Clemson's Andre Ellington (23) tries to get by Georgia Tech's Jeremiah Attaochu.

Updated, 10:10 p.m.

CLEMSON, S.C. – As late-afternoon shadows crept across Memorial Stadium, the Clemson faithful stood in full-throated roar. The sellout crowd sensed its team about to deliver a knockout punch to Georgia Tech.

The Yellow Jackets complied. Another fourth-quarter breakdown torched three quarters of effort and offensive play-making in a 47-31 defeat to No. 15 Clemson Saturday in Death Valley. A week after absorbing one of the worst losses in school history,  Tech made good on its vow to give a better account of itself against the Tigers. It did, but up against an arsenal of offensive weapons and its own self-destructive habits, it wasn’t enough.

“Right now, we’ve got to play close to perfect,” coach Paul Johnson said. “Clearly, we’ve got to score more points.”

The Jackets fell to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the ACC and made the bus ride home down I-85 with regrets of plays missed and chances squandered packed underneath. They also are owners of their second three-game losing streak in the past three seasons.

Twelve months after opening the season 6-0 for the first time since 1966 and rising to No. 12 in the polls, the 2012 Jackets have scuffled their way to a less glorious piece of history. Tech goes into its bye week with its worst record after six games since the 1994 team, which started the season 1-5 and later brought about the late-season dismissal of coach Bill Lewis.

“We’ll come back,” Johnson said. “They played hard for the most part, and if they’ll play hard, we’ve got to find a way to try to help them win.”

As was the case against Virginia Tech and Miami, the Jackets held a fourth-quarter lead Saturday, this time in a game that few gave them any chance to win after their 21-point home loss to Middle Tennessee State last Saturday. The Tech offense at times scalded Clemson’s poor tackling defense. Quarterback Tevin Washington operated the option effectively, freeing up A-backs Orwin Smith and Robbie Godhigh to gain 178 rushing yards on just 11 carries. He completed nine of 14 passes for 144 yards.

Said Smith, “I saw guys with more drive than previous weeks.”

Tech’s  work led to kicker David Scully’s 26-yard field goal that gave the Jackets a 31-30 lead with 13:03 left in the game, the fourth time they had wrested the lead from Clemson. The Tigers responded with a 75-yard touchdown drive, one of their six scoring drives measuring 70 yards or more, completing it with a 35-yard pass to wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. A two-point conversion gave Clemson a 38-31 lead.

A team that is becoming painfully familiar with an inability to rise to the game’s biggest moments tripped again, this time literally.

Chris Milton misplayed the ensuing kickoff, fumbling the ball before recovering it and then slipping to the ground at the 2-yard line. Two plays later, Washington pitched to Smith, who was overrun by Clemson defenders and dropped for a safety for a 40-31 lead. The stadium shook in approval.

The episode recalled Smith’s own safety on a kickoff against Miami.

“You can play 10 years of football and never take a kickoff return on the 1-yard line and have a safety on a kickoff return,” Johnson said. “We’ve had both. It seems like it shouldn’t happen.”

On the series after the safety, the Tech defense, which allowed 601 yards to Clemson, gave a spark when inside linebacker Daniel Drummond intercepted a Tajh Boyd pass, returning the ball to the Jackets at the Tech 45-yard line. Down nine and needing two scores, Tech drove and then sent Scully out for a 37-yard field goal. His try was blocked, his second miss of the game.

“That was pretty much it,” Johnson said.

It brought an end to an afternoon that held the hope for a season-turning upset but was done in with a mound of errors. Tech tried for a first down on 4th-and-1 from its own 37 on its first possession of the game and was denied on a sneak by Washington.

Nose tackle Shawn Green made one of the plays of the game in the third quarter, intercepting a screen pass and returning it 17 yards to the Clemson 26, but Tech squandered the opportunity to add to its 28-27 lead. A botched snap between center Catlin Alford and Washington on 4th-and-1 from the 7 gave the ball back to the Tigers.

Occasionally better defensive play and pass-rush pressure often placed Clemson in 3rd-and-long situations. As has become rote, though, the Jackets allowed Clemson to convert 13 of 19 third downs. Tech has given up 31 of 46 third downs in the past three games.

The first-quarter fourth-down try in its own end spoke more about the state of Tech’s defense than Johnson would.

“I thought we could make it,” Johnson said.

Once again, opportunity lost.

and CPJ gets paid more than Dabo, Jimbo, and every other coach in the ACC. His salary (~$2.6 million) is in the top 10% of college football coaches.
Is it too much to ask to get what we pay for?

ah, gt1012 you got me… 3rd down defense cost us this one period. And poor special teams didn’t help. Offense was ok, nothing spectacular, but we scored exactly as many as we did last year, just that this time our D collapsed.

Wasn’t as bad as I feared….. But we are just not anywhere near where we need to be. Offense, although pretty good, can’t make the big plays and the play calling today was….interesting. Defense – not as bad as last week, but Clemson didn’t even punt!!!!!!! And special teams – I was excited to see a ST coach come in but have not really seen much improvement.

