Examining Groh’s work at Tech

From Doug Roberson:

When Paul Johnson hired Al Groh after firing Dave Wommack, he was asked what he liked about his new defensive coordinator.

Johnson, fresh off winning the 2009 ACC championship with a defense that oddly gave up a lot of big plays but was effective in big situations, said that Groh, known for his 3-4 defense, would be able to fix things when they were going wrong.

Some things – tackling, fundamentals, limiting big plays — have “broken” in the past two weeks in losses to Miami and Middle Tennessee State. The defense has given up more than 1,100 yards and an average of 45.5 points. There’s not a lot of time for repairs with this week’s game at Clemson, which averages 510 yards and 40.2 points per game with a balanced offense.

Johnson didn’t try to defend his team’s play during his press conference on Tuesday, but at the same time defended Groh while holding himself and his staff accountable.

“… I don’t think the man forgot everything he knew in the last two weeks,” Johnson said. “But ultimately, we’re responsible. We’ve got to get it on the field. It doesn’t matter what you know, it’s what happens. So we’ve got to do a better job of getting it on the field.”

The reasons for the poor play are somewhat evident: poor tackling, poor fundamentals and, against Middle Tennessee, a lack of energy. Johnson said “You’ve got to do some of that stuff. Every time the ball breaks the line of scrimmage, it doesn’t have to be a touchdown.”

At his introductory press conference in 2010, Groh said hoped the players would pick up the 3-4 as fast as possible, but said it usually takes three years for the players to operate more instinctually.

Now in year three, Groh’s defense is statistically worse than Wommack’s in his final season.

This year, the defense is allowing more points (26.8) and yards per game (397) than they have since Groh was hired, while allowing slightly fewer rushing yards (155.2).

In Wommack’s last season, the Yellow Jackets gave up 24.8 points and 360.3 yards per game. Their worst two-game stretch occurred against Mississippi State and Florida State in which they gave up an average of 37.5 points and a total 1,026 yards. The Yellow Jackets won both of those games because the defense forced seven turnovers and the offense averaged 46 points and totaled more than 1,000 yards.

Groh’s defense this year isn’t making those stops. The overtime losses to Virginia Tech and Miami illustrated the critical-stop issue. In the defeat to Middle Tennessee the defense, missing two key players because of injury, came out flat and it showed in the missed tackles that allowed the Blue Raiders to total more than 500 yards.

Groh said the team has always emphasized tackling drills in practice, and focused on it even more this week ahead of the game against the Tigers, who feature numerous playmakers like Sammy Watkins and DeAndre Hopkins who need but one mistake to turn the routine into a big play.

One thing Wommack’s defense had that Groh’s does not is a consistent playmaker.

Defensive end Derrick Morgan was Wommack’s big-play man, finishing with 12.5 sacks to win the conference’s defensive player of the year award before he left to become a first-round selection in the NFL draft. No Tech player has come close to reaching that total since. Linebacker Brad Jefferson had four in 2010 and Jeremiah Attaochu six last year.

No Tech player has more than one sack this year. The team has just seven. Attaochu, the outside linebacker many expected to become a force, has been dealing with injuries this year and hasn’t been as effective, posting just one-half sack.

Johnson said it’d be great to have another Morgan, but that it’s wishful thinking to expect to have one every year. He indicated that he hopes that players, like Attaochu or Jemea Thomas, who have shown a lot of potential, will become consistent playmakers.

“It’s not like we’re null and void of players,” he said.

Without that consistent playmaker to pressure quarterbacks, Tech’s defense is giving up big plays in campaign-promise bunches. After allowing 50 in 2010 and 47 in 2011, the defense has allowed 22 this year and is on pace to give up 57 if team plays in a bowl. Wommack’s defense gave up 66 in 2009, but made stops when it needed to defeat Wake Forest and Clemson in the ACC championship game.

Defensive end Izaan Cross said if the team will focus on everyone doing his job, “the playmakers will emerge.”

But he knows they can’t play like they did the previous two games if they hope to beat the Tigers.

“We’ve got to all come together and have a conscious effort to come out with everything we can,” he said. “It’s going to be a tough game.”

