Charles Kelly focusing in on task at hand

Charles Kelly thought he was recruiting. In fact, he was interviewing for his job.

In the weeks after Paul Johnson was hired to replace Chan Gailey as coach of Georgia Tech in Dec. 2007, Gailey’s assistants stayed on to coach in the bowl game. Their futures at Tech were, at best, uncertain. In some cases, their commitment to keep recruiting reflected that.

Kelly, then Tech’s special-teams coordinator, kept up with phone calls and accompanied Johnson on home visits. After one visit, Johnson told Kelly that he wanted to be up front with him that he wasn’t necessarily going to be retained.

“And I will never forget,” Johnson said. “He told me, he said, ‘My dad taught me a long time ago, if you’re taking a man’s money, then you should work. I’m still taking their money, so I should work.’”

Kelly’s actions and response helped secure himself a spot on Johnson’s staff. Through his continued work, he has earned an opportunity to make the best of a bad situation and perhaps advance his career. For the remainder of the season, Kelly will serve as Tech’s interim defensive coordinator in the place of Al Groh, fired Monday.

“I’m going to do the job as hard as I can,” said Kelly, who grew up in Ozark, Ala., the son of a high school football coach.

Kelly, who comes across as earnest and team-oriented, assumes leadership of a listing ship. Tech has lost its past three games and given up 42, 49 and 47 points, becoming the first Tech team ever to allow 40 or more points in three consecutive games. Out of 120 FBS teams, the Yellow Jackets are ranked 89th in the country in scoring defense (30.2 points per game), 90th in total defense (431.0 yards per game) and 103rd in defensive third-down conversion percentage (47.8 percent).

His answer is to reduce the scheme, put players in position to succeed and practice with energy.

“The biggest thing we’ve tried to instill is, Hey, listen: What you do on Saturday are the habits that you develop during the week,” Kelly said.

The Jackets also figure to tweak the 3-4 scheme to a style more suited to the players’ s strengths and use more players than Groh had. Coaches also plan to run more full-speed drills to sharpen players’ tackling, a weak spot. Kelly, who has been a defensive coordinator at the FCS level at Nicholls State and Jacksonville State, will rely on the input of fellow defensive assistants Andy McCollum, Joe Speed and David Walkosky, the special-teams coordinator who is taking on the defensive line.

“He’s got us involved and we’re committed to him,” Walkosky said. “It’s really a ‘we’ thing.”

Kelly, 45, has made the work ethic he learned from his father Lavon and from Auburn coaching great Pat Dye, whom Kelly played for as a walk-on, a point of emphasis with his players.

“He made me a better player by never letting me get comfortable, always pushing me to do better,” former safety Rashaad Reid said.

Mario Butler, who played cornerback for Kelly and is on the Dallas Cowboys practice squad, said that besides insufficient effort, mental mistakes also drive Kelly up a wall.

“It wasn’t really nice, I can say that,” said Butler, asked how Kelly reacted to mental errors.

An intolerance for not executing assignments properly – and better yet, a method for avoiding them altogether – would do the Jackets well. Under Groh, players repeatedly lined up out of position and were unable to run the defense correctly. In last Saturday’s 47-31 loss to Clemson, Groh’s last, Johnson said he thought there were 47 missed assignments. Under Kelly’s direction, Tech will simplify its scheme to keep players from being slowed by having to think through their assignments.

Kelly’s players swear by him, not only for his coaching ability but for how he has developed relationships with them away from the game.

“I think he’ll do a great job,” Butler said. “I think the guys are going to respond well and play hard for him.”

Kelly will have the opportunity to win the full-time job, though, once again, there are no guarantees. And, like the last time, the only angle Kelly is playing is the one his father taught him.

“Honestly, what I’ve tried to do is focus on Georgia Tech and those players,” he said. “I think if you work and do your job, do everything you can, work as hard as you can, I can live with the results.”

(I think this should conclude Charles Kelly week.)

The good news here is that it is tough to do any worse than the last three games. GT’s defense has allowed the opponent to score points on nearly 75% of its drives and TDs nearly 60% of the time in the last three games. It would be difficult to be worse than that. I believe there is some talent on this team… unfortunately one entire position group seems to lack that talent, D-line. I really thought Izaan Cross would step up this year, but so far I haven’t seen that. The secondary has made some plays and those LBs have shown flashes, but overall the effort has been inconsistent. I’m hoping that playing more players will help, especialy late in the game.

Ken does do a great job. I wish we had him on the College Recruiting Blog too. Look at Carvell’s last dozen posts. We hardly ever hear who is visiting or what coaches and players think of GT, other than a sentence or two. While we are recruiting just as well, maybe slightly better, under PJ as under CG on average, I’d like to know what is keeping the local 4-star, and occasional 5-star, players from coming. Our classes are mostly loaded with 3-star players, which is good, but I’d love to see more playmakers on the field.

