Tech counts on accountability, leadership to stop slide

Georgia Tech practiced Tuesday with a revived vigor, according to two of the team’s captains. Getting trounced by Middle Tennessee State will apparently do that to a team.

“I think they’re kind of excited to get back out on Saturday and prove to the world that we’re not the team that we showed last Saturday,” said guard Omoregie Uzzi, named a captain last week.

After back-to-back losses, each discouraging in its own way, the Yellow Jackets face a trip to No. 15 Clemson Saturday. Tech faces a turning point. If the Jackets lose, they will have their second three-game losing streak in three seasons and will go into the bye week with unresolved frustration and disappointment. With a win, the Jackets can restore their pride and look upon the second half of the season with hope to build on the momentum. How the team’s leadership responds this week and Saturday will go far in determining the game’s outcome.

“I think we got all (the motivation) we needed last week,” said quarterback Tevin Washington, another captain. “I think the best thing for us is just to go out and play hard and keep that taste in our mouth and I think we’ll get better results.”

When asked to name their favorite captains from their Tech careers, they both chose former defensive tackle Darryl Richard (2008), quarterback Joshua Nesbitt (2009-10) and A-back Roddy Jones (2011). Uzzi also picked safety Morgan Burnett, a 2009 captain. Further, they both saw the three players as quiet leaders.

“They weren’t really outspoken guys, but most of the time they’d lead by example and try to do the right thing, on and off the field,” Washington said.

Uzzi and Washington both fit the same mold, as does the third captain, defensive end Izaan Cross. While Uzzi might be the most given of the three to speaking up, all three are often cited by teammates for their dedication and not for grand oratories. Their response to the team’s slide perhaps reflects their style. With the team sliding, they and the team’s other seniors met to make sure that a message of accountability was being heard. Rather than a team-wide meeting, different seniors spoke with teammates in their position groups.

“Make sure that they’re playing at the level that you want them to play at, and also that you want to play at,” Uzzi said. “Don’t slack this week. We can’t cut anybody any slack. It’s that simple.”

It is a message that started at the top.

“You need some leadership, but the first thing you’ve got to do, everybody’s got to be accountable,” coach Paul Johnson said. “From coaches to players to whatever, you’ve got to do your job and people have got to be able to depend on (you) doing what you’re supposed to do.”

That ownership extends down to redshirting freshmen and scout-team players, Johnson said, making a pointed comment about a team whose enthusiasm was lacking against the Blue Raiders.

“They’ve got to take ownership in the team,” he said. “There’s got to be some energy on that sideline. Just because you’re not playing doesn’t mean you stand over there like a corpse.”

The captains and the other seniors, though, have as few as seven games remaining. The will to play with start-to-finish urgency will have to start from them. Uzzi, who has lived through five seasons’ worth of highs and lows at Tech, knows their fate if they don’t.

“From time to time, if we come out and lay an egg, that’s what we’re going to be defined as,” Uzzi said.

I support the team 100%, but Groh has gotta go. He couldn’t get the job done from the sideline so CPJ booted him upstairs for some additional perspective. Where will groh view the game from this week? Maybe in front of the television might not be a bad place. It’s additional perspective and CPJ would be less likely to strangle him on the way home.

If…
If we could recruit players on the same level as Dwyer, Thomas, Morgan, Burnett and Nesbitt every year instead of one out of ten.
Attaochu and Watts will be back.
So the D should be a lot better.
The competition will be a lot better too.
MTSU noticed we were demoralized from the three tough losses and took advantage.
We’ll bounce back.
We may not win but the effort will be there.

Lose that game and letdowns have happened to a lot of teams.

With the two tough losses, goals have to be reset.

I’m not so sure about Watts Mr. Jacket Detective.

Watts looks good when he’s using his speed to chase down plays and in pursuit, but when teams runs right at him, he is very weak against the run and weak at the point of attack.

On more than one occasion Benny Cunningham ran #11 over and it looked real bad, and even worse on CSS’s replay last night at 9:30pm.

Attachou has disappeared this season, and Watts seems to be a workout wonder that disappears when the game gets physical.

When our Backup LBs went in to the game they were ATROCIOUS, Harrell (#51 I think), and Marcordes (#35) looked like they didn’t belong in D1-A at all, they looked like D-II LBs, which is way below D1-AA.

Our LBs looked really bad, what everyone thought was a strength isn’t a strength at all.

In fact during pre-season practice I warned many GT fans that they shouldn’t expect too much from guys (like Watts) that could not beat out LBs that couldn’t even get an NFL tryout and Watts couldn’t beat out those guys in front of him for 2 straight seasons.

The same thing with TJ Barnes, he couldn’t beat out Logan Walls for 2 straight years maybe 3, and Walls didn’t even get invited to any NFL camp.

