Monday’s notes, although punter Sean Poole will be back holding.

4. Daniel Drummond is splitting snaps with Jabari Hunt-Days at the inside linebacker position opposite Quayshawn Nealy.

5. Johnson said something needs to be done to improve the pass rush, whether it’s blitzing, running stunts with the linemen or simply the linemen winning one-on-one against offensive linemen. Johnson said that the game video shows that players are actually getting closer to the quarterback than it seems during games, but, it is “clearly an issue.”

Another solution is dropping more players into pass coverage to flood passing lanes.

“You can’t just be one-dimensional,” he said. “You have to be able to do both.”

Regarding Nelson, Johnson acknowledged that forcing a faster player like him out of the pocket isn’t necessarily the answer.

“There are certain guys that you play that you want to keep in the pocket and you’d maybe rather see them throw it than you would pull it down and run with it,” Johnson said. “He’s pretty good at both but he can kill you if you don’t contain him because he’s got good speed, he’s a good athlete and he really hurts people when he gets out of the pocket.”

6. Johnson credited the success on third down (Boston College was 1-for-9) to better run defense. Tech gave up just 32 yards on 16 attempts. It yielded third-and-long situations, which the Eagles couldn’t convert.

In those situations, “You can play at the sticks and come up and tackle them and they had to punt the ball,” he said.

(It bears mentioning that Tech was having equal trouble with third-and-long and third-and-short earlier this season.)

7. There is no specific plan to play quarterback Vad Lee as of Tuesday. Johnson said he will see how practices goes this week before deciding.

“Clearly, he’s a good athlete and capable of making big plays,” Johnson said. “He also had the ball out a couple of times, we’ve got to do better on some read parts of the thing but he’s an exciting player and he kind of gives you a boost when he gets out there. No question about it.”

8. Defensively, Johnson said that the Cougars are “big and physical up front” and capable of stopping the run without secondary support. BYU also shows a lot of different looks on third-and-long, blitzes and fire-zone blitzes. He noted end Ezekiel Anseh, calling him a probable first-round draft pick.

9. A-back Synjyn Days’ playing time was limited Saturday because “he and I weren’t on the same page,” Johnson said. Johnson didn’t provide detail but suggested it was an off-field matter. Overall, Days is practicing better and will play against BYU with a good week of practice.

10. Offensive tackle Will Jackson’s shoulder injury muddles the offensive line depth. If he can’t play, Morgan Bailey will start at right tackle and either Bryan Chamberlain or Tyler Kidney would be the first off the bench. At guard, the first sub would be either Trey Braun or Errin Joe. If he does play, Johnson said that Jackson, who didn’t practice Monday and won’t again Tuesday afternoon, would be the first to rotate in at guard and tackle.

11. Offensive tackle Ray Beno (ankle) and B-back Zach Laskey (shoulder), both of whom left the game with injuries, practiced Monday.

12. Johnson, who voiced his displeasure Saturday (for the second time this year, that I can recall) with the lack of support offered by reserve players from the sideline, offered further explanation. He called it a matter of immaturity and observed that it has increased over the years.

“You’re part of the team and you should be there cheering on your teammates and be excited to watch what’s going on and not in la-la land,” he said.

Johnson particularly directed his frustration with players “who understand they’re probably not going to play, but that still doesn’t change,” he said. “It should still be a privilege to be able to dress out and have your name on the back of your uniform and be on the sidelines at Georgia Tech. It’s not something that you should just kind of show up.”

13. The players of the game for the Boston College win were A-back B.J. Bostic, safety Isaiah Johnson and long snapper Tyler Morgan. Bostic had five carries for 28 yards and two catches for 66 yards. Both receptions were enormous. The first was a phenomenal 39-yard catch on a 3rd-and-8 on the opening drive that prevented Tech from having to punt from its own 8-yard line. The second was a 27-yarder in the second quarter that converted a 3rd-and-26 and kept alive a possession that ended in a touchdown for a 14-0 lead.