Tech under Groh

A look at Georgia Tech’s averages on defense in coordinator Al Groh’s three years:

Year/Scoring/Rushing/Passing/Total/Per play

2010: 25.2/169.7/201.9/371.6/5.7

2011: 26.1/161.5/197.6/359.2/5.5

2012: 26.8/155.2/241.8/397/5.7

Last year under Wommack

2009: 24.8/151.6/208.6/360.3/6.1

It certainly helps if there is a dominate play maker like Morgan. Burnett is missed this year. Last year he was the glue that held things together in many games, he was able to make up for mistakes of his teammates. I think we have plenty of good players remaining, and the scheme is not necessarily preventing success. Everyone: players, coaches and fans to some extent need to pull together to up our performance and execution.

We need to go back to a four three, which ain’t going to happen under Groh. The D-Line makes very few plays. We need real player makers at Defensive end. Remember Morgan Burnett? Three stud linebackers to go with a stud d- line. This maybe the worst Tech defense since the days of the Bill Lewis teams. If I have stomach another loss like last Saturday( to that team that lost to (McNeese St) I think I would puke. Tech should be in the same conference as Georgia State. Sorry to sound like such a sore loser but I am so disgusted with this defense it is really sickening. Did we really lose to Middle TN or was that just a bad dream?

@ Sammy……I don’t know why you would count on a fast start this week, when you haven’t had one yet this year. And USC has the best defense you will face regular season this year. So don’t hold your breath. In fact, USC is the best team you will face regular season this year. They’re a helluva lot better than Mizzou, Vandy, FL Atlantic, and Buffalo. And Tennessee exposed you last week for just how weak you really are but refuse to admit. Remember, the mutts struggled for awhile against Mizzou; USC had no trouble with them at all.

It’s time for some chastising of the blog “moderator”. While Ken does a really good job of giving us good info on the doings @ the Flats and I appreciate it………..lately the final paragraph is a reminder to us “children” to make nice….with daily reminders for us to not cuss, not call others vile names & (my favorite) to not be “antagonistic”….no matter which team the posters support. We are reminded the above are offenses for which we can be banned. Daily reminders………..no punishments. There is at least one guy that I, and I would think others do also, find very antagonistic. He made 6 straight (7 of 8) posts on one of Ken.s blogs. If that doesn’t meet the criteria of being antagonistic, I don’t know what else will. His initials are S….. D…. I find him to be very antagonistic. Enforce your rules or stop with your daily reminder to “make nice”.

I think for either to side to post pot stirring comments on the other’s blog is just plain stupid & silly, childish behavior. The GT guys doing this forget how outnumbered we are & that “they” can literally swamp us in their kaka. So just grow up. Both sides just grow up and stop it. I know you won’t, but I had to say this. Interesting, Groh’s D has gotten worse (and has been worse than Womack’s last D) in the main criteria, scoring, every year.
Rushing D has gotten slightly better, but Passing D has gotten much worse (it’s still kind of early but the writing is on the wall, every team will throw the ball a bunch and run the hurry up O).

We could see that this was a mistake when in Game 1, the very first possession of Al’s career here, South Carolina State had a 17 play, 7:35 minute, 58 yd drive. It only resulted in a FG. Their next possession was an 11 play, 4 minute, 53 yd drive where they missed the FG. Right there we saw an inability to get the other team off the field, and that was fricken South Carolina State. It hasn’t gotten any better, in fact it looks to have gotten worse.

Groh Must Go!

And 14GT, yes it is sad when Ken has to put his “children behave” disclaimer on every blog. Sorry Ken, you are doing a great job for us Tech fans that would like to have a real blog to discuss GT football. Sadly there are too many “children” out there.

That sounds like Dave Braine’s lame attitude when he said we can’t expect to win 9 or 10 games every year. We have one of the highest paid coaches in the country and have a great location right in downtown Atlanta, the capital of The South. You should go over and see how quiet tek folks are over on the UGA blogs. Ya’ll been mighty nice and well behaved the last couple of weeks. Hardly a trace of you over there. However, if the tables were turned (on the quality of our football seasons), do you think it would be quiet over there? History says no. Yet I am the only Dawg fan really over here. 99.99% of Dawg fans feel sorry for what tek is going through. It’s ugly and will only get worse before it gets better. Having Attachou back will help, but there needs to be some serious changes from the last 2 weeks. My biggest gripe has been with the play of the safeties, particularly #1 Johnson. He is slow to react and misses tackles a lot. His missed tackle on the 4th down play against VT cost us that game. I would consider moving Jemea T to free safety. It sounds like Thomas is really showing out on the scout team, so it should be an interesting spring on the flats.