I hate to be so negative, but we only have one or two more games where I think we even have a chance.

SUB

RECRUITING

Over the course of a game that has probably 100+ snaps, INFERIOR RECRUITING will ruin your chances to win more often than not!

But then again, I said the same thing way back in Dec. 2007 when CPJ was hired with no experience on the BCS Level.

Al Groh will continue to cash his checks but he needs to look into the mirror and ask why? I guess he can say he is doing his best which is pretty damning. I have heard AG speak on several occasions and he always seems to be trying to impress the audience with how much he knows and how clever he is rather than speaking to issues or challenges with the team. I guess one way to put it is he seems to be oddly detached from what is going on. He has a scheme and it worked eight years ago in the pros and thus he is worth what he is paid. I think, at this point if the Peter Principle is not altogether appropriate parts of it surely are. He has reached not so much a level of incompetence as a place of ineptitude. He should not be coaching defense at the college level. High School or Pro? Your choice.

Just FYI to all the critics. Clemson’s stadium is a very tough place to play. It is very loud. I went over there that night they beat us 31-7 on ESPN Gameday. I can’t really fault the team for a loss over there.

1 4 GT

October 6th, 2012

What makes all of this so hard to stomach is that with a break here & there, GT could be 6 & 0. All teams that are highly ranked have to have some breaks go their way. This is not to say GT has a roster full of studs, but there are some ball players on the team. This team has not had any good luck. Or not enough anyway. But the defense is lacking. The offense is good enough to compete with most any team. If we had a defense that was just comparable to the offense, GT would be pretty good. Unfortunately, there are just not enough semi studs on defense. If AG goes, please Lord, maybe they’ll go back to a 4-3 D that does not require as many studly players. I can hope.

Team certainly played with more passion tonight, but still outmanned. Saw several coaching miscues, but not sure they would have changed the outcome. We’re just….not….that….good.

Ah well, as a GT fan for 30 years, I’ve seen this before. I hate giving up on a season, but it seems clear it is time with the bye to start Vad. We have no playmakers on defense, so we have to try outscoring everyone. While it could lead to disaster, VL also would seem to have the better chance to make some of the BIG solo plays that might let us steal a win here and there.

Hope CPJ is willing to make some changes.

GT defense has given up over 600 yards in each of last three games. That’s over a mile of offense! This without question is the worst defense I can remember Georgia Tech puttimg on the field. Even in their 1-10 season they didn’t give up this kind of yardage on such a consistent basis. Their special teams are pathetic. I have watched alot of football in my over 60 years and I until this year had never seen a team get a safety on a kickoff then today the return man falls down on the 2 yardline untouched. Has Georgia Tech lowered their entry requirements this much. The old Tech teams at least showed some intelligence. This team is awful. They will probably give up 500 yards next week and thats with no game scheduled.

Just got home from the game and I cannot believe I have paid good money to watch this sorry a– defense. We had Clemson, our offense was scoring, could have scored more but our great head coach CPJ, decided to go for it on 4th and 1 instead of kicking a field goal. What is the problem with getting rid of Big Al before the season is over???? Why can’t you let one of the assistants to take over???? I am not paying anymore money on tickets. I don’t care if Grant Field only has 400 people at the next home game. All I know is that I will not attend anymore games as long as Big Al is there. I will not buy season tickets next year either.

Tech played with alot of heart today, but CPJ has got to quit being so stupid on 4th downs. Know way do you go for it at your own 37. Besides TW again didn’t run the play you called, and you put your D in a hole. TW played half way decent today but Vad needs to get the rest of the snaps reguardless. Thank God we have a real kicker coming in next year. No way could we aford to miss the FG just before half time. And how many times did I. Johnson leave wide open receivers on 3rd and long? Also where was LB Nealy? Drummond looked to slow. All in all a great effort. Just can’t close the deal. The offense with the exception of O. Smith just doesn’t have any play makers with speed. We just need to recruit better. I hope the recruits we have coming in aren’t scared off because they can and will make a difference. Keep the faith and GOOOOOOOO TECH.

I still support coach Paul Johnson and I think he is the right coach for GT.

Clemson no doubt had the superior players on the football feild today and we still had a solid chance to win half way through the 4th quarter. We are really only a few plays away from being 5-1 (maybe even 6-0); however, the reality is we are 2-4 due to a combination of mistakes by both players & coaches.

I trust he will make the correct decisions going forward.

I do agree that it is time to get Vad Lee some extensive playing time; the team needs to see if Vad is ready, determine if he is the QB of the future and also get him some valuable playing time going into next season. I like Tevin Washington as a leader and as a person, but it is time to move on for the future of the program…….he also has hurt the team trying to pad his personal TD numbers.

Great game at the half. Scheme is really irrelevant at this point. We simply do not have any players, certainly guys who can make plays on defense. Our D line really are masquerading as undersized speed bumps in the back of the Walmart. What has happened to Tech pride? This is a train wreck not a ramblin wreck.