Johnson made four solo tackles, tied for most total tackles on the team and had a forced fumble on the first play of the second half that the Jackets converted into a field goal. Morgan had a mistake-free afternoon on 11 snaps.

In case you missed it…

When the AJC and Cox Media Group-Atlanta upgraded the look and feel of the AJC.com website, they decided to postpone the really crucial part: changing the blogging interface so that real log-ins would be required. That was not done because of “priorities” and “reallocation of funds.” Oh, the ad revenue will probably increase because of the pretty new look, but you, the end user are apparently less important than the window dressing.

By deferring the upgrade to the blogging environment they made the choice that certain features are going to continue as before. This means that somebody with Cox Media Group-Atlanta will have to manually remove offending posts when requested by users.

That means that

- racist
- misogonistic
- obscene
- homophobic
- threatening
- name calling

posts, as well as trolling creeps posing as other users, particularly on the sports blogs,
will be allowed to continue.

This is business-as-usual for Cox Media Group-Atlanta
and the AJC.com, I guess. That promise of enhanced customer experience falls real short for end users, doesn’t it?

In order to protect your children from this trash content, I suggest that you set up individual user accounts in your operating system. For example, in Windows you keep the Admin account for yourself only, with a secret login name and password. Then, set up login accounts for the kids. As Admin, you can then enable PARENTAL CONTROLS to block offensive sites on the web. For your kids, I think that http://www.ajc.com web site should be blocked, because the content is certainly offensive. You don’t want your children to be engaged in posting with these creeps, do you?

If you are concerned about the Cox Media Group-Atlanta’s wrong-headed priorities, let them know via e-mail or phone call. You are the customer, and their senior management claim to want to be sensitive to your customer experience.

Lotta notes today, Ken. Thanks!

I wonder if BYU looks better coming off the bus because many are older. As for the lack of pass rush, why not give up rushing the QB on passing downs and play nine DBs in coverage and use two LBs to keep the QB in the pocket? I have long thought that would be an effective strategy, especially in the red zone.

We don’t need to worry about BYU.
I checked with the football experts on their blogs in Utah and every high school in Utah has a QB with a better arm than Riley Nelson.
Ken provided the link so we could observe a similar QB debate.
With that kind of sure thing inside info, I’m going to bet the farm on GT.

1) What were some of the problems on the sideline?
2) Could you ask Coach Kelly about changing from the field to the press box? And how “the group” of coaches are going to keep the kids motivated for 4 qtrs? or was the defense more of a prevent defense in the 4th qtr last Sat.

To me it seems that if i had let 3 teams score 40 or more on me in consecutive weeks i would be focused to make sure i didn’t allow any scores if i could help it.

Why change Jamea to safety from Corner? Was Golden just not getting the job done?

Thanks!

Well, there you have it: Days hasn’t played much because he and CPJ “aren’t on the same page”. In other words, CPJ is trying to break a player (kinda like breaking a horse), teach him a lesson. It’s his way, or the bench, regardless of whether you are the better player. Vad hasn’t played much for the same reason, although Vad is recently showing signs of breaking apparently (based on playing time vs. BC).

Maybe CPJ is more concerned about absolute control than winning. Or maybe he thinks that absolute control leads to winning? This is old-school mentality.

I’m pretty sure he’s not a “player’s coach”.

Wow, Ken, did CPJ...

Did he by any chance say that BYU has the best long snapper in the country? Maybe the “getting off the bus” comment was comparable to the snapper quote from Dooley…

@AtWork.
Jamea is good at playing center field and making picks.
Maybe they think he’ll get more chances at safety.
If he plays corner, they can just throw to the other side or slot receiver.
He also is a good tackler.
Some fans are critical of our secondary but with the time we give opposing QBs, who couldn’t get open?

