Game-plan advantages for Tech vs. B.C.
From a game-planning perspective, Boston College is in something of a pickle.
On Oct. 6, the Eagles played Army, whose offense is similar to Georgia Tech’s. Such a game often clues in Tech coaches as to how their opponent will try to defend the Yellow Jackets’ option-based spread. Eagles coach Frank Spaziani noted that it does help his team by increasing familiarity with the atypical offense.
“There’s a couple layers, the yin and yang to that,” Spaziani said.
Further, with Charles Kelly taking over as Tech interim defensive coordinator in place of the fired Al Groh, the Boston College offense isn’t entirely confident of what it will see from the Tech defense.
“It’s a little bit of professional guesswork,” Spaziani said. “I wouldn’t imagine them changing too much. There’s going to be some subtle differences we’re going to have to be prepared to adjust to.”
Speaking on the ACC coaches teleconference, Spaziani drew a lofty comparison with Tech coach Paul Johnson and his offense when asked to compare it to Army’s.
“You have to remember, Paul is the (James) Naismith of that offense, if you will,” he said. “He invented it. He knows it better than most people know their defense.”
Army beat Boston College 34-31 to break an eight-game losing streak and rushed for 516 yards. Johnson dismissed the importance of knowing how an opponent will play the offense.
“We usually have an idea of what they’re going to do anyway,” he said. “I don’t know that it matters.”
2. Tech’s backup defensive linemen should see more playing time, Johnson said, naming Shawn Green, Euclid Cummings, Adam Gotsis and Anthony Williams. He also added inside linebacker Anthony Harrell. One difference between Johnson and Groh was the latter’s preference to stick with starters. Johnson said that the substitutions wouldn’t be made rote, but by game situations.
“If you’re playing 30 snaps in a half, maybe not so much,” he said. “If you’re playing 50 snaps, you’ve got to rotate ’em and try to steal a few snaps here and there.”
Said Kelly, “Anthony Harrell, he can really fly around and (is) very physical.”
Outside linebackers Chris Crenshaw, Malcolm Munroe, Nick Menocal and Tyler Marcodes all could see time in place of starters Jeremiah Attaochu and Brandon Watts. Typically, Attaochu and Watts rarely left the field when Groh was the coordinator.
Said outside linebackers coach Joe Speed, “We’ll get a fresher product going into the fourth quarter.”
3. As inter-divisional opponents, Tech is playing Boston College for the first time since 2008. Once the ACC expands to 14 teams next season with the addition of Pittsburgh and Syracuse, the new scheduling format will make the matchups between Coastal and Atlantic teams even less frequent, the primary crossover partners aside. The plan in place would match Tech and Atlantic opponents such as Florida State twice every 12 years.
Johnson’s preference would be to do away with the primary partners, including the Tech-Clemson series. His condition would be to find a way for rivalries such as North Carolina-N.C. State and Miami-FSU, which both are played annually as crossover games, to continue.
“Truthfully, Georgia Tech-Clemson, that’s a good game, that’s a close game,” he said. “It’s not the same rivalry as Georgia Tech-Georgia or North Carolina-North Carolina State or Florida State-Miami probably, although it’s turned into one because we play each other every year, but historically, it probably wasn’t the same.”
4. Center Jay Finch wore a gold jersey in Wednesday’s practice, meaning he was held out of heavy-contact drills. Johnson said a determination on his playing status will be made Thursday or Friday. If he can’t play, Catlin Alford and Nick McRae will go in his place, Johnson said. Finch came out of the Oct. 6 Clemson game with a calf injury.
Johnson also said that B-back Broderick Snoddy was held out, but expected him to be able to play.

