Georgia Tech quoteboard

Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson:

“Right now, we’ve got to play close to perfect. Clearly, we have to score more points. They’ve got some really good skill players. It’s like I told the team: We get a kickoff return on the 1-yard line, we missed two field goals. We missed several tackles again, especially when we could have gotten them off the field. We didn’t convert on a couple of fourth downs where we needed to get points that would have been big. When you do that, you’re not going to win too many games.”

On defense:

“They’re pretty good offensively, too. They’re the best crowd we’ve played offensively. But it’s been a struggle. The effort was better. The effort was much better. I think we played O.K. in spurts. We did get a couple of turnovers. I don’t know, after the opening series, if they ever punted.”

On the safety:

“We had a bust. I’ll have to look at it. There were a slew of people out there. There weren’t many people blocked, but I think the linebacker was the one that tackled him. We should have been outside released and we inside released.”

On the bye:

“Well, you’d rather be winning going into a bye. Clearly, the first half of the season is not what we hoped for, not what we wanted. We have the back half to try and atone for that. We have to re-set some goals, re-set some things and see if we can’t come back and do a little better.”

On pressure to keep scoring:

“You’ve just got to try to score. You’ve got to call plays. I don’t worry about that. You’ve got to call plays.”

A-back Orwin Smith:

“I saw a major difference, just from guys getting ready to play a game. Even at halftime, guys were still into it. That plays a big part in football, period. You just have to stay faithful. I saw guys with more drive than previous weeks.”

On tough breaks:

“I consider it bad luck when you’re doing the right things and still losing. But we’re still making mistakes. It’s self-inflicted, the reason we’re losing. I just feel like we’re that close to being good, the games we’ve lost, even this one. We just have to do better.”

On the safety:

“The mike (linebacker) was flowing real hard all game. Just that play, they happened to send him at the right time and he kind of beat me to the edge. … Right when I got the ball, I saw a crease and that’s the same thing Tevin saw. But with that mike, he’s behind his defensive linemen. You really don’t see him till the last second. It was a surprise.”

Clemson linebacker Spencer Shuey on tackle for safety:

“They ran the same play. We have been preparing for that play all week. And once I saw the kickoff team pin them down on the 1, I knew they had a pretty good chance to run the ball. I just got a good read and got a good jump on the ball and was able to make a play.”

Clemson coach Dabo Swinney:

“We did really well the whole game up front, but we struggled with the perimeter. We made the changes that were necessary and forced Georgia Tech to put drives together. In the first half, they made a lot of big plays and we took that away from them in the second half.”

Regarding the safety, why don’t they ask coach why he didn’t run a dive or two to get some breathing room before trying to beat the defense to the edge. Sheesh (to borrow GS disgust!). Really though, that is some stupid play calling from your own goal.

Of course, the safety is not really on the coach, he’d rather throw his player under the bus for the return. Great job coach. And not converting the 4th downs was not your fault either right coach? I mean the first one, whether TW screwed up or not, he had no business going for it on the VERY FIRST SERIES OF THE GAME. Hello, is anybody home there coach. I mean you only had about 5 minutes to think that one over between the fabulous “draw them off sides play” and the time out. What a knuckle head. Let’s just spot them a TD to start the game (musta been the defense’s fault right coach?)

We want to know what the HELL Johnson is going to do to insure we might have a prayer and I mean a sliver of hope to beat uga. Will he start Vad Lee?? Ask the damn question. We know it’s not Tevins fault for the L’s but Vad’s ceiling is much higher and with game experience we might have a shot at beating better teams later this year and hopefully next season if Vad gets his reps now. What about his view on the 3-4 D and coach Groh’s job security. Is this not a result based business????? I love the fact that you get interviews and post them somewhat fast but these softball questions are getting hard to read. It’s like the media and Obama ask a real freaking question. He knows they suck we sure as hell know now what the hell is the solution. I don’t think that CPJ needs to be fired. I mean we have scored a lot of points in every game. Two games we put up 30+ points. I do believe that Tevin Washington needs to be benched after another pathetic game out of him. Every time Vad Lee has been put in, he has gotten us a first down and then CPJ takes him out and puts Reggie Ball, I mean tevin Washington back in???

Al Groh is TOO old tokeep up with any fast tempo team. #1 Johnson on D has gotten BURNED in every game, yet he still starts?????? We need to go back to a 4-3 D and RECRUIT BETTER athletes!!! It’s his 3rd year as GTs D coordinator and we still SUCK?????????? Fans need to PROTEST and NOT show up to the home games until Groh is FIRED. If Groh isn’t fired by Monday, then it is obvious that CPJ runs the show and DRad has no input. He let Hewitt stick around much too long and run the basketball team into the ground despite several probations that should have gotten him fired without paying the buyout. DRad keeps spending millions on building improvements but won’t do anything to put a decent product on the field to make that money back. Groh or DRad have to go this week. We will see who is in charge on Monday.