AtWork (funny handle) – i gather that some of the walk-ons weren’t paying attention/encouraging their teammates. As Johnson put it, “If you want to giggle it up and laugh and cut up and have fun and dance to the video board, then go get in the stands.”
the problem defensively, it seemed to me, was when Boston College went to the no-huddle. I’m not sure if it was causative or just a matter of the score, but they were moving it pretty effectively from there on out. I will try to delver into it further.
thomas is a better safety than golden, who is a corner who was subbing at safety. jacket detective also has a point, that i think coaches wanted to get him more playmaking chances.
i don’t know if i’m overexplaining, but Johnson’s “getting off the bus” comment was basically meant to say that they’re a big, physically imposing team. it’s a football-ism, kind of like dick vitale’s all-airport team. and, george stein, i believe you are absolutely correct.
GT Joe – i think you’re misreading it. it was a one-game situation.

As I already noted, sometimes it’s hard to determine if the QB “reads” correctly or if Johnson called a special play.

Now one guy suggesting Tech give up the pass rush and another is stating that not rushing/giving the QB too much time to pick out & throw is a major problem. No wonder I get confused!

I thought that might be it. I would want Jamea on the field at all times…he is our best tackler in the open field. Sweeting has been lacking on some plays. Don’t know why but kinda like a gambling CB either TD or Pick.

@Ken

Thanks! BC was moving the ball well but it seemed like the defense knew it was a victory and was ok with garbage yardage and scores. I wish our defense had the fire that the BC QB had. He wanted that last play and wanted to score. GT needs to play with some fire even though the win was locked up.

I live in Utah, so I’m getting plenty of intel on BYU and Riley Nelson.
Good athlete? Yes
Mistake prone? Abs-so-frigin-lute-ly!
Best QB on BYU? NO … Riley, the SR, was incumbent starter. Got hurt, and in came, FR, Taysom Hill … bigger, faster, better arm than Nelson. And not mistake prone. Hill suffered a season-ending injury on an inexcusable play at the end of the BYU-Utah St game (6-3 Cougar W). Instead of kneeling on ball, BYU coach called a QB run play, and QB got injured.
Nelson, IMO, tries to do TOO much, and it leads to lots of mistakes/TOs. He LOVES running the ball on passing plays. And gets yards too, but mistakes are there if he’s defended well. Maybe GT should use Jemea & Chris Milton to “spy” Nelson the entire game?

BYU, b/c of their D, is 4-4. If not, they’d be 3-5 at best. Only wins would be Wash St, Weber St, Hawaii, with Ls to Boise (7-6), Utah (24-21) ND (17-13) being much worse (even though NONE of those 3 has a good O). And their 6-3 win over USU would be a loss.

IOW, their D is good. However, I’m more optimistic that GT can move the ball, effectively, on the ground after seeing BYU’s rush D the past 2 games 118-OrgSt, 270-ND.

@Supersize I’ve been doing some thinking about Isiah Johnson. What if he’s actually not misplaying a receiver, but rather someone else is and he’s the guy that has to tackle em. I noticed against BC over the weekend that on a zone defense play, Drummond was covering a guy in his zone a just released him. The QB hit the receiver in stride and Johnson had to come up and make the play. Now why Drummond released the guy with no team mate around to pick him up, i have no idea. Johnson did make the tackle, but after a first down. With that said, who’s to say that hasn’t been happening all year?

GT Joe- You’ve hit the nail on the head. That’s exactly how he coaches. If you’re on board you play, if not, you don’t play no matter what your talent level is. This is well known by past and current players. You see it in the attitude of players and it’s starting to turn ugly.

GT

October 23rd, 2012
5:39 pm

GT Fan- Haha I laughed pretty hard at that one. Same situation as I mentioned above. There are players with better talent on the team. They don’t fit his scheme, and, therefore, can’t play. If he’d tailor the offense (say like Fridge did for lil’ Joe) we’d see more of these players on the field.