I can understand some objections to the spread option offense, but look at how many schools run the read option. Unless you’re Cam Newton or Tim Tebow, you’re not running that in the NFL. USCe just passed 10 times in their game with UGA. For Olineman, yes, GT cut blocks, but so do NFL teams with a zone blocking offense. (Of course we do have 2-3 big commmits there.) Big WRs can flourish in this offense and make it to the NFL. Dual-threat QBs, like Justin Thomas, should love this offense.

Then there is the defense. There is no reason we should not be able to recruit top local players there. Over a third of the NFL runs the 3-4.

I do think that Tech’s academics limit the pool of available players. Just look at some of the top SE players who have GT on their list of schools with offers from dozens of schools but us. But why do we miss out on the ones going to Vandy, Stanford and ND?

NFL aspirations? While the SEC may be on top, the ACC is still typically third or fourth on draft day. Plus, the ACC has had more Pro Bowl players the last three seasons by a wide margin.

Stadium size? It’s larger than Oregon’s, Stanford’s, Vandy’s and TCU’s, among others.

I’d like to hear it directly from coaches and players.

Living in Raleigh NC I have seen Vad Lee destroy some HS offenses. It may not translate to the ACC, but I’m a believer. I want to see him start, of course only after TW has no more illegibility. Lee has mobility, an arm and instinct. Ultimately, my hope for Tech is that the program is noted for recruiting premier RBs. Similarly, to when Cremins recruited premier PGs.

As I have said groh should let the players go at it so they can be seen on tv making crushing tackles or scoring defensive touchdowns.

He would not let them go so we had to let him go.

Recruiting will be easier to an aggressive defense than to a read react defense.

I am not sure about the practice squad differences. With read and react the slower weaker practice squad guy is engaged by the faster stronger first team defender who then easily holds him off until he breaks down on the play. Without good coaching this results in sloppy play when on Saturday we find the first team opponent shows up.
With aggressive defense schemes -especially blitzes it maybe easier for coaches to see if we are not hiding or blitzing the proper running lanes….?. I remember undr bud Carson . The lb coach was jerry Glanville. He came in and really shook up the gentleman tackling. Went nuts in practices. The cub bard was bare and he did what he could and it was fun to watch.
Great to say it with gusto. To hell with ga ( except for the cool ga guys that are on our blog)

Next question is what academic adjustments and course offerings are needed. …?….

Would love to see our team tackling runners around the knees and below. Watching a couple of games last week, when really good runners are hit high, they tend to gain another 4 to 5 yards. When hit around the ankles they seem to drop right there. Also many times when hitting high, they bounce off, taking a runners legs out from under him is a good way to stop him in his tracks.

Any thoughts on this?

Much has been made of Tech’s defensive line not being able to penetrate and make tackles for loss and QB sacks. Since Tech is now switching to the more “aggressive” 1-gap from the 2-gap 3-4, it is useful to look at how Georgia’s 1-gap defense is faring in the 3rd season of that defense. Here are the stats for tackles for loss and sacks for the defensive linemen this season.

Starters
Tackles for loss
John Jenkins 1.0, 2 yards
Abry Jones 1.0, 1 yard
Cornelius Washington 3.0, 5 yards

Sacks
John Jenkins 0
Abry Jones 0
Cornelius Washington 0.5

Kwame Geathers 2.0, 4 yards

This will prevent name thievery and the ensuing defamation of character, when they make posts which the actual “owner” of that name would never make. Incidentally, I consider you to be defaming my character when you use a name like the one you use. Handling a situation like that is neither censorship nor fascism. By the way, I agree completely with your assessment of Obama, and I guess that’s why I object so much to having my name associated with him. Actually, by doing what you do, you fall more in line with their ways than I do, because you (at least implicitly) lie out your azz and expect everybody to believe you.

I’m almost glad we lost to u in 2009 and 2010 as that has Uga stuck with Richt and his being always outcoached by the hated Spurrier.
BTW, I went to Florida for a year so I can claim them as a college to pull for with more credentials than half your fans who have never sniffed a classroom in Athens.
Spurrier, Saban and Miles = elite coaches.
Richt = mediocre and 90% of your fans know it.

Think where the Dawgs program would be if they hired someone like Spurrier or Saban instead of Goff, Donnan and Richt.
The same knock applies to us.
It starts with the head coach and how good he is at picking coordinators.
CPJ gets more time to right the ship (Ken borrowed my metaphor – imatation is the highest form of flaterry) but hiring Groh was a huge mistake.
I’ll admit a bias against coaches, already multi-millionaires, who hold their past employer to full payment of a contract they routinely tear up when they want to leave.
That bias, had CPJ had it, would have meant a no to Groh.
Should not have been allowed to attend practices either in 2009 after bring fired by Virginia.

He doesn’t.
He would not be so smooth in all his commercials were he to know that 75% of his fanbase (dawg fan estimate) think he is a lousy coach. (might be closer to 95%)
He wants to deliver the product on those commercials he gets paid for but doesn’t seem to mind shortchanging dawg fans year after year.

Supersize, quit being vague on the “something smells fishy” Fred Holton injury.

Here we are, 6 games played, now the bye week so week 7, and I think FH has already been ruled out for week 8???