The comments in this thread astound me to say the least. Our offensive style isn’t an issue. The passing has finally arrived. Our problem on offense is that Tevin has poor decision making skills, poor ball carrier vision, and no clutch time ability. Keep in mind we’ve had a grand total of 2 starting QBs under PJ. Nesbitt was a better runner, decision maker, and wanted to be the game changer he was.

Groh gotta go on defense. When you start giving up 500+ yards a game your third season into coaching, then you are not doing what you are paid to do. He is either mishandling the talent we have or something. His play calling leaves much to be desired too. How do you blow as many 3rd downs as we did yesterday?

The Current State of GT FB:

The GTAA cannot afford to pay Hewitt and CPJ to NOT work at GT, CPJ will be owed about $2.6MM for the next 4 years after this season.

Not only can we not fire him after this year, but we probably cannot fire him after next yr. either.

We’ll be lucky to have the money to fire him when he has 2- years remaining, about $5.2MM left for GT to buyout (Chan’s buyout was only $4.0MM total for 4 yrs left).

This means that CPJ will likely sign at LEAST 2 more Recruiting classes and still be the HC when the initial contacts are made for a 3rd additional Recruiting class.

In summary, it will get much worse before it gets better.

Negative Recruiting has hurt GT more than most schools, but now that everyone knows CPJ is basically a lame-duck HC that the school cannot afford to fire, look for upcoming Recruiting classes to get worse even by CPJ-standards.

Next yr. we’ll have a new QB, no Orwin, on Uzzi, 1 new CB, 2 new DLs.

Before you welcome the new Starters, remember that the guys behind the ones leaving, that you might want to criticize on their way out are BETTER than their back-ups now and there is no guarantee that back-ups moving into starting roles next yr. will make them better players.

All this is a result of DRad bringing in a triple-SLOPtion HC with NO BCS recruiting experience and then, upping his contract from $1.6MM to $2.3MM-$2.6MM after just one yr. when no other schools were bidding against GT.

GT was so desperate to beat UGA DRad overreacted to us beating one of the more flawed UGA teams in a long time.

And now we are going to pay for it by suffering for 7-10 seasons AFTER CPJ is finally let go.

Players play and coaches coach. Coaches also recruit. When the majority of the talent in a football rich state do not even consider your school or are not qualified to attend your school you look elsewhere for talent. CPJ has not learned that by the looks of the 2013 class. His offensive scheme is great and he proved that his first two years, The bottom line is you to have the talent and CPJ’s downfall will be his inability to recruit the talent needed.

1. We’ve got a week off and 6 games left. Last season we went 6-0, then 2-4, so maybe we can reverse that. Regroup, RECOGNIZE that what you are doing is not working, and restart with some new ideas and game plans.

2. After watching the SC D line, I will agree that we do not have that same level of talent on our line. After seeing the packed stadium, we do not have that same level of fans. Is it chicken or the egg—need recruits to bring fans or fans to bring recruits—perhaps a little of both. That said, we did have enough talent to win the ACC and be a top 10 or 15 team this year. So since we’re not there, then that falls on the coaches.

3. BC is terrible and I hope we play Vad a lot. It’s not that all Vad supporters think TW is terrible or Vad is some panacea to our woes, but he does represent what our offense could be. TW does not look comfortable in the pistol doing a 2 minute drill. Just think if CPJ had developed Vad to run a hurry up offense (which suits his style) as many of us suggested 3 months ago, then maybe we would not have looked so foolish at the end of the half and end of the game. I’m not saying to trash the TO, but let’s get a little more of the Hawaii/Oregon open it up offense. PLEASE!

4. The D needs lots of help in our coaching—on and off field. Example: Clemson puts 3 wide to one side of the field, we put 3 defenders out there, then Clemson brings one in motion to the other side and we make no corresponding shift—leaving 3 out to cover 2 and no one picks up the motion. It happened multiple times. Heck we’d do better doing just like backyard football where you just man up. We’ve got a lot to work on these next two weeks!

@WnE: I rarely ever agree with you and I certainly do not approve of your condescending attitude and diatribe against GT, but from a financial perspective, GT did not learn their lesson from the Paul Hewitt debacle. You are correct in that such a massive pay raise for CPJ was unwarranted as there was not any major clamoring from other schools to hire him.