The major disappointment is that many GT fans had unrealistic expectations for players that had shown NOTHING for 2 or 3 seasons, yet were supposed to play at a level that would allow us to compete for the ACC title.

Too many delusional GT fans set themselves up for disappointment.

This is where I say, not me of course.

Should a brilliant man like him with all his knowledge and talents be limited to posting only on the Ga Tech blogs for the AJC? Such a waste of talent. Surely the rest of the world can benefit from his commentary. Were they not impressed with the picture he has of a Tech class ring? Maybe he needed to make a photocopy of a Tech diploma too. What do you think that would do to team morale? Vad should not REPLACE Tevin until he has proven it on the field and his teammates recognize his worth. That can only happen if he is allowed to play more than he has thus far. But, I DO NOT believe he should REPLACE Tevin until he has proved himself, not to US, but to his teammates.

TW assumed a leadership role in the off-season, leading some throwing practices, offensive drills, etc. But that is all but forgotten now, with his lousy performance and complete lack of progression from last year. His captaincy is really just respect for his 5th year senior status.

I really don’t know what else Vad can do to “prove it to his teammates”. But has Tevin proven ANYTHING to his teammates “on the field”?

@ Joe…..I am not disagreeing with your assessments; I just am not sure of how the team will respond to their “leader” being benched. Remember they are still kids, and who knows how their brains work. That being said, however, I would LOVE to see Vad START against Clemson Saturday, because Clemson would be totally unprepared for that, and for what Vad might bring to the table. That would not be seen as benching TW, but of coming up with a different and unexpected plan of attack. Obviously, if it works, then Vad would probably almost immediately move into the position of leadership for the team, and I doubt there would be any resentment or bitterness.

Actually TW had more rushing yds. than that, in CFB, the way the Stats are calculated, lost yards due to Sacks are deducted from a QB’s Rushing total.

1. Can’t throw him to the wolves in Blacksburg.

3. Not ready to start vs. UVA.
4. If CPJ thought he was better, he’d start against Miami.
5. Now, can’t throw him to the wolves at Clemson.

Every week, same excuses. It’s funny, everyone blames CPJ for other decisions (like hiring Al Groh, not running certain plays, not going for it on 4th down), but when it comes to TW vs. Vad, his decision is gold. Cracks me up.

“FL: TW definitely has more mistakes than plays made. But not benched yet.”

Joe…we’re obviously watching different games. Would you bench Tony Romo because he had a 5-INT game? Bad games happen, and bad plays happen even in good games. Tevin is actually completing around 60% of his passes and showing proficiency in the 2-minute drill. He fumbles the ball LESS than Josh Nesbitt did. His current YPC of 3.9 is on par with Josh Nesbitt’s (4.0 in 2008, 3.7 in 2009).

So much of a QB’s success is from the neck up…not the neck down. The TO is no different. He leads an offense that averages 487 yards/game and 39 points/game.

You’re probably right Joe, I just wish they weren’t going to be at Clemson. It’s not impossible, but I’d say there’s a 95% chance we’re going to get beat, and it could be totally our of hand. Why take a chance on an another epic beatdown being his first start?

Once he goes in, he needs to be the man, not in a rotation with TW. The seasons over. I couldn’t care less if we go to the “Smuckers Grape Jelly bowl game in Gulfport Mississippi”.

After this week it’s a bye week. Let him get all the first team reps after this week, then I’d say it’s his team.

If Romo puts together 5-6 bad games, and has a below .500 record (like Tevin), he will be benched. Guaranteed. Jerry Jones don’t play that. He’d bring in Quincy Carter out of retirement just to prove a point.

I’m not calling for TW to benched because of a bad game. His resume is horrible. 11-12 record. strip out the OOC games, and it’s nightmarish.

He really hasn’t had much of a chance to show what he has so far, and that’s why GT Joe is so adamant that he be given a chance. Except for the series Vad played in the first quarter against MTSU, he has looked spectacular every time he has come in. When he came in during the Presbyterian game, all I could think was, WOW, there is our future, and it looked great. I still think he is Tech’s future, but he still does need to work on running the actual Triple Option; so far he has looked best out of the “pistol.”

Most of the people on here would be happy to discuss football with reasonable Dawg fans like you and others (what ever happened to Dawg in Lex by the way?). At least you’re up front and honest about your allegiances. We can all handle that.

His problem is he wants everyone to believe he’s a Tech grad (he’s not), in fact he hates Tech with a passion. That’s OK, I can live with that, but don’t come on an opposing teams blog, pretend to be a graduate, use the words “our” and “we” like you give a crap about the team while your criticizing and ridiculing everything about the school and the program, and then expect a big group hug.

Oh, and stalking Vad Lee definitely didn’t help.