A couple answers for questions from the last post.
Go Trojans – Broderick Snoddy is doing better in practice, but he’s behind Zach Laskey and David Sims. Typically, the B-back spot is a one- or two-player position. He might get spot snaps or blowout duty, but my guess is that’d be it for the time being.

actually, here’s what i was getting after. if the B-backs aren’t producing, it’s easy to conclude the B-backs aren’t doing their job, when in actuality it could also be the line.

chas_jacket – forgot yours. frankly, i think johnson wants to get to a bowl game because he wants to win and keep his job, not specifically to get any particular players more experience. it’s a byproduct, certainly, but not the end goal.
i know some fans have given up on the season, but i don’t think players or coaches have, and that’s why it’s hard for me to see the staff deciding to “play for next year.” a coach who does it is giving up on the team’s seniors, which strikes me as a pretty dangerous tactic for chemistry, recruiting and other reasons. once a team is out of bowl contention, it might make more sense.

In the pros you can “give up on the year” (especially in b’ball if you see Michael Jordan or Patrick Ewing are coming out) but I find the idea in college of “playing the youngsters and preparing for next year” abhorrent. College kids only have 4 years. There is no “next year” for the seniors. You play the people who are the best at their position now.
Gurley and Marshall aren’t playing for UGA because they will be better next year. They are playing because they are the best right now. Same with Tevin.

I said before the season that I felt we had seen enough of what TW brought to the field to determine that we would finish this season with about the same record this year with Lee or Washington, and that next year’s record would be affected the most by which one started this year. This still remains the situation.
I like Tevin, but speaking for myself, I would be much more excited to make the trek down to the Flats to watch Mr Lee.
Looking forward to seeing Harrell and Menacol. They bring a lot of energy to the field and Lord knows we need that this year.

I am nervous on how tech’s “D” is going to perform. While, “no show” is no longer there, the damage is done. It’s a lot to ask the players to be able to fix things up in a week.

Thanks Ken, like many others I am excited about Vad. I personally think we may be a better team by the UGA game if Vad started the rest of the year, but also believe we may have less chance at a bowl. TW has some definite downsides, but our offensive turnover rate is pretty low and that outweighs a lot of negatives. Still think we will see a lot more of Vad the remainder of the year.
optimstic on the defense, think we will see some lapses but will get more pressure on the QB. A solid hit on the qb by Watts or Harrell can make for a nervous qb the rest of the game.

…last time I looked incumbents Richard Samuel, Brandon Harton and Ken Malcome were all still on the UGA roster – Gurley and Marshall get to play because they competed with the incumbents and proved themselves as better options for the the Dawgs at RB, something the RS freshman QB failed to do at GT…

Good stuff Ken. I hope I’m not fooled, but I believe these changes in the defensive approach are really going to help our defensive guys perform. If I was a back-up D player, the news that I am going to finally get some PT would have me fired up. And one thing that was pointed out in one of your earlier pieces this week, I had no idea CAG was making whole sale substitutions on 3rd down. For the life of me I couldn’t figure out how we could hold the opposing O on 1st & 2nd down, then give up first down on 3rd and long. Myabe the substitution thing explains part of that.

I am really looking forward to seeing our new defense against BC. We have a lot of very good athletes. Let them play and go after the ball. More blitzing would be exciting and probably beneficial. (I do think we got blitz happy with Coach Tenuta and ended up giving up more than we gained with the blitz.) More substitutions in the first three quarters will probably help our fourth quarter let downs. After what the team has gone through in the first six games, getting bowl eligible, going to a bowl game and winning would be a huge boost for our seniors and for next year. Go Tech! THWG!

It is a really good idea to have fresh legs in the game on every play. When a starter gets leg weary, the guy playing behind him will do a better job. Dodd required his starters to signal when they needed to take a break – its a team game.

Ken, regarding b-back production:
True, it’s easy to blame b-backs for low production.
It’s also easy to blame the OL (which is the most experience OL in the CPJ era).
But no one ever mentions the fact that our QB is a non-factor running or passing, which makes b-back’s job very difficult. Defense key on the b-back now more than ever. Because of our QB.