We fans were led to believe he MIGHT play vs. Va Tech!? Now, 2 MONTHS later he’s still listed with an “undisclosed” injury? Is this some kind of mental (a.k.a. academic) injury?

That’s what me is startin to believe. B/c a physical injury, which many thought was going to be healed in week 1, would surely have healed by now……

I accidently clicked on an interview with Roddy prior to the 2009 season.
In the comments, Misterwax wanted fewer turnovers and no going for it on fourth from our side of the field.
He wanted CPJ to consider field position like most good coaches do.
To no avail.
Groh was a disaster but how would the year be different if CPJ punted the time vs VT we went for it on 4th and failed early in the game?
If memory serves, we have done that in the three biggest games; VT, Miami and Clemson.
And failed on all three.
No other coach does that one time much less three.
Blaming the defense is not a good excuse because this is his longtime philosophy.
The better coaches play field position from their side of the field
It just is not the smart play.
The other side can gamble too knowing if they get a stop, they’ll have great field position.
Then against Miami when he really should go for it on 4th with 2 minutes left, he chokes and calls for the punt.
That was the better gamble.
And not from your 37 vs Clemson.

This year would have been a good year for CPJ to listen – not to me – but a Misterwax comment after May 2009 interview with Roddy.
Stop going for it from our side of the field on 4th.
Give your defense a chance for a change.
But in the 4th qt, do go for it on their side of the field. (Miami w 2 minutes to go)
Against Duke in 2010, I think we also went for it and failed.
Those 4th downs puts a lot of pressure on your QB.

Interesting comment. So we recruiting well 10 years ago huh? Let’s see, that waas 2002, and our class was ranked 50th in the country. Ok keep going back. In 2001, our class was ranked about 50th in the country. In 1999 and 2000, we had pretty decent classes, both ranked just inside the top 25. Before that? You can’t find a class ranked in the top 30. Since Dodd left nearly 50 years ago, GT has not been able to recruit top tier talent. I don’t see this changing. Yes, we can recruit a little better. But it won’t move the needle. It’s a proven fact…. If you have a winning program that players want to play in, you get the top tier recruits. Groh totally destroyed the defensive side of our program. Hopefully, CCH can turn that around. If he can get the players to play gap defense, we will be much better. No… we don’t have the 4 and 5 star players like UGA and Alabama do… But, we are much better than what our numbers currently show. Groh was a clueless wonder. His coaching method was nothing short of using a ouija board and sacrificing chickens on the sideline to pick which play to run. Our players deserve better. CCH has got a challenge ahead of him. But, from I know of him… He is a winner. He will adapt and overcome. Until I see different, I will give him my full support.

First of all, your question is a fallacy. Coaches will be judged on their actual record, not their percieved record. GT still has the opportunity to go 9-4, so that’s what I believe will happen, until proven otherwise.

However, I’ll answer your question anyway. If CPJ goes 7-6 or worse, 2013 becomes a CPJ’s hot seat year. If we don’t get to 5 wins this year, I think Drad should take a long hard look at the program and make sure he believes in what CPJ is even before next season.

Maybe we don’t get Tuitt, but we should not WHIFF on all those Academic Qualifiers from the Metro Atl Area.

Shouldn’t some of those guys grow up loving GT FB, shouldn’t CPJ be able to close on some of those guys?

I didn’t mention Jordan Jenkins at UGA that had planned on majoring in some so of engr. in UGA’s new engr School and Josh Dawson (?) that they stole from Vandy right before NSD.

Those 2 Tr- Fr. OLBs reported to UGA at 6-4 250lbs & 6-3 259lbs. and they are both listed at 2nd team and have played meaningful snaps and BOTH were Academic Qualifiers for GT.

Just because CPJ is a terrible Recruiter does not mean that our Academics is the problem.

After 2 years the CPJ BLTs were claiming we’ll play for MNCs by year 5, now yr. 5 is here with CPJ’s horrible Recruits and now they are saying that CPJ is the best that we can ever hope for and 8-4 seasons vs. weak schedules is good enough.

NONE of my detractors were saying that 8-4 vs. weak schedules is good enough 3 yrs ago, now that is all they can hope for.

Lots of CPJ fans are too cowardly to eat crow and admit they were wrong about CPJ!

It hurts too much to admit that Ol’ WnE was right about CPJ way back in Dec. 2007.

BTW, not all these comments are directed at you.

The D over the past couple of years has been bad on 3rd/4th downs more than it has been good. There have been plenty of drives where the D played very good on 1st & 2nd down, only to give up a 1st down on either 3rd or 4th down.

WnE … please explain how these horrible recruits of PJ’s can play good on 1st & 2nd down so many times then, come 3rd & 4th down, they become crappy, DII recruits?

GT’s 3rd down D (nice that both 3 game spans each had 46 opps):

1st 3 games — 13 out of 46
next 3 games — 31 out of 46 (Clemson alone had as many 3rd down convs as GT’s 1st 3 opps)

I think I see the big problem between these two 3-game spans…..
