Some extra stuff that didn’t make the notes posted Tuesday night…
1. A few answers in full from quarterbacks and B-backs coach Brian Bohannon about backup quarterback Vad Lee:
“I think he’s working through it. I think he had probably the best day he’s had in a while today. He had a really good practice today. Other than that, I think he’s got to come out every day and try to win the job. We talked about it today and I think he came out and had a really good practice today. Last week, it wasn’t bad, it wasn’t good. It was just O.K.”
“He’s a redshirt freshman. He’s getting a lot better. He had a really good day today and I foresee him right now, he’s going to do nothing but have arrows up from here on out.”
On Justin Thomas’ progress (Thomas worked with the second team last week, with Lee working with the first string to give starter Tevin Washington a break):
“He’s still learning but he’s quick and he’s fast. He can make some plays even when things don’t go like they should. Pretty smart. Picks up on things pretty quick, so I thought it was good for him to get some work in. It’s hard to simulate just going through drills. And he still goes through all my drills. I was pleased that he could get some work in.”
2. I’m working on a story for Thursday’s paper about the offensive line and its performance thus far. The offense as a whole has produced, although the B-back numbers are again down, which is typically either a function of either the backs or the line. Offensive line coach Mike Sewak was more focused on handling defensive line stunts and blitzes. He said he has been disappointed by the line’s play when Tech has been forced into obvious passing situations.
“I thought we’d be better at it,” he said. “We have not. We have not achieved that.”
The stunts and blitzes were a focus during the bye week and also in Tuesday’s practice. Also, Sewak said that center Jay Finch has been inconsistent and that the move of Will Jackson from guard to tackle has been an upgrade.
“There’s always room for improvement, but he’s done some really good things at times, and other times, he’s done some ‘What the heck?’” Sewak said of Finch.