This game is a defining moment for CPJ, he does a great job with an offense staffed with the best talent he can get, but he he does not integrate himself into the defense and thus is totally dependent on the coaches he puts in control of that function. It is clear that CPJ, as any chief executive would do, needs to replace the manager in charge of that weak link. Special teams coach shoud be replaced as well. CPJ please act like a “head coach” and make the changes this progarm needs. Stop putting your head in the sand!!!

I wonder if the coaches score themselves? Dumb call on 4th & 1 from own 37. Dumb TO when Clemson had 4th and 1. Hideous clock management in last 3:40 of 1st half—Clemson couldn’t stop us—but we were able to stop ourselves. Special Teams coach gets a failing grade—another boondoogle on a KO–give up blocked FG, did I mention the stupid time out when Clemson had 4th & 1—yeah well it needs to be said twice because of how dumb that was.

I almost think we overcoach—-basics gentlemen basics—the D stays out there and gets ready—-if they rush out the punt team and you can’t get the special teams on the field then you leave the D out there—don’t call a time out! We looked clueless in the two minute drill—-even the game ended with us not even getting the snap off—how fitting.

I hope, I beseech, I beg that going forward we will develop Vad—-yes we can win the rest and still finish 8-4 and most of us would be happy. BC stinks, UNC had a nice win, but they are nothing special—we have BYU and Duke at home (so fans show up) and then there’s UGA and maybe God will show mercy.

We threw the ball 14 times and completed 9 with a QB that does not throw well. Imagine what we can do with a QB with a strong arm. CPJ needs to decide if sticking to his TO is the best way to win games or getting a little more balance to open things up is a better choice.

Pipeline does look good, but coaching does not.

PJ is as loyal to TW as CG was to RB. He will not play VL unless its mop up duty in a game or if TW gets hurt. And TW always calls his own number when they get close to the goal line or 4th & short. TW is no where the talent as Nesbitt was.

I don’t care if we have all 5 stars on the offense, the TO the way PJ imagines it is ineffective when you’re essentially 1-dimensional, coupled with having to play from behind because of the defense.

PJ will last at least one more season because the GTAA cannot afford the $10+ mil to buy out his contract at his point. He is NOT going to resign because of the money owed him – same thing happened with Hewitt. Maybe in a year when the guarantee drops to ~$7 mil and they paid off some more of the debt owed to Hewitt.

Better days are ahead, I just don’t see it with the current staff.

_____________

I respectfully disagree about our “pipeline”.

When we had players out vs. MTSU our back-ups on D looked horrible, they looked worse than D1-AA players.

Lets look at the so-called pipeline:

All the other A-Backs are worse than Orwin Smith

The B-back position is still no threat

QBs are big question mark no matter how much we hype up Vad Lee

OL still can’t pass block and the dive play has not been a threat for 2 full seasons this yr. included

Whatever DLs we have are worse than the horrible DL we have now

Our 2ndary was supposed to a strength, but they have turned out to be the weakest unit on the team TIED with our crappy DL

Our LBs aren’t really spectacular, more like serviceable.

Please inform me what is so great about what we have in the pipeline that would make GT fans feel better about the future?

HEADLINE – Tech loses by few points this week!
Despite giving up over 600 yards of offense, the Jackets out did themselves by losing by a smaller margin this week. “We are making strides in the right direction. Heck last week we gave up 49 points,so there was an improvement this week of two less points scored against us” said defensive coordinator Al Groh. Next up for Tech is Boston College after a bye week. Georgia Tech is sure to set the bar higher and will try to lose by a lot less being that Boston College is also a lousy football team. Tech has accepted an early bowl invitation and will play in the inaugural Toilet Bowl.

Overall, I thought the young men put forth a much better effort this week. While I still like CPJ’s offense, I have to say his game management is atrocious. As many have said, going for it on your own 37 in a scoreless game in 1st quarter was just stupid, and clock management at end of half was just terrible.

I was calling for TWs head after last weeks debacle, but I thought he had a decent game. Not sure if he blew the play on the 1st quarter 4th and 1 play. Not sure why we abandoned the quick outs after the first TD drive, but offense generally did enough to win the game. Can’t blame them for missed field goals, botched kick offs and anemic defense. Regardless, it’s still time to give Vad some snaps and, and start getting him ready for nest year.

Not sure what to do about the D. We just don’t have the playmakers to succeed in the 3-4. D-line generates no pressure at all, and third down D is just non existent.

Not giving up though. Need to regroup during the bye week, and put forth effort down the stretch. All are winnable games, even the Dawgs after what I saw tonight. Keep the faith and THWG.