Both Groh and Womack have been awful and the common denominator has been Johnson as HC. There is no way you can convince me that Ga Tech will ever be able to prepare for pro-style offenses running high profile recruits, when they are practicing against a scout team of lesser recruits themselves recruited for the option. Tech doesnt have the Calvin Johnson’s and Tashard Choice’s with Dwyer and Nesbitt in waiting anymore. This defense gets into a game, and they are seeing offenses executed at a much faster, precise, and powerful pace than they will ever see in practice.

When the team loses leads in the 4th quarter they should be able to hold, they lose confidence in their coaches. The three losses – Utah, VT and Miami – demoralized the team, especially with Attaochu and Watts out for the MTSU game.

And if MTSU beats us badly, how bad will it be with Clemson at their home, loud crowd? Unless we put men on the field instead of the girls we had last week, it will be worse. Time for the boys to man up!!

Seems to me the team has 3 choices: get beat worse this week, play it close but lose, or get out there and give it their all and win this thing!! If they get hammered this week like last week, then it is time to make some coaching changes!!! Players don’t suddenly forget how to tackle, but now that I think about it, we have not been so good at tackling last year either. Seems we hit them high, bounce off and they keep going. IDK what to really think about 2morrow. Based on how the D has played the past 2 games, and how good/explosive we all know Clemson’s O is, it’s practically impossible not to think Clemson will put 40+ on the board. Now, can GT pull a 2009 Doak Campbell out of their collective arses?

Let’s see what The U does this week vs. UNC (with a supposed D that is good). The Canes backed-up the OT W over the Jackets with a heck of a performance vs. John Tenuta’s Wolfpack D, maybe the Miami L won’t look as bad as it seems right now?

This happens every year. We always hope Tech will get better by the next game.
But they don’t. It is what it is!
I predict that Tech will lose to Clem’s Son in overtime.
Of course TW could turn it over five times and it will be a blow out.
Time for something new. Look for Johnson to stay one more year.

But especially this week, being that the Irish D is 3rd in the country in pts vs @ 9.0 / game (Navy-10, Purdue-17, Mich St-3, Mich-6). If the Canes put up #s in South Bend, then they’re pretty darn good on O.

Has Groh done any work while at Tech??? I haven’t noticed.

Al Groh must go. We need new life and a new eye. We should hire a young DC that can recruit and bring energy that 18-22 y/o kids will feed on. The current Defense does not appear to play naturally and is often out of position, then the players miss tackles when they are in position. I understand that talent is lacking, but the product displyed the past 2.5 years is completely unacceptable.

Go back to a 4-3 one-gap scheme built around speed, pressure and disruption. This 3-4 build a wall and react crap is out of date. It works with NFL players, but not at Tech.

We have an offense that can score enough points to win, now we need a D that can hold the fort. Giving up 42 and 49 points the past 2 weeks is just flat-out not getting it done.

Good luck teckies. Sorry ’bout all the D-problems. We all (us Dawgs included) have tried to over-analyze, and all fans likewise are arm-chair quarterbacks. However in this case, avoid the kool-aid and go straight to the facts, which are:
1. Not nearly enough talent to be top-tier.
2. A D-coach who is either out of his element, cannot coach poor talent up a little, and who apparantly has left tackling out of practices althgether.
3. A scheme that due to parts one and two combined y’all do nt have the personal to run.
4. A Defense that in front of God and everyone last week 100% quit! This is a non-debatable point. Any wa-hoo who watched the game saw that!
This is not down-grading y’all….for goodness sake we had Martinez as a D-coordinator, so we cannot talk. However, you just gotta start over friends! The true Tech supporters, like Supersize, who will support the team no matter what should be up-in-arms! This D couldn’t stop a flightless hummingbird!

I was always under the impression that the head coach was responsible for how the whole team played in the game. Now “CPJ” keeps saying “we need to do better” instead of “I need to do better”.
For that reason alone I say can his butt.
BTW- I am a fan of the option. When its working, you have to hold your breath on every play and hope the mesh or the pitch goes well and every so often you break the big one.
So, I don’t hate the option, but Johnson is responsible for Groh and everyone else. If he does not fire him now and pick up someone who can do the job, they both need to go.