I don’t think you can really teach killer instinct. I do think you can uncover it…bring it out. I would like to see recruits coming in have it. I think Autry has it. I think Lee has it. Just want to see everyone have it.

Here’s to hoping that some tough practices help bring it out.

GT

Simple solution really, recruit your type of players for your system (he obviously can’t). He then moves to the lower tier recruits not picked up by other southern schools. These players don’t exactly fit his system and refuse to adapt. Therefore, we see a dropoff in talent through his scheme on the field. All comes down to recruiting.

MaconGTFan

October 23rd, 2012
5:43 pm

@GT Why in the hell would you want a player on the field, no matter how talented he is, that isn’t on board? This isn’t a run of the mill offense that just anyone can jump in and play. Show you understand on the practice field and that you’re a team player and you play. Bottom line. Vad hasn’t played as much cause he doesn’t understand the playbook as well as Tevin. And per PJ he’s still missing his reads. When Vad understands the read aspect of this offense, then he will be the starter. There is no breaking people like Joe said. It about understanding the offense. And as for Days not playing, that is beyond me. He’s shown he can and will block, but my guess is that PJ is worried about his fumblitis that he showed last year.

GT

October 23rd, 2012
5:51 pm

Macon- I totally agree. If you want to play learn the plays. Most players don’t want to learn the offense and can’t play (even though their talent level is high and they feel like they deserve to play- hence breaking them). I was just simply explaining why we’re in our current situation with this team. It’s a brilliant system. Just get the correct players on the team.

MaconGTFan

October 23rd, 2012

I personally don’t think it’s that bad of a situation, minus the receivers. Autry not counting. Even though they can block so that’s a plus. Look at Orwin Smith, 2* coming out of high school, but plays as if he’s a 5*. On the other hand there’s Perkins. I think he was a 4*, but hasn’t seen the field and was beat out by a sophomore and converted QB. PJ has called him out in the past over his supposed entitlement to play. The talent isn’t as bad either on the o-line and on the defensive side of the ball. If Tech had a defense, they’re sitting at 6-1 if not 7-0. I personally think the Klempsum game could have gone either way.

I would imagine that every school in America has similar players. They think they DESERVE to play just by virtue of the fact that they are on scholarship. I’ve never done this on any blog before, but I’ve heard enough from people that have no idea and are making comments solely on speculation.
GT Joe, PJ believes heavily in good ole fashioned discipline. I for one, love that about him…look 90 miles to the East and you’ll see many fans crying for their coach to instill discipline. None of us know what the disagreement between Days and PJ were, but I can guarantee you that the discipline was warranted, probably something boneheaded like not showing up for class or the weightroom or late to meetings, etc. PJ nips it in the bud before it becomes a bigger problem and infests the team and I like that.
Secondly, I personally know several guys that I played ball with that played for PJ at Southern. And I can tell you right now that the players love his desire and determination to win and demanding excellence from his players. In fact, when he was hired, I asked one of my friends that played for him what he thought and his comment was, “It’s a great thing, the players will run through a brick wall for Coach Johnson.” Players don’t say those sorts of things about many coaches.
Lastly, the issue with the younger players horsing around on the sidelines speaks exactly to discipline. By saying it’s gotten worse over the years, PJ is insinuating that the players are coming in more immature these days. And why? Because it starts at home. PJ can’t do anything during the middle of the game, but I bet you he has some grad assist. watching and reporting back and if those little boys want to act like, then they will never see the field.
Ok, I’m off my soap box now and will try to stay off. :)

And i hate to tell ya but the reason days does not get snaps is because he is a fumble machine both in practice and in the games. that is a plain ol lack of focus on his part. after all, it is not like he is missing an arm or hands now is it? of course if you were real fans you would know that. your just fans of whining an crying an picking at our players and our coaches. none of you would dare say what you do on this blog to any of the players faces. bawk!

cpj not a players coach? last time i looked the players/fans at navy an ga southern loved cpj so much that they are now sidewalk jacket fans. i have seen post after post on the blogs saying as much.

i have to tell ya… we have some of the most ignorant whiners for fans i have ever seen and some are posting in this thread!