GT JOe..Your last comment lets me know that you have no clue about football..the last game we lost the QB ran for 104 yds and 2 tds then threw for 144 yds a td and completed 64% of his passes..Josh Nesbitt didn’t have a single game in his career where he ran for over 100 yds, passed over 100 yds and comleted 64 % of his passes in the same game..so who has played QB that is a bigger factor running and passing??? Nesbitt had a starting pro at b-back and a starting pro at WR and still couldn’t put up thise numbers..for everyone that claims Washingotn calls his number too much..he rush only 3 times more a game than Nesbitt did and has a better rushing avg than Nesbitt..TW completed more passes and threw for more yards than Nesbitt does per game..he threw less int’s have when you compare the 2 guys stats from soph year thru SR year..you are just talking off the top of your head..you have no facts to back what you are saying

I agree with GT TN, TW is doing fine in all quantifiable measurements. Except maybe W’s, and really that is not all his fault. Everyone asked for better passing this year, and he delivered on that. When was the last time we had a QB that passed over 60%, or even 50%. Everyone that is grousing here is talking about subjective measurements like “Explosiveness” and ‘”failures in big games.”
The QB is the easy target to blame when a team is struggling. Particularly for an uneducated fan that only zeros in on who has the ball, and can’t see things like missed blocking assignments or players missing routes.

Not sure about all the substitutions on D. The last time Attaochu and Watts were out for the game was MTSU and we all know how that worked out. Lot of missed tackles, bad angles etc. Lets hope practice and focus has cleared this up.

My hope is to see that everyone here finally realizes that PJ really has no clue. Poor example with Maurice Jones-Drew and Blaine Gabbert. Gabbert was the worst QB in the NFL last year and MJD won the rushing title. MJD’s struggles may be attributed to missing training camp in a contract dispute.

I don’t know that I really care to participate in a blog where phonies can show up one day and start out posting, at least IMHO, being personally offensive in their blog behavior to myself & others as well. @TechApp..the defense has put the offense in a lot worst positions that the offense put defense..D is getting no turn overs and making offense go length of the field..scoring avg also include special teams and defensive tds..neither of them produce anything for Tech..special teams put offense in a bad spot as well..easy for GT Joe to say he cant support this product..that shows he isn’t a real fan..easy for you him to sit home and complain instead of going to support the team he supposely roots for..find it hard to believe he ever cheered for Tech..

you’re offense is scoring because it’s getting so many possessions because the defense is allowing quick scores. but the offense sputters or tevin turns the ball over way too much. both sides of the ball are terible this year. the running game is a joke.

@GT TN…agree the D is (hope it “was”) less superior than the O but not the complete problem.
Based on averages, TW is…average. Average is + and -. Same as the points scored is average. Don’t your remember? You mix the low and the high and that produces an average.So if in one game the points are really high…no problem. But in games that the points are low, the O should take their share of grief for not winnng the game. For the D, in games with low points allowed, the O can play worry free…based on average. But if the D stumbles and allows more than the average points, the O might have to score “more than average”.
The reply of course will be the D always allows more than necessary Hopefully no longer.

Super Size – You have way too much time on your hands. Maybe you should get a job at Costco, Wallmart or CVS. This coach and team and other peoples opinion shouldn’t cause you to get so excited. Truth is, this team is going no where. A record of 7 – 5 at best. The firing of Groh will not make up for a lack of talent and the current head coach who happens to be 4 – 9 over the last 13 games. It’s not going to get any better with CPJ.

GT Joe- Although I lived and taught in Macon from 1995-2004 MaconGTFan and i are not the same. If Ken so chooses he can attest to this. Also, your assertion that I haven’t been around these boards is false. Granted, I don’t post here nearly as much as some, but post here I do.

37 points per game? Let’s be serious:
1. Take out the FCS team (Presby) and our average is 33.6. Which gets us ranked #35 in the country. Trying to be a top 20 team? Fat chance.
2. Take out a horrific UVA team (and we know they are horrific because we destroyed them and we are 2-4), and our average is 28/game, which gets us ranked 56th. Not good.
3. Our 2nd half scoring is #66 in the country.
4. And all of these paltry offensive rankings are against the #83 schedule in the country. NUMBER 83.