Y’alls offense kind of works, but it won’t attract top-tier talent. It is run primarily at the service academies where it works for several reasons…..it is not seen that often so other teams are not prepared, and you can slip up on folks when you ARE a little less talented. But attracting a great QB ain’t gonna happen since his body will be ruined by the end of his career. (Like Nesbitt, he may get a shot at another position, but Nesbit was a STUD D-back in high school.) By and large the folks won’t flock there for this system. With my wife’s grandad in y’all’s HOF, I want to see you do better. The offense MAY survive if you will open it up a little. But the recruiting and D philosophy is a train-wreck, and y’all are a better school than to live with that!

Groh’s gone after this year barring an astonishing turnaround. Johnson likely will get one more year to produce again. Though bringing-back O’Leary and Friedgen (if it were feasible, I don’t know) would probably be better, it’s not likely to happen. Johnson’s record his first two years (’08 against UGA, ‘09 against versus VT, ACC championship, Clemson, etc.) and other factors will prevent him from getting booted at the five-year mark. Tech tolerated Gailey’s slop for six years so Johnson will probably get at least another season.

It’s like this – Tech goes 13-1, wins the ACC, wins the Orange Bowl, but loses to Georgia: crap year. Tech goes 8-5, loses to Virginia, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech, UNC, and some team in a bowl game, but beats Georgia: good year.

Hell, O’Leary went 8-4 in 1999 after squandering a 17-0 lead at Virginia, inexplicably losing to Wake Forest, and playing flat and losing against Miami in the Gator Bowl…BUT he beat Georgia (albeit with the crazy Jasper Sanks fumble call in a poorly-officiated game). That was a better season for the Jackets then Johnson’s 2009 year.

I don’t think you or any of us will have to worry on that. He WILL be gone if he doesn’t beat them either this year or next. I remember when Johnson came in and said something to the nature of “If you want to beat UGA, I’m your man.” He beat them year 1, next year loses then says “well its abou getting to a bowl game.” Personally, I’d rather finish the year with only 1 win (that being against UGA) than go to a bowl game (and probably lose that) and not beat UGA.

Groh has these spurts where you think the defense is turning the bend like with Clemson and Utah (until the 4th aquarter) last year and Virginia this year. Then you get something like Miami and MTSU the past two weeks and realize it’s crap. With Wommack you could at least expect a horrible first-half and then adjustments at half-time. Empty Seats

October 6th, 2012
9:24 am

Tech is stuck with pj through 2016 due to Hewitt buy out and building projects, like the new indoor practice facility which has obviously helped the quality of the product on the field.

Should have built the team first, filled the seats and used that revenue to build facilities.

Also please read the last NCAA findings against Tech, costing Scholarships, ACC title, and respect nationwide. No players were sighted. It was the Athletic Department Administration.

One can delegate authority, not responsibility.

All the while pj has proven to be less than Head Coach material. Comments on radio and after losing games which does not represent Tech, for example.

And now this dc debacle.

Let the College of Management run the Athletic Department, with Bobby Cremins, or Mark Price, or John Sally, etc as AD. Someone with a vested interest in Tech, rather than interest in a sweet retirement plan.

The financial budget will not allow a Coaching change until 2017. It is quite ironic that just after signing a $10,000,000 contract Tech gets this low quality football team in return.

Good job D-rad! You are doing an excellent job securing your retirement. Congratulations! Are we on a secret mission to see how many coaches we can set for life regardless of quality?

Jacket Detective

So far, Tech is revealing changes in strategy.
On the sack we at least brought 4.
On offense, we threw and looked good doing it.

lxUn1c0

October 6th, 2012
4:03 pm

Jacket Detective, you’re wrong. Based on the defensive alignment, an option to the right side would have worked. Clemson was aligned to plug the middle and crash the left side of the line. The correct play in that situation is an A-back option to the right with the B-back rolling ahead for a lead block to seal off the blitzing corner, while the WR works up to the safety. Run correctly against that defensive alignment, it could easily go for 6. At a minimum, it would get the chains moved.

But Tevin doesn’t have the eyes to make those calls at the LOS. When in doubt, he just keeps it. You could see CPJ’s frustration on the sideline.

You’re wrong.
If the haters are correct, then Coach Paul Johnson is an idiot to keep playing him.
And an idiot to trust him on 4th and one.
Like I said, no one else goes for it in that sitation.
Not any of the high powered offenses around the country.
So why should we?