I haven’t been to Athens since 98 and I don’t care if TECH were the UGa freshmen and going to win by 50 I am not going to a football game in ATHENS.

GT players don’t improve very much under CPJ and his staff. What you see as a freshman or soph. is basically what you get as a senior. There is an improvement progression under coaches like N.SABAN and U.MEYER.S.DAYS has been there 3 yrs.and look at him.

Wow seems like some pple are having a hard time accepting that CPJ is the HEAD COACH, the boss, head honcho, etc… It is his team and not the players nor the fans for that matter who run the team. He does. But i get it. We love winning and that is not happening so your taking shots at the right person at least.

Worried about BYU. If their D shuts us down, I’m pretty sure our worn out D will have another 4th quarter catastrophe. We’re gonna need to find a rythm on O and maintain it. This is going to be a true test to see what we’re made of and if we have any chance of turning our season around this game will determine that.

i suggest you email drad and volunteer to coach the team. show us your stuff.

as far as saban goes…. comparing him to cpj is apples to grapes. are you really serious? sheeeesh,.

saban’s players dont have to go to school. bama can hide players in joke classes. bama is a football factory as is uf. every player cpj signs must meet the approval of the hill. bama and uf never have to deal with anything like that. of course you should know that but yet you still whine.

furthermore….. saban and meyer over recruit. i promise you that days would never have lasted 3 years with coach saban. PROMISE. we get bama cast off’s. dont we have a wr that bama cast off that is doing absolutely nothing at gt either? but he will stay with us an graduate using up a spot on that 85 man roster.

saban would have found a way or reason to remove days off the team an moved on to a player who does ‘get on board’. that is what over signing 35 players ever year will do for you.

gt and cpj over the last 4 years have averaged around 20 signees every year. signees that must get by the hill…. every year.

by my book that means that in a 5 year span… bama has the opportunity to not only take the top players in the nation (that gt has no shot at) but they also get to cherry pick the best 85 players from that crop of (35 x5 =) 175 nationally elite players they sign.

and you have the nerve to even compare saban’s situation with that of cpj’s? lmao at you dude. your hilarious!

give me a break.

get real would you!

I have gotten 4 FREE tickets to the UGA-Tech game in Athens every other year for over 25 years. Six years ago my wife said she would never, ever go back, free tickets or not. She simply had her fill of rude, obnoxious, arrogant, intoxicated UGA fans who—well, you get the picture. As another Tech fan noted, we have been to games at Clemson, Auburn, and Virginia Tech, to name a few, and have never suffered anywhere near the kind of abuse that we have received in Athens.

Are fans at Tech home games immune to such behavior. No, in fact, my wife cussed out a so-called Yellow Jacket fan after the Miami last month for making a totally uncalled for comment to a friend who was wearing Miami colors. Her exact words were: “Put on Red and Black and go to Athens where you belong!”

So yes, every school has fans who exhibit abhorent behavior. There is just a much, much greater percentage of such idiots in Athens. Emphasis on “percentage,” not total numbers.

As for me, I’ll be in Athens on Nov. 24th, just as I have been there every even year since 1962 when I went to the game as a Boy Scout usher. I’ll tune out the idiots and cheer for the Jackets, just as I have been doing for 50 years.

@ ole yeller…..this was the take on it by an Alabama sportswriter…….

We were playing Tech in Birmingham. There were no hard feelings beforehand. I remember Alice Dodd came up to me before the game, and we visited. Anyway, in the fourth quarter Holt was dropping back on a punt. His assignment was to take the end out. Graning was the end, and when they came together Holt reared up and hit Graning with his elbow. The official had his back on the play and didn’t see it. I didn’t see it until I looked at the films. Actually we complained on the play, because Billy Richardson was interfered with catching the punt.