Because CPJ “lied” to Vad, on his old Twitter account Vad was under the impression that CPJ was going to change the Offense “for him” and GT would throw the ball 25+ times per game.

On his old Twitter account Vad admitted that running was the weakest part of his game, and that he wanted to be thought of as a pass first QB.

Does that sound like someone that would be attracted to the Triple-SLOPtion and LESS than 14 pass attempts per game?

Vad no longer has that account and I didn’t get screen captures as proof, recruits get punished if they want to transfer by having to sit out a yr. and there is no “punishment” for HCs that deceive Recruits to get them to sign LOIs knowing that the players get punished by having to sit out a yr.

I’m all for players since they don’t get paid, especially when HCs deceive them to get them to sign.

I’ll take the comments as fact and leave it at that. I enjoy football blogs and the comments they generate – both good and bad.

Back to Vad – he was a stud coming out of H.S. and I fully expected him to be the starter at this point in his career. What happened? Looking around the college football landscape I see more than a handful of former H.S. studs that are playing – many as freshmen.

From my seat behind my keyboard I am baffled as he is clearly one of the better athletes on the team and suspect he would be tearing it up if playing with another team. Granted I have never seen him practice so it’s difficult to make an honest appraisal of his progress. Bottom line I think CPJ is so inflexible in his approach to offense that Vad is being wasted. A truly good coach will adapt his system to fit the roster not force square pegs into round holes.

Vad seems to have a better than average arm and can run too but CPJ hasn’t recruited the skill players (i.e. WR’s) to compliment Vad’s skill set. Puzzling at best.

Geez. You try to be nice to the Techies and this what you get. I guess this guy predicted a 2-4 first half of the season. I’m sure he wasn’t your usual big mouthed Techie puffing out his chest and talking a big game in August or anything like that. Noooooo, of course not. And I’m the freaking tooth fairy too.

Thanks.

“Have I even been “warned” ”

Yes, Gollum, you were warned by Ken yesterday about using foul language and name-calling. In fact, he even deleted the post in which YOU referred to someone as “an effin’ d-bag”. Keep it clean? Another outrageous lie from WnE.
_____________

Ken said stop the name calling, he never said WnE specifically ,and in fact he could have been warning the person that called me a weirdo for saying that Autry was 6-2 173lbs soaking wet.

A figure of speech for those B_and G_eek types that have never played a Sport of any kind.

CPJ loses to MTSU, and all of sudden all the comments are about me and not our overpaid HC.

@GT Lee .. as long as CPJ is there, it is the Joke by the Coke. I had to do a double take when I saw the MTSU score and all I could do was chuckle when I saw it wasn’t a typo. This time last year, you couldn’t say one bad thing about GT/CPJ/Tevin on here. I saw GT Joe talking up the offense as “the most exciting offense in the nation” and all the talk was bring on FSU and bring on UGA. Now this board has a vastly different feel and those who are finally seeing the light on CPJ are CORRECT. His offense is more high school than most high schools at this point.

@GT Lee … so last year when very few thought the defense was the problem once GT started losing games, they were all wrong? No GT Lee, the problem is CPJ and as long as he’s there, hope you’re comfortable with 4th or 5th in your conference .. AT BEST!

From the way that you folks describe this poster, it appears that he or she may be locked in a revenge fantasy. It could be due to being terminated by Georgia Tech (from employment or enrollment as a student.) Another cause could be due to being jilted in a relationship, losing out to a Tech employee, student or graduate. There is quite obviously obsession, given the time and detail spent on blogging. This can be concurrent with depression. Self aggrandizement is a big part of it, claiming superior knowledge or insight.

What is very disturbing is the description of stalking behavior of this person toward a recruit. That elevates the situation to more than just being odd behavior, to a potential danger to self or others.

Until you start the d over from square one, you will be in a mess! It would take Shakespeare 6 quill pens, a half-barrel of ink, and three weeks to write about that abominable lack of effort Saturday. I just hope y’all do better this week. GT is my team, it is my school, and I set aside 1 hour each week to listen to the call-in radio show with Wes, that makes me a good fan, not someone that should be criticized.

BTW, it looks awfully chicken- isht to not have a call-in radio show the week after you lose to MTSU, it makes it seem as if CPJ is running scared.

When all is said and done it comes down to recruiting and there is no denying that GT has been wanting for defensive talent especially and better talent overall. CPJ has proven to be a marginal recruiter, and Al Groh has proven to be a terrible recruiter.

Perhaps what is needed is a change in recruiting philosophy. Perhaps some of CPJ’s recruiting problems can be traced to the paucity of above average athletes in Georgia and this geographic area who can make the grade academic-wise at GT. Then go North!! And West! Recriut against Northwestern, Notre Dame, Stanford, etc. Those schools find athletes who can make the grade. GT has been recruiting against MTSU and it has come home to roost.