DS CE'91

I’ll take 27-21 at the half, but a couple of things from the first half really frustrated me:

1. We go for it on 4th down deep in our territory in the 1st Quarter, call a time out – which gives the defense the chance to get set just like it does our offense – and the best we can come up with is another &^%&& QB sneak?

2. We get them in a 4th down situation, they are planning to punt, and we have to call timeout again because WE weren’t ready? During the TO, of course Clemson decides to go for it, which leads to a score.

3. We get a chance for points on the last drive, and CPJ acts like he’s never run a 2 minute drill before – plus we have no timeouts.

I’m typically a defender of CPJ, but he has to do better. I think items 1-3 above represent at least 13 points one way or the other.

Coaches own this deficit—poor use of time outs—clueless 2 minute offensive. Why call timeout when Clemson lines up to punt????????? It’s 4th and 1—play regular D and drop back J Thomas in case they punt—TO gives Clemson time to rethink and they get 1st down and go on to score.

Players are playing better—hope our coaches can catch up to what’s going on on the field.

OldSchoolTechFanatic

CPJ cant coach at this level. When he needs to punt he goes for it and when he needs to go for it he punts. How many times is he gonna line up on 4th down to draw the D offside and then waist a timeout because they dont fall for it. Im sure every team that prepares for GT tells their player CPJ will try this at least once a game soooo be ready.

My Pre-game Peedictions::

VL will not play today unless its late in the game or its a token single series. CHECK

TW will open up with a pass and then the offense will revert back to run plays. MISSED THAT ONE

They will end up with less than 10 passes for the game unless VL plays. MAYBE

Anything close to the goal TW will call his own number. CHECK

If defense does not pressure the QB then Clem will score >40 points. CHECK – my number is being revised upward to >50.

The difference between Tech and a good team—they drive down and score in the clutch—we do not. Even the announcers are recognizing the wasted time by the offense—heck have Vad ready to go with a 2 minute offense—he passes better anyway and at least we’d have a set of plays to run instead of everyone looking around. That last two minutes was truly pathetic!

The kickoff return snafu, ensuing safety (and play calling), blocked field goal, and usual horrible pass coverage are indicators of our season. Reasons that we’re unranked and soon to be 2 – 4. At least the Jackets showed up today and were alive. Now we just have to figure out how to be competitive against big-boy teams. Recruiting?

I said it after the Miami game that if Al Groh had any decency he would have retired/resigned then. It’s quite apparent to me that he has none of the characteristics of being an honorable man. His players show what they think of him by their play.

WillGT

Well this season sucks, its a complete write off. Glad we found out at the beginning rather than mid season. Johnson won’t be fired guys, no way with his contract, Groh maybe. Tevins getting better, but Senior or not he needs to be benched and let Vlad Lee play. The D isn’t fixable this season. We have seen Grohs D work many times, but the players just don’t have any stamina. Not watching anymore of this season, can’t take it any more.

My Pre-game Predictions:

VL will not play today unless its late in the game or its a token single series. 100% RIGHT

TW will open up with a pass and then the offense will revert back to run plays. OK MISSED THAT ONE They will end up with less than 10 passes for the game unless VL plays. ACTUALLY 14 SO I WAS 71% RIGHT.

Anything close to the goal TW will call his own number. 75% RIGHT

If defense does not pressure the QB then Clem will score >40 points. 100% RIGHT

If we lose to Boston College, we should disable the entire football program for 3 years and start over. They gave up over 500 yards of rushing to a winless Army team that runs the same offense as us.

We’ve given up a mile of offense in the last 3 games—a freakin’ MILE!

However, it was special teams that choked it—-another poor KO return, blocked FG, called a time out when the other team was punting…..that was the difference in the game.

Other notables is that CPJ does not have a 2 minute offense. I’ve been a supporter of him, but the coaching was awful today. If you’re going to have someone like Vad sitting on the bench, then at least have him train for a 2 minute offense and bring him in—he can pass. THe pass was open all day, but CPJ like a greyhound goes back to what he knows….of course the run was open too…Clemson has no D, but neither do we.

I disagree with the lack of recruits comments—our players are good enough to win. Today our coaches let the team down in a big, big way.

Ken, I have to agree, a new low for the AJC. No live coverage for such a historically big game in Death Valley? Not sure what, where, when, or how this came about. This is as unacceptable for this alum (and Atl native) as our “swiss-cheese” Defense and “fair-weather” Offense. A “L” for Jackets and AJC.