The outlook for Tech looks pretty bleak for the foreseeable future. Assuming TW stays healthy, he will be the starting QB for the rest of the year with Vad only getting mop up duty. Unfortuantely, the defense isn’t going to just figure things out and automatically get better this year. Our opponents litterally score every time they have the ball. Fast forward to next year, we’ll have an inexperienced QB with marginal d-1 skilled players and average offensive line. So instead of an efficient offense like we have this year, look for an inconsistent, turn-over prone offense (center/qb exchange problems and meshpoint caused fumbles) ,and many missed option reads. While I’d like to thing his talent will over come the steep learning curve ahead, I think the offense actually takes a step back next year and we have a terrible defense next year and an inconsistent offense. Back to marginal d-1 skilled players, I’m sorry but is it just me, but why do we have so many undersized, similar skilled A-backs – godhigh, zenon, snoddy, hill and average b-backs (sims and laskey). I know people love Laskey because he runs hard, plays hard, but he is the eptiome of average. Next year, it will be the same cast of characters on defense so unfortunately it will be more of the same on that side of the ball. Fire coach groh you say. What does that accomplish? A coach can’t get out there get off blocks, tackle and cover. Change from 3-4 to 4-3? The issue is talent, not scheme. I’m a glutton for punishment and will continue to support the team. It just looks pretty bleak. just had to vent…

______________

Both Coordinators were sent packing.

At the NFL level those changes are much more likely to yield positive results than on the college level.

There’s a huge gap in personnel when you’re dealing with folks aged 18-23, than in the Pros, in the NFL all those guys are really good, so scheme means a lot more.

I couldn’t agree more 1 4. I’m tired of calling for Vad already. Maybe with an extra week off coach might smell the coffee and give Vad his chance. If he does, I pray he gives him the entire game to show his mettle. Enough of Tevin already, much as I hate to say anything negative about him. I just feel like he has had more than a fair shake to take this team somewhere but all we’ve done is step backwards. And no it’s not all on him, not even close. Defense is nonexistent and the hc has not a clue in many many situations. But it’s possible for Vad to overcome those two HUGE handicaps. The problem with johnson though is that he’s so stubborn, the more you cry for Vad it seems the more he wants to dig his heels in…just to spite us all. As I said, often the man does not have a clue.

I’m pretty sure CPJ is 55 years old. His stubbornness & arrogance is going to cost him at least 10 more years of 2.5 Million or more per year & a very comfortable retirement. Not to mention the blow to his ego if GT fires him in a year or 2. His next gig will NOT be at a FBS school @ a huge paycut. GT is quite likely the only place where he can run his offense in the FBS division. His choice….change or pack up & leave after 2013 unless there is a big jump in his record from here on out.

OK Ken, you’re such a good guy we’ll give you a (deserved) pass….but we were all looking for you around kickoff! Felt like a fish out of water with the blog down.

How about the end zone option for a safety… just worse than HS offense, unfortunately (really). That plus its setup – the kick-off return debacle (again!), the blocked FG kick, the Q1 4th down miss on our 37, and a defense that didn’t force a single punt all day (including the usual suspect pass coverage), spells implosion and defeat against D-1/D-2/you name it – much less a ranked team.

At least the Jackets had life today, although I didn’t see much sidelines spirit like CPJ called for.
For that matter I didn’t see much on-field hype and chatter either. Just another day at the office.

And our O and TW showed again that we’re a “fair weather” VFR operation, not IFR for when the going gets tough. We can’t compete in the ACC (much less tougher conferences) without the ability to comeback and overcome game adversity. No team can.

Are we still rebuilding this team, or is this it?

I really don’t understand why you want Vad, It’s not Washington, it’s our defensive lay out.AG thinks he’s a rocket scientist with his complicated defence, that would slow any players down, and not let them fly around, for fear of missing an assignment. Don’t blame the offence, we scored enough points against a ranked team in an impossible atmosphere. It’s the special teams and the defence.Who can win a game , that gives up 600 yds?? Don’t blame the recruits, we have some good kids. Johnson should lighten up, and let them have some fun, and ag should go to the moon

I did see more fire today-but too many missed tackles and Tech was always a half step late or slow in making a stop for loss behind the line. Quit belly aching about the offense. _______________

Any threat to CPJ would be an empty threat.

The GTAA cannot afford to pay Hewitt and CPJ to NOT work at GT, CPJ will be owed about $2.6MM for the next 4 years after this season.

Not only can we not fire him after this year, but we probably cannot fire him after next yr. either.

We’ll be lucky to have the money to fire him when he has 2- years remaining, about $5.2MM left for GT to buyout (Chan’s buyout was only $4.0MM total for 4 yrs left).

This means that CPJ will likely sign at LEAST 2 more Recruiting classes and still be the HC when the initial contacts are made for a 3rd additional Recruiting class.

In summary, it will get much worse before it gets better.

Negative Recruiting has hurt GT more than most schools, but now that everyone knows CPJ is basically a lame-duck HC that the school cannot afford to fire, look for upcoming Recruiting classes to get worse even by CPJ-standards.

Next yr. we’ll have a new QB, no Orwin, on Uzzi, 1 new CB, 2 new DLs.