That said, I do not think CPJ is a bad coach and perhaps this year will give him a little humility. I’ve not seen it, but seen other comments about his F-bombs along the sidelines and hopefully he’ll clean that up—is that the kind of leadership we want at Tech? I like his fire and competitiveness, but he can show that in a classy way. I also hope that he will lose a little stubborness and recognize that opposing Ds worry about the TO and if we expand our playbook with more passing it will not only give Ds more things to worry about, but it will open up the TO as well. Look what 3 passes did in the 1st Qtr against Clemson. As many posting here have pondered, will CPJ stick with the TO or adjust his offensive scheme to match his personnel? Tech can’t afford to fire CPJ so we’ll see over the next 4 years how that plays out.

What will everyone say when we lose to Duke? I’d say there is about an 80% chance that will happen. They put up points, and we have no D. Wipe the slate clean and start over with new coaching staff. At some point you have to admit this has been a bad experiment and go to plan B. It isn’t called Heinz 57 because they made it on the first try.

Yeller Bug, right on. Agree with everything you posted. Being a supporter of CPJ, I’m encouraged that Tech won’t over-react and fire him. I’d give him a year or two. CAG is another story. Firing him now won’t give us the best chance to win out. End if season is another story. And yes, play Vad. Have to change direction and plan for the future. That what happens when you are a senior and not getting it done. Younger classes play.

absolutely agree GT-UT. Start playing Vad now at least in alternating series. TW has clearly reached his maximum potential and while I actually think it’s shows that CPJ is not the monster people think him to be in sticking with Tevin, the time has come to play for the UGA game and next year. Vad may have committed a few turnovers but he also probably would have taken it to the house several times against Clemson.

While the offense has been pretty decent , we still have not seen what it can do with a Vad Lee or Justin Thomas at the helm. No reason to talk about getting rid of CPJ until we see what the next 2 years hold.

Groh is a different matter – we need to start looking for a new DC now – one who can coach, inspire a defense AND one who has strong recruiting ties to Georgia and the southeast..

Remember when CPJ first got here and he was decisive, playing to win the game, not playing ” not to lose”. We all looked at each other and said “we’ve got us a football coach now”. 5 years later and the man is hesitant in his calls. 4th and 1 was never a cause for concern. CPJ has always figured his O could gain a yard, he didn’t care where they were. Now, he’s unsure. So he runs that silly play trying to draw them offsides, then calls timeout, and in his mind he’s still thinking surely we can get 1 yard. But our QB is not big enough, our line not strong enough and worst of all, our BBack is , as Beau Bock would say, a little light in the dumper. Coach is conflicted and that’s a recipe for disaster.
CPJ is also use to just turning the D over to the DC and staying out of it. Now we have a DC that can’t get signals called quick enough, plays guys that are clearly not the most talented, thinks that offenses today are still the same as they were 10 years ago. So CPJ now has to get involved with the D. Why would he have to say that “we’ve got to get x player on the field more.” I had to watch us play an under sized NT start and play significant snaps for 2 years because he had a “great motor”. Now
I’m watching a 3 year starter at safety who is too slow and consistently takes a bad angle on plays, overrunning the play and missing tackles. Al Groh probably thinks he’s “a great kid with a great motor”. Having to worry about the D so much is also conflicting CPJ.
We have confused and conflicted coaches and it shows on the field. And it’s not much fun being a fan of that.

Was one of the, maybe 300, fans at Death Valley yesterday. Been going there for years now. Bottom line is the better team won yesterday. And ultimately, gt34backer is right, “Defense wins ballgames and until Tech can recruit Bigger, Stronger, Faster players we’ll have problems against other teams.”

On another note, for those of you who weren’t there yesterday – the Clemson football game atmosphere is like a misguided teenager searching for an identity. It’s this WEIRD mix of Barnum and Bailey on steroids, coupled with a big dose of Kum Ba Yah. They don’t just start out with the national anthem and their alma mater… there’s also My Country ‘Tis of Thee, America the Beautiful, the Pledge of Allegiance, a prayer… we may even have sung This Little Light of Mine. I lost track. Now, not that there’s anything wrong with that. It just gets weird when all of that show is followed by ALL the Clemson faithful (everyone… 5 year old kids to 70 year old women) foaming orange at the mouth as they yell “You suck!” every time the Tech band plays our 2nd down song. So much for “Go Tech.” You can tell that they feel very clever and delighted with themselves as they yell this throughout the game.

Now, here’s the good part. One of these above-mentioned female Clemson women actually turned around and scolded three Tech students beside us who dared yell out, “Kick their a@$!” as our band was playing in the third quarter. This woman said, ” I have a child here with me. (He looked to be about 12.) You should be ashamed of yourselves for yelling profanity in his ears.” Then I kid you not, the next 2nd down, every member of that family, including the kid, were yelling “You suck” so loudly that they were practically spitting on the people in front of them.

So, yeah, we’re having a downer of a year, but I left Clemson feeling really glad that I don’t wear orange. When the self-righteous fall, they will fall hard.