Well, it wouldn’t happen once in 15,000 times, because he didn’t hit him hard enough, but the elbow got through Graning’s face guard and fractured his jaw. After the game Tonto Coleman of Tech, Dodd’s assistant, came over to our dressing room to congratulate our boys, and he said something about Graning being hurt, and I called Holt over, and he said, “Yessir, coach, I’m sorry. I made a mistake,” or something. Well, the next night, after our TV program, I went to New Orleans on Sugar Bowl business, and I still didn’t know Graning was hurt seriously.

There was commentary earlier on CPJ’s leadership style. There are General Lee’s and General Jackson’s of the world—both were great generals and they were miles apart in terms of style. Lee was loved, Jackson was feared and respected. Both delivered results. The head coach should lead as his natural personality suits. Subordinates should adjust their style to counterbalance the head coach. CMR is more a “General Lee” and should have an assistant coach to be the disciplinarian. CPJ is more like Jackson and his assistants should be more positive and encouraging. Having complementary leadership styles among coaches produces the best results.

How is it that Days, in his 3rd year at GT, and Lee, in his 2nd year, aren’t “on the same page” or aren’t “making the reads” yet?

Either one of 3 things:

1. Players can’t learn or refuse to learn (doubtful).
2. Coach can’t teach (doubtful).
3. Coach doesn’t feel the players are being good, obedient little soldiers (likely).

I wonder if CPJ’s style would survive in the NFL? uhhh….no.

GT Joe

October 24th, 2012

CPJ’s style works perfectly in HS, ga southern, and Navy; the kids realize that they aren’t going to the NFL, less talented, so they play with more heart.

When you get to big boy football (BCS conferences) and NFL level, the players need a different type of style. Hard nose doesn’t work. There are other options for players (transfers, trades, etc.). They don’t NEED to be there.

I guarantee you that Days and Lee have seriously contemplated transferring.

GT Joe

Oh, and the folks saying “would you rather have a softy like Richt?”:

Umm look at his record. I’ll take a softy if we can average 10 wins a year. Richt gets it. Being a tough guy all the time, teaching kids lessons by not playing them, it’s a stupid mind game. It’s not coach vs. player. It’s coach AND player.

What CPJ fails to understand is that running the offense to perfection is required at Navy and GS because of the lower athleticism level. At THIS level, athleticism can make up for a lack of perfection, AND WIN YOU MORE GAMES.

5150 UOAD

GT JOE……Richt had most of his WIN against the bad SEC teams. Richt doesn’t have to do MUCH to get really good recruits. UGa has more talent than 80% of the teams they play every year. Winning at UGa is not that hard. Winning the EAST or the SEC Title is and Richt sucks at that.

I wonder GT JOE if you are more about winning on the field than winning in life. No I am not embodying Charlie Sheen, but I do feel like saying CPJ is trying to teach kids to be men. Yes, in all aspects of live, not just on the football field. With most of your points, GT JOE, I agree. However, on the topic of CPJ as a teacher/coach we disagree.

UOAD: To start with, Richt is smart enough to put his best athletes on the field. Maybe if they were better coached, they could win some NCs.

CPJ doesn’t put his best athletes on the field in the first place. He puts in the guys that make the least mistakes, regardless of the outcome of the mistakes. Wrong philosophy.

For example, he’d rather play Tevin than Vad because Tevin make less “read mistakes”, but he doesn’t care about turnovers, INTs, and EXECUTION mistakes (underthrown passes, etc.), where Vad has no such mistakes and Tevin has many.

Backwards thinking.

Coach Z: CPJ is graded on one thing: winning on the field. This IS all that matters; has an AD ever fired a coach because of what his players became after graduation? No. Conversely, has an AD ever kept a losing coach because he was a good mentor to the kids? No. Al Groh’s firing proves me right.

