Tech counts on accountability, leadership to stop slide

Georgia Tech practiced Tuesday with a revived vigor, according to two of the team’s captains. Getting trounced by Middle Tennessee State will apparently do that to a team.

“I think they’re kind of excited to get back out on Saturday and prove to the world that we’re not the team that we showed last Saturday,” said guard Omoregie Uzzi, named a captain last week.

After back-to-back losses, each discouraging in its own way, the Yellow Jackets face a trip to No. 15 Clemson Saturday. Tech faces a turning point. If the Jackets lose, they will have their second three-game losing streak in three seasons and will go into the bye week with unresolved frustration and disappointment. With a win, the Jackets can restore their pride and look upon the second half of the season with hope to build on the momentum. How the team’s leadership responds this week and Saturday will go far in determining the game’s outcome.

“I think we got all (the motivation) we needed last week,” said quarterback Tevin Washington, another captain. “I think the best thing for us is just to go out and play hard and keep that taste in our mouth and I think we’ll get better results.”

When asked to name their favorite captains from their Tech careers, they both chose former defensive tackle Darryl Richard (2008), quarterback Joshua Nesbitt (2009-10) and A-back Roddy Jones (2011). Uzzi also picked safety Morgan Burnett, a 2009 captain. Further, they both saw the three players as quiet leaders.

“They weren’t really outspoken guys, but most of the time they’d lead by example and try to do the right thing, on and off the field,” Washington said.

Uzzi and Washington both fit the same mold, as does the third captain, defensive end Izaan Cross. While Uzzi might be the most given of the three to speaking up, all three are often cited by teammates for their dedication and not for grand oratories. Their response to the team’s slide perhaps reflects their style. With the team sliding, they and the team’s other seniors met to make sure that a message of accountability was being heard. Rather than a team-wide meeting, different seniors spoke with teammates in their position groups.

“Make sure that they’re playing at the level that you want them to play at, and also that you want to play at,” Uzzi said. “Don’t slack this week. We can’t cut anybody any slack. It’s that simple.”

It is a message that started at the top.

“You need some leadership, but the first thing you’ve got to do, everybody’s got to be accountable,” coach Paul Johnson said. “From coaches to players to whatever, you’ve got to do your job and people have got to be able to depend on (you) doing what you’re supposed to do.”

That ownership extends down to redshirting freshmen and scout-team players, Johnson said, making a pointed comment about a team whose enthusiasm was lacking against the Blue Raiders.

“They’ve got to take ownership in the team,” he said. “There’s got to be some energy on that sideline. Just because you’re not playing doesn’t mean you stand over there like a corpse.”

The captains and the other seniors, though, have as few as seven games remaining. The will to play with start-to-finish urgency will have to start from them. Uzzi, who has lived through five seasons’ worth of highs and lows at Tech, knows their fate if they don’t.

“From time to time, if we come out and lay an egg, that’s what we’re going to be defined as,” Uzzi said.

@ Blind….as I said before, I have no idea. BUT, I can look back at the Bobby Ross years and say the exact same thing. I can remember sitting in the stands in 1988 and 1989 accusing Ross of trying to force his system on the players, instead of adapting his system to the talent he had. And then, BAM, 1990, and EVERYTHING fell into place. Call me naive if you want to, but I expect the same thing to happen with Johnson’s players, including Vad. And although thus far our WR’s haven’t show the talents of Bay-Bay and even Hill, they are young and have thus far at least shown a great deal of promise.

We can only hope that our sorry excuse of a defense isn’t as bad as last week and will give up fewer points. If they do, I hope Groh will resign. Turning the ball over will cost us the game. We need a go to guy at Wide Out. Green does not have the skills of D. Thomas. It’s really sad to see the Jackets lose to the same team that lost to McNeese State. Maybe Tech just drop out of the ACC and join a lesser conference.

While I admit you may be right from time to time, it does not mean that I have one iota of respect for you. What possibly could be your motivation for contacting a recruit and telling him he was making the wrong decision? What makes you even think he wants your opinion? Sounds a bit self-absorbed if you ask me.

I not “out to get you”. People just need to realize that you have hated CPJ and/or GT from the beginning and will use whatever is out there to spin your opinions. Again, the motivation for any individual to contact a recruit thinking said recruit wants and/or values those opinions is beyond me. What does it say about said individual to even think that way.

You never had or will ever have my respect, even when you are right. I just findamentally disagree with how you try to make your point. That is why I rarely, if ever, read your diatribes. You have some serious issues.

Old Blind Dawg: As far as tweaking a system to fit the personnel, I believe CPJ is doing that now. He introduced the Pistol this year for the first time. It’s no coincidence that Vad Lee almost exclusively played from the pistol in HS.

Joe…cherry-picking I see. So the idea is we bench players when they make a SINGLE mistake? If you’re going to bench a QB for throwing a pick then you might as well not throw the ball at all.

The fact that we were in two OT games was, in large part, because Tevin rallied the team to take the lead in the first place. Tevin is allowed to have bad game every now and then…every player does.

my .02-Teven is like many football players-inconsistant. He can/did hit many so far this year and also missed completely/late to throw on others. Tech receivers caught a few and dropped a few that hit them in the hands. Once inconsistant, likely to always be inconsistant.

CPJ again shines the light on everything esle but him! He is the head, recruiting or lack of, starts with him, the lack of defense, stamina, weak coaching staff, not having enough speed, athletes, morale etc all start with him. The guy is the highest paid ever GT FB Coach and it is everything else fault. If the 3-4 is not working, he has to fix it! If recruiting is not up to par he has to try and improve it. I know CPJ can be a great Coach, probably one of the greatest of all time. But a great Coach, a great head of family makes changes when the things are not working. CPJ is his own worse enemy. He won’t change and CAG won’t change. MAYBE THEY AREN’T MOTIVATED. Both will get millions whether they win or not. Both have great retirements ahead where they’ll be able to fish and do things a lot of men in their 60’s won’t be able to do. I plead with you CPJ, I know you are going to get paid regardless but please be a fighter! Please don’t be so arrogant and stubborn that you bring GT FB down! So many people depend on you, so many people love GT or will become fans. You are one of the best but you must humble yourselves and look at the man in the mirror! PLEASE HELP!

Ok, so here’s the deal, GT has no chance of anything close to prominence in a usually lackluster ACC so long as CPJ is coaching there. It’s just a fact. You can’t name a team in the last 25 years that has been a championship caliber team using things like 7 pass attempts a game, A-backs and B-backs, triple options, etc. They suck and until he is gone, they always will.