Before you welcome the new Starters, remember that the guys behind the ones leaving, that you might want to criticize on their way out are BETTER than their back-ups now and there is no guarantee that back-ups moving into starting roles next yr. will make them better players.

All this is a result of DRad bringing in a triple-SLOPtion HC with NO BCS recruiting experience and then, upping his contract from $1.6MM to $2.3MM-$2.6MM after just one yr. when no other schools were bidding against GT.

GT was so desperate to beat UGA DRad overreacted to us beating one of the more flawed UGA teams in a long time.

And now we are going to pay for it by suffering for 7-10 seasons AFTER CPJ is finally let go.

We just keep coming up short in critical parts of the game. Coaching, execution… not sure, but it is becoming a repetitive issue in each game. Still don’t have a kicker that we can count on to get it through the uprights or a defense that can make the big stop when needed. This puts even more pressure on the offense to convert on each and every series. I went back and looked at the stats from the game and we averaged more per play than Clemson but these numbers are hollowed without the W to back it up. We are just playing out the season now. I do believe that Groh will be gone after the season. If we don’t make a good hire here PJ will be next, not sure when but he will be in the crosshairs.

What I don’t understand is on some plays it takes Johnson several seconds on the sideline to tell the carrier coming in the game the play. When the carrier gets to the huddle it is already breaking and the play carrier says maybe two words to Washington. Then Washington goes out and calls the wrong play.

Missed field goals, missed plays at the goal line and no time outs at the end of the games because of sorry sideline management, if I remember right because of a defense that couldn’t substitute fast enough or get ready fast enough, poor clock management, this was a winnable game, lost.

And congratulations to pj on his retirement plan!

Along with Paul Hewitts retirement plan and building projects pj is guaranteed to be at gt through 2016, so whats the big rush?

And for a cool $10,000,000 we get this product, his system installed with players that wound up on his team as he does not recruit effectively. Great choice for dc as well. Love the way dc hides from the media. Quite a man, he deserves a raise and lets say $8,000,000 for two more years.

But he choices being made by the athletic department are sound choices. No need to change a thing. Read the last NCAA findings. Admin cost scholarships and ACC Championship. Great way to support the football players. Everything is fine, no problems with his athletic administration.

Talent wins games; systems don’t matter that much in college. Spread options, 3/4 defense, shotgun, pistol, pro set, are all just ways to put good players in the position to make plays. Smallish and slow are ingredients in a recipe of losses. The 3/4 is a pro-style defense and, supposedly, players want to play in systems that lead to opportunities to play on Sunday. Yet, we have no lineman that will make that transition and only a few linebackers and d-backs who may. You can run any system with a few great players on each side of the ball supported by god players around them. Overall, team talent starting its downward move when Giff left. Most head coaches don’t travel and recruit until the deal is ready to close. Recruiting coordinators are the key.

Teams that can pass (BC, Duke, UGA, UNC) are going to continue the light show vs. GT’s pass D. There’s 0-4. And BYU has the best D GT will face this season. That leaves the Turtles as the only “pick’em” game remaining.

YES, the Cougars’ D is better than UGA’s. I’m a former GT season tix holder that moved to Utah 9 months ago…BYU’s D is STOUT! GT scores less than 20 vs. the Cougars, even after BYU plays Oregon St on 10/13, then travels to Notre Dame on 10/20. After playing those 2, GT will be like a prep team to BYU. I’m attending next Saturday’s BYU-Oregon St game to get a second live look at their D (already saw the Cougar’s O lose to Utah). But I already know it’s good! More of a get familiar with the area in anticipation of GT coming to Provo in 2013.

I hope PJ plays Lee more.

Not that I think Lee would be any better than Washington if there are no other changes to go with it. But he at least needs to get more practice running the offense. And also so that you could all see that there’s only so much any ONE player can do. That is unless you all think Lee can throw the ball, block for himself, catch it and run in the TD. … And then line up on defense and make some stops too!

There’s a mountain of things that need to improve.

Further regarding BYU ……….. They are now playing their FRESHMAN QB (Taysom Hill) over the Senior (Riley Nelson). IT’S GLARINGLY OBVIOUS THE FRESHMAN IS BETTER THAN THE SENIOR. The guy can run & throw, and he’s tough.

However, Hill is only starting now (and won’t be losing his job unless he gets injured) b/c Nelson got hurt. Nelson’s healthy now, but it took an injury for the better QB to get a chance to show he’s better. That’s exactly what’s going to have to happen at GT for Vad Lee to become the starter.

That’s really the case with all positions (i.e. Isiah Johnson on D). PJ praised this kid so much when he arrived at GT that he ain’t going anywhere unless he gets injured or suspended, i.e. (again) Daniel Drummond (we all see who GT’s best LB is now – JHD). He only got his opp b/c DD was suspended.