Coach Z…..Yeah, I’ve been in those meetings myself, on both sides, & in most cases, by far, all came out better for it. Joe loves to sling hash. He probably has never spanked his children, if he has any. Like so many nowadays, these kids need discipline & leadership in their lives if they are to grow into good, productive, contributing, responsible MEN. Timeouts teach a youngster nothing. This is much like physics. For every action, there is an equal & opposite reaction. Same in life. Discipline begets responsibility. Selah.

From my perspective you guys have the “growing pain” of a new system even though it isnt that new. That is what Bronco (BYU Coach) went through his first couple of years. Once he got everyone on the same page program wise kids know what to expect. Not to mention some of the are pretty good. 5 out of 7 10 win seasons to show for it. Alot to be said for philosophy buy in. But it all goes back to the kind of kid you recruit BYU has a very small window they look at for obvious reasons….hence national championships will be very hard to come buy…good teams but not elite

GT Joe, I don’t believe, went to Tech. He does not come across as one that graduated from Tech. If he did, he either didn’t learn, or has forgotten, the Tech way. GT still operates under the “Total Person Concept”. That should be self explanatory. Tech succeeds, as do Tech people, with integrity and responsibility and doing things the right way, something my Dad began instilling in his 3 sons at a very young age. Joe’s way apparently does not. His rants here say otherwise, at least to me. I know nothing about Joe except what I see him saying here. Nor do I want to know anything more of Joe. In fact, I would just as soon he had never made his appearance here. He should fit in very well on the Georgie blogs.

That maybe true on some points but i told them it is not fun to go to Athens. i wouldn’t go even if i KNEW we would win and i could bring home a piece of the Hedges and pay to have a picture of me Urinating on RUSS now Uga IX. I have been to Auburn when they were top 10 and we were not supposed to have a shot. Same for VT and FSU but I ENJOYED the games and SPENDING my money and time at those games. GT Joe must have been a heckuva youth coach, since he knows so much more then CPJ. Tell us more about your youth coach experience Joe, I’m sure we will be impressed with your resume.

Bottom line is you EARN your playing time on Rose Bowl field before you get on Grant Field.

Something tells me that “earning playing time on the practice field” isn’t enough for CPJ. He looks for full submission.

Wow, the blind faith you folks have in CPJ’s decision making is mind boggling. I mean, this is the guy who kep Al Groh for 3+ years?!?!

Just the fact that Tevin started AT ALL this season makes me think CPJ is wrong for the job. Don’t get me wrong, I love his offense, but his personnel decisions are questionable at best.

How on earth Snoddy, Days and Lee aren’t playing is beyond me. Snoddy has 9 carries on the season, and DNP in 5 games. WTF.

When it became evident that CAG wasn’t going to get the job done, CPJ acted and fired him. Since you’re Captain Hindsight, I guess you knew it was the wrong hire.

I’ve been a season ticket holder for 30 years, so I was there when Bill Lewis was hired and fired, and only an idiot would compare CPJ with Bill Lewis.

Same goes for Al Groh. Did you not trust him because he was in the closed practices? Did you not trust his decision making on personnel decisions, substitutions?

Help me understand why you believe in CPJ more than these other coaches.

You didn’t answer my question. How long have you had tickets? I’m a Tech man win or lose. My guess is you have “no skin in the game”.

Bill Lewis & CAG were fired for not performing.

CPJ has the highest winning percentage of any Tech coach in his first four years. He haw won an ACC Championship and taken us to a BCS bowl. He has a NC while at GSU and he won at Navy. What was your youth league record?

That is the same thing you have done about players that you haven’t seen play. I do agree that my tickets do not mean I know more than you about football, but it does mean I’m invested in the program and I do more than talk.

You can’t be “witholding” because of poor performance, if your statement that you “never will have tickets” is true.

You told me a few weeks ago your only coaching experience was in youth league. Unless that’s not true.

True I will never have season tix. But I do go to some games. The better the season, the more I’ll go see. This year, went to the Presby game. Can’t say I’m interested in going to any more games, unless Vad gets the start. If Vad starts, I’ll go see his games. Tevin? I already know that product. Not interested.

GT Joe

You know what I find interesting? When Vad gets to play, CPJ said there is “more energy”. I can see the crowd is definitely more energized, and the sidelines are more energized too (even visible on TV).

So the question is: Is the team sending a message that they want Vad to play over TW? Is the “la la land” comment by CPJ only when TW is in the game?

To me, it’s getting obvious. After the VT interception, a quick pan to TW on the sideline showed him ALONE. Same thing after the Miami misread on 4th down. Doesn’t seem like the team is rallying around TW.

I also find it interesting that TW sat out of practice yesterday, after those comments after the game about his “rhythm” when Vad comes in the game.

Is there trouble in paradise?

Tech Troll 13

I’m sure you could see on your TV that Vad ran zero TO plays in the first half. Our team is built around the TO. If you can’t do that, how can you be the starter?

I have no problem using VL in obvious passing situations, like the last two minutes of the half. He is a better passer than TW, even though his stats didn’t bear that out Saturday.

The rest of your comments were more “mind reading” and conjecture to support your argument. No facts to be found.

GT Joe

October 24th, 2012

Troll: Here’s a fact that you have wrong; “our team is built around the TO”? No. This is a fallacy.

The TO is ONE play run out of our spread formation. In fact, CPJ has said on many occasions that the TO is run less than 20% of the time, sometimes less than 10% of the time. It all depends on how the game is going, what the defense is showing, etc.

The fact that Vad ran zero TO plays tells me nothing. You ASSUME he can’t run it because CPJ didn’t call the TO play. And you know what happens when you assume.

Tech Troll 13

Well, well. Gt Joe does not go to games, but “watches” them at home. He almost surely does not go to practice. So, Joe, exactly how is it you go about analyzing the relative capabilities of the players? Becaise it sure can’t be from their on field performance. Days is a fine blocker, but he is a fumble machine. Lee has obvious talent, but it is clear he has little skill making the reads in the TO. And that IS the offense we run.

I don’t know what you see on your TV, but it must look very different than what I see at the games. Or you are delusional.

The BYU guys are big but a little slower that your typical guys. Spread the field, run wide often, wear them down, keep the ball for long drives. Then their QB/offense will be on the field very little. Also their D will be tired by the 4th quarter. Keep the pedal down no matter what.

Maybe alot of West Coast hs players want to play at BYU because of the Mormon history of having alot of wives, which some still do, one guy up in Canada specifically who I found out about on national tv. The male gets plenty of females to cook food, wash dishes and clothes, do all the household chores. That frees him up to do the outside chores. I recall an interview on national tv with one of the wives who was asked how a wife gets to go to bed with the husband that night, and she said the wives draw straws.

I think I see why players want to go to BYU. For one thing, it’s nice and cool to cold there in Utah. Look at how popular Boise State is now. And scenic in the snow. For another thing, the BYU players get educated and then maybe take off to Canada to out in the sticks and have their polygamous lifestyle where it might be legal. They just want a college level education to help them make it in life, maybe meet some coeds and marry all of them in Canada, take them up there as a commune at least, and instruct them to keep quiet about marriage, telling anybody who talks to them that they are only in a commune of people of the same religion.

Y’all talking about why kids go to BYU & other schools in Utah is kinda amusing. No one has mentioned this as yet, so I will. There are reasons not to go too. Y’all remember a couple of years ago or so the round ball player at BYU that was expelled for having “relations” with his GF (a girl anyway). In the reports I saw in the news, the kids sign/take a pledge that they will abstain from having “relations” while they are attending college there. BIG disadvantage to recruiting if you ask me, Selah.

One other one that is worse then that is BYU’s all time leading rusher going into his senior season Harvey Unga was dismissed from school for the same reason PRIOR to his senior season….never stepped foot on the field again. Its a strict code my Dad went there….hence my tie to them