I’m a fan of CPJ and think he has the system that obviously works on offense, when you score as much as we do, offense is not the problem. That being said, it seems like this season he has lost his concept of when we should run certain plays and what type of offense is appropriate in certain situations. We should have run short passes and crossing routes behind the LB’s when we had the ball before halftime, we needed a score right then and wasted a big opportunity. We shouldn’t have wasted the clock with players still running in each individual play, they should have come in with two or three plays and run hurry up, maximizing our potential. To see what we did there was disappointing and seemed to take a bit of wind out of the offense for the rest of the game.
When it’s painfully obvious that with our defense letting our opponent score at will we have to score on every offensive series, we can’t waste opportunities like we did Saturday. Al Groh needs to be fired and CPJ needs to teach this team a two minute drill like every other football team on the planet.

Only 2 games we have left in which we have any possibility of winning – BC and MD, and they are not gimmes. With 4 – 8 as our best possible outcome, why not get Johnson and staff to resign now?

BINGO! Delbert D.

BYU’s D is very good, to say the least. Through 6 games, only 53 pts have been put up against BYU (24 by Utah). Take away a 47yd fumble ret TD by Utah, and on 46 pts have been scored vs. BYU’s D. That’s 29 pts by the other 5 opponents, combined (Wash St, Boise St, Hawaii, Utah St, and Weber St).

GT’s last 3 opponents have tallied 47, 49, and 42 respectively. GT has scored 31, 28, and 36 in those 3 games, and are 0-3. With a BYU-like D, GT would be 6-0.

Defense wins championships!

Jacket Fan … you need to delve a little deeper into BC …….. they can PASS. A positive for GT is that they get the off week to rest/heal & prepare for BC. Unfortunately, Al Groh has NO solution to consistently stop a good passing O.

Vad won’t see the field again this year. CPJ is just too loyal to his senior QB and may as well finish it out with him. It will eventually cost CPJ his job in the end, but he’s remaining loyal to his QB.

By the way, it’s sad when you honestly (and I mean with all of my heart) knew that Clemson could score whenever it wanted to. Our defense is that bad. Clemson’s offense is good but I seriously think Duke will roll up 40+ on Tech. We won’t win another game and I”m not just saying that b/c I’m pissed at this team. I honestly believe our defense can’t compete with anyone in NCAA right now. Our offense will at some point, give up hope and this team will become divided b/c they can’t rely on our D for one freaking series…..put a fork in them boys….

CPJ better watch out or he’ll get fired. I saw 3 calls he made that were like earlier in the season, 2 dive plays after big gains that wasted one out of four plays since they gained no yards, and one trip opt off to the closest sidelines, attempting to tight rope walk it, didn’t work, next was fourth down and punted. If Tech only wins 2 games this year CPJ will get fired probably. At least the all white unis and helmets were there and looked good, but the pink socks are starting to creep back in, maybe why Tech lost. Clemson had more complex offensive formations, but the movements were mainly to the sides, thus harmless.

I think the reason Tech loses is because of Buzz. I am a Tech grad, and I don’t like Buzz at all. I don’t like all Tech clothing and decal merchandise to have Buzz on them and be forced to identify with the Buzz mascot that has an unidentified person inside of the costume. As a male, I would like to know the gender of whoever is Buzz, and the race. Now I did not have any problem with the yj in the 60’s and 70’s when I was at Tech. There was only one mainly, the T-Club one, which the student body also could use in merchandise. That yj is not available at Tech or anywhere now. Nobody at Tech got to vote on if they wanted the Buzz art to take over all yjs at Tech, it was forced on us. No questionaires were mailed out to alums asking what their attitudes were about the proposed Buzz art that was to link up with the costumed mascot at games. Also, now at Tech no alum clothing merchandise is sold at all. So the alums get alienated alot at Tech these days, and what do they watch for football or basketball from Tech? The message they get is that Tech wants them to get lost, they just want their Alum Assn monetary donations. Clemson has Iptay, and they don’t change that tiger paw symbol ever. Tech decided to change its yj to Buzz.

I was at the Clemson game and I have NEVER seen our stadium as packed and electric as Death Valley was. We typically beat Clemson, but that didnt stop there fans from getting behind them being that extra player when they need extra energy! As one person previously implied, “Maybe the new uniforms are unlucky.”

Financially, I think we’re stuck with CPJ until 2016. The unfortunate part of our stupid contracts is that financially speaking, there is more incentive for our coaches to want to be fired than to do well. Who wouldn’t want to be fired, get $10M and then go get another job and get double pay. To all his critics, CPJ is smiling and saying “Fire me please!” Our only hope is that his ego is greater than his greed.

CAG’s contract ends this year and he’s a goner. We can only hope that his pride/ego will keep him working hard to solve the multitude of problems on D.

I hope Vad gets to play a lot against BC because he’s the future. I also hope that CPJ recognizes that maybe Vad is more suited to the pistol than the TO and he adjusts his offense to suit personnel.

I guess we’ll see and get to write and either complain or rejoice about it. NCSU beat FSU so anything can happen on a ball field.

Technology Majors are not attractive to today’s Athlete, need some non technical majors besides Management. Need different Offense with more passing – maybe the pure spread with just some TO.
Need New Defense Coordinator. CPJ is paid Millions to recruit a few d1 and a lot of d2 players. I think most GT fans are about fed up with the overall GT commitment to athletics. I sure won’t be in the stands ever again unless I see a commitment from BOR, The Hill, AD and CPJ (or new coach).

Comments from the GT blogs this entire year continue to echo: “Al Groh’s Defense is terrible” and “Tevin is a nice young man, but panics in clutch situations, when the offense needs him most.” I am not making suggestions as to how to fix our issues, but it is interesting that Jeff Schultz wrote an article that identified these exact issues and sentiments last year, just after the 2011 Georgia game. Defense will never be adequate as long as PJ refuses to make changes to his offense.

How does the defense get ready to face teams that throw the ball and spread it around? Answer is they can’t! We do not have the personnel or systems to simulate or give our defense the proper practice and preparation to stop a traditional offense. When everyone on the offense is recruited to fit the triple option, how can you even come close to simulating what we will face week in and week out? Our talent on defense is not this bad, they just don’t get the proper training. Just like in business, untrained employees will give you bad results.

____________

Since you think we do have “enough good ballplayers”, think about this:

When CPJ first took over we had 4 future NFL DLs on the field at the same time in Wommack’s 4-3, we had a future NFL draftee at Safety (Burnett) and a CB that got a FA tryout and was on a practice squad for at least 1 yr. (Jahi Word-Daniels).

2 of our OLs got a sniff in the NFL Cord Howard & Andrew Gardner, not to mention our WRs, Bey-Bey & Cone, RBs (Dwyer & Allen), our QB (Nesbitt) was such an elite physical specimen he got a yr. in the NFL at Safety via the practice squad and eventually made the active roster.

From that list above we had MANY PLAYERS represented on the All-ACC 1st or 2nd Team.

Now compare that to this yrs. team & last yrs. team, last yr. we only had Uzzi on the 1st team all-ACC and I think we had Attouchou or Burnett as a 2nd team LB and THAT’S IT!

This yr. we won’t have ANY PLAYERS make 1st or 2nd Team All-ACC!

If you cannot recognize that kind of MASSIVE TALENT DRAIN over a “short” 3-yr. window, then you are supporting CPJ to point that it is hurting GT FB as a program.

The anti-WnE crap was cute for a short while but now you and SuperSize and your “merry band of followers” are now coming across as delusional.

Fans from other colleges are reading these blogs and are wondering how a fanbase can have such a LOW CFB-IQ when the problems are quite obvious to all outsiders.

Dook & Md. will have more all-ACC 1st & 2nd teamers than will GT this season, and that is all CPJ’s fault.

We just don’t have the “groceries” to cook the meals that the fanbase wants to eat!

Tech at least won against Clemson and VT in the uni dept. Those all white unis are what Tech needed badly after the darker gold always, and the jacket nest, honeycomb hexagons are cool art. I went out and found a jar of honeycomb honey at chain grocery store after seeing those, and it is good honey. The art I don’t like is Buzz. A return to the yj from ‘69-’73 is needed, the same yj the T-Club jackets had with the yj patch on them, the ones worn by Chick Granning’s team, the player who had his jaw broken by Darwin Holt of Alabama, thus causing BD to decide to drop out of the SEC. Why have Buzz after this Tech history? Is it the goal to make Tech forget about Chick Granning? How would you like to wear a Tech sweatshirt or t-shirt with Buzz on it and not know that the person inside the Buzz costume is a female? That would coincide with the pink, powder puff football socks and black thigh high stockings Tech has worn…on a gridiron? Maybe for powder puff football from the 60’s. I see some pro teams are beginning to wear pink. I believe the Patriots wore pink shoes yesterday, or maybe it was the Broncos. These are immoral signs for sports. A guy should get a haircut and be a guy.

1 4 GT, There is no question we can score points (except in the 4th quarter) but that isn’t enough. You can blame much of our defensive issues on coaching but at the end of the day, if your players aren’t good enough no amount of coaching in the world is going to save you. By the time a player get’s to this level he should know how to tackle or cover a receiver. Our guys can’t tackle and they can’t cover. That is a serious lack of talent and GT is recruiting more of them! That means more of the same for years to come!

Her I am, and humbled. Remember, when we were all blogging back and forth before the season, old dog told you our o-line would be exposed against the better teams. We bullied up on the lesser teams, but against S.C. you can break it down like you want but upfront was where we got dominated. If we played them again next week, the same thing would happen. We were not good in any facet, but mainly up front. So, as I stated prior to the season, y’all need a defense and we need a line…….ain’t changed much, has it?

ANOTHER “GUTLESS” PERFORMANCE BY THE NOW FAMOUS AL GROH “GUTLESS UNDERMANNED” DEFENSE.
Poor recruiting by Coach PJ has caught up with him….miss Chan Gailey yet? At least he could recruit and his players were not “gutless”.
Vad Lee apparently does not need the expereince this year.
Oh yeah? If you think this year is bad….wait ’til next year.

I am certainly disappointed, but just like last year after 6 games, things are never as good or as bad as they seem. I think GT has about average talent compared to the last 15 years or so. We usually have somewhere between 4-8 players that eventually make it to the NFL on our roster at any given time. Right now, if I had to name a few that have the potential, I’d say Hunt Days, Attouchu, Sweeting, Young, Smith, Mason, and Uzzi…. Sounds about average to me.

I would like to make a public bet with WnE. I believe GT is still a very talented team. I believe that our coaches haven’t forgotten how to coach. If GT goes 6-7 or worse, I’ll leave here and never post again (I’ll even ask Ken to block me). But if GT goes 8-5 or better, WnE has to leave and never return. Will you take my bet WnE?!?!?!

Groh has got to go. I really don’t care that there aren’t coordinators available mid-season. Let an assistent do the job, maybe even Julian Burnett. Let him wear his own #40 jersay to the game as an interim coach, can’t be any worse.

I don’t blame CPJ for going for it on fourth down from his own side of the 50 given the expectation of our defensive performance. He knows that we need to score on almost every possession to overcome Al Groh.

We can’t afford a head coaching change now, not that I condone that move, anyway so we need to fix what we can. I actually like CPJ’s affense and believe that scoring 30+ points per game should get you the win. Call me old school, but defense wins games. Our lack of defense, any defense, changes the offensive gameplan.

As for a new defensive coordinator, we need someone young. Take a chance on someone like Lance Thompson, very good guy, young (relatively) and energetic.

That’s a sucker bet!

GT & CPJ gets fat on weak competition and based on your scenario is allowed to LOSE to UGA yet again to end the season 7-5 and then it is a 50-50 shot in the bowl game vs. a VERY WEAK bottom tier ACC-Bowl to get to 8-5.

GT has been so bad the first half of the season, that a 7-5 finish would lead to a very crappy Bowl especially since the ACC is clearly the WEAKEST of all the BCS conferences including the Big East.

If you really believed that GT had the “talent” you listed above then you would make that same BET and wager that GT goes 6-0 over the last 6 games to go 8-4 AND we have to also win a BOWL that would make CPJ & Co. 9-4 to end the season.

You are basically saying that you have FAITH in our TALENT, yet you make an allowance for CPJ to LOSE to UGA yet again!

How much faith is that?

Will you go for my counter-bet?

Of those guys you listed Hunt-Days has the best shot, he closes quickly to the ball and has shown good speed and change of direction.

Uzzi & Mason are HORRIBLE pass blockers and are short and don’t have the “long arms” that NFL scouts are looking for, also Uzzi has had a problem with injuries so his chances are looking dimmer by the day.

Attouchu has disappeared and right now he’s looking like a Free Agent guy or a 7th round draft pick, JA-45 looks nothing like Daryl Smith, Key Fox or Philip Wheeler guys that were drafted in the 3rd-4th round range, Attouchu is not the can’t miss NFL guy that he projected to be after his T-Fr. season, basically JA-45 hasn’t gotten any better since then.

Orwin Smith has no defined position, he’s a high 4.5s or low 4.6s guy without much size, at the NFL level guys Orwin’s size need to run in the 4.4s with great acceleration & change of direction, he hasn’t run between the tackles at GT, he hasn’t pass-blocked at GT, and he has only avg. 7 touches per game from scrimmage over his GT career, add in all that and then take into account that Dwyer & Allen were 6th & 7th round draft picks and it is looking like Orwin won’t be drafted at all, he’ll have to make an NFL club as a FA.

Sweeting has looked terrible!

Nothing else need to be said about Sweeting.

Lou Young has size & some athleticism, he has a better chance than Sweeting.

From your list, 2 guys have a pretty god shot at the NFL, the rest is just optimism on your part..

Before you dismiss my analysis, keep in mind that NFL GMs are a lot more critical than I am.

I still have faith in CPJ as an offensive coach, but I do find blame with him for the defensive problems. He hired Groh so there for he carries some of the blame for the struggles. The offense is under presure to score every time they have the ball and no offense can do that every game. This is causing the players to try and force things and think to much as well as making CPJ try and force some things he should not and shy away from some things as well. Groh WILL be gone after this season, but somebody has to find a way to dial in some plays that these players can perfrom and give the TEAM a chance in the next six games. I am holding a glimmer of hope that they can take 4 of the next six. The team showed a lot of effort in the loss to Clemson and hopefully the players and coaches can build off that.

I will say it again PJ is a lousy big game coach 3-18 vs Miami, VT, UGA and bowl games. Add in loss to MTSU. Time for a coach that has a system you can recreuit 4 and 5 star kids too. Not some HS gimmick offense. Not Grohs fault on D either. What top defense recruit wants to be cut block for 6 months in games and practice and risk a serious injury??? REALY PEOPLE.
